Mine is a drill that pierces… uh… man, I should have known from Shinji and Kaoru that Gainax would also swing that way.

Gurren Lagann is in a weird place. Some of its greatest moments and battles have already passed, and I hope Gainax is trying furiously to avoid tossing us monster of the week / gigadrill of the week. I’m not sure what to expect. This episode was kinda weird as I kept thinking about other shows while watching it and thought, “Wow, they really amped up the homoerotic overtones this episode.”

Gundam! Sunrise and Bandai are the masters of the “one vs. the world” type of scenarios. Seeing the money shot of Gurren Lagann confronting the air fleet by itself, well, that’s something Wing Zero, Freedom, and Epyon would do.

On that same note, remember how Lacus morphed from pop star/political activist to useless bridge decoration? Poor Yoko. She’s not even carrying her rifle on the bridge.

Macross! I know missile contrails are as part of anime as underaged school girls, but that doesn’t stop me from thinking about Macross everytime I see ’em.

Futurama! I can’t be the only person thinking, “Hey, that’s the Zapp Brannigan strategy!”

(Andohbytheway, all those reinforcements that showed up… I’m not sure what they look like more, the old Gundam spaceships or the old Gundam spaceships with mean faces where their schlongs would be. Needless to say, something is fishy with Gurren Lagann.)

When I saw Nia’s projection, I was thinking, “Minmay defense!” Unfortunately, Nia didn’t sing just repeat Simon’s and Kamina’s now infamous “My drill is a drill that pierces the heavens” speech… which leads to…

… wait, that’s Gurren Lagann drilling the backside of Mole-man’s defenses. The graphic that is used to illustrate how the drill is penetrating the fortress really hit it home, and, coupled with Nia’s on-going speech, this is, by far, the most homoerotic episode of Gurren Lagann. And I haven’t even gotten to the flying battleship x flying battleship action.

Now on second thought, yeah, it was a good thing for Kamina to die. If he had stayed alive for another three or four episodes, we’d find out that they reason Simon was jealous of Kamina’s and Yoko’s kiss isn’t because of Yoko. Whew. But I wonder if Gainax knows that they are introducing some serious overtones, and if they don’t, I hope they realize that while Leeron is actually funny and brings stuff to the table, the mecha on mecha action is just getting creepy.

(Yeah, slow week… or maybe I’m just facepalm’ed from hearing that ADV has licensed Gurren Lagann.)

    OK, I don’t watch Gurren Lagann at all (I don’t usually watch mecha), but just reading your comments is enjoyable enough. LOL at the Zap Branigan strategy.

    Is it bad that I understand pretty much every single one of your references despite never having seen Gundam SEED or Macross?

    I had to make a mad dash to download this show after hearing the fact that it got liscenced and how much you praise it….. or at least blog about it. I haven’t really read to much to make sure I don’t spoil a show I plan to watch.

    I seriously doubt it… though I haven’t watched that ep in Inukami.

    Anyway an ok episode this week. All the solo GARness from Simon has died down. Indeed, like what Jason said, GL is at a weird place now that all the exciting bits are over. What will happen next? Something tells me Gainax is going to do something very unpredictable in the next few eps.

    And I suspect we’ll see the time jump into the future very soon indeed.

    So…anyone wonder how the reinforcements are capable of capturing a fleet of flying ganmen to aid in this battle? I guess the furry pilots decided to park their suits near human villages across the land, leaving their keys in the ignition…or something

    The super mecha pelvic thrust is almost as awesome as Aphrodite A’s boob missiles from the Mazinger universe.

    But yeah, I was devastated when they did that to NIA. Imagine how the Yoko fans will react if the same happened to Yoko. I think Jason will go ballistic on his posts :D

    I don;t think Gainax has the balls to try. They love their own girls too much (Rei/Asuka anyone?). Maybe Nia got unlucky cause they wanted to experiment with shota hairstyles…

    Anyways kinda sad that it got licensed, gonna have to wait for expensive ah-meh-ri-kan dvds now.
