xbox for n00bs

This past weekend, we had a lot of old (and new) friends stop by the house. Most of the time, we talked, ate, watched DVDs, and played XBOX. I thought it was funny how the DVDs that the guys wanted to watch included Monsters Inc and Fantasia while the girls wanted to watch Gladiator and Hero.

With the PS2 currently mothballed and the GCN awaiting new component video cables, the only working gaming system is the XBOX. Most people don’t play XBOX it was an interesting experience trying to get n00bs to play enjoyably:

1. Games that focus on deathmatch like Halo and Time Splitters 2 are poor choices because the poor n00bs will get 0wned. They also complain about getting “dizzy”.

2. Co-op games like Ghost Recon are also poor choices since most n00bs aren’t team players. N00bs are also extremely trigger happy. I love getting grenaded by my own teammate.

3. The guys loved DOAX, and the girls didn’t. Go figure. I would have thought they’d enjoy a game about dressing up Barbie in various “swimsuits” and accessories.

3.5. The DOA chix0r that was most fought for (since you can’t have dupes in a game) was Hitomi.

4. I couldn’t hear Sega GT because all of the whining that “Gran Turismo is better.” I personally couldn’t care less– I don’t like driving games.

5. Deathrow was a good game until a team of four n00bs managed to beat the computer on “xtreme” difficulty on their first try. The game is a joke in terms of how easy it is.

6. The game that people enjoyed the most and I thought worked the best was Mechassault . It is very easy to pick-up and learn, has simple controls, and a definite rewards system. Beat up an enemy mech, watch it explode in a satisfying manner, run over the debris for powerups. The game also features a large selection of mechs, and people enjoyed trying out new mechs. The best part is that it takes a lot to take down a mech, so when I get pinged with a few missiles of friendly fire, it doesn’t hurt as much as a bullet to the head in Ghost Recon.
