harem sabermetrics

I enjoyed Stripey’s table so much that I spent some time this week to update it. Massive, massive amount of spoilers on this table.

image

In addition to adding more anime series, doubling the total to well over forty, I also tossed in the characters who are dead-out-of-the-gate. For example, as much as we all want to see a “Chigusa” ending, I don’t think we’ll get that. Still, she goes into the harem matrix. I also can’t believe that Stripey left out Kanako for Love Hina. The Main Office is considering revoking his sis-con license now.

All haremettes are sorted by primary moe function. For example, even though Mikuru Asahina can play many positions, for this chart’s purpose, she’s classified as a meido. Like fantasy football, I can’t exactly draft Mike Vick and start him at RB.

New catagories are pretty self-explainatory:

“Rich Girl”: Girls of wealth. I tossed Zero no Tsukaima‘s Henrietta in here as well.

“Meido”: Absolute sin and abomination not to have this category in the original list.

“MILF”: To denote someone much older than the “oneesama” category.

“Lolibait”: To denote someone much younger than the “underclassmate” category.

“Itsuki”: Itsuki.

I thought about adding more categories like “next door neighbor,” “tsundere,” “swordswomen,” etc, but it started getting really obscure. Too much discretization may be a bad thing.

The chart is also color coded to indicate how far the haremette has gotten with the harem lead. Red is “GAME OVER”; orange is “Score!”; yellow is “Runners in scoring position”; and grey is “Ahead in the count.” If you get my drift. Some of them are pure speculation, but, alas, a best guess. Hopefully, I don’t have the change the box color for Code Geass. Also, just for kicks, I color coded all Horie Yui roles in green.

% Successful Rate

Total Count

Using this chart, promised ones, childhood friends, and mysterious girls have the highest success rate while lolibait and rich girls get zero love– it makes sense in that the Japanese culture is one geared to honoring promises, so if there is a promised girl, she’ll end up being picked. It’s rather more of a shock when a promised girl doesn’t get chosen. Still, promised girl voiced by Horie Yui is the closest thing to a sure thing. I’ll dub them “the LBJs.”

Surprisingly, there’s almost three times more little sisters than cousins. I find it kinda surprising that at least with a (second) cousin, the animators don’t have to go out of their way to invent a little sister or little sister scenario fit for mainstream consumption (Koi Kaze excepted, of course). Technically, though, Gift’s Riko is a cousin, which would skew the results a bit… but since she says “oniisama” so much, I kept her in the little sister bin.

Scarily, there’s a lot of valid entries in the “Itsuki” category. Just for kicks, I tossed Otome wa Boku‘s Mizuho herself in this category for no apparent reason.

Meido don’t seem to get a lot of love, which just proves that there’s a lot of idiot harem leads out there. I think this category has a lot of great characters who get don’t get enough screentime: Mikuru (always happy to see Mikuru), Nadeshiko, The Triplets, and, of course, Yoriko.

Underclassmen would have been shut-out if not for the noble efforts of Meyrin. Same goes for Happy Lesson‘s Mutsuki. After watching Happy Lesson, I know why we don’t exactly see more anime where the “-mama” honorific is tossed around like cheap beer at a frat party.

The category with the worst chance percentage is the standard classmate. It has the most names in the bin yet lowest success rate. If you’re not special, you’re boring and unwanted by the harem lead.

Out of these forty series, only four really reach the penultimate harem end: Mahoraba, Da Capo, Nadesico, and Love Hina.

For the next revision of the list, I’ll probably add more series.

  1. Damn hard to decide when you’ve got so many going on in that poll…… I’ve got a cross between (tw)incest and MILF.

  2. You get on Stripey’s case for leaving out Kanako, but you left out Motoko….

  3. We are not worthy!

If not for the curse of doing a paper on Mao’s accursed socialist experiment and the ramblings of some idiot samurai I would be pouring over this information right now with most scrutiny and gusto.

Still my preliminary analysis is in agreement based on numbers. Nevertheless this is a momentous advance for the creation of the first Anime Kulture major.

