Cut! Print! We’re done. No more monosyllabic guttural tones for a while. At least until the next remake. Kanon 24.
To say the least, I thought I’ve seen them all
But then you took me by surprise
I’m dreaming bout those dreamy eyes
Are we stuck in another dream sequence? Because a Dreaming Nayuki spooning a stuffed animal is definitely dream-worthy. I am disappointed that Nayuki doesn’t mumble something like, “Fire it!” in her sleep… that would have been too logical of a comedic move on Kyoto’s part.
(I kinda prefer girls who are a bit groggy in the morning… as long as they don’t attack me for waking up early to watch Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny…)
This scene caused me to go back and rewatch 23. I guess they didn’t tell us that Akiko is suddenly fine now, and it realizes my fear: that because Kyoto spent so much time early in the series on Makoto, they’re suddenly condensing the ending. It’s feeling a bit rushed compared to the original 2002 version. Not exactly a good sign. Still, it’s good to have Akiko back.
(Is it just me, or is her character design looking 200% more loli this episode than previously, or did the camera angle just take off 20 years?)
New jam-mu! I wonder what flavor this is… strawberry? Raspberry? Lemon? Forest berry? Blood? I think Akiko jam-mu will go down in history as one of those questions that just never get answered, like WTF was Anno smoking during Evangelion and how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
The “Akiko gets better” sequence should have been a great tearjerker for Nayuki, yet, we don’t get to see it at all. I’m bummed out. Oh well, worth the price of admission just to hear Nayuki say, “I can eat mom’s jam-mu whenever I want!” It’s good to have playful/innuendo-dropping Nayuki back.
Enjoyed Kaori’s expression when Akiko’s jam-mu was brought up. Though since this is the last episode, might as well trot out all the characters one more time. Hopefully, we can skip any potential male bonding moments between Jun and Yuuichi.
Gotta love how once Kaori tells him about Shiori, he runs out. Classic “I must reassemble my harem!” moment. I’d feel better about this except he runs out on Nayuki. Again.
“One… miiiiiiiillion dollars!”
Lame reunion. Okay, last time you saw each other was a romantic last day-to before she was about to die, and you’re best greeting is to rub her head a la Satoshi? Hug her!!!
Much better, even if she had to initiate it, and he has a “I have to fling this poop off of me!” look on his face. Or is it his “I’ve had her, and I want something new now” face. Either way, the most lopsided emotional reunion thus far.
The over/under for amount of tears shed this episode has to be at least 12 gallons. And I’d take the over.
Welcome back Wife Material Sayuri. It’s been a while to say the least, yet everything seems back to normal. “Neee, Mai-ee!”
Sayuri tells of their miraculous recovery… I mean… Akiko was hit by a car, and she recovered much faster! A 70-year old guy had his skull punctured by a mountain lion and recovered faster! I haven’t been this incredulous since I watched a 76er’s game where the announcer said, “Kyle Korver plays excellent defense.”
ZOMG Yuki Nagato! Though I think it would have been more hilarious if she held up a Haruhi Suzumiya novel or, better yet, a Zero no Tsukaima novel. Or just the classic “holding the book upside down.” I’m easy that way.
(Since I can’t wait/won’t remember until Fall, this has been bugging me. There’s an inordinate amount of stripper names in ZnT. Can’t you imagine an MC saying “Next up on stage three, the lovely Tiffania!” while Pour your sugar on me / Oh, I can’t get enough plays in the background? I won’t be surprised if the next girl to be introduced is named “Cinnamon,” “Desiree,” or “Akiko.” Yeah, I’m still bummed that JC Staff butchered the first season and will butcher the next.)
Yuki Nagato Service Pack 2 looks kinda old. If Akiko’s camera removed 20 years, Mai’s camera is adding a solid 50. Her glasses also reminds me of the Futurama episode where Fry sleeps with his own grandmother.
(Still, giving us Yuki Nagato Service Pack 2 is no consolation for not showing us Mai and Sayuri, in their white camisoles, washing dishes in Europe. If only I could harness my memory for good…)
Wow, the camera must be shaving off years if Yuuichi mistakes Akiko for the loliest looking of his harem. Sadly, Vegas has the odds set at:
“Hi Yuuichi-san, what are you doing?” 2 to 1.
