I can’t remember the last time anyone assembling a harem as fearsome as Hakuoro’s. So, naturally, it’s power rankin’ time.
(Everytime they say, “Rak Shrine,” I swear I hear, “Lacus Clyne.” Maybe I’m just hoping for a “Rak Shrine no tame ni!” and three DOM suits popping out of nowhere.)
I am also tossing in the male members of Hakuoro’s court, just because I don’t think the gender of the twins has been resolved, and also Oboro’s crush on Hakuoro is mildly disturbing. Taking a cue from the latest Meido Power Rankings™, Hakuoro’s harem is graded on (1) moe (2) usefulness, and (3) combat abilities. S is the best, F is the worst, so a grade of (C, B, A) would be C for moe, B for usefulness, and A for combat abilities. The grades are also curved with respect to Utawarerumono. While a guide, grades are not the basis used for ranking. Remember, this is a power ranking… so rank corresponds to position in personal preference and will change as the plot progresses.

Picking the first spot was a toss up as I oscillate between the two, but then Meido Touka put it over the edge. I’m even using it as my current wallpaper. Elegant, cute, and skilled enough that Hakuoro wants her on his Shikeripetim assault squad. She could be his Invincible Chambermaid… if she really were a meido. Frankly, there’s still time for this development.
Who doesn’t like carefree, melonpanriffic drunk girls who swing around oversized novelty swords? Love the way how they show limbs being tossed in the sky everytime she fights. Also loved how Hakuruo knows that Karura and Touka gives him the best chance of winning, and that’s why they’re one and two on the ranking.
(Of course, if this was an Utawarerumono Bust Size Power Ranking™, yes, she would be first.)
The cutest of the bunch, and her combat score is helped by Mukuru. If I were an Emperor, I’d field a whole frickin’ army of Mi… Mukuru’s… even Benawi retreated from his first encounter with the tiger. Even though she’s young, she seems to have that “children’s wisdom” where she can succinctly say what the adults are thinking but not saying.
Wet blanket-class girlfriend… sister… daughter-thingie for Hakuoro. I like how she gets huffy everytime Hakuoro explains his affections for her as being “family.” Useful as a physician and as a ballast for Hakuoro, she’s definitely the only other calming influence beyond Benawi. She could also be like Pacifica and end the world with that some to-be-revealed special power for all I know. She’s lower than Aruru because of her wet blanket nature.
I’d love to have two support archers following me around raining pain on my enemies. So did Aquaplus pull a Kyoto Animation (the greatest novel-to-anime improvement ever) and change the male twins to female twins? Or is it one of those things we’ll never know the answer to, like how many licks does it take to get the candy middle of a Tootsie Pop™?
Every harem needs a Samurai Leader, hence why Hakuoro was smart enough to spare their lives. Benawi has tons of combat experience and just doesn’t seem to lose… stalemate, yes, but not outright lose. Kurou seems like a good Riker to Benawi’s Picard. Though if Kurou starts kitting on Karura, I’d have him hanged.
I have no idea why she’s in the anime. Besides playing with Aruru and Yuzuha, what does she bring to the table, exactly?
I can only imagine Aquaplus as they’re designing the game… “Mmmm… we need more breasts in the game… oh! Girls with wings are hawt!” and tossing in Kamyu and Urutorii. Neither has done much, and their figures look really unnatural… reminds me of Eiken.. bad times… bad times…
I’m not a fan of sickly characters. I’d rather have my Yoriko over Misaki any day. Maybe it’s the Suigintou-Megu factor working for some people but just not me. But I gotta love how Oboro was so focused on her in the first third or so of the anime, yet nowadays, Oboro seems to have ditched her to spend time with Hakuoro.
Whenever he’s on screen calling Hakuoro “aniki,” I get some major yaoi vibes. Bad times. He also pretty much gets his ass handed to him by everyone else (I’ve only remember him pwning fodder soldiers), and I think his archer twin are ten times more useful than he is. What exactly is he good for besides saying, “Aniki! Attack! Attack! Attack!”?

Hakuoro’s harem is indeed fearsome, but I’m not sure I’d place it above the venerable Tenchi Harem. Super-science, magic, space cops, ghost space battleships… maybe you should do a power ranking of all harems, eh?
Personally I’d give Touka a higher moe rating. She certainly deserves to be above Kamyu.

That thing about Oboru cracked me up, poor guy. Why the first “enemy” introduced is always the weakest down the line after they join you?
Guess by the time you get Touka in the game she is incredibly awesome.

Problem is that the rules are different. There’s no spaceships (yet) in Utawarerumono, so of course a spaceship is going to pwn someone with a sword. The correct comparison would be “strength index with respect to others in the same anime.” For example, Touka is pretty much the best swordswoman in Utawarerumono’s universe. Is Washi the best genius in the Tenchi universe? That’s the comparison, not if Washi can beat the crap out of Touka.
I sort of suspect you’re underrating Urutorii’s power. Sure, she’s sort of a pacifist now but then that monster from the end of the OP will show up and she’ll let loose.
It’s really funny how kind of useless Oboro has been in the anime since he’s the unabashed badass of doom in the game. Touka lags behind him a little bit in the later stretch, but she joins the party with her special attacks completely powered up, so while she doesn’t hit hard for awhile, she does have her special attack a good 10 battles or so before Oboro. Urutorii and (hopefully vampire) Kamyu will come into the limelight a little later (though it bears saying that both have joined the party on the battlefield at this point in the game), but as far as combat abilities go, they’re pretty damn worthless because magic is only marginally stronger than physical attacks and they’re both slow as fuck.
Expect Aruru to also climb (or perhaps fall) a little as that little rat thing at the start of the OP likes to shoot lightning around, so her menagerie isn’t even complete yet. :-p
And next episode has yet another haremite in the form of an undersexed empress who manages to get Hakuoro to accidently promise to sleep with her when he visits her country.
Of course, the high point of his harem (at least in the game) is when he takes all the females and goes on a trip to Karura’s country. Just him and all six of his ladies. Best elite fighting force ever.