So many compeitiors in the itsuki category, wow I’d never imagined. I like how you went about Sister Princess, and appluad your efforts and greater sample size. In regards to Code Geass has the main office started some sort of betting pool that doesn’t involve any monetary transactions, a gentlemen’s bet perhaps? Maybe in terms of the harem Lulu and Suzaku are the homo homo side characters in that dynamic.

I would like to vouch for Stripey to keep his sis-con license pending an outrageous act of sis-con-ism that I am sure he is plotting. While his over looking of Kanako from Love Hina is appalling to say the least we must keep in mind that he has been immersed in the extracirricular activities to expand his title. Surely having a growing list of “intrests” and an all powerful spouse while annhilating his wallet in his bid to join the Church of Moyism is taxing, he is afterall a mere mortal tanuki. I suggest putting him on notice since he is probably getting old in blogging years and his memory is probabaly degrading faster than my regard for Mao. He is a fellow fan of meido-fuku that must count for something at AOMM.

  4. wow.. another phd. class dissertation.. this time with distinction :P

  5. Pretty awesome chart, but three comments:

*SPOILER* In the Love Hina category, why is NN scored red? Unless I’m remembering incorrectly, or I’m assuming a different definition of scoring… *SPOILERS END*

Does Elfen Lied not count as containing a harem, even if not directly revolving around them? We’ve got the cousin/mysterious childhood friend/underclassman+lolibait+sickly/pathetic+infantcon bait…

What about Mushishi? Harem lead: Ginko. Female props: multiple and various (OK, I admit it, I never finished MS). Other haremettes: AoMM readers, Jason Miao.

    Seems to fit, yes?

  6. Maaaaaaan. Two girls is a rivalry, three+ is a harem. The presence of females should not a harem make. Hell, that would mean Kodocha was a harem series (and for that matter, a reverse harem series at the same time), as was Onizuka, and almost any show containing two or more females. Hell, Tsukuyomi and Elfen Lied would both be harem shows.

There should be a standard of classification here… something like…

A.) Harem keeper must be a main character.

Sorry Chrono, commanding Nanoha, Fate, Hayate, Lindy and a pair of cat girl twins doesn’t count. Likewise Inukami’s Kaoru, despite having 12 slavishly devoted women is out.

B.) To be even considered for the harem, a lady… hell… let’s not forget Saber Marionette here… or a guy must be a recurring character.

Sorry Soul Taker. Despite all the women throwing themselves around they all die in an episode.

C.) To be considered for the harem, a character must show at least some romantic inclination towards the harem keeper.

Air is a surprise victim of this one due to its lack of any kind of romantic element for Yukito outside of Misuzu.

D.) Harem must contain a minimum of 3 people.

2 is a rivalry. *shrug* Sorry Sagara. Only Tess and Chidori like you. Kyon is victimized by this too thanks to Nagato and Tsuruya being excluded by C. I’m sensing a pattern here. Oh, wait. Yuuichi’s still safe.

E.) If multiple questionably valids exist, usher them in. If only one exists based on some throwaway filler, or otherwise tenuous scrap, they’re out.

IE Tenchi in, Girls Bravo in, Utawarerumono out. At least the anime version.

Ei.) I have no idea how to even begin to handle Mahoraba.

Also, screw straight up comparisons. I demand the pairwise rankings. As any college hockey fan will tell you, that’s the only true way to get a definitive answer as to who is superior overall.

  7. >>>> *SPOILER* In the Love Hina category, why is NN scored red? Unless I’m remembering incorrectly, or I’m assuming a different definition of scoring… *SPOILERS END*

Go read the manga, and you’ll see why NN is red.

  8. AC says:
Kyon is victimized by this too thanks to Nagato and Tsuruya being excluded by C.

First of all, I personally don’t agree with C, since this would effectively remove a number of prime tsunderes from consideration should the ranking be made prior to the end of the series, and if you have to wait for the end of the series to call it a harem series, well, that doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Second of all, you are incorrect about Nagato at least (Tsuruya-san is questionable). Even only taking into account what we saw in the anime, she very obviously does have feelings for Kyon. Or at the very least, has more feelings for Kyon than for anyone else, which, given her disposition, is as good as you’re going to get. And you completely forgot Itsuki. The y4l fans aren’t going to like that.

Besides, a number of shows on this list are decidedly less “Harem Series” than “Series with Harem Tendencies.” Seeing the “Harem” in *every* series is a hallmark of this site.

