So my current theory is that I can’t stop watching Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru because I fear copious amounts of yuri will break out, and I’d miss it.
(I tried for a week to find a decent HDTV raw for this episode. Failed.)
Usually when I go see a movie, I apply “the watch test” where I increment the notch on my watch each time I check the time. Generally, most movies score one or two looks– good movies that keep me interested score zero looks. Crapfests like Blair Witch Project generally have me staring at my watch more than the movie. For anime, I use a similar system– if I watch an episode without checking the time, it’s fantastic. If it check it once or twice, very good. If I get off the sofa to make myself a sandwich, not so good. If I start going through my e-mail, Happiness-level bad. If I start going through my work e-mail, welcome to Koi Koi 7-level of anime hell.
Why I do bring this complicated system up? I expected to check the clock a few times during this episode of Otome wa Boku. Even polished up the clock in the living room. But, guess what? I didn’t glance at it at all. There’s just something about Otome wa Boku— while it doesn’t use Kanon-style animation pyrotechnics to impress (honestly, I enjoyed the original Kanon— at no point did I think, “Hey, all it needed is less Jay Leno, and it’ll be the greatest anime ever– in fact, I was thinking, “They need to kill off Makoto and put Nayuki and Akiko in matching nekomimi meido outfits, and then it’ll be the greatest anime ever”), Otome wa Boku does use great pacing, genuine moments, and the occasional yuri fanservice scene to keep pace.
Anyway, Otome wa Boku 2 continues Mizuho’s adventures in wonderland, and he even makes a friend. I couldn’t be happier for Mizuho– Shion’s fantastic. Honestly, has there been an non-entertaining Shion in anime? I’m also dropjawed from seeing how everyone in the school is absolutely ga-ga over Mizuho to the point where she’s already passed Shizuru-status around campus. I absolutely want Mizuho now to win that silly “Oneesama” contest just because what would it say about the school if the most womanly woman at the school was really a man?

UP Shion… she reminds me of Ryoko Asakura. That’s a good thing; I’m a fan of that type of subtle flirty yet secretly sinister archetype. I love the juxtaposition of her prim and proper side with her naughtier and fun-seeking side. My three favorite scenes with here were:
You know what would make this scene even better? Remember the picnic scene in Armageddon where Ben Affleck takes that animal cracker and scales up Liv Tyler’s breasts? Yeah, something like that, just with either Shion’s or Mizuho’s melonpan involved.
The only way to improve this scene is to get some sticky, cake-like substance on Shion’s fingers and have her feed Mariya with it. I know it’s been done recently. I don’t care. You can never have too many screams of “Oneeeeee-sama!”
If you’re one of those people saying, “Mmmph, I’m not going to watch anime about a trap,” “I’d rather watch Red Garden,” or “It’s just too slow,” you have no clue what you’re missing: Shion cooing “Wow, they feel like the real thing! So soft and warm! This is so much fun, it might even be habit forming!” as she fondles Mizuho. You’re not getting such moments out of Kanon. In fact, I’ll rank such payoff moments higher than seeing Ayu spin around trying to see her own wings while going “Uguu~”. My y-chromosome demands it. And if you really want “Uguu~,” you’ll get it in Otome wa Boku… more on this later in this post.
(This scene was where I expected some h-swerve, but it never happened. Sigh.)
UP Mariya… she is a fanservice godsend this season. If it weren’t for Mariya, I’d be catatonic from the lack of fanservice and meido this season. If stuff like Tokimeki Memorial is a barbiturate for my fanservice senses, Mariya is a Balco-class steroid. Unlike Shion, Mariya is more open about her willingness to have fun and being sinister. Even though she is Mizuho’s childhood friend, she has no problem trying her damnest to turn Mizuho on. I’m rooting for Mariya to dress Mizuho up as a meido next.
UP Mizuho… a terrified Mizuho is fine too. I liked this scene where Shion tells Mizuho, “Your fly is open.” Shion’s the best. I haven’t been this giddy since I noticed more and more people using Narg’s “omnidirectional docking” meme.
DOWN Judgement… I don’t care anymore. Just shoot me. No way there’s a penis on this. None. I won’t accept it. My judgement is out the window along with Mizuho’s manliness.
(Though I enjoyed the “Mmm… I wonder what real breasts feel like” thinking. Traps are only disturbing if they attach to other men, like in Happiness. Here, it’s all women, so it’s okay. Wait, didn’t I just give my judgement a down…)
DOWN Conflict… what? Conflict? Distracts from possible yuri moments. I was rooting for Class President to tumble down the stairs and plow into Mariya and Mizuho. There’s some series that could desperately use a plot *cough* Bartender *cough*– Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru is not one of them. Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito-inspired rule of thumb: plot is normally good except when it takes away from time spent on yuri. Would you rather have some silly, token cattiness between Class President and Mariya or would you rather have a Mariya, Mizuho, and Shion slumber party? Thought so.
DOWN The WNBA… we got next! After School Rumble‘s ridiculous 300 combined point game, I thought nothing could top it until Mizuho’s “dunk.” Is basketball played on 8 foot hoops in Japan? And roses? WTF? This is more ridiculous than the WNBA All-Star game. Though I think it would have been awesome if Kana flew in with her ears and rejected the attempt like what Ben Wallace did to Shaq during the ECF last year.
UP “Oneesama”… I’m thinking of rewatching Maria-sama ga Miteru. You can never have too many “Oneesama!” screams in anime. My top “Oneeeeeeeesama!” moment that needs to happen has to be Mikuru calling Haruhi that someday with Yuki reading a book in the background. If I ever get hired as a creative consultant for Kyoto Animation, I’d try to push that through as a pay-per-view OVA.
UP Erasers…
… because it make Horie Yui pull off the “Uguu~” for Mizuho. Fanservice plus “Uguu~”– best of both worlds. Now if only Feel has a budget as high as Kyoto’s…
UP SD… SD yuri is still yuri, right? SD yuri with a trap is still yuri, right?
UP Style… the standard outfit for Otome wa Boku is the full length white dress. It’s elegant and cute (and, of course, how it hugs everyone’s figure). Still, it’s a prim and proper looking full length dress that juxtapose well with when the girls go into fanservice mode. It’s a nice contrast– like seeing a 98mph fastball after a 79mph changeup.
(Frilly fits Mariya pretty well, and I definitely would expect Ryoko Asakura to wear some sort of solid satin… what am I typing?)

