haruhi announcement on 12/22

AoD has sold out. Well, at least even more than before. Notice all the “s’s” and “o’s” are red? Click one. A quick traceroute and whois revealed nothing interesting. A quick look at the HTML reveals:

< !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

This line matches the DOCTYPE declaration for Funimation.com whereas ADVFilms.com uses a different DOCTYPE assertion. Random speculation is fun… i love bees…

  1. But I’m too poor to buy SHnY DVDs right now!

  2. They are not red at all. They are blue. What are you smoking?

  3. Is Funimation as bad as I hear? How bad? As in better buy the import DVD’s?

Man, I hope for the best; Haruhi deserves better.

  4. I’ve got red also. Perhaps your browser is coloring the links differently?

  5. @Nemo_N – No, Funimation isn’t as bad as you hear. Most complainers are most likely still stuck up in the company’s DBZ days.

  6. The doctype really doesn’t say much, but it’s a better clue than nothing. It’s really very, very standard, though.

They’ve gone with Hurricane Electric for their hosting. A company with no face, but loads of bandwidth.

If you look at the bottom of the source, though, you see some garbage in a code comment. Excitement swept over me as I went to figuring out what it said. I saved the HTML locally, uncommented the garbage, changed the character-set declaration to shift_jis (stupid MS crap encoding…), and suddenly the garbage became clear Japanese:
    禁則事項は12月22日に公表します。

Blah. That was no help at all.

Well, yes and no. They licensed Fullmetal Alchemist, and it turned out to be one of the best American releases I’ve seen in my entire anime experience. A little shy on extras, but the production value was impressive and voice acting was spot-on (well, as spot-on as english dubbing ever gets). Also, they didn’t “re-version” anything, as far as I could tell, and their use of subtitles and choice of using different angles for the OP and ED titles to preserve the original Japanese titles (if you want them) are both above many other licensors. Also, while they have historically used primarily in-house voice acting (not counting the fact that they apparently have access to ADV’s entire voice group), which usually limits the range of talent and ability to correctly cast actors for the right roles, they have recently shown a willingness to pull in big names from outside their normal stable for more memorable roles (Scott McNeil and Jonny Yong Bosch for FMA; Mary Elizabeth McGlynn for Trinity Blood).

Then there’s the Dragon Ball franchise…

Let’s just pray that if FUNimation does get the Haruhi license, they bring their A-game, realize how much money they can make off of this franchise, and decide to spend a little to make a little more.

  8. Chances are that it’s Kadokawa. They’re probably collaborating with Funi (and maybe ADV?) again, like they’ve been doing for FMP: TSR.

  9. All those red ‘s’s and ‘o’s are warping my eyes. xD

  10. this will be my first anime related purchase ever.

  11. Hmm…

    It seems odd that

    A) the company won’t make their name public in the registration
    B) It’s only been registered for one year, versus the three that most businesses usually do
    C) Funimation has pretty much adopted the .tv domain name strategy for their latest shows.

I’m thinking this is just a fan-site of some kind. A distributor would have no reason to keep things under the rug, and would be thinking long-term (not just a year). Plus, Doctype declarations can be copied and/or are determined by your editor.

    I guess we will see…

  12. Within a month have the anime-community experienced two hacks by a frog and now Haruhi-sama. It seems to good to be true.

  13. omfg-nyoro~

  14. Also…

    SOPILERS FOR BOOK 4

Dec. 21 afternoon is the time when Kyon comes back form the world without Haruhi Suzumiya. So, yep, at Dec. 22 the world as everybody knew it in that world ended :p

  15. I’m not getting my hopes up personally, I would rather be surprised than let down. However, from the looks of it, this is hosted at 1and1.com, meaning that if it is a corporate site, they’re going through great lengths to hide it for some reason. If I had to guess, its one of three things:

    1) Its a fan site, plain and simple.

    2) Its been put out by an American Anime distributor (i.e. Funimation or ADV) with the attempts of looking like a fan site in order to build hype.

    3) Its a result of someone within one of the companies finding out about the release or something pertaining to it and is trying to discretely get the word out.

Also, if it is a corporate site, the reason they would hide it? Simple. They see the underground following that Haruhi has. They know of its hype already. Prolonging it and making people anticipate it further ensures them buying the DVDs. Its an old marketing trick.

Granted this is all pure speculation, but I for one (as well as many others I can speak for) will be keeping a close eye on this.