  9. >>D.) Harem must contain a minimum of 3 people.

2 is a rivalry. *shrug* Sorry Sagara. Only Tess and Chidori like you. Kyon is victimized by this too thanks to Nagato and Tsuruya being excluded by C.>>

Sorry. Nagato’s still in the lineup and batting strong. All HnK jokes aside – although her affection is the most subtle in an already low-key series, there’s enough evidence to make a case.

I’d also like to offer up the chick that trains Sagara as her trophy boyfriend for your consideration, dunno if she applies though (been a long time since I last re-watched FMP).

  10. Is it me or is the graph incomplete? I thought the chosen haremmete for Underwater Ray Romano and Shuffle! was clear-cut? Yet why don’t I see their names being color-coded red? Likewise, shouldn’t Saber be color-coded Red instead of grey?

  11. I’d remove Genshiken from the chart, it is definitely NOT an harem series.

I still don’t understand why Naru from Love Hina is color-coded red. The manga ends with Naru’s and Keitaro’s wedding.

    And Yurika from Nadesico too???

Evangelion: if we take the movies into account, the winner should be Asuka. Well, not that she has much of a choice after End of Eva…

  12. I motion for the inclusion of a “first girl he sees” identifier, for obvious reasons.

  13. >> You get on Stripey’s case for leaving out Kanako, but you left out Motoko….

Yeah, I was the one who pointed out to Stripey that he left Kanako out. But if that was a shame, leaving Motoko out is an outrage. I demand a “swordswomen” category, if only to include her.

(Actually, even if Motoko is my favorite harem girl of all time, who even defined a whole harem category, every other swordswoman out there is mostly just a lowly clone of her, so I don’t really like that category myself. Only Motoko.)

Also, needs more Nagasarete Airantou (Machi FTW).

    >> Does Elfen Lied not count as containing a harem, even if not directly revolving around them?

    Truth *shudders*

  14. I just spoiled myself silly, then realized how sad I’ve become, since almost none of your data were spoilers in any case.

  15. I don’t see Negima in here…of course that would be tough to categorize.

  16. Wouldn’t “fiance” counmt as a genre? Or does that fall under “Promised Girl”?

  17. Someone help me with this: how is “Itsuki” is NOT making the table obscure ? First of all too many famous Itsuki. Secondly, from a statistical point of view, if a category is named after one particular cell value, then the cell value should be specified to avoid recursive defintion.

and oh, as long as we are having rules, we should really call it “The Harem Note” and featuring posts like “How to read Harem Note”…

  18. >> You get on Stripey’s case for leaving out Kanako, but you left out Motoko….

When was the last time you saw a “tsundere swordswomen power ranking” on AoMM? I think you’re getting my preferences confused.

    >> I still don’t understand why Naru from Love Hina is color-coded red. The manga ends with Naru’s and Keitaro’s wedding.

A wedding is GAME OVER, baby!

    >> I’d remove Genshiken from the chart, it is definitely NOT an harem series.

Genshiken does become a quasi-harem series– my favorite part has to be Madarame fapping to Saki’s cosplay pictures.

    >> Also, needs more Nagasarete Airantou (Machi FTW).

Next version will include Nagasarete as well as Chobits and a few other harem series that didn’t make it this time around. I didn’t have time to do everything.

    >> Does Elfen Lied not count as containing a harem, even if not directly revolving around them?

As I said, I’m adding more series for the next rev.

    >> Is it me or is the graph incomplete? I thought the chosen haremmete for Underwater Ray Romano and Shuffle! was clear-cut? Yet why don’t I see their names being color-coded red? Likewise, shouldn’t Saber be color-coded Red instead of grey?

Red is GAME OVER. H-game Saber would be orange, but anime Saber is most definitely grey (“ahead in the count”). Plus, if you’re dead, you don’t get any colored squares, really.

    >> I don’t see Negima in here…of course that would be tough to categorize.

    They would be all oneesamas…

    >> There should be a standard of classification here… something like

It doesn’t have to be a harem for the main character, just potential for haremability. I think I talked aboutt his when I explained why someone like Chigusa made it. I think you’re reading too much into this… remember, fun is step 1. Beating something to death is step 2. Please don’t jump to step 2 on me all of a sudden.

