It’s day 4… about the halfway point. Up on today’s schedule is AoMM’s Best Comedy Series of 2006. Best Comedy generally implies an unparalleled ability to make the watcher laugh. Since there is already a train wreck award, this award goes to the funniest intentional comedic series.
Best Edible Food Product Placement
Winner: Akiko’s Jam-mu, Kanon
We’re using “edible” loosely here. Like Utawarerumono‘s twin archer’s gender, we may never know the secret of Akiko’s jam-mu.
Runner Ups: Pizza Hut, Code Geass; Emo Ramen, Muteki Kanban Musume; Colonel Sanders, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Never in my life have I ever craved Pizza Hut and ramen as I did in 2006. I’m glad that Code Geass wasn’t sponsored by Pizza Hut sister franchise KFC instead… I think I would have had a heart attack from all the grease.
Best Engrish
Winner: Revy, Black Lagoon
Kinda funny how Revy is supposed to be speaking English all this time, yet she speaks the worst Engrish out of all the characters in 2006. (Though for a pantheon-class performance in Engrish, she doesn’t come close to You’re Under Arrest No Mercy.) I think they should have pulled a Nanoha to begin with– just hire an English speaker for Revy and subtitle her lines. Same with Dutch and Benny. At least that way the cast would nail the English lines (like what they’re supposed to) and fuck up the Japanese lines instead of the other way around. Black Lagoon is one of those rare series where I’m looking forward to the dub… I just hope Geneon doesn’t do something stupid.
Runner Ups: Archer, Fate/Stay Night; Aya Hirano; Entire Cast, Code Geass
Gratz to Aya Hirano for setting some sort of “# of fansubbers she has confused with her Engrish.” It’s actually kinda charming, and the misunderstood Engrish sometimes makes more sense than the correct Engrish. As for Code Geass, I’m tossing them in here just to be safe (and because of Pizza Hut). They’re supposed to be Britannians?!? Why the hell aren’t they speaking Engrish?!? If the Americans can force Japan to more widely adopt pronouns and katakana, I’m sure that Britannia can at least get the Elevens to start speaking in Britannianese.
The Ichigo Feast Memorial Anything Can Happen Wildcard of 2006
Winner: Sensei, Muteki Kanban Musume
Technically, Sensei is very predictable. She can be purchased with ramen. Yet, she always brings a welcome twist to that formula every time that she shows up… especially during the final episode where she basically sells off Miki for ramen.
Runner Ups: LOL FANG-TAN, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya; Talking Panties, Magikano; Orenge-sama, Ouran; C.C., Code Geass
Actually a tough choice. You can make a pretty good case for Orenge-sama’s unpredictability and cosplay, but Sensei was definitely the funniest and most-in character with her predictability. C.C. deserves at least an honorable mention because most of the time, Lulu was even surprised at what she’s doing… or maybe that’s just his incredulous, “I can’t believe she’s not scarfing down yet another pan pizza” face.
The Ignorance Is Bliss Award
Winner: Mizuho-oneesama, Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru
Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. Let’s keep it that way.
Runner Ups: Tamaki, Ouran Host Club; Hakuoro, Utawarerumono
Tamaki always seems to do better when he has no clue what’s going on. As for Emperor Hakuoro, I’d rather not know about those DVD specials. He’s plummeted from Ginko-class to Keitaro-class thanks to those.
Best Comedy Series of 2006
Winner: Muteki Kanban Musume
The genius of Muteki Kanban Musume cannot be fully understood until one has watched it and laughed up a lung. Most of the humors come from the characters, and, boy, do they deliver. Miki? Megumi? Nya? Sensei? Toshiyuki? They’re all one-of-a-kind.
