And the high bidder for espers, time travelers, and aliens… is Bandai. They must have mistaken Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for a Gundam series. Anyway, here’s a /hr/ version of that Santa Haruhi image from the new guerrilla marketing myspace page. Three quick thoughts: One, this announcement felt kinda lame (Myspace?!? Flat chested Mikuru?!?) and should have involved more scantily clad bunny girls. Two, seeing Bandai with Haruhi and ADV with Keroro feels like watching Ben Wallace jack up threes with Steve Nash turning into a shot blocker. Lastly, I really hope that these people will not be the English VAs.
So.. is this bad?
http://asosbrigade.com/
I laughed.
Live-action Mikuru + meido + cowering = yum
Ugh…. I sincerely hope that they do have original voices together with the…. english VAs. Not that I’d ever want to listen to the latter though.
Well, they did a “nice” job with the My-Hime DVDs. Let’s hope Haruhi doesn’t undergo the same fate.
Kadokawa USA and Bandai – winning combo
there is a reason there are copyrights in the world….ITS TO STOP STUFF LIKE THIS FROM HAPPENING! that was painful….mostly cause i know a friend who pretty much acts like haruhi (excluding the god thing, and the whole find aliens and whatnot XD
>>>Two, seeing Bandai with Haruhi and ADV with Keroro feels like watching Ben Wallace jack up threes with Steve Nash turning into a shot blocker. Lastly, I really hope that these people will not be the English VAs.
On the former, my thoughts exactly. Except without the NBA reference. However, seeing the pixeled out Gun*** in episode 11 will be even more hilarious with Bandai calling the shots. (Ih they unpixelate it, I’m firebombing their offices.)
On the latter, I didn’t have a problem with ADV if they had ended up with the license. Didn’t that is, until I tried to listen to the English dub of Pani Poni Dash. Started out okay enough. Generic narrator-sounding guy for the narrator/Alien captain, Hilary Haag for Becky, who i loved as Milk-chan and was okay with as Tessa, and who fits the character, and then Himeko… She didn’t even get a “Maho” out before I switched it back to Japanese. They’ve got her doing some kind of hyper-speed valley girl voice, which, considering the character, doesn’t sound too bad on paper, but is like balloon fingernails on a styrofoam chalkboard in practice.
Ganbatte, Bandai. And those of you who had Chris Patton as Kyon in the voice actor pool, better luck next time.
i hope nothing… goes wrong >_>
Hey, at least the essence of Kyon is there in that myspace. That’s one thing they got right, the very thing that defines Kyon is there.
Let’s hope that is the sign of a good DVD release.

~~~~ ~~~~
Well… there was a Gundam in SHnY, even if they did censor it out. ^^;
Cheers.
surprise of the century!
although, the kadokawa USA speculation was correct :3
interesting what’s goin on here… well, cheers to R1 Haruhi DVDs! :D
live action mikuru was hot.
XD
I believe that this will turn out pretty good (^^) Kadokawa USA also helped Funimation on Full Metal Panic Second Raid and it turnd out freaky good! (^^) Lots of bonus stuff. Not to mention their video was really bad lol, reminded me of the first episode of the anime which was brilliant! No Probs from me. (^_
the whole thing reeks something fierce. Funimation got TSR? news to me, but then again, i try to ignore these things on purpose to evade letdowns. one would have thought ADV would keep the licenses on all three arcs of FMP!, so i would actually be interested to know how Funimation pulled that crap off.
oh, it only took hearing the chick acting as Haruhi in that video for not even five seconds to make my headache worse. I’m grateful i can go back to hear the true voice of Haurhi, Hirano Aya, instead of that nonsense. it just won’t be the same without her. thank you a.f.k., your contribution to this world will never be forgotten…
Live-action never turns out well. English voices for anime never turns out well. Looks like this is no exception to the rule.
Well, doesn’t concern me, really. Heh.
But…but…Patricia Ja Lee! The insanely hot Pink Space Ranger!
My old crush on her has revitalized because of those that skirt, but, you know, I’d ballgag her.
How will Bandai explain the term “moe~” when Haruhi hold up a magazine with Asa and Kaede in it?
I’m mildly amused that Kyon is friends with someone named “Internet Jesus”.
Bandai will just likely pull something irrelevant like “Here Kyon, buy these mangas after class”.
BANDAI?! I hope they won´t will not screw around with Haruhi like they did with Mai-hime.
Still, A early christmas present with a funny video
(Episode 00,anyone?).
I just watched the video… it’s disgusting.
>> I believe that this will turn out pretty good
Except it took Bandai two years to get it’s last prime non-Gundam franchise out the door. Oh, well, they have immunity from me since they remastered the original Jubei-chan into 5.1 surround.
>> I’m mildly amused that Kyon is friends with someone named “Internet Jesusâ€. Bandai will just likely pull something irrelevant like “Here Kyon, buy these mangas after classâ€.
Myspace is a world that I don’t understand. Anyway, I hope that we get at least a cameo from Churuya or be tossed a bone by having a stack of smoked cheese somewere. That would be awesome. BTW, for a clip that’s pushing people to buy the DVDs, it didn’t exactly offer a date now, did it?
>> On the former, my thoughts exactly. Except without the NBA reference.
Maybe I should rephrase it to “like watching a live action Mikuru stumble around with a-cups.”
>> How will Bandai explain the term “moe~†when Haruhi hold up a magazine with Asa and Kaede in it?
It’ll be digitally altered to be a magazine with Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice on front instead.
>> But…but…Patricia Ja Lee! The insanely hot Pink Space Ranger! My old crush on her has revitalized because of those that skirt, but, you know, I’d ballgag her.
Yep, these are my readers.
Ahaha, metahumor. Pretty darn funny on multiple levels, especially if it was AoD that made the video, w/ or w/o corporate funding.