Different poisons for everyone, I guess. Personally speaking, I am entertained more by Happiness than OtomeBoku( to the point where I have decided to drop OtomeBoku from my watchlist( unless something happens in the future to make me change my mind)).
For me, yuri is not a selling point. I did watch SPanic, but that was because I was entertained by the psychotic girls. Psycho girls turn me on much more than yuri ever will. One of the reasons why I am enjoying Tokimeki Memorial too. Everybody there is batshit insane. Including the Bread-Lady.
I find Bartender soothing to watch too, but then again, I have always had enjoy slice-of-life shows.

I have seen some 8 foot hoops in Junior High schools in korea, so it is definitely possible that this gym class was using one of those, since this is in a girl’s high, or it might be a fancy adjustable height goal which they lowered to make it easy on the ladies.

I have seen the next episode and Shion has been exploring other Moe brands as well. If she keeps this up, she has a shot, albeit an long one though, of inventing a new meme; omni-moe, or O-Moe for short.

Well, I only gave Happiness a try because of the trap, but the show is just not worth it. I actually fell asleep watching the first episode…
…but maybe being 3:30am had some influence on my judgement :S. Still, I’d rather watch Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge instead of Happiness. As for OtoBoku, it’s only second to Kanon on my watchlist. It’s just that good.

I second the motion to use this every review; it helps me cope with the fact I am enjoying Mizuho’s, er, portrayal.

The only tragedy I’m finding here from the fanbase that allows the removal of hentai material in order to be shown to a wider audience. Mizuho’s dick would’ve been inside Mariya within the first episode. -_-#

Maybe Happiness could be greatly improved if Jun’s name ws changed to Shion and Haruhi became an über-powerful magical tsundere. Then we’d probably have a winner.
As for Otome wa Boku, I think everything I could possibly say has already been said. On a side note, I’m looking forward to a Five-way Slumber Party Yuri Frenzy, hopefully Mariya+alcohol-induced.

This reminds me of the True Story of Ah Q, and I suspect you know exactly why your judgement gets a negative. Still say that long enough and people will believe it. Though I am having quite the opposite experience. I accepted Mizuho as a guy despite the girlish mannerisms, but since I embraced the truth I find myself having the recurring suspicion that Mizuho isn’t the only guy.
Nevertheless I did not make it the WNBA connection while I was laughing, connected it with able bodied male winning the special olympics…

Still I kept Happiness on my watch list and since Shion is here this one is a keeper. I don’t give a hoot about traps illiciting male attention. I like the sneakiness and decpetion Shion and Jun can pull off.

What’s was with the ‘your fly is open’ thing anyway. What century is this where girls never wear pants? Your definitely right Jason, bad plot points detract from yuri goodness.

It doesn’t make sense because checking for your fly when you’re wearing a skirt is not evidence of being male in a universe where women ALSO wear pants. It’s evidence of being air headed and forgetting what you’re wearing. It’s no different than if Shion said ‘your shoes are untied’ and Mizuho looked down to see he was wearing indoor, slip-on shoes.
A fly is not (even close to) an exclusively male trait. Therefore an accidental response indicating that a person usually has the trait does not make that person male.
In layman’s terms:
Women can wear pants and have their flys open too.
ahhh, but weren’t they talking in the restroom? Beside, she already suspected Mizuho to not be female at that point, so she must have seen something when she saw Mizuho running the first time.

Was I the only one wondering what color Mizuho’s underwear is during the changing room scene? Chances are good it’s frilly since Mariya probably bought it, but inquiring minds want to know; yellow or pink?
I’d be realistic and say tighty whities at worst, matching ones with naturally stuffed bra at best.