Runner Ups: Magikano; Ouran; Welcome to the NHK; Inukami
The only reason Inukami‘s on this list is thanks to that damn robot, I couldn’t stop laughing nor could I stop having nightmares. Otherwise, it pales to Ouran, NHK, and Magikano. The sad thing is that I need to point out that if Gonzo actually stuck to NHK manga instead of jumping around and introducing plot that doesn’t happen in the manga (like Misaki inexplicably making it to “suicide” island), it probably would have won this category. Also, the FFXI references were okay for the manga but are now horribly dated; they should have rewritten it to feature WoW… and maybe even cross it with that South Park episode…
Wow… Haruhi didn’t win any awards in this category… why not toss up a “Best use of sarcasm” award just for the heck of it? Don’t come crawling back when you start getting those “didn’t give Haruhi an award” withdrawal syndromes! Long live the Principality of Haruhi!
>>>”Black Lagoon is one of those rare series where I’m looking forward to the dub… I just hope Geneon doesn’t do something stupid.”
I wholeheartedly agree. If they do it right (meaning spend a little money on the talent and script handling), Black Lagoon could have a Cowboy Bebop or Trigun level dub. Mostly this is due to the fact that most of the characters are fairly simple in characterization, as the strong points of the series lie in the Tarantino-esque plot and monologues and the Die Hard-class blowing the f**k up of s**t. They just need to hire good voice actors and a good voice director who don’t subscribe to the “if you want to seem angrier, get louder” school of thought. If the voice casters nail Revy (which should be fairly easy), and especially Rock (not so much), it’ll be a huge hit after selling a crapload of DVDs and mopping up the ratings on late night cable (because, let’s be honest, before the first episode even hit the internet, this show was more of a lock to be broadcast on Adult Swim than Bleach ever was).
o_o
I hope Genon gives Dutch a Southern drawl, Revy a New York/Bostonian accent, and have Benny talk with a sprinkle of Yiddish.
As funny as Sensei selling drunk Miki was I think that Uki Doki Memorial was funnier. If NHK had a tribute to Leeroy Jenkins I might have though that GONZO turned a new leaf. How come there’s no mention of Ohta his debate with himself over Hell’s Bunny was worth mention.
“IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH” ~ George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four
What about Higurashi’s ending song?
No Haruhi clean sweep? Nu wai.
The Ignorance Is Bliss Award.
I just saw some killer posters of Mizuho-oneesama in the animesuki forums; hope you can upload them when available, so the award could be set in stone.
Poor, poor inukami. The robot sort of squicked me out, but luckily I think naked men are funny.

Yeah, that was some horribly engrish there.
I honestly cringe whenever Revy speaks english. Something about it sends shivers up my spine.
Gah
Revy’s Engrish is one of the greatest things i’ve ever heard but, as for muteki, there was funnier comedy in School Rumbles’ first episode than there was in the entire series of muteki.
I don’t really think WoW’s as popular in Japan as FFXI is (though if my source of informations are correct, WoW’s getting pretty crazy in China & Taiwan).
And I’d still think the most terrifying Engrish moment ever in history is in one particular scene in Martian Successor Nadesico featuring the President of United States giving a speech… *goosenumps*
Kashimashi first episode have the worst I ever seen.
Watch NASA esmploying people that cannot even speak english.
Okay, we’ve got today…
>>>”Kinda funny how Revy is supposed to be speaking English all this time, yet she speaks the worst Engrish out of all the characters in 2006.”
And a little while back…

>>>”Melody Honey’s cameo… in the anime, she was the judge, and her Engrish pained me to no ends. I felt like jabbing a machete through my right temple.”
Do you have something against Megumi Toyoguchi’s Engrish skills or what? At least it wasn’t as bad as Balalaika’s. Her pronunciation was a bit better, but her inflection sounded like someone had phonetically converted her lines to kana and hadn’t told her where the word breaks or sentence stops were… Good thing Rock was talking over her most the time…
Awh, no School Rumble 2 or Magipoka in best comedy?
What about Hellsing’s Fr. Anderson as best Engrish?
IFFU ENIWAN DASU NOTTO RABU ZA ROODO JIZAS KURAISUTO, AMEN!
So random!