    >> Someone help me with this: how is “Itsuki” is NOT making the table obscure ?

    English language 4tw.

    >> I just spoiled myself silly, then realized how sad I’ve become, since almost none of your data were spoilers in any case.

    Yep… these are my readers.

  19. I noticed Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is also missing from the chart…do you plan on adding this one too? :)

  20. >>When was the last time you saw a “tsundere swordswomen power ranking” on AoMM? I think you’re getting my preferences confused.

    Outrage, I say.

It’s sad to see how my Meido Saint Patron completely forgot the goodness that is Meido Motoko *sigh*.

Heck, even that Motoklone on Hanaukyo is a maid, as far as I remember.

/r/ Motoko in that table, regardless of the category.

  21. KGNE is a love triangle not a Harem.

Akane’s not really confessing but confessing didn’t happen till very late in the series. Mayu/Ayu and the nurses were never in the running.

  22. Hmmm…well, I guess I can accept that. But why isn’t Akiko in the Kanon MILF section???

  23. Mutsuki…hmm…I was wondering which anime you were refering to for your 1 MILF success…

Elfen Lied can only be a harem if you throw in the dead sister and really squint at the doctor who really wanted a bath…beside these questionable entries there’s really only Yuka and Lucy…Nyuu was more the family pet than anything else and Kouta’s not Shiki level…

  24. Oh okay, I think I understand the graph legend a little better now.

It’s interesting to note that “endings” with either a yellow or grey is the norm among anime/manga series while the red ones (weddings) are few and between. A reflection of traditional fairy-tale wedding endings being eschewed for more open-ended endings in stories today?

Similarly, the number of harem leads and haremmetes consummating their relationship (orange) is fairly sparse. Probably to keep in line with TV broadcasting and printing regulations?

  25. >> beside these questionable entries there’s really only Yuka and Lucy

Yuka, Nyuu, Nana, Mayu, Nozomi, Lucy. Six girls (actually five, but meh), more than enough.

Also, why was Higurashi left out? K1’s got quite a harem.

  26. Magikano has effectively two haremmites, but is still considered a harem show because.. well, one person’s after Haruo for a kiss/romantic affair while the other’s just got a serious case of forbidden love. I’d have to suggest that living in a harem-type situation (one guy living with multiple women) should be one definition of a harme, especially if they use his living circumstances to drive the show – which is something AC’s definition ditches. This also means Negima would not be considered a harem show in the classic sense, especially not in the first few books, as only Nodoka and Ayaka would be interested… while Asuna, Yue, and a few others don’t fall into this trap later.

  27. Sagematt…LIKE I SAID…

…Nyuu’s a pet…Nana’s got a massive father complex…Mayu’s traumatized just about beyond repair and more interested in her dog than Kouta…and you have to squint really, really hard for Noizumi…

…just because there are many girls in a show does automatically put them in a harem…if that’s the case then just about every show out there is a harem show…the context is more important…

  28. Well, if you think of Nyuu as a pet, there is something wrong with you (Maybe I should start thinking of any retarded girl in anime as if they were pets… Or maybe LET’S NOT -Though I don’t really care if Nyuu is retarded, I care more about the obvious fact that she is Lucy’s own sin eater-). Nana’s father complex is out of question if there is no father. Mayu is quite conscious of her place in Kouta’s harem, but she is also pissed because he is such a playa. But what can we do, he is the goddamn Batman after all.

  29. (hmm… that white font tag didn’t work. Which are the allowed HTML tags on comments anyways?)

Even if we think of Lucy and Nyuu as one package, and we rule out Nozomi because she is in the manga, that’s still 4 girls that live with Kouta. One girl above Jason’s required amount, and even only one girl short of Love Hina’s starting harem.

(Testing tags on this line, btw)

  30. >>> When was the last time you saw a “tsundere swordswomen power ranking” on AoMM? I think you’re getting my preferences confused.

Fine. Nevertheless, this is a harem member listing, and Motoko is definitely a member of Keitaro’s harem. Sara, Kitsune, and Kaolla Su are far more questionable as harem members, and you had them listed.

Well, I guess it’s not too surprising for large tables like this to have several mistakes.

