best of 2009: #9

#9: Darker Than Black: Gemini of the Meteor

“It would have been better if we’ve never met.”

Also wins for 2009:

  • Best Pining For a Girl Out of Your League
  • Best Pining For a Guy Out of Your League
  • Best Sniper
  • Most Ridiculous Ending

Let’s see… great animation, coherent (mostly) season-long plot, Hei the cagey veteran, Suou the lost rookie, and a great what-if love triangle between Hei, Suou, and Yin… except Hei’s like twice their age, Suou’s original template had a penis, and Yin… well… is Yin. The season-long serial formula works a bit better than the two episodes-per-story formula of the original series, and the great fight sequences and gruesome deaths are still part of the show. There’s a lot less humor and light moments and a lot more dark humor and angst, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Hei, for one, feels a lot more desperate than in the first season, and a lot less idealistic. I do like his “everyone can go to hell; I just want Yin” attitude. My scruffy beard was also awesome– just proves that anime characters cannot grow a decent beard. My biggest knock about this second season is the ending. Just felt utterly pulled out from one’s ass… I half expected Battler and Beatrice to show up and debate it.

(Gainax called… they want their ending back, Bones!)

  1. Should also probably win for “Most Women Slapped or Beaten”. Hei was fucking relentless.

  2. I’m surprised this made the list. Then again it is #9, so it just barely made the list.

  3. Don’t worry, it’ll all make sense in the movie finale “End of Black”

  4. It should also win for best child abuse.

  5. I agree with you for the most part, though I don’t necessarily think the serial formula works better or that it is somehow superior for Hei to be desperate. I think it worked well that this season had those differences in contrast to the previous. :)

lmao! I half expected some more knocks on DTB somewhere along the line, but hey; it made this list (which is something to celebrate right). I agree more with you than I disagree which is uncommon for DTB, but I realized we’re looking for something different in anime a long time ago. I personally liked Season One better, but I can see how a consistent plot might be more attractive for other viewers :P.

    Then again:

WTF was up with the ending. The OVAs should have probably been released first as at least they’re filling in some of the gaping plot holes brought about by the second season.

  7. DTB1: Hei ignores a female detective his own age and ends up with a much younger Yin.
DTB2: Hei abandons Yin and starts traveling with a even younger girl named Suou.
    DTB3: ???

    I think I see a pattern. Who’s left? July?

  8. @Roy Mustang: Actually, after the events of DTB2, Hei cleans up his act and starts working at a kindergarten.

  9. @ragingduck: Hei’s lame excuses (I’m going to unzip your jacket to look for a pendant…whoops I did I just touch your breasts?…I had NO idea you were a girl.) wouldn’t last two seconds before Chris Hanson storms the kindergarten daycare.

What Hei needs is a cover…a less threatening appearence than a 30 year old man in a black trenchcoat…

Look at how cute Mao is.

  10. Are you people watching the OVAS? Its full of Hei and Yin
