the world god only knows 10

“I can live my life in the world of books.”

Damn, unfortunately Shiori from the manga is totally dominating The World God Only Knows mindshare. There’s just something to how she goes from this quiet, bookish librarian to this talkative, smut-writing tour de force back to a quiet, overmatched librarian just because she caught Keima with a reverse trap.

(I’m still not sure how Shiori would feel about a Kindle or an iPad. True, they don’t have the same romantic notion as a book, but not many people have romantic notions about cheap paperbacks. I can’t even recall the last book I truly cherished. Books just don’t have the same meaning today when information can be had everywhere.)

image

“You continue to surprise me with your ability to fearlessly make a bad impression.”

Is Elsee comparing Keima to Sarah Palin?

(And did Elsee just question Keima, “Who do you think you are, Kami-sama?” as in questioning god about god?)

image

“Geez, I’m getting used to seeing you make girls angry.”

Keima basically has three capture modes: the supportive friend, the prince, and the tsundere. For Ayumi and Sumire, he basically supported them in their endeavors. For Mio and Minami, he was their prince. (For Yui, well, Yui was… err… is his prince.) For Kanon and Shiori… he most definitely took the tsundere route. Tsundere just works. In fact, Obama is currently acting all tsundere towards Republicans, Jeter is acting tsundere towards the Yanks, and the Grinch is acting tsundere towards Christmas. Tsundere all around!

(It’s not like I’m pointing this out for you or anything…)

image

“It’s a huge shiny, red fire truck!”

“She’s going to be useless again.”

Come on. Don’t lump Elsee into useless luminaries like Marina Ismail, Relena Peacecraft, and Fuko-chan. Elsee is at least marginally useful with her ability to piece together shredded documents and speckling drywall.

(I can so imagine Elsee treating that two-page spread of a fire truck the same way Kirino treats a two-page spread of Meruru.)

I totally do not get the whole liver girl thing. The manga confused me on this, and now the anime. Still, Big Boy Elsee (shouldn’t she be holding a hamburger at this point) plus FrankenFran Keima are a good diversion. And, yeah, FrankenFran is probably number three on my “most need to be animated” list behind Sword Art Online and Yandere Kanojo.

image

I like the details on her eyes. I also like her “arigatron.” Sounds like something Ika Musume would say de gaso.

image

The way Shiori retreats into her book world was kinda sad, but it did remind me of a poor man’s Fantasia for some strange reason. Though couldn’t Keima be accused of the same thing for escaping into his world of gal games?

(When Shiori talks about how she can learn everything one can learn by reading books, I thought about how Matt Damon screamed at Robin Williams about how books can teach everything, and Robin Williams fires back about how you can read about love but you cannot feel love through books. How about dem apples? I think it’s Good Will Hunting. I could be wrong. Surely not Legally Blonde.)

image

Death penalty for writing in a book? Come on. It’s not like Keima was leaking secret diplomatic gossip cables or anything.

image

“Your inside and outside voices have switched.”

When Shiori started talking, Keima won. I wrote, “Game over” in my notebook (even though I know how this ends already but still). It’s exactly like the Jets punting on fourth down when they were behind by 21 points on Monday. Game-fucking-over.

image

One, I can’t believe Keima owns a book that is not gaming related. Two, I can’t believe Keima would own a book titled “Cat’s Angel”. Three, I can’t believe Shiori didn’t instantly know it wasn’t a library book. Her radar must be malfunctioning.

When Shiori gets made and her hair starts floating up, doesn’t it remind you of a typical Ghilbi heroine?

image

In our modern age, she’s just write a 50,000 word blog entry instead of a creepy 100 page book report. I wonder what Shiori’s Twitter feed would look like?

… @shiorilovesbooks99
… @shiorilovesbooks99
… @shiorilovesbooks99
@capturing_god BAKA!!! @shiorilovesbooks99
d @shiorilovesbooks99 He shouldn’t be allowed in the library! @shiorilovesbooks99

… @shiorilovesbooks99

Of course, Elsee’s feed would look a lot like mine:

  1. oh come on Elsee is NOT useless just because she lik- OH LOOK SHINY RED FIRE TRUCK!!!

  2. That isn’t Franken Fran, it’s Black Jack.

Also, I believe Keima’s reference is that you can tell what someone is feeling by how frustrated you can make them at any given subject. He’s using that skill to get her to talk.

    Someone please enlighten me…

  4. Basically, the analogy of a liberal arts girl with the liver is that the liver is considered an “underrated” organ of the human body because compared to the heart, brain, and lungs, it isn’t as prominent or visible. But just because it’s quiet, that doesn’t mean it isn’t active on the inside – it helps to detoxify, it helps produce chemicals for digestion, and several other vital functions of the body. Likewise, just because the liberal arts girl is quiet on the outside doesn’t mean she isn’t passionate or feel strongly about particular issues.

  5. > “Though couldn’t Keima be accused of the same thing for escaping into his world of gal games?”
Well yes. Multiple times TWGOK draws parallels between Keima’s dysfunctionality and the girl’s situation. He has taken note, too, as he can’t be said to have the same attitude now as in the starting chapters.

  6. I’m not usually a fan of the mousy types, and Shiori was just kind of interesting to me in the manga. But the faltering “B-bakaaa-a-a!” and drawn out “A-ahooo-o!” were just too adorable for me. I had to pause the video.

And yes, the Studio Ghibli heroines usually have their hackles rise when they’re freaked out, but the comparison never occurred to me!

There is no way in hell she would throw books under the bus for a Kindle/iPad. Doesn’t Keima piss her off by making this same statement?

  8. So cute. Loved Keima’s silent bullying of Shiori at the reception desk and his observation that it was easier to find out if she remembered or not because she didn’t speak. Yui was great too, boldly approaching Keima, then pulling him onto her on the sofa for a chat. It will be criminal if she turns out not to have a goddess while Tsukiko, who I’d probably rank near the bottom of the haremette list does.

Oh, this episode is actually surprisingly non-terrible too. If only they’d done as good a job for Keima’s voice as they had for Shiori’s.

  9. That’s Black Jack and Elsie is a spoof of his companion, nig.

  10. >The way Shiori retreats into her book world was kinda sad, but it did remind me of a poor man’s Fantasia for some strange reason. Though couldn’t Keima be accused of the same thing for escaping into his world of gal games?

Except Keima actually likes being in his games, Shiori just uses books as a form of escapism.

  11. though the fair thing was a tad unnecessary , but great ep this week too.
about franken fran, i think manglobe is animating that too, don’t remember where i read this though so i’m not sure about the accuracy of this, but then again, they do have a pretty spread out lineup of past releases so the possibilities are high

  12. Everyone have survived this episode (some bloggers went down after watching it, Jason seems immune to Shiori’s wrath of god.) probably they didn’t rewatch it as their lives are not enough to withstand Kana Hanazawa’s +9000 moe voice. If I would do a ranking by the end of the year. Shiori is now at my number 1 slot, followed by Mikan Yuuki, then Kuroneko (I still can’t get to used her real name), with Kanade “Tenshi” sliding down at no.4 spot, and Nadeko at no.5

  13. What’s with the Republican and Fuko bashing? Obviously tsundere.

  14. Speaking of Ika Musume de geso, Mako-cakes Mk. II has finally appeared in episode 9…