But seriously, no reason to be real negative about anything. SHnY is coming to the US! Those who don’t mind too much will be able to watch DVD-quality episodes, dubbed if they like. Purists will still watch their HD TV rips with hand-lettered soft subs, while watching the extras on the DVDs and contributing back to the mother conglomerate in Japan.
Speaking of which, since I’m lazy, has anyone bothered to sub the HD RAW versions? I was under the impression that a.f.k. used them as a basis of their normal resolution encodes, but full size/glory would be rather nice.
checking out kyon’s myspace page and saw this under the blog: “In exchange for mentioning the US release of the The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya DVDs, we get supplies for our next student film.” Where’s my season 2?
I’m glad their being esoteric about it and not portraying it as it was some American made thing (aka another Shadow Warrior Chronicles). People who don’t know what Haruhi is would go wtf when seeing it, but that’s not who they’re appealing to, and frankly that’s the smart thing to do.
Are other licensings like this, or is this unique?
>>>Rivensteel Says: Speaking of which, since I’m lazy, has anyone bothered to sub the HD RAW versions?
I found ultra quality raws and on whim subbed the second episode based on afk’s translations by myself. I actually think that I did a pretty good job, but I am one person and felt rather sick after listening to mono quality Kyon over and over again.
>>Maybe I should rephrase it to “like watching a live action Mikuru stumble around with a-cups.â€
YTIJB.
(Yes, This Is Jason’s Blog.)
I would say that video was infinitly more entertaining then Hahiru………..
And I would totally place bets that there will at least be a preview of the show by the time Summer Conventions rollaround.
But ya, I’m not entirely convinced those actors should be the official VA’s.
Hate, hate, HATE the “A” addition to the SOS Brigade.
The only bit of that video I liked was the insertion of the “O RLY?” cats. The rest was just… painful. Haruhi not perky enough, just bitchy. Yuki not understated enough. Mikuru not anywhere near moe enough.
If they follow the original’s example, the next video should announce the release of DVD volume 3.
Oh hey, Mangator.. to the bottem of the replies, and finally someone I agree with. What is that “A” doing there, anyways? I thought I missed something. o.o
Ah.. I’ve been waiting for Haruhi R1’s for a while, so I can have pretty DVDs lined up on my shelf.. but now I’m starting to think.. not so much so.. ^^;;
I liked it when the cat talked.
Where’s my smoked cheese?!
PSYCHICS?! ASOS?! I need to sit down and sort this out for a while… Why psychics… OTL
…do people not have a clue?
The “A” is there because this is Haruhi bringing the SOS Brigade to America. There’s WON’T be an A there in the actual show. Obviously.
As for the dub, these are almost definitely not the actual dub VAs, (though Pink Ranger Girl could do a good Haruhi, and has apparently done anime dubbing before), and no matter what, THE DVDS WILL HAVE THE JAPANESE. So don’t get all worked up.
As for the HiME debacle, Bandai realized their error and starting with Volume 5 have totally changed the company that puts the DVD together, the dub is still meh, but there wasn’t really anything they could do about that at this point.
And finally, Gundam is hardly the only thing Bandai releases, and I fail to see how the length of time it took them to release Zeta has anything to do with anything.
Oh…and strictly speaking, Bandai didn’t license this. The License is held by Kadokawa, with Bandai contracted by them to produce the show.
They refer to it as the ASOS brigade in the video. Nowhere is it stated that its only for the American release. I’d think people are justified in their outrage (if they so feel like being so).
What?
The “ASOS Brigade” refers to whats going on in the VIDEO. Do you honestly think they are going to change it to that in the show?
Are you crazy? There’s nothing to get “outraged” about here, justifiably or not. ITS A NON-ISSUE
With regards to that Santa-Haruhi pic…
It’s just a trace I did a couple of weeks ago :)
Fencedude was already said what I was going to say.
This video is not a representation of what we will actually be getting in terms of voice acting. It’s intentionally bad, just like episode zero. I wouldn’t be suprised to see Patricia Jay Lee voice someone, but what was there isn’t indicative of what we will actually get.
Honestly, I think this whole announcement has been handled brilliantly. Someone was having a lot of fun with all those hidden messages, the myspace page, and the current webpage.
I am not, by any means, happy with how Bandai has handled their DVD releases as of late. But they look to be making a turn around and this a great chance for them to fix things. Considering the effort they are making with this announcement, I think they will put forth the effort and make this a good DVD release.
On a side note, did anyone watch the credits at the end? Pay attention to the Special Thanks section.
At least they pointed out that they appreciate people who watch the fansubs AS LONG as u bought the original japanese dvd. the video was painful to watch but after the first half it wasnt as bad. Except when they showed that person who was suppose to be yuki (i was going WTF in my head and close to grabbing the pencil on my desk and stabbing my eyes out). the person who did mikuru…. shes cute in her own way but not mikuru. also after patricia lee said “we are going to sell ourselves to the americans” i was thinking why the hell is she moving her head like that. anyways that random scene where their in the parking lot, i could barely make out that cement sign far in the back. it said, C***** technology center, so if anyone thinks they know where that place is, try guessing it. I have a 98% feeling that thats in california for some reason
>What?
>The “ASOS Brigade†refers to whats going on in the VIDEO. Do you honestly think they are going to change it to that in the show?
First of all, what reason on earth would there be for them to refer to themselves as ASOS rather than as SOS?! Secondly, you’re getting way too worked up about this.
>First of all, what reason on earth would there be for them to refer to themselves as ASOS rather than as SOS?!
I’d presume they are calling it the ASOS because.. the website they are using for the video is asosbrigade.com.
The whole amateur video thing is directed to the American audience. I’d figure everywhere else it’d be “sos dan”.