“Hey Yuuichi-kun, what to taste my hi-mi-tsu jam-mu?” 50 to 1.
Think it’s done now. Yuuichi has brought every girl to this random cafe that constantly plays Pachelbel’s Canon. I found a version of it performed by one of my favorite brass ensembles, Canadian Brass. Though I think that Kyoto passed up a golden marketing opportunity if they just sold out and had Yuuichi take the girls to Starbucks the whole time. They could even play Alanis “I’m extremely hard up for cash even though I sold like 10 million albums ” Morissette’s acoustic version of You Outta Know in the background.
Definitely preferred the version where Yuuichi’s bummed out and falling apart on the bench… and then Nayuki comes up to him, pities him, and decides to give him up. She kisses him and then tells him that she saw Ayu’s room when she was in the hospital taking care of Akiko. The Akiko casually dropping the fact that Ayu was in a coma over coffee definitely isn’t as effective… though both leads to…
… Yuuichi sprinting to the hospital David Lee sprinting to a rebound (yes, a positive Knicks reference). Though I’m mesmerized by the nurse’s hypnotic ass.
(Mmm… Nurse Akiko… down boy! Down!)
Red hairband: $2
Angel-winged backpack: $25
Seven year stay hospital bill: $2.5 million
Reunion with the little boy that five other girls also have a crush on? Priceless.
Now this is a better reaction for an emotional reunion. If Yuuichi did anything else, I’d probably tar and feather him.
“Ahaha~ arigatou!”
Man, time flies this episode. Oh, well, I enjoy the juxtaposition of the traditional eastern-styled dresses of the women whereas the men sport more modern western clothing. This may be a good time to mention that I had sushi, cheese & crackers, and corned beef while watching the NCAA tournament at an Irish pub last night. You gotta love modern cosmopolitan society. If only I had some hummus and flat bread.
I think Mai should get her own spinoff series with Yuki Nagato. It could be the anime version of American Writers on CSPAN. Like you wouldn’t watch Mai and Yuki “talk” about books like Deathly Hallows with Inukami‘s Nadeshiko serving as STAT-GIRL.
I think that this scene would be more awesome if instead of holding flowers at a high school graduation, the girls are in a hospital waiting room holding babies: Yuuichi Jr. and Yuuichi II.
Whoa, summer clothes! If only we had a summer beach special. Nayuki’s outfit is cute whereas Yuuichi’s look very 1980’s. Reminds me of something that Kid ‘n Play might wear… bad times… bad times. Anyway, where can I order a Nayuki Special Massage? Is there a web sign-up for this service?
If only Ayu woke up and had the same reaction that Uma Thurman had for the first part of Kill Bill. Mai could fill in for Lucy Liu’s role.
We’re treated to a two minute montage showing all of the other harem girls caring for Ayu with Horie Yui narrating everything that has happened so far. After watching a bit too much NCAA action this week, I think Dick Vitale should be narrating instead… “The sword girl, ba-by!!!”
(It’s also worth noting that like a few more months go by during this montage. If at the start of this episode we’re in the middle or end of winter, we’re already towards the end of summer by now.)
Needs more sharp objects and sooner. Anime can only be improved by the introduction of sharp objects and the subtraction of spikey-haired, emo males.
My sense of time must be really off. Here we get falling leaves…
… and now we have lush green trees behind Shiori. Though I like Shiori’s theory that they’re all in Ayu’s dream, and because Ayu wishes for Yuuichi’s happiness, she’s alive… Akiko’s alive… Mai’s alive… it’s a poetic and romantic thought. I can see Grey’s Anatomy ripping off this idea next season.
(I’m also digging Shiori’s summer outfit. The sweater is a bit much… while I think I have that shirt that Yuuichi’s wearing in my closest. Troubling. Gotta hand it to Kyoto… they know outfits. I wish I could say the same thing about Bart’s red T-shirt or Marge’s green dress.)
Black Jesus. I couldn’t be giddier. If only the Boondocks team did a remake of Kanon: Black Kanon. Then we may really get the Saori and Mai showing off JaYuuichi Jr and Mister Yuuichi II in the hospital waiting room.
(If you can figure out which NBA player I’m referring to with the names, you get +10 fanboy points as well as +10 street cred.)