  31. >> I don’t see Negima in here…of course that would be tough to categorize.

    They would be all oneesamas…

You’re skating on thin ice here, since the age difference between Negi and his class is 4-5 years. I mean, what’s the age difference between Kei and Mizuho or Belldandy and K-1?

  32. I hope to find Shingetsutan Tsukihime in the next rev. Sure the anime was way too short but you still can find mysterious girls by the dozen, twin meidos, little sister, senpai, kouhai…

  33. Hahaha, nice likelyhood per class statistics.

Why is Nagato lsited an underclassman when she’s in the same year as Kyon though? Unless that’s just because she’s technically only three years old.

  34. I don’t remember seeing Athrun Zala in Magikano… only mistake i found. Really nice table, can’t wait for new version with more series (and more debate about are those series fitting for table) :D

  35. I am beginning to sound like a Scratched LP: What about the series that started the Harem business, Urusei Yatsura. Most of Rumiko’s work has Harem element in it. Ranma 1/2 can’t be ignored, and there also is the Kimagure Orange Road.

  36. …hmm…I wonder if Sagematt and I actually watched the same show…and if all those imoutos out there can include stepsisters, close cousins, and adopted no-blood-relation “sisters”…then why can’t Nana’s “father” be a father in name only…and saying Lucy and Nyuu count as 2 members of the harem is like saying my girlfriend had sex with my dick but not me…the reason I rate her as a pet is because she has a different personality from the norm but is not a totally different character…Nyuu is part of Lucy…

  37. LOL at 2 cases where Itsukis succeeded…

  38. >> then why can’t Nana’s “father” be a father in name only

Actually, I meant that he dies, as far as I remember (sorry, can’t think of a way to put a protected spoiler on a comment).

    >> Nyuu is part of Lucy…

Seems you didn’t read my last comment. Leave Nyuu (fair enough, same reason all of Kozue’s personalities are not on the table) and Nozomi out, and it’s still 4 girls. It’s more than required.

    >> Sara, Kitsune, and Kaolla Su are far more questionable as harem members

Well, the latter have a crush on him, and even had their share of moments and substories, so they qualify… but Sara? You sick bastard! :P

  39. Need to add Canvas2

  40. ruri from nadesico, nagato from haruhi(how come she is underclassmen? she is in the same grade as kyon and haruhi, just different class, and LOL-FANG-TAN is suppose to be upperclassmen, unless it’s mikuru’s harem) and mai from kanon would all be mysterious girl from my pov ; ;

  41. Absolutely awesome work. An upcoming version 2 sounds great as well. It would probably be a lot of work, but it would really be cool if all that data could be put in an online haremmetrics database. It could be searchable and allow users to create graphs and charts on the fly. Then with all that data you could set up online harem betting or a fantasy league.

  42. That’s a really interesting result in light of the conventional wisdom that being an osananajimi is enough of a kiss of death to trump even the first girl wins principle. Perhaps the “unlucky osananajimi” stereotype needs to be revisited?

  43. Just watched Vandread, which has to put all the girls in the “Classmate/Equals” catagory. None of them are in school, but they’re all pilots. One is the fighter commander, so she might make Oneesama, if you stretched a point. However, the ditzy one wins. The vain, self-centered one, and the stoic commander lose.

We need a sub-chart for personality, but I haven’t watched enough of the classic anime to do it justice.

  44. Okay, I changed the link over to rev 2. I added Motoko, Athrun (for Kira), and Akiko.

I also tossed in Chobits, Chokotto Sister, and Canvas 2. Also tossed in Keroro (Narrator) just for possible controversy. Just kidding. As to what anime gets included, I will add more over time. Do not expect every show to be included. Until I decide to outsource AoMM to India, it’s an one-man army. _Any_ series is fair game: including Monster if I figure out possible harem relationships for that one.

If you want to contribute something, either leave a comment here or send me mail.

As for what characters go into this matrix, as I said twice already, it’s not about just including characters who have a chance– it’s about all haremable characters. For instance, Chigusa and Akiko even though there’s no Chigusa nor Akiko endings available.

I’ll plan for a rev 3 to include even more series including Rahxephon.