  16. I’m as giddy as a schoolgirl right now.

  17. Hmmm. On the fence with this one.

  18. This is probably old news, but inspired by the digging around in page sources, I went back and took a look at http://www.haruhi.tv. The site’s currently displaying a 404, but view the page source in shift-JIS and there’s a comment tag at the bottom. The text inside translates to “Program starting condition – Gather the keys. Deadline – two days.” Those who’ve been keeping up with the novel translations might recognize that from “The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi” – is this going to be season 2?

  19. Yep, that’s Disappearance. Which means either:
    1. the big announcement is that season 2 is coming instead of R1 licensing. OR
    2. The big announcement is S2 is coming AND R1 is licensed.

Since the other site’s in english and AoDVD is involved in the campaign, I’m betting on #2. So the question is, who do we WANT to hear has it? My thought: I can’t abide Chris Patton trying to pull off Kyon. Itsuki, maybe, but I don’t think he’s got the slightly slimey “can I trust this guy” feel for it. Kyon, hell no.

  20. December 22nd is when the new Transformers Live-Action trailer comes out, come on peeps, its Transformers, not stupid Haruhi.

  21. Not to diss AnimeonDVD, Funimation, ADV, or Chris. But when it comes to JapanAnime and the companies refusal to invest in an English dub, some of the really important people over there are sure lacking in the Balls Department of Balls. >_

  22. It’s lame guerrilla marketing. I checked AoMM’s and blogsuki’s outbound logs, and I think 1/4th of the traffic (according to asosbrigade’s counter) came from either AoMM or blogsuki. The real number may be higher since visitors who click on the link through a RSS reader are not tracked. It would be hilarious if the bloggers funneled more traffic to it than AoD.

  23. Could be exactly what they’re aiming for! AoD would just be the leverage to get our attention…

  24. It’s also being advertised on ANN. Or will be. The banner should be up by now.

Fansites don’t spend big $$$ for advertising on news sites like that, and they wouldn’t collaborate in that kind of thing.

  25. I hadn’t realized the significance of the date at first, and the more I think about it, the more I think this may be tied into an official S2 announcement, since Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi is the obvious choice for the anchor of a second season (and likely season title). I especially think so considering the hidden message on haruhi.tv.

But, there could be something we aren’t considering. If these are references to DoSH, they may not necessarily be referring to a TV series. Recently, and most notably with the release of FMP: TSR, which, if one were to go simply by the company promos on the DVD, is FUNimation almost as an afterthought, Kadokawa has started to gain a foothold on this side of the Pacific. Also, the graphic on the asosbrigade.com site isn’t quite flashy enough to fit your average anime licensor. In fact, as has been noted, it’s quite subtle. How cool would it be if this were an announcement for an official english translation of the novels?

Of course, that wouldn’t make a lot of sense by itself, especially since Anime on DVD is doing the lion’s share of the marketing, but it’s something to think about, and could be quite likely as a tie-in to an R1 release.

  26. Sometimes, it pays to be simple; instead of blaring all your horns and triggering the fireworks. ;)

    Cheers.

  27. Heh. It’s slightly amusing how, once I saw the banner ads for this on ANN, I rushed here to see if you had any coverage ;-P I’m kinda hoping for an english translation of the novels, since, well, I have seen the anime…
However, if it is a R1 license by Funimation, then I hope they put it on the Funimation Channel soon, as in at least a year from the release. I doubt they will, because that is not exactly a great money maker. The only outside advertising I’ve seen on there is Star Wars: Empire at War, some language learning CDs, and that one really wierd CG anime-ish show about garbage, a hobo, and a cat, which may not even be outside.

Just like in the alternative univers,e the only thing that seems to be up is Yuki’s page for the Literature Club….
I wonder what they will do when Kyon finds the key…

  29. This just in, Haruhi Suzumiya is now a recognized face all over the world thanks to this anti-Hamas girl and her “Stop Killing The Children” sign complete with a big portrait of our beloved Oharuhi.

  30. I think I found confirmation of the licensor:
If you cause the hit counter to have an error (eg. by adding extra forward-slashes to the end of the url: http://asosbrigade.com// the hit counter will have an interesting error message.

kadousa = kadokawa pictures USA, no?

  31. Try http://asosbrigade.com/destroy_universe/

If you have the guts, that is.

  32. sos-dan.com got changed over to asosbrigade plus they took out the doctype statement. sos-dan.com used to be a fansite with a large Haruhi imageboard.

  33. I’m fairly sure sos-dan.com/.org will be back soon enough, although the site admins have been rather quiet in IRC…

  34. What? The world’s ending? Where’s my data-manipulating stealth barrier and protective shield?

  35. Looks like Kadokawa with Bandai producing…