Prayer is often the last refuse. Never saw Yuuichi having an ounce of religion in him, yet he’ll probably go Mormon if it’ll save Ayu and let him marry Nayuki, Mai, Saori, Shiori, Kaori, and Jun at the same time. Maybe not Kaori.
After watching the haircutting scene that reminded me of TSR, I’m reminded of the Fumoffu episode where the class is supposed to draw Sagara, but instead he flakes out and goes John Rambo on them. I think lost in all the Kyoto hype is that they have the keys to not one but two premier franchises. I want more Full Metal Panic, dammit!
Nayuki’s the best. Though I am disappointed that we never really got into her story. We need to spin her off to for her own show… I’m thinking it’ll be like E!’s Wild On where Nayuki travels around the world, visiting beaches, hotspots, and nightclubs. I want to see her overwhelmed expression upon entering a foam and bubble party at Ibiza where all the girls make hookers look like Scientologists.
One thing about anime that I like is that it’s limited in episodes and usually knows when to wrap up a story. True, there’s some cases where we need more episodes (Onimaru ramen, anyone?) and some cases where the cord needed to be cut (Bleach… like… 100 episodes ago), but, for the most part, the stories just wrap up. American TV is a bit different where shows get milked and milked and milked even if the plot is overplayed and diluted. It’s like The X-Files… great show for the first four or five seasons, then it started going down hill. Fox, desperate for ratings, kept the show on and just made a quagmire out of the final four seasons and thus making the whole series less enjoyable.
I think the same thing is happening with Lost. The first two seasons were enjoyable, but to keep up the pace, they need to start fabricating stuff that they probably didn’t plan for. And then ABC probably wants another 4 or 5 seasons after this one, which means we get more character dilution (how much of Locke have you seen lately?) and more convoluted plots. We’re at The X-Files season four/five mark with Lost right now, I think. And it’s going to be a rough ride.
And in a few seasons the same thing will happen with Heroes. All spiffy now, until they run out of stuff to plagiarize from Harbringer Comics and have to start making stuff up (i.e. the Mai Otome Zwei… or even Mai Otome phase). At some point, it’s going to jump the shark as well.
But that’s the strength of anime. Kanon isn’t getting another 24 episodes where Yuuichi moves to Tokyo, hooks up with a goth girl there, and all the old haremettes get jealous and create a portal between his two rooms (I hope this isn’t happening at least). Sometimes, the end is the end.
Anyway, thanks for Yuuichi’s T-shirt for sparking my rant.
(And I’m thinking he’s wearing that T-shirt to just show the parallels between how Kanon could just all be a dream, just like Lost.)
I keep expecting Mai to suggest something like, “Sleeping Beauty” or “Pocahontas.” She instead gives out the nebulous, “Find her. Go find her.” Since her body is there, I doubt she’s referring to that so… quick, someone get those Ghostbusters on the phone!
Now we’re back to winter. So far, this episode has covered almost a full year in less than 15 minutes. We’re treated to another Horie Yui-glazed montage as we fast forward even more in time. Her dialogue now is just so sweet and fluffy, I feel like I just overdosed on Halloween candy.
Looking good, Mai… looking good.
I think every male who has waited outside a Macy’s changing room while being tossed no-win questions like, “Does this blouse make me look fat?” and “What’s the limit on the credit card again?” while missing a big football game can emphasize with Jun here.
And we’re back to winter! It’s taken a whole 16 minutes and 10 seconds, but we’ve done two years thus far this episode. I like Horie Yui’s seiyuu abilities and all, but it’s gotten to the point where I’m hoping a sniper would put poor Ayu out of her misery. The corny factor has from the dialogue and the montage has just approached dangerous William Shatner levels.
Amano! Good to see you again.
I don’t care what other people say about Yuuichi, but compared to 2002 Yuuichi, 2006-7 Yuuichi is much, much, much, much more sincere of a character. The 2002 one didn’t seem to do much and didn’t show any emotion at all. I didn’t like him very much. I find the 2006-7 more believable as a character, and the fact that he seems to be now a cross (lovechild, if you will) between Kyon’s and Itsuki’s personalities only make him a more interesting character. The only way I think Kyoto could have make Yuuichi “better” is to either cross him with Sagara and give him a stun gun… or just give him tentacles.
There’s just not enough sunsets in anime. By contrast, I think every other important event in Kanon happens either at sunrise or sundown.