It’s also nice that they rewrote Touka’s character quite a bit (at least thus far) for the anime. She was kind of an idiot savant swordfighter in the game. In the bridge scene in the game, she was actually the one that accidently cut it down from flourishing her sword when drawing it.

I wasn’t really talking about combat ability so much as the overall memorability of the harem.
But I agree, give Touka teleportation and a beam saber and she’d rip any of the Tenchi Muyo cast a new one. Better yet, give Touka Signum’s Levantine…

Only things that sit still for very long periods of time and that nobody else is attacking though. Even Kurou tends to get two moves to every one of Kamyu’s… and Urutorii’s not that much better. So freakin’ slow and worthless.

Mmmmm… tough one. I don’t even know where to begin. Oh, screw it, Haruhi, Yuki, and Mikuru in the top spot. Hopefully Kyon can convince LOL FANG-TAN to complete the pentfecta.

I’m pretty sure it’ll be the next ‘major’ arc though since it did occur between Orikakan’s death and the end of the Niwe arc. It really had nothing to do with the main plot though, was only 3 battles long (one of which was against monkies) and the only major outcome was Hakuoro… uh… sealing himself… as Karura’s master, but the two major characters in the arc are both in the OP, so I imagine they’ll give it at least a couple eps before getting to the Kuuya and Dii arcs.
I’m a bit peeved with all the game players who are jumping the gun screaming how they are drastically changed xyz and abc
only to learn that oh wait, they did include xyz and abc, they just used another paralel to describe it / shuffled events around

Is Eruru the only one that does anything with her ears? That alone makes up for her wet blanket status. Well, almost. I’m not sure why Touka is #1, though. She just doesn’t show enough skin. What’s with the clothes? Not even tight in some places.
It’s funny that you noticed Benawi never loses, though. He and Kurou are like friggin’ Energizer Bunnies. Benawi also defeats Hakuoro a couple times. Why in the world do they not field Mukuru, though? Until the enemy figures out this whole “water kills” thing, he’d be taking out half the friggin’ Shikeripetim army.

That’s true. Although I did play it through, I realized in the end that it’s better to just watch and enjoy. The universe isn’t going to END just because (insert event here) either didn’t appear or got changed.

And lastly, Touka wins. Yes indeed. I can’t put my finger exactly on why, though. It’s an instinctive thing, I guess.

Touka wins, because she wears a trenchcoat( and looks good in it), she has excellent swordsmanship( with no absurd showing off( she follows the policy of not wasting each stroke)), she does not rely on her sexuality to become popular, she is mature( and still cute to boot), etc…

I would have voted for Mukuru if the choice was available.
I haven’t played the game, but I have played the MINIgame, and… Oboro kicks 10X more ass in the minigame than the anime. I would even rank him above Touka (in the minigame) (though Touka is pretty hawt too). He’s faster than GOD and that double jump of his makes him annihilate archers and winged spellcasters.
Urutori and Kamyu’s magic is… OK, but it’s hard to get it at full power before a zillion enemies rush you. I think they would be better in 2player mode.
Oh, about the twins, i have only same the anime and there was never a doubt in my mind they were females before you mentioned they were originally male. However, they are certanly female in the anime because:
A. Female Clothing, no male character wears armor like that, and its clearly feminine
B. Behaviour, eg. crying, worrying, cowering when outmatched (like when Oboro came to rescue them after Gura got stabbed in the shoulder).
C. The Tail, in the show males or most males hide their tails under their cloths except some rarities, and on those occasions they were shorter then female tails. However the twins have full, unhidden tails.

I’m probably the only reader in this blog who thinks that Karura is the most awesome character ever. Even though Touka is superior and Aruru is omega kawaii (and has Mukuru the Feline Juggernaut), Karura in action is pure bliss to watch.
it was probably mentioned earlier and i cant remember, but just in case it wasnt, the twins are girls, and oboro is quite lucky since he got drunk and slept with both of em.
More like people are hoping that the twins are girls. :) I won’t say that they’re definitely male, since I’m hoping for a transgenderisation as well, but until it is explicitly stated in the anime itself, the gender of the twins is still very much up for speculation.

Anyone have any background information on Witsarnemitea? She alludes to her contract with Witsarnemitea when she offers herself to Hakuoro, and I’m dying to know what that means.
Wita~ is a God occasionally mentioned throughout the series. Wita~ is worshipped by the majority, but if you listen to Kyuuya’s dialogue with Hakuoro, her people do not acknowledge Wita~ as the ruling God.
