lucky ☆ star 17

Everything that you do seems to go wrong, and it spirals out of control to the point that you don’t feel like you can piece the heavens with your drill anymore.

I think I’ll start with Lucky Channel today since that had the most amount of plot-like substance the whole episode. We’re really grinding away here now at the “bunch of even less coherent storylines” portion of Lucky Star. I’m just dying for something– anything!– to happen: giant robots showing up that force them to synchronized swim, a time slip seven years into the future, a poison gas explosion… anything. Meanwhile, Meito makes an appearance on Lucky Channel, and I’m disappointed that Akira didn’t lay the smackdown on him. She was kinda subdued, which was disturbing because I think it would take about the same level of pyscho-reprogramming and drugs that it took to mellow out Rena to mellow out Akira.

Oddly, I do find myself agreeing with Meito. It takes a lot to make a good anime series, and one cannot be arrogant to think that it just takes some star seiyuu, a good script, and some decent art. I find things like time, the behind-the-scenes cast, and the love of the work to be just as important. If someone is just meeting deadlines or just trying to make a quick buck, they’re probably not going to devote 100% effort in doing the best job possible, whereas someone who does have the time and passion would probably do their best damn possible job. I find the same way with blogging sometimes… after writing for, what, five years now, I can say that if I enjoy writing something, I generally do a better job at it.

While I think Kyoto is trying to have fun with Lucky Star, it doesn’t solve the fundamental issue that it takes more than just passion, and it’s not an either/or question with story/art vs. passion/time but an “and.” Lucky Star just doesn’t have the punch to stick around for 26 episodes (remember, Azumanga went through a high school’s worth of stories in 26 episodes, moving along much faster than Lucky Star), and it’s star is fading. Fortunately, Taniguchi being Taniguchi and all the self-referencing is keeping the things afloat.

It’s probably like the fifth or sixth funniest show on right now… behind SZS, Doujin Work, Umisho, Hayate, and depending on how you feel about Higurashi.

Finally! A next gen console. You know that the Wii has won if (1) the local Fry’s is still sold out yet have stacks and stacks of PS3s and (2) they replaced the PS2 on Lucky Star with a Wii especially since the Lucky Star game is forthcoming on the PS2 and not the Wii. I like (2) is more important than (1). Though I like Yutaka’s “close my eyes and hope for the best” technique.

(Upcoming AoMM post: “How anime and manga have forever changed my view of tissue boxes near nubile…” Maybe not.)

image

“That makes me angry, and when Yutaka gets angry, Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset, and when Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset people die!!!”

image

Not even Konata wants to touch the Higurashi light novels.

image

If I had to guess time slip professions for all the Lucky Star girls:

Miyuki: Waitress at Hooters
Konata: Hikikomori engaged in R.M.T.
Kagami: Subway spokeswoman (“I lost 180lbs eating Subway sandwiches. You can too!!!”)
Tsukasa: Discovers cure for cancer

image

“I can play hentai games now!” We need to pair Konata up with Doujin Work‘s Tsuyuri. Andohbytheway, why would Konata play h-games? For the plot? For the hawt x-rated material? For the gameplay?

(You know what would be a huge moneymaker? A hentai MMORPG. I can see it now… World of Fate/Stay Night: Wrath of the Black Saber. Even better if it were available for the Wii…)

image

Kagami muses about how literacy enriches the mind and then Konata makes the comment about how snacks enriches the body… what does twincest doujinshi, meido fuku, and custard-filled melonpan enrich? I need to know these things… before it’s too late.

image

Whew. Self-referencing to a minimum. Why can they say “Keroro” but they can’t say “Pokemon”?

image

The last few seasons of 24 have not been up to par, and the concept is kinda getting old. I can understand one day. Two days. But six? Seven?!? They need to go out on top like Cheers and not on the bottom like The X-Files, which is where 24 is currently headed. They need to mix it up and replace Jack Bauer with different CTU agents every season. Like next season we can get Jack McClaine. Or even Taniguchi.

(I love ranting on about 24… the most unbelievable part of that show to me is how Jack Bauer can drive from one area of LA to another during a commercial break. I can’t even go one exit sometimes on 5 with that traffic.)

image

5, 7, 6, 8. Nothing. Just thinking to myself.

image

The dad has the rounded off eyes whereas Belldandy has the more shifty eyes. Tsukasa got her eyes from the father side whereas Kagami got hers from the mom. This is what I notice when there isn’t enough comedy or moe or fanservice or Haruhi concerts to keep my attention.

image

I love this shot of LOL FANG-SENSEI. “JAGAN!”

image

Just thinking to myself again, but wouldn’t this be the most epic threesome in anime history?

image

Taniguchi is a national treasure. Though they’re almost out of songs with 9 more shows left. What will they do? I’m really hoping for a Taniguchi and Aya Hirano duet for Minami Kaze now.

    so if that’s belldandy…the hiiragi’s father is…OH SHI~

No, no it would not. (Really, how can you give Kagamin a 5 but consider threesomes with Akira?)

  3. Doujin Work is damn funny.
I figure Tsuyuri and Konata would get along nicely, only tsuyuri would be writing/drawing the doujins and konata would just end up reading them, I doubt she would have enough patience and willpower to sit down and write something like that.
I’m glad they’re deviating from the norm in Lucky channel, one episode of dual attitude akira was enough, yet they dragged that redundancy on for something of 14-15 eps, I hope they keep mixing it up.
Do you really consider Zetsubou Sensei to be “funnier” than Lucky Star? I always just found it to be slightly amusing enough to enjoy, its never actually made me laugh.

