Funniest Moments

Kankuro and the door. A tragedy in three acts.

image

The secret to Kankuro’s speed. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll light myself on fire now, thanks.

image

Miki’s “You have no right to critize my work ethic!” before her mom pipes in with, “Oh hell yeah; he does!”

image

Emo table wiping. Pantheon class.

People buying ramen for the non-emoness of it?!? Bizarro world. Anyway, last week, I went to my favorite ramen place in Mountain View, and they usually play pre-recorded segments of Japanese TV in the background… and, yep, I saw an ad for Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Of course, this was really old… it also had an ad for Narnia.

(Am I the only one thinking Sensei could become a top tier character if she, uh, didn’t wear that sweatsuit all the time? We gotta convince her to steal something out of Megumi’s closet.)

image

Megumi’s “Maybe I can exploit this pawn” face.

image

Move over hiten mitsurugi ryu, we have the unicycle + train style! Sadly this doesn’t make up for the fact that this was the first Muteki Kanban Musume episode, uh ever?, to not feature Emo Miki doing her MGM thing. Sad. *sniff*

image

Fleeing Megumi… new moe mode! The animation for the Megumi vs Miki vs Kankuro fight looked like it got punched up a notch… this is what good series do. You gotta give that extra gear for those extra special moments. The three of them hashing everything out like a dysfunctional family at Thanksgiving is just one of those extra special moments. Kudos.

image

Extra special. Miki’s the best.

image

Man, I was kinda bummed that Miki only stomach punched Megumi. Isn’t that like Haruhi barging into a room exclaiming, “I’ve got a great idea!” and it turns out to be just trying to invade Pekopon?

image

If there’s one thing that this episode highlights, it’s that Kankuro and Megumi are perfect for each other… if this were a harem show, Kankuro certainly fits the profile of loser male, and Megumi could be his ツンデレ. Of course, harem animes are dime a dozen… good emo anime? Priceless.

image

Was the outcome of the battle ever in doubt?

(By the end, I was expecting Miki to jump into the battle royale, and when she did, I was still giggling. Then at the very end, well, you know what happens if you’ve been following our invincible poster girl.)

  1. HELL yeah!!
Miki’s mon for President! Watch your back Bush…

    >> Emo table wiping. Pantheon class.
    Better than HIgurashi…

  2. Megumi was weirdly really cute this ep, still not as great as sensei though, the HOHOHO laugh is just annoying.
And even when a few people get the crap beaten out of them we are thinking in pairings?

  3. Sadly, Kankuro and Megumi do make a good couple…*sigh*

You didn’t mention Muay Thai Miki; I almost fell from my chair with that one.

BTW, the guys fansubing this, KissSub, are running a poll in their forum, and Megumi is tied to Kankuro…*sigh^2*

  4. I like how Megumi gets carried along by Kankuro’s fighting ‘logic.’

  5. aw, you missed the scene where Miki was doing the pre-fight dance that the Thai boxing villain from Master of the Flying Guillotine did before he threw down.

although, i may be the only one here who has seen that flick…

  6. I was a bit disappointed… the title of the episode was misleading, and I expected more Kankuro vs Megumi… a fight whose outcome would at least be somewhat in doubt.

And is the ramen place you mentioned Ryowa? If so, that’s pretty funny, since I’ve seen Haruhi ads there too.

  7. I have to second the “extraclassiclite” about “What he’s saying is really messed up, but somehow convincing in the same time”. Plus, the moment when Kankuro lampoons “we might’ve been friends” pattern was priceless. Where did I see it just recently? Well, Haku died soon thereafter, and Megumi didn’t.

Where in hell is Hell’s Bunny though?

This is a filler episode, but it probably is the best so far, humor-wise. In the 9 previous ones, I often felt that jokes fell flat. Not in the 10. And, I noticed a strange development: Miki suddenly became conscious of Kankuro’s challenges, and her mom made the same leap too. Before, the whole business was played as if the challenges didn’t exist in this universe.

