#6: Tears to Tiara
“*whack whack* Lord Arawn defeated his enemies.”
Also wins for 2009:
- Best Bromance
- Best Apple-Addicted Elves
- Best Instant Waifu
- Best Swashbuckling Female Pair
- Best Twenty-Six Episode Plan
- Best Cow Milking Scene
If I told you back in 2008 that 2009 would feature a twenty-six episode long serial anime featuring massive bromance (actually, two bromantic couples spanning two time periods), some “Wait, I thought he was dead!” moments, and a harem full of supple females that are completely ignored by the main protagonist due to said bromance, you would have wondered, “Wait, Sunrise made a third season of Code Geass?!” And you would have been wrong. Tears to Tiara has all those ingredients… and… gasp… it’s not a train wreck. Far from it. It has an epic sweeping storyline, a sensible plot progression, and apple-addicted elves. I enjoyed the progression of Arawn’s plan, the fight scenes (Riannon… non-useless and very capable… a revelation), and a backstory that makes more sense than Shadow Warrior Chronicle’s.
My only complaint is that even though this is based off of a harem game, it completely forsaken its harem roots. I liked how Arawn kept acquiring waifus in the game… wish some of that comedy translated over. It’s always funny to see how long can they string along the, “Because Arawn broke this, she is now his waifu” subplot. But, alas, even though he acquires many skilled haremettes, he never really forms a harem. Both Hakuoro and Tiger Woods are disappointed in Arawn.
Except the ignoring of waifu thing is Hakuro’s schtick, so he should be okay. Kogarashi would probably have some advice and a ‘Ku ku ku’ though.
Pretty meh for me. Both the game and anime are vastly inferior to Utawarerumono.
Speaking of Utwarerumono, there were 2 new OVA plus a picture drama that came out last year. Make sure you’ve checked it out!
Please stop calling it Shadow Warrior Chronicles… oh it hurts the ears…
So that ending actually made sense to someone? I felt like after the successful defense of the city plot ended everything went 6 ways to Sunday and in almost every subsequent ep left me feeling like I’d missed something rather important between the end of the previous ep and the beginning of the one I was watching.