  45. So according to your poll 10% of your readership loves the loli.

  46. I like ubu roi’s suggestion and think it should be taken a step further, if anyone knows an easy way to do it. A 3D graph with character role on the X-axis, series on the Y-axis and personality type on the Z-axis. Unfortunately the only way I can think of to do that would be to manually create it in something like 3D Studio Max. There’s probably a better way though.

If we kept the chart in 2D flat-land, the background color could be keyed to personality type and a border could show relationship with the harem leader.

  47. Monster: Tenma has Eva, Nina/Anna, and trap Johan (j/k)

Now, while I got what I wanted, I still have more bitching :P :
At the time Keitaro arrived on Hinata-sou, he was 19, and Motoko was 15 (highschool freshman), so that would make her an underclassmen :D

Oh, also: It’s Konno Mitsune. Kitsune is her nickname.

(My Love Hina-fu is never rusty ^^)

  48. You know, if you are counting Chigusa and Akiko as being part of the harems, then FMP really does deserve to be up there. You got Kaname, Tessa, Mao, Shinji and Kyouko. And there is also Nami in the later novel who also likes Sagara.

And by the way how come Lacus is orange for Kira? I was under the impression that Kira is too much of an idiot to do anything with her.

  49. Jason, you also forgot Please Teacher, featuring one of the hottest MILF in anime history.

  50. >>Jason, you also forgot Please Teacher, featuring one of the hottest MILF in anime history.

  51. Hrm… cut off my comment. Reposted below:

    >>Jason, you also forgot Please Teacher, featuring one of the hottest MILF in anime history.

Sorry, what’s-his-name does not count. You’re not allowed to be harem lead if you’re sterile.

In another note, I renominate Negi Springfield as alpha harem lead extraordinaire. **Small spoiler** When he’s 10, he’s got at the very least 4 or 5 onee-chans after him, and possibly much of the rest of his 31-member class. When he’s in his 15 form, he had practically had a whole stadium of girls gunning for him, literally and figuratively. Ahh, the delightful fantasies that spring from Ken Akamatsu’s mind**Small spoiler owari**

  52. >> Sorry, what’s-his-name does not count. You’re not allowed to be harem lead if you’re sterile.

    Kei.

And he was sterile? Wow, I didn’t know that.
Oh well, gotta see the bright side. He can enjoy his harem to the fullest without the risk of pregnancy. And if they get pregnant, he will know they were cheating on him. Not bad.

  53. Quote:

Red is GAME OVER. H-game Saber would be orange, but anime Saber is most definitely grey (”ahead in the count”). Plus, if you’re dead, you don’t get any colored squares, really.

I think anime Saber should be in the red…how many anime outside of the hentai kind does the harem master bang his chosen girl not once but twice! (I’m pretty sure the 2nd time was after their encounter with Gilgamesh) She loves him, he loves her. Game over.

    Quote:

Sorry, what’s-his-name does not count. You’re not allowed to be harem lead if you’re sterile.

    Kei.

And he was sterile? Wow, I didn’t know that.
Oh well, gotta see the bright side. He can enjoy his harem to the fullest without the risk of pregnancy. And if they get pregnant, he will know they were cheating on him. Not bad.

Well, Kei had Mizuho-sensei’s mom (definitely a Milf) and imouto after him and Kerikawa so that’s 4. Kerikawa shacked up with the other teacher later so were down to 3. So it’s still a harem. Is Mizuho-sensei a milf or an onee-san? I can’t tell.

  54. Shingetsutan Tsukihime:
    Classemate: Yumizuka Satsuki
    Mysterious Girl: Arcueid Brunestud (orange)
    Little sister: Tonho Akiha
    Oneesama: Ciel
    Meido: Hisui & Kohaku
    MILF: Aozaki Aoko
    Itsuki: Arihiko

  55. And now, for your amusement, I present Ranma 1/2:

    Cousin: N/A
    Classmate/Equal: N/A
Mysterious Girl: Shampoo (** also Promised One)
    Little Sister: N/A
    Underclassman: N/A
Childhood Friend: Ukyo Kuonji (** also Promised One)
Promised One: !Akane Tendou (RED *** also Classmate/Equal)
Oneesama: Nabiki Tendou, Kasumi Tendou (Oneesama of Oneesamas)
    Rich Girl: Kodachi Kuno
    Meido: sadly N/A
MILF: Nodoka Saotome (no real harem cred, here for sake of completion — had this been the Sunrise production of Ranma Otome, however, she would be ORANGE)
Lolibait: Hinako Ninomiya (**** also Oneesama)
    Itsuki: Tatewaki Kuno, Happousai

Most of the male cast of the series could qualify for the Itsuki category at one time or another (usually until they find out the secret). Only Kuno and Happousai qualify for more than an episode or two.