  8. Ryowa is alright… I live right above the one in berkeley, but I never noticed they play pre-recorded Japanese tv there, let alone Haruhi ad… They do have some really outdated manga on a shelf… Are they even owned by Japanese?

  9. Question… what exactly do you mean by “emo”? You use that phrase quite often in your blog…

  10. >> And is the ramen place you mentioned Ryowa? If so, that’s pretty funny, since I’ve seen Haruhi ads there too.

Yes, Ryowa. There’s like three ramen places in Mtn View now, but Ryowa is my favorite.

    >> They do have some really outdated manga on a shelf… Are they even owned by Japanese?

Never been to the Berkeley branch… they do play pre-recorded programming at the Mtn View store. Anime pops up from time-to-time. Yes, the manga is horrificially old.

    >> aw, you missed the scene where Miki was doing the pre-fight dance that the Thai boxing villain from Master of the Flying Guillotine did before he threw down.

    My bad!

    >> Question… what exactly do you mean by “emo”? You use that phrase quite often in your blog…

Emotional. From Wikipedia: “The term “emo” has also been used in recent years on the Internet as a form of insult, especially toward those who appear emotionally unstable.”

    >> And even when a few people get the crap beaten out of them we are thinking in pairings?

    Love is in the air!

    >> This is a filler episode

They’re all filler episodes. There’s absolutely zero plot or character development (short of Kankuro and Megumi getting involved in a Jessie Spano-AC Slater class of relationship) in this series. Maybe that’s why I enjoy it. It does humor, and it does it well.

  11. Oh, but I love Megumi… and for that matter, Sensei, since she’s actually attractive, especially in ‘Ooh, ramen!’ mode. I suspect the other reason people think she’s a spectre is because she NEVER changes clothes. Ever.

How does “Hell’s Bunny Sensei with Ramen” strike y’all?

  12. This screenshot looks so wrong.

  13. Funniest moment of the episode for me,

    “It’s still warm!”

A bit disappointed that they did not conclude the match between Megumi and Nya-san. Lots of screentime with Megumi though, so that is a plus.

    Cheers.

  14. Don’t forget smiling Sensei. Miki’s mom ought to bring Kankuro in full-time, if only to make sure that we get some fight action AND they get some decent cooking even if Miki’s mom gets busy with a few other things.

  15. Kannazuki Megumi is definately one of my favorite anime characters of all time. Her seiyuu does such an amazing job; its hard to believe she is the same person who voices Tenma.

  16. @Kalm:

You’re saying that like it’s a bad thing.

    Also, Sensei is love.

  17. >>Kannazuki Megumi is definately one of my favorite anime characters of all time. Her seiyuu does such an amazing job; its hard to believe she is the same person who voices Tenma.

You should watch School Rumble 2 episode 23 where she does the Megumi voice. o/ HO-HO-HO-HOOO

    “It’s still warm!”

Is it just me, or is Wakana-chan’s mom a total MILF?

On an unrelated note, if Miki had any intelligence at all, she’d convince her mom to let Kankuro work every day. She could do deliveries, slacking off the same way she always does, Kankuro could work in the store, and she could fight him at the end of every day. He’d be happy since he’d get to train (read: get beat up) every day, she’d be happy since she could still do whatever she wants to do during the day and would get to beat Kankuro up every night, Makiko-sama would be happy since the shop would make a ton of business, even with Miki gone all day, and most importantly, Megumi-chan would be unhappy since she’d probably go out of business. It’s a win-win-win-win situation. Honestly, I’m surprised Makiko-sama or Akihito didn’t suggest it.

  19. i didnt mean it was a bad thing, i just meant they are completely different characters.

