in malaysia, pr0n means anime

A Malaysian tabloid had, on its front page no less, “that animation with sex is popularly called anime.” First Canada, now Malaysia? Are we failing as a community that even now, over a decade after Sailor Moon, most people around the globe still thinks of anime as pr0n? Are we too busy watching Mai Otome and building Saber models to properly evanglize our hobby? Nah… can’t be…

  1. Kosmo is a small-time Malay newspaper which has a very low circulation and read by people whose education level is no better than the writers themselves.

People over here know that anime is not prOn. They still think its cartoons but the majority knows the difference between animes and prOn.

Unlike the Edmonton Journal incident, this one is unlikely to be taken notice of by the general public.

  2. Edmonton’s half the size of San Jose… seriously, I think the problem is that most people think of anime as either (1) Sailor Moon or (2) Pokemon. Beyond the “Librarian Guide’s to Anime,” there really hasn’t been any attempt in the community to better preach the product to the mainstream, and companies aren’t exactly doing a bang-up job of that (recalling ADV’s Sister Princess promos). I’d really like to see a “Commonman’s Anime Blog” surface sometime and take up this banner. But, I’ll stick with the nekomimi meido…

  3. Why….but we are, to bring real anime to the masses.

    Including the nekomimi meido…

  4. “Animasi seks yang lebih popular dengan panggilan Anime dijual secara berleluasa dengan harga RM15 sekeping.”

Excuse me? Hellooooo… Since when Anime = Sex?

Pft… This goes to show some people are really like “katak di bawah tempurung” (naive peeps) when it comes to less popular Anime.

I’d like to tell the reporter to suck an egg and “padan muka” but ah well… I’ll just let the other fans have their go at his throat. Love to see him making a public apology one day. Lucky for him, that article wasn’t published in a more well-known newspaper like The Star…

  5. omg
    pron=anime
    good lord
jom kita saman kosmo ramai ramai =[

  6. PrOn=anime that’s just ridiculous..

[“To categorically equate anime with animated pornography is the dumbest journalism we have had on this earth. At least, if the KOSMO! journalists are unsure of facts, they must bother to check instead of shooting at their own temple.”]

people just still couldn’t differiciate between anime and cartoon nowadays…..its just not ‘katak bawah tempurung’ but hey it’s destroying the image of anime as well…

  7. Hmm… You’re right. But when it comes to writing an article, shouldn’t the reporter do substantial research first before publishing something that’s bound to be a rather controversial topic? Unless it’s a forum article. But then again… I guess they just took what they saw for granted and didn’t expect it would trigger this kind of reaction. Heck, I’m contradicting myself in the end. Nevertheless, I still agree with everyone that it’s ruining Anime’s reputation. Yeah, they should kena saman! lol…

  8. There are a lot of overzealous people in the world. I just read an article that quoted something equating swimsuit calenders with prostitution. If she thinks that’s bad, I wonder what she’ll say about twincest?

  9. Darn, I’ve never even heard of Kosmos… But then, that’s probably a good thing. Kena saman tak cukup. Patut kena tutup.
