higurashi no naku koro ni 16 discussion

Hey, you forgot to mention that Shion wasn’t wearing a bra when she was drying herself off – syork

Why I never noticed!

Before we begin, check out the Higurashi oekaki project. Some really creative art.

Those uninterrupted screenshots gave me a killer business idea. All I need is a couple of seiyuu’s and a 1800 number. I’m gonna be rich! – waista

Don’t you mean an 1-900 number… ?

Translation of review:

I wish this show was Shuffle! – Modern Day Miracle Fly

>> I wish this show was Muteki Kanban Musume!

Fixed.

This show is beyond saving now. I was just treated to 23 minutes of sonozaki action and i was bored out of my mind. Im gonna go download the manga and pray it is as good as Shion’s boarding school outfit. (Although i will continue to watch the anime for Shion/Mion despite how bad it is) – Kalm

The manga rocks, especially the 4koma. As Utawarerumono is currently showing, an anime doesn’t need to follow its source material exactly to be successful. Good execution, intelligent pacing, and a bit of wit goes a long way. Higurashi does not execute well. Even though there’s explaination sequences in Utawarerumono, they do not feel anywhere as boring as the epic Mamouro x Ooishi conversations. Higurashi really needs to take a page from Stand Alone Complex and learn how to devote entire episodes to recap and explainations without putting the audience to sleep. Yoko Kanno music probably helps.

Though now I’m starting to wonder if maybe Shion is unbalanced enough that she’s behind Satoshi and his aunt’s disappearance as well. – rooboy666

I think all the characters in this anime series are unbalanced. At some point, I can imagine Excel and Hyatt watching this series going, “Wow, those ladies have issues.”

First, we see that Shion was in fact the one that went insane at the end of Watanagashi-hen. – Symmetry

I guess then why did the person who was extracted from the cave say that she was Shion to both the police and K1 afterwards? Ooishi even identifies her as Shion. Then she goes back to Shion’s apartment and gets tossed out of there… why would Mion try so hard to pretend that she was Shion to the point that she would lie to the police and live where Shion was living? (This assumes that Mion had a way of entering Shion’s place as well.) What advantage would it give her than if she just said, “Wait, I’m Mion!”

I do believe that the two Sonozaki sisters switch places quite a bit, but with how the anime approaches things, it’s a crapshoot. For all I know, it could be production mistakes. The only way to tell is from any star-shaped birthmarks on their… wait, what? You’re telling me…

We need a Haruhi Fujioka in the show to help us tell the twins apart. – Mei

Awesome comment. Maybe we should hire Ootori to tell us the gender of Utawarerumono‘s archers while we’re at it. (And, as I keep bringing up, the twins for Day by Day were originally male. Kyoto Animation seized the moment and made them truly special for TSR anime. Who says that they can’t do the same thing with Dori and Gura?)

Now, 16 episodes in, I have to ask myself why am I still watching this show. Obviously, the first theory at what this story is, is out. The second option is still up for grabs, though with how the show is progressing, the possibility of the show being the second theory is extremely low, let along the show executing the second theory successfully. Nothing is making any sense at all, the information being presented is something the viewer already knows or can guess easily, or if the information is new, it has nothing to do with anything. – Beowulf

As many astute people have pointed out, the only things keeping me watching are (1) Mion and Shion (2) Emo Rena, who gets deprecated because she’s no longer Queen Emo with Miki around and (3) how they end this train wreck. That’s pretty much the same reasons I stuck with Mai Otome… (1) Natsuki and Shizuru (2) Emo Tomoe and (3) if Nina and Mr Wong will violate a few moral sensibilities.

(Maybe if Rena has kawaiigasms like she does in the manga, the series can be salvaged. I probably should make a “how would I fix this mess” post sometime… *sigh*… I’ll toss it onto my “to do” pile along with “top ten ponytails,” “uta kata 1,” and “everything macross.”)

And I agree with Jason here: we need some matchups between the killer loli’s. How about turning the plot into one where Oyashiro-sama has become sick of the recurring Watanagashi-festival, and is thus insinuating the killer loli’s to kill each other so that the last-standing killer loli will become his bride to start humanity all over again? – justanothergirl

Okay, step one for my anime extreme makeover: all the killer lolis will be tossed into a Mai Hime-like competition. They’ll all get summons too… Rika gets a gopher/mole thingie, Satoko gets a fire-breathing lizard, Shion and Mion get Bahamut, and Rena gets a commoner from 2006 Japan carrying around an iBook. Done.

I liked this show very much, but it’s going in wrong direction. It still shots, only in wrong goal. – dopelfish^

Spoilers! Keroro episode 42…

Loved the top image; most of the hands in the right places. – Nemo_N

Every single magazine article or spread that I’ve seen for Higurashi promotes the kawaii, harem, or emo facial distortion aspect fo the show. Not a one says, “Hey, we have a semi-complete mystery spanning six reboots!” Then again, I only read Megami and Newtype.

(I went to SJ’s Obon festival, and they had a stand selling Megami, so I picked up the recent issue… and the lady who was selling it told me that this issue was selling like hotcakes. I opened it up, and it had the epic Mikuru-run poster.)

1 I see a relation between the ammount of melonpan and the size of your posts.

2 I’m glad satoshi doesn’t say much, he has an really annoying voice, like “turn the volume down” annoying. – SH

On the first point, the reigning champion of screenshots is still Mai Otome 25-26, which featured over 105 screenshots (50+ an episode). I take as many screenshots as I have sarcastic comments. Somedays, I’m Kyon. Other days, I’m Maebara.

On the second point, Satoshi sounds like Aya Hirano compared to a certain other character nya.