When Loli Yuuichi told Loli Ayu that “I have something for you,” did anyone else think, “Oh gosh, I hope he doesn’t open up his trenchcoat and flash her!”
Kinda of anticlimactic in that the whole episode has been about celebrating the other girls and speeding up to this moment. By the time we see Ayu and Yuuichi correct their “wrong,” it just feels a bit bland and overdue. Basically, this episode has felt like a long awards show… and the red headband is the final trophy.
Are we sure that there’s not a penis on this? Positive? Anything goes but don’t blink you might miss.
At first, I thought that this was Itsuki… which would make sense if Ayu were male.
So Ayu’s been in this coma for the past seven years, doesn’t that mean that her mental progression and growth is seven years behind? Does this mean that Yuuichi is actually dating someone with the mental age of a 12 year old and the body of a… uh…. 9 year old? What was my point again? Nevermind. Yuuichi doesn’t get my vote for the male harem lead pantheon just because he picks Ayu (twice!) over the far superior Nayuki and Mai models.
So this is a happy ending right? While the animation has greatly improved and the plot lines are more fleshed out, there’s still three things that Kyoto didn’t improve on:
1. The Ayu ending. Ugh. Seen it already… give us something new.
2. The music. Ugh. Give us something new. At least let Horie Yui sing an insert song or at least sneak Aya Hirano into the cast so we could have a Horie Yui-Aya Hirano duet. Who wouldn’t like that?
3. The rushed ending. 2 years compressed into a single episode and no real Nayuki arc. They should have made 24 just a tear jerker about Ayu, and then gave us a 60 minute beach special OVA that shows what happens to the other girls.
And the final girl that we see? Yep… Beastly Makoto. My favorite three things about this Kanon remake?
1. Mai’s arc. Finally some justice… not to mention the strapless dresses. Woohoo!
2. The Kyonification of Yuuichi. I can’t wait for Kyoto to turn Sagara into Kyon as well. That would be fantastic.
3. Sleepy Nayuki and Akiko’s jam-mu (tie).
Of course, the biggest surprise (for me) for this episode was the ninja announcement of Clannad. My initial thoughts were, “Can we please get a restraining order on Key? Keep them away from Kyoto.” and “Wait, does this mean we won’t get more Haruhi until 2009?” I guess I’m just not really in the mood to watch yet another Kyoto-produced Key h-game turned anime featuring characters who look and act the same. If this were a baseball game, it’ll be like the pitcher throwing two curveballs in a row… it may be time to change it up a little and go to the fastball (Haruhi) or slider (Full Metal Panic) once in a while.
And, finally, big thanks to everyone who followed Kanon with me. It’s been fun.
It’s only been a year from the start of ep24 to when Yuuichi finds the hairband. Ayu’s narration of the seasons started *after* Yuuichi left for the forest clearing. Do you think he actually took a year to get there?
For once, Clannad is an all-ages game, not a h-game.
What about Ayu’s hat at the end? I looks like she stole it from Ama-san and dyed it a different color. Is that supposed to be some kind of hint about a Kyoto remake of SHUFFLE?
I wonder if Kyoto can increase its output without sacrificing quality. I hope so because if want more FMP and Haruhi and I want it fast.
Well, it was fun while it lasted. They really could have done more with the ending, but I still enjoyed the series as a whole.
Anyways, good show. Could have used more Nayuki or Akiko ending. And more Sawatari Mikuru. Anyways:
>> If only Ayu woke up and had the same reaction that Uma Thurman had for the first part of Kill Bill. Mai could fill in for Lucy Liu’s role.
Phew! I’m relieved I’m not the only one who thought of Kill Bill! *wipes some sweat*
>> the girls are in a hospital waiting room holding babies: Yuuichi Jr. and Yuuichi II.
Don’t you mean “Kyon” and “Itsuki”?
>> The only way I think Kyoto could have make Yuuichi “better†is to either cross him with Sagara and give him a stun gun… or just give him tentacles.
Even better, get him brain damaged in the same fashion as Fuminori Sakisaka.
>> When Loli Yuuichi told Loli Ayu that “I have something for you,†did anyone else think, “Oh gosh, I hope he doesn’t open up his trenchcoat and flash her!â€
I was thinking of Ayu going “Yaranaika?”.
>> Does this mean that Yuuichi is actually dating someone with the mental age of a 12 year old and the body of a… uh…. 9 year old?