  4. No kidding! I can never understand that! Of course, a 24 more grounded in reality would have Jack sitting in traffic trying to merge onto the 405 for half the season. >_

  5. Doh, I fail at the internet, and also at using the blockquote tag…

  6. Hmmm… custard-filled melonpan. My favourite when I was in Japan. I miss those >.

    What, no Potemayo?

  8. I honestly enjoyed the scene with the four sisters and the interaction between them. I thought it was pretty tender and sweet.

Kagami has really won me over… her and Konata are the kind of gals I’d hang out with just to watch them bicker sarcastically with each other.

Of course, neither of them would beat spending a day with Kuroi-sensei… that would be an episode that needs to happen… with Taniguchi, even!

  9. Hello,

I don’t remember how I found your blog, but anyhow. I’m currently watching Lucky Star. At first it seems kind of plotless and unlike typical anime. I don’t remember why I continued, but it became really entertaining as I proceed. In a way, it reminds me of my friends and I in high school.

  10. if you had a friend in high school who was
    1.blue haired
    2.plays mmos and h-games
    3. has more manga than the shop next door has in stock
    4.works as a cosplay cafe
    5. pwn even the average male at vid games.

And the others are a walking wikipedia, probably the most awesome moe/tsundere(yes, i know, wrong usage, but nvm taniguchi for now) twins evar and had uber blonde japanese teachers.

Hioko, your friends are made of win and awesome.

I’m sorry, but you must be mistaking this for some other generic anime blog. THIS IS SPARTA! I’m not looking at the moe or erotic implications of such a threesome but rather the unintentional comedy of such an endeavor. Now that would be funny.

Wutsurpoint? Lucky Star isn’t exactly ROTFLCOPTER either. In the end, it’s just pissing contest: my funny bone is funnier than your funny bone! Though, honestly, Higurashi is approaching new levels of funniness, not because of the show itself, but the blog and forum posts it spurns. That counts for something, doesn’t it?

  12. Jason Said:”Fortunately, Taniguchi being Taniguchi and all the self-referencing is keeping the things afloat.”

Hehe….You noticed that too eh. I can’t help but feel there is another path to keeping things fresh than too bust out the Haruhi et al though. Original gags about the characters could work too. The characters are archetypes afterall and they lend themselves to freestyle gag writing very well as a result. Kyoani needs to work on their original content and not be afraid to at least give it they’re all. That’s the only way they’re really going to evolve from the studio that did Haruhi to a full blown operation.

Well, that explains how Kagami’s family runs a temple, anyways. ;) I’m just wondering where Skuld, Urd, and Peorth ran off to, now….

  14. Upon reading that sentence back to myself again I should not have posed that as a general question, I think I was just trying to make a more personal opinion on the matter. I know very well everyone finds different forms of comedy to be more to their liking, I’ve seen people who find Excel saga hilarious and then there are others like myself who find it to be the most boring epitome of slapstick comedy i’ve ever seen. Sorry if I offended you it wasn’t my intent.

  15. Isn’t it pretty weird when they try to stick in scenes that are supposed to be sad and heartbreaking (the Hiiragi siblings mad at each other)
Then again, this only happens with Kagami, doesn’t it?

Same person. There is no way that this many people actually waste time ranting about a bad moe slice of life show designed for shut-ins.
“That makes me angry, and when Yutaka gets angry, Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset, and when Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset people die!!!”
You reference Austin Powers and you still fail to be funny, how interesting.

tl;dr This is blog is awful.

  17. Just had this thought – Akira Kogami is competing in SaiMoe at the end of the month (against Yaya Nanto from Strawberry Panic and Ayumu from Hayate). It would be entirely in character for her to campaign for herself on air. And it would be completely in line with the rest of this show.

  18. I wish there was no way people would actually waste time trolling blogs, but horny, nubile nekomimi meido will fly out of my hot geek ass before that happens.

On a completely different note, I feel like the only person watching Lucky Star for something other than references and still thinking it’s awesome. For me, the best parts are the “oh that’s so true” moments, albeit especially so when it involves otaku culture. A good example of one of these moments would be a few episodes back when they’re discussing Konata’s knowledge of robot show characters and the conversation ends up implying Kona’s dad otakuism isn’t so much for robot shows as, uh… shows aimed at little girls.

I hear that Kagami and Maria (Hayate no Gotoku) are also up against each other in round 1. Yikes! Ultimately, I like Kagami better though.

  20. Yep, they’re in group D11 with Akira Ferrari from ARIA. They’ll be competing on August 27th. (Kurogane at http://kurogane.animeblogger.net/ is doing a good job covering it – he’s got a full bracket with dates at http://kurogane.animeblogger.n.....-matchups/ .)

  21. Speaking of Saimoe… am I the only one disturbed to find Jun Watarase among the contestants?

  22. I second Xeifa’s comment. As for Lucky Star, some people are saying it’s loseing it’s awesomeness, but I’m still enjoying it alot. I’ll admit that Taniguchi is LOL though.

  23. No mention of the two G-Gundam reference?
