I’ve been wondering why I’ve been enjoying Scrapped Princess. Generally, I don’t go for fantasy-type anime, hence why I don’t like Slayers or Tales of Eternia despite people telling me that I should. Previously, the only fantasy title that I enjoyed is Escaflowne, but that show just kicked butt.
Non-spoiler Portion
Scrapped Princess is about a girl, Pacifica, who is destined to destroy the world when she turns 16. She is flanked by her foster brother, Shannon, and sister, Raquel. They go off on their merry, light-hearted adventures as they try to stay one step ahead of those who want Pacifica dead (basically, everyone). The series has that right balance of action, comedy, and fanservice… though, it could use a bit more fanservice… especially from the superweapons.
Spoiler Portion
(Continue reading to be spoiled… you have been warned.)
(Last warning… massive spoilers ahead.)
The series starts out in some fantasy world full of magic, knights, and dragoons that resemble some medival adventure. In reality, it’s more like The Matrix with Shannon and Raquel being Morpheous and Trinity and Pacifica as the clueless, but almighty, Neo. Apparently, 5,000 years ago, or 500 or so years after our current time, humanity is attacked by space aliens (there seems to be aliens in like all recent anime) and humanity constructed weapons such as the dragoons to fight back. Nonetheless, they were no match, and humanity was enslaved by the aliens and forced to live in an artificial world set in medival times. (Note how they refer to English as “the ancient dead language”.) However, humanity did manage to implant special traits such that one person will eventually be able to see through and break the illusions will be born. This, of course, is Pacifica.
Heh… I enjoyed Scrapped Princess as well (although I’m a sucker for fantasy anime).
***Semi-Spoiler Starts Now***
The Japanese love (or rather, worship) The Matrix series, and like Star Wars, expect to see its influence in new titles from now on…
***Semi-Spoiler Ends Now***
Thus far, no one had given me any reason to watch Scrapped Princess apart from decent Fanservice (not a selling point imo). Now I’m getting interested. :P