  56. @quigonkenny: Actually, they were NOT promised ones. That qualifies more as “forced marriage” or something. Anyways, No Maid = No Gain. I’d say we drop Ranma :P

  57. >> So according to your poll 10% of your readership loves the loli.

Loli-smolly. I’m more concerned about how Itsuki has more votes than Promised One.

    >> I think anime Saber should be in the red

I don’t think you understand the analogy. Red is marriage and/or kids… hence, “GAME OVER.” Sex is not game over (see Yamato, Kira).

    >> And by the way how come Lacus is orange for Kira?

    Pure speculation.

  58. >>Loli-smolly. I’m more concerned about how Itsuki has more votes than Promised One.

Who cares about the promise one, Itsuki has more votes then the Medio.

    >>I don’t think you understand the analogy. Red is marriage and/or kids… hence, “GAME OVER.” Sex is not game over (see Yamato, Kira).

Shouldn’t Fllay be in Orange? She did rape him.

Also in the Maburaho, you forgot to included the Doctor’s Sister. She could go in either the Mysterious Girl or the Oneesama catagory.

And why the heck is Athurun Zala in the Itsuki role in Magikano?

  59. Sorry for the duble post.

Jason, you might want to inlcuded some sort of color code for girl types like Tunsdere, swordswoman, magical girls and etc.

For example does a tunsdere childhood friend have more of a inside track then a swordswoman meido. And does adding accessiors like glasses make a difference.

  60. Xellos-_^ Says:
And does adding accessiors like glasses make a difference.

Does for me. Meganekko deredere horse ninja classmate FTW!!

@sagematt: A promise is a promise, no matter who made it. I’d maybe buy removing the ** for Shampoo (although she has pretty much promised she’d marry Ranma on multiple occasions), but Ukyo and Akane are both your standard “Arranged Marriage-type Promised Girl.” And Ranma pretty much defined harem anime. You can’t drop it. Kanon (either version), Tenchi, and Love Hina don’t have meido either, and I don’t see those being dropped.

  61. @quigonkenny: I thought promised girl was the “We’ll meet at Toudai” or any “I’ll promise to meet you again at XXX place” kind, not the parents saying “your son will marry my daughter in the future” kind. And Ranma didn’t define harem anime, Maison Ikkoku, Tenchi Muyo! and Love Hina did. Ranma is gag harem fighting comedy, and I thought me using the “stick tongue out” emoticon would clearly show that I was joking about the “drop Ranma” comment.

  62. What I find disturbing is that itsuki is tied with the classmate and the meido.

Jason, I stand corrected, but you still need to change Saber’s color from grey to orange.

Now how would you classify who is ahead in Sakura Taisen? Ogami never showed by deed or word that he favored one girl over the other?

    @sagermatt:

you’re going to have to drop Maison Ikkoku out of the list. There were only two girls in the running, not 3. You need three for it to be a harem.

  63. Urusei Yatsura ( this is incomplete list )
Cousin: none ( Thank God! )
Classmate: Lum, Shinobu, Ryuunosuke, Ran, Asuka?
Mystery: Lum, Benten, Ran, O-Yuki-sama, Kurama, Kindergarten Teacher, the one from Movie 3, Karura, Princess in movie 6, Alice ( Library ), Rain spirit ( ? ), Asuka? etc
Little Sister: Lum ( Chibi mode )
Underclassman: Mendo’s sister ( forgot her name )
    Childhood Friend: Shinobu
Promised One: Shinobu, Lum, Kurama, Queen in movie 1, etc.
Oneesama: Kindergarten Teacher, The girl from future in movie 3, Ghost, etc.
Rich Girl: O-Yuki, Mendou’s sister, Kurama, Queen in movie 1, Asuka?
    Meido: Lum, O-Yuki,
    MILF: Sakura sensei, Lum’s mother
    Lolibait: All chibi-modes
    Itsuki: Megane, Mendou, Ryuunosuke,

I’m sure I’ve forgotten about half the people, but I also believe some of the girls are the prototype of their categories.