Speaking of which, a few comments about my proposed Mikuru-LOL FANG-TAN-Yuki hybrid:

Whoa, whoa, whoa. The Great Hope is a Mikuru-Tsuruya-Yuki-ASAKURA hybrid. – extraclassiclite

I don’t trust girls from Canada. Not a one.

I don’t think it’s possible for three girls to successfully breed, but I sure as hell would like to see them try. – Baka-Kun

I said “hybrid” not offspring. (And, if there were a videotape to feature such a thing, I’d bid upwards of $1k on eBay for it.)

Dude, better living through science! It’s amazing what geneticists can do these days. (As Dr. Irie well knows, I wager) – teki

Welcome… to the island of Dr. Moreau!

I’ll assume that you got these references from wikipedia and were not involved with the watching of these shows… – Kalm

I’m sorry, 90210 is one of the great comedies of my generation. Once in a lifetime cast: Ian Ziering, Tori Spelling, Brian Austin Green, Gabe Cartersis, Joe Tata… if only The Hoff and Shatman were involved, it would have been the greatest unintentional comedy ever for all eternity. (Though I stopped watching after Dylan came back… I’m convinced that he’s the prototype for Mwu La Fraga.)

Curious, I wonder if the Mikuru and Fang-tan cos-play is worth catching up for. As for the San Jose heat wave the So-Cal one is decidedly worse, and I have to stay in a green house of a class room. – Crusader

Right now of all the shows that are still airing…

1. Utawarerumono. Kicked up a notch since they decided to bump up the animation quality. This is what good series do… fix their damn flaws… the animation for the beginning of Uta was, uh, passable at best. Now? Much, much better. And the mystery of the twin’s gender has been more compelling than Higurashi… yesterday, I counted at least seven threads about the archer twins on /a/ and only two threads debating about the Sonozaki twins.

2. Inukami. Keita getting married was hilarious… for all the wrong reasons.

3. Keroro. No explaination necessary.

4. Muteki Kanban Musume. The new king of emo facial contortions ~nya.

5. Ouran. Loved the episode that revealed who Tamaki’s father is.

I was laughing like hell at the beat-up scene what reminded me of Super Smash Bros. game (seriously) and all that was missing was the Akira Yuki-like lines (from Virtua Fighter) shouted by Satoshi. Or Sol Badguy-like intrusion, of course with his “gurlfriend” (aka Gun Flame, from Gulity Gear game). – dopelfish^

    >I guess then why did the person who was extracted from the cave say that she was Shion to both the police and K1 afterwards?

The person who was extracted from the cave was definitly Mion. The we know that the dead body in the well (put there before the police came in) was definitly Mion since they could tell via the demon tattoo on the back. So what happens is that Shion tasers K1, kills Mion and dumps her body, and then pretends to be good innocent Shion when the police come in. Hence why the police never found Mion when they first came in. Hence why “Mion” could shank K1 despite being dead at the time.

  2. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was looking for that Mikuru Poster! Were do you get this things?!

Anyway, is good to know you’ll keep blogging about Higurashi, even if you don’t have any hope left for it.

  3. >Don’t you mean an 1-900 number… ?

    I think they’re 1-800 here, anyway, 1-900-SHION FTW.

  4. >On the second point, Satoshi sounds like Aya Hirano compared to a certain other character nya.

“On the second point, Satoshi sounds like Aya Hirano compared to english voice actors” Fixed :)

Am i the only one who loves his voice and how he adds nya to the end of his sentences?

  5. Thanks for the reccomendations I have already picked up Keroro, Ouran, and Kanban. As for Utawarerumono and Inukami I’ll add it to the list of stuff I am slowly bittorrenting off Wi-Fi coffeeshops. Activation has left me with a coffee addiction, yet another nickname, a mid-life crisis well before age 30, E-7 ridicule of my Haruhi wall paper, desertion of my treacherous friends with broadband, and an office space with broken plumbing and no means to do any work.

As for Canadian women, I suggest you reconsider. The way this country is going marrying one may be the only way to cross the border by 2008… :P

Suffice to say thank heavens for the anime blogosphere and the good news regarding Icon of our most Revered Lady.

  6. 2. Inukami. Keita getting married was hilarious… for all the wrong reasons.

Thanks for the spoiler, fansub is still at ep. 8 you know…not everyone sneaks a peek at animesuki

  7. I really do wish the anime was better, like the manga and sound novels. I’ve been fooling myself to love the anime all this time… I think. Because I haven’t been able to buy the infamous sound novels yet… but soon! soon I will!

Mion and Shion weird chibi fanart I drew and thought I’d show here. It’s bad, forgive me. And the handwriting, hidieous.

  8. After reading the manga I’m feeling really confused about when Mion and Shion were swapping places. I’m still pretty sure about what happened after Rika and Satoko die, but not before.

  9. >> Mion and Shion weird chibi fanart I drew and thought I’d show here. It’s bad, forgive me. And the handwriting, hidieous.

    Nice. I demand a larger version. o_O;;

    >> Thanks for the spoiler, fansub is still at ep. 8 you know…not everyone sneaks a peek at animesuki

I don’t read animesuki either. But it’s not a spoiler.

    >> Am i the only one who loves his voice and how he adds nya to the end of his sentences?

I think it’s hilarious, but it’s also grating. Still, it’s like ten times better than Gan-chan.

  10. >The manga rocks, especially the 4koma.
Ya, the 4koma did attract me to reading it. Then I continued reading Watanagashi-hen till the part when a hand suddenly appears by Keiichi`s bedside. Then the head appeared. Then I stopped reading. I never got to read those last pages of the second volume even till today. You should`ve said how much creepier the manga version is compared to the anime.