  20. quigon – because they don’t want Miki slacking off any more she does already, even if it’d increase the business at the restaurant a lot. Miki isn’t likely to think of it – she’s the type who responds only to brute force, and even her ‘subtle’ plans (like Ep 9’s “scare the hostess”) depend on force and strength of arms – flinging items one might be scared of at a person, rather than ambushing her with them as Megumi’s scorpion almost did earlier that ep. If she DID think of it, then she definitely wouldn’t be Miki; it’s too subtle for her to think through, and she’s more one for ‘now’ rather than ‘later’ in terms of plans – consequences aren’t a big deal for her, outside of ones she can easily see (Makiko getting mad, etc).

I honestly think of Wakana’s mom as a shorter-haired, non-brooding version of Sensei myself; she has the same bright-eyed, fresh-faced look we only see on Sensei when she’s eating ramen.

  21. By the way, anyone else love the confused look Toshiyuki gave Kankuro when he realized he wasn’t Miki? That whole ‘UH?” expression and docile sitting behavior was hilarious…. almost as much as the whole “Oh, it’s so fast! And the ramen’s still warm!” thing – although one must wonder WHY they keep ordering ramen from the Onimuras if it’s always cold and soggy…

  22. And man… the store’s CLEAN. Anyone else pick up on that when Akahito enters? You see it pan across the store, and the walls are utterly spotless, the tables are clear, and the floor is perfect.

  23. What I liked about the Toshiyuki scene is that it indirectly insults Nya-san. This is the dog that would fight even Akiko, but considers Nya-san such a non-threat that it could not even be bothered to waste its’ time on him.

The montage of Nya!-powered chores was also gut-bustingly funny, and I also liked how they did not recycle footage for the scenes of past Miki abuse on Nya-san.

    Cheers.

  24. >> What I liked about the Toshiyuki scene is that it indirectly insults Nya-san.

I could have sworn this was because Kankuro saved the girl from the truck a few episodes ago. Since then, Toshiyuki has been very nice towards Kankuro.

    jason says:

What the–? What kind of atmosphere is this? I don’t understand, but this is the kind of atmosphere I can’t handle. Is this…continuity?

I love how this show is totally, unapologetically episodic, yet manages to stay truer to its limited continuity (ie: Toshiyuki’s respect of Kankuro, Kankuro bringing out Akihito’s “Inner Star Ranger,” Sensei x Ramen) than a lot of are-heavy anime.

  26. >>>I could have sworn this was because Kankuro saved the girl from the truck a few episodes ago

I have to agree with Jason.

  27. quigonkenny says:
    …than a lot of are-heavy anime.

Umm…that should be “ARC-heavy”… Boku no baka!

  28. Oops. Jason’s right, I’m wrong. I interpreted the scene incorrectly.

Speaking of continuity, recall also that they referenced the ‘Train Imagery’ training and the Unicycle from the ‘Date’ episode.

  29. If we consider it established that the continuity exists, then the second half of Jason’s argument for “they are all filler episodes” disappears. The character development is lacking though.

  30. >>>(Am I the only one thinking Sensei could become a top tier character if she, uh, didn’t wear that sweatsuit all the time? We gotta convince her to steal something out of Megumi’s closet.)

Absolutely agreed. And yet this show still doesn’t need a beach or onsen episode as much as Higurashi does. Although if they had an onsen episode that somehow turned into a battle royale crossover with Keroro Gunsou and ended with a battle between Miki and Powered Natsumi (with appearances by Dynamite Mois-dono and Hell’s Bunny-sama), it’d beat out “Ballad of Fallen Angels” and FMA25 as the greatest single episode in Anime history.

  31. Jason… have you seen episode 11? The last line… I think someone over there likes you or something.

  32. “Just what I was thinking, you emo girl!” (nosa no motoka desu wa, emo girl!”- Megumi (ep11)

I’m surprised that Jason hasn’t blogged that episode yet, that line is just for him.

    -veryinky

  33. Yup. And Kiss-Kyuu pushed it through fast. I think someone liked the ep. ;)

  34. Well, one must admit – Sensei with ramen’s ALWAYS good… and this just made it cuter.
