the presidential awards

Hey, it’s a Monika! (Entire Image)

Yep, another oddball yet strangely timely AoMM post…

The William Jefferson Clinton Award goes to Shinji Ikari from Evangelion. Watching him getting henpecked by Asuka reminds me of Bill for some odd reason. Can’t wait for when he’s back in office as the First Man. Of course, in this analogy, the Rei clones would just be the revolving door of women that Bill has had (and will have) affairs with.

The James Knox Polk Award is the award for one of the greatest presidents to never be remember (quick, without visiting the wikipedia link, name one thing that Polk did in office!), he passed up a second term because he achieved and took care of everything he wanted to do for the country in his first term. This award goes to Alpha from YKK, who is just as underrated and rode off into the sunset with no regrets.

The George Washington Award goes to Tezuka Osamu, the father of anime. AoMM pays its homages.

The William Henry Harrison Award for being dead out of the gate goes to Zero no Tsukaima 2. The probability that I’ll be blogging this series instead of The Fanservice of Mikuru Asahina come later this year? Very low. Unless, of course, Tiffania, Siesta, and Jessica go topless before Mikuru, Ryoko, and LOL FANG-TAN.

The Barack Hussein Obama Award (hypothetical)… since I can’t wait for a “Hussein” to be voted as a president of the United States just like how I can’t wait for a Mikuru, Ryoko, and LOL FANG-TAN topless OVA (hypothetical).

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Award for decline in productivity and quality as time increases goes to Himura Kenshin, for being bad ass and awesome up until the end of the Kyoto Arc (FDR’s WWII victory). Then Kenshin went into decline ending with the almost unwatchable Reflection OVA, which mirrors FDR’s post-war doctrine and his death during his fourth term.

The Richard Milhous Nixon Award goes to Haruhi from Ouran and Mizuho from Otome wa Boku for their deceitful lies.

The Grover Cleveland Award goes to Kanon‘s Yuuichi. Just like how the Grovester bagged a girl a third of his age while in office, Yuuichi has the same affinity for younger girls. Wait, Makoto and Ayu aren’t that young? You’re kidding me! (Hint: Yuuichi said that his first love was an older woman…)

The John Fitzgerald Kennedy Award is for womanizing, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,” and “We do these things not because they are easy but because they are hard.” The award goes to Hakuoro from Utawarerumono (assuming that we pretend that the DVD specials never happened). Both strong leaders in times of difficult crisis, plus they’re both smooth with the ladies. Karura would be Marilyn.

The James Monroe Award for “the era of good feelings” goes to all the fansubbers out there because anime’s current popularity wouldn’t be possible without digital distribution.

The Theodore Roosevelt Jr. Award for speaking softy yet carry a big stick goes to Yuki Nagato from Haruhi. She’s the only one who seems to do any heavy lifting.

The Abraham Lincoln Award goes to Rin from Fate/Stay Night (h-game version). Like unifying the North and the South, I think all of our lives have been bettered by Rin’s unification of Saber and Emiya. Though I still think she should have brought Saber and Sakura closer together instead.

And, finally, the George Walker Bush Award goes to Nobita from Doraemon. Unfortunately, the besieged George doesn’t have a robotic cat with a magical pocket to bail him out.

(I hope everyone can get a better appreciation for the depth of American history. There hasn’t been much, but it’s got its moments. Happy President’s Day. Honestly… I’m just happy I have the day off from work.)

  1. quick, without visiting the wikipedia link, name one thing that Polk did in office!

I can name a few. :P Polk was the one who basically secured the entire Western United States. :) Oregon territory (Oregon, Washington, Idaho) and the Mexican owned California regions (including Nevada, Arizona, and Utah). He was also in office when Texas entered the Union as a state.

I paid attention way back in high school, and I’m an avid watcher of the History Channel. ;) Yay for trivial knowledge!

  2. I actually remembered more things about Polk than other presidents. I think I paided too much attention in middle school.

  3. Jason-san must be preparing for his midterm in American Presidents. :)

Actually, today is President’s Day in the US, where everyone above the age of 21 celebrates our previous presidents, and everyone under the age of 21 remembers we *had* previous presidents other than W, “George Clinton,” and Ben Franklin and the rest of the guys they printed onto money.

  5. At least you guys in the US get variety in your money… the ones here in Canada just has the queen.

  6. I just had a discussion with a guy on the ESPN board about Polk a few weeks ago about how underrated he was as a president.

  7. In 1844, the Democrats were split.
The three nominees for the presidential candidate
were Martin Van Buren, a former president and an abolitionist,
    James Buchanan, a moderate,
Louis Cass, a general and expansionist.
From Nashville came a dark horse riding up,
he was James K. Polk, Napoleon of the stump.

Everything I need to know about history I learned from They Might Be Giants.

  8. Wow, I’m impressed Jason Miao, very impressed.

  9. God bless America!

And damn all those baka presidents…
At least your president don’t run to Pananá with a lot of money and live pacefully…

  10. Sorry to get back down to earth, but would anyone know where to get some of this mysterious Yokohama kaidashi kikou manga (in english)? The wiki sounds very promising, and it looks like it was scanlated by Mangaproject at some point, but now it seems only the very end is available at CafeAlpha.