  64. Kimagure Orange Road

Cousin: Akane ( appears in manga )
Classmate: Ayukawa Madoka ( also mystery, promised, and perhaps oneesama )
Little Sister: The 2 sisters of Kyosuke
Lolibait: Hikaru ( also underclassman )
Itsuki: the Cat(Jingoro?), himself ( from body switches )

  65. What about Amuro Rei from Gundam?

  66. And the “Itsuki” section would be…? Surely not bishounen. *laughs, pauses, then laughs again, loudly* 1% of those guys mentioned aren’t close to being pretty!

  67. Whether you love or hate Sakura from D.C. ~ Da Capo, you have to admit that she breaks the mold…

She’s the first girl Jyunichi sees, his first love, and the promised girl… yet we see another girl become highlighted in RED.

Also notable is the fact that Yue Horie-voiced character goes down to defeat.

  68. Okay, rev 3 will include at the minimum:

    Rahxephon
    Kimagure Orange Road (wontaek)
    Tsukihime (Seyluun)
    Onegai Teacher

If you have any more suggestions, please let me know.

  69. Some more suggestions:

    Maison Ikkoku
    El Hazard: the Magnificent World
    Dual! Parallel World Adventures
    Mamotte Shugogetten!

  70. LoL I had a hard time deciding which sterotype I liked the most but by glancing at the table it was so clear. Many of the girls I like from all of those Animes were almost exclusively filed under “mysterious girl”. Thank you Jason for clearing up my indecision with pure numerical logic.

  71. I think I spotted a couple of mistakes in the table; Housen Elis (Canvas 2) should be orange, not grey. And I believe Konoe Nanami (Lamune) should be yellow – Kenji behaved like a gentleman during their trip.

As for D.C. ~ Da Capo – I suppose the second season clears things up; otherwise we would’ve been forever arguing over whether Nemu should be yellow or orange.

  72. Jason,

Kimagure should not on the Harem chart.

It is a Love TRIANGLE not a harem.

  73. >> Kimagure should not on the Harem chart.

I’m pretty damn sure that I wrote, “_Any_ series is fair game: including Monster if I figure out possible harem relationships for that one.”

In other words, any series is fair game.

  74. Onegai Teacher and Onegai Twins are not harem, they are love triangles since you only get 2 girls going after the male lead.

Of course Tsukuyomi is listed and unless you are counting Luna … 2 girls.

I think a issue is just because there are women/men around does not mean they are a potencial partner, look at Soukou no Strain … is the entire Reasoner squad + Ralph a potencial parter to Sara?

And BTW Maison Ikkoku does have 3 girls … Kyoko, Kozue and Ibuki.

Also I would put Tenchi GXP just for laughts since its haren and … well you know the ending.

  75. You forgot about School Rumble.
    Lead: Harima.
    Cousin: Itoko
    Classmate/Equal: Tenma, Mikoto
    Underclassmen: Yakumo
    Oneesama: Anegasaki Tae
    Rich Girl: Eri
    Itsuki: Hanai (???)

  76. Personally, I think you are not so right about Evangelion. If anything Asuka seemed to be the one that Shinji liked the most (His own words “I want to be with you forever!”) and not Kaoru. Besides he ends up with Asuka. Abd they are the only people alive, even with marriege you still have more choices. So that is my basic disagreement here. Otherwise really interesting comparison, though i would have liked to see tsundere ctegory there.

  77. I suggest a new category: YUKI (and the clones)!

I guess, under the Kanon category, you might have left out a few people.
This list also takes into account the Drama CDs.

–RICH GIRL category: Wife Material Sayuri. How do we forget that!
    –CLASSMATE category: Kaori. No, seriously.
–YUKI category: Mishio Amano (and Mai Kawasumi?)

    Some typos:
–Under Geass: Nanaly Lamperouge — Nunnally Lamperouge
–Under (Kira): Flay Allstor — Flay Allster
