Besides finishing out Mahoro and FLCL, there are some great 1-shot anime releases coming up that I plan on picking up:
Read or Die, 5/27, 3×30 minutes, $30.
Check out my long neglected R.O.D. page for details. It’s basically anime X-Men with a much cuter lead character. Excellent visuals, catchy soundtrack, and great plot twists all throughout.
Hoshi no Koe, 6/10, 1×30 minutes, $20.
Sadly, I think hype hurt this title a lot. When I first heard about it, I thought it was going to be the best thing since progressive scan DVDs. Then I discovered it’s just a girl typing on her cell phone for 20 minutes, but, well, the visuals are very stunning for the other 10 minutes. Yet, it’s a very moving story about long distance relationships, and that’s something a lot of us can relate to… just this one has mecha… lotsa mecha. Kinda pricey for 30 minutes of anime, but it was all done by one man and his iMac, and you gotta support that.
Cowboy Bebop– Heaven’s Door, 6/24, 128 minutes, $27.
While Hoshi no Koe had fanboy hype, Bebop gets major studio hype as the movie is being released by Sony. It takes place before the final arc of the TV series, and it has Spike, Jet, and the rest of the gang on another adventure. I can’t think of another anime action movie that I would rather watch.
Out of the three, Bebop will appeal to people who don’t watch a lot of anime the most. It has action, a nice space cowboy theme, spicy Jazz soundtrack, and Faye. (Though she’s not really in it for long.) For the fanboys, Hoshi no Koe would be the better choice cuz most fanboys already love it and can compare all the Macross references.