Ha! Thanks, Stomp. I thought it was Polk that was President when Texas entered the union in 1845 (December 29th), which would mean he was also President during the Mexican-American war (1846-1848?). I just didn’t want to look like an idiot if was wrong. Since I didn’t need to visit the Wikipedia sight to regurgitate all that Texas history (required to pass the 6th grade all those years ago), does that count?

  12. Ben Franklin and the rest of the guys they printed onto money.

If this was for comedic effect, I applaud you – I think it was hysterical. :D

As for Polk, while he achieved a lot of great things, I always remember him for the acquisition of the Oregon Territory (I believe the largest land deal the U.S. was ever involved in).

  13. > Karura would be Marilyn.
    OBJECTION! Where’s the Touka love? ;_;

  14. ykk.misago.org – heck I even remember the hostname

  15. Touka in anme is no match for Karura, while it’s exactly the opposite in game
(same can be said of Yuki/Mikuru regarding to anime/novel)

  16. indeed, when one makes a request of the emperor, and then offers payment with not just the serving of sake, but fanservice as well (it’d have gone further if not for a certain wet blanket), then Karura has arrived indeed.

  17. Ragz says:
(same can be said of Yuki/Mikuru regarding to anime/novel)

Well, that’s hardly fair. Books don’t have fanservice (well, at least not without being sold in paper sleeves), yet TEH HAXX translates whatever the medium.

Besides, Yuki owns Mikuru in the anime, too. Sorry, but it’s true.

    Now All-Woman Mikuru…

  18. >>TripleA

Do you even live in Canada? If you do you should know that only the $20 has the queen, the rest have prime ministers. As for variety we had multi-coloured money a lot longer than the US and they are still more colourful. We used to have birds on the back now too, but now they are boring “Canadian scene”. :/

Somehow I get the mental image of JFK turning into Godzilla.

  20. Dude… FDR died before the end of WWII. He had no post-war doctrine as a result (not that I blame him). Truman set up us the bomb and had his own doctrine and the Marshall Plan and shit.

I nominate Hayao Miyazaki for the Al Gore Memorial Consolation Award for Environmental Activism.

Eisenhower should have an award. Something about warning us against complexes. GitS?

  21. Yes, this much is true, FDR was dead before the end of the war, and is still my favorite president. Revitalized the country, all the while in a wheelchair.

  22. >Rooboy: As for Polk, while he achieved a lot of great things, I always remember him for the acquisition of the Oregon Territory (I believe the largest land deal the U.S. was ever involved in).

The largest Land deal was the Lousiana Purchase by Thomas Jefferson.

Btw: no T.Jefferson award with the whole Slave girl thing?

  23. PS. is the picture above a Trap?

  24. Shouldn’t the Abe Lincoln Award be given to Yu1 for reuniting Shiori and Kaori?

  25. To Xellos:

The picture above is not a trap, do not worry. She is one of my favorites from Yakitate Japan, Monica Adenauer.
She shows up somewhere in the 40’s I believe, and infact bakes bread in that outfit in the competition. She is soooooo awesome.

  26. >>Somehow I get the mental image of JFK turning into Godzilla.

Quick! Someone make a Cuban Missile Crisis anime featuring this premise!

Also Jason, Did you think all these up while watching that marathon of The Presidents on The History Channel on Saturday? This wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when I was watching it, but it’s why I remembered any of Polk’s achievements.

  27. >> (same can be said of Yuki/Mikuru regarding to anime/novel)

Lies! Yuki is obviously superior to Mikuru, whatever the medium.

  28. >>> Lies! Yuki is obviously superior to Mikuru, whatever the medium.

and i totally agree! however, nearly everyone who says that read the novel

  29. >> and i totally agree! however, nearly everyone who says that read the novel

Haha, not me :) I liked her from the start in the anime, and this was just compounded once I turned to the novels for my Haruhi fix after it was over.

  30. >>Haha, not me :) I liked her from the start in the anime, and this was just compounded once I turned to the novels for my Haruhi fix after it was over.

    Soulmate!

  31. Speaking of Utawarerumono specials, DVD4-Special has been released, and we get more Touka-love. :)

More scenes of psycho-Touka terrifying unsuspecting men. Ep04 is more or less a continuation of Ep03.

    As a Touka-fan, I approve of this. :D

    Cheers.

  32. Has anyone listened to Kyon’s version of Hare Hare Yukai in his image album? It’s been awhile since I laughed so hard listening to a song.

  33. yes, Kyon and Itsuki album are surprisingly good actually

  34. these 2 album, especially kyon one, is so much more enjoyable if understand a decent amount of japanese

  35. great news… in geass18, an old friend comes back from grave
    you go! sunrise

  36. I’m uber late and it’s questionable anyone will ever read this, but just in case I suggest you do yourself a favor and discover the Yokohama kaidashi kikou manga. It’s great, Taniguchi-great.