9 year old BOY.
Regards.
>> What about Ayu’s hat at the end? I looks like she stole it from Ama-san and dyed it a different color. Is that supposed to be some kind of hint about a Kyoto remake of SHUFFLE?
Hahaha, oh wow.
1. Kanon is 1999. Way before Shuffle!
2. The hat’s always been there. Yeah, since the game.
Actually, Ama stole it from Ayu. Good riddance, I’d say, since it looks so much better on her.
great post~
though i disagree on music part
i think kyoani would have to face some very ferocious fans if they abandon Key’s music (though Kanon’s original music was not as pantheon as Air’s, to be sure)
I don’t really think Shuffle needs a remake. There was quite enough fanservice and boxcutters to tide me over in the original.
But yeah, other than the feel-good ending, this episode was much too rushed. Like show-ruining rushed, I think.
I’ll see your Canada Brass version of Canon and raise you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdxkVQy7QLM
To MRonin:
Kanon predates Shuffle.
Cheers.
Kanon was a good series as a whole even though some parts could have been done better.
Next up is Lucky Star. Kinda strange that there hasn’t yet been a promo for it.
Everyone should read the Suzumiya Haruhi novels just for this scene in The Indignation of Suzumiya Haruhi:
Putting all her weight on my body, Haruhi then pushed me down to the floor. Haruhi rode me like a horse, getting in the mount position. She was trying to slip her hands inside my blazer. But I still resisted somehow.
“Yuki, lend me a hand here! Go grab Kyon’s hands!”
As she said that, Haruhi had started taking my blazer off. Hey hey hey, shouldn’t you be ashamed of youself!? Is stripping Asahina-san not enough for you, you pervert girl!?
still, that hat is all Ama-san. Ayu is fail and bronze.
anyone else insert their own dramatic music (DA DA DUUUUMMMM!) when they saw the sapling growing from the stump?
Endings are hard to pull off, at least Kyoto didn’t screw up completely.
And I just rewatched episode 14 and noticed that Sayuri is a wrist cutter… That turns me on…
is done
Yes this last episode did seem a bit rushed, whats wrong with doing a 26 episode series? I ever saw the first kanon but this series is now my favorite this season, it never lost its’ finesse like Death Note has been doing recently and i’m already a suck in for these romantic dramas.
When you say on your second thing wrong with the kyoto kanon about needing new music I assume you mean that awful intro? like air, I think the background music throughout the series really went well with it.
But, why the insanely happy ending? I thought the ending was going to be something that was going to have people trying to hold back tears, but instead everyone is just fine. Ok thanks Ayu i’m sure its all your fault with your “miracles” so now I have one more reason to dislike you, you messed up the ending.
Just to be fair though Ayu’s story did give the audience the most to think about such as how did Ayu materialize throughout the series, why is she better all of a sudden, hell, as soon as episode 23 ended I was like wait…. Those “Yume….” intros around the beginning of the series WERE important! Thanks Ayu for making the series interesting and thought provoking but seriously there are other mircacles that can be done besides miraculously reviving Yuuichis’ harem and changing the entire mood of the series up to this point.
One last question, was there originally more to Nayuki’s arc or did kyoto pretty much cover it? this is what I got out of it. Start arc: emo over akiko > emo convo with Yuuichi > force Yuuichi to remember wrecking snow bunny > converse with Yuuichi at bench: End arc am I missing something?
being the last kanon post I’d like to say GO MAI!
>> Is that supposed to be some kind of hint about a Kyoto remake of SHUFFLE?
well, there is already a shuffle remake…. and its ongoing right now
If only they did a reversal and made a real honest-to-goodness hentai out of Clannad. Kyoto Animation only has three genres left to do: 4-koma, hentai, and original material.
>>> was there originally more to Nayuki’s arc
there is quite a bit more to Nayuki arc, but it would seem rather ackward to introduce those without going into Nayuki ending though
You want more FMP?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqyotcaXDpc
Tesssssaaaaaaaaaa~~~
Anywho. A fairly competent ending to the show. Certainly owns the hell out of Air’s ending at least. The series definitely comes off as one of the strongest harem shows I’ve ever watched. Overall glad I watched it, for all that Mai or Nayuki needed to have an ending, damnit.
@Skane
I’m aware of that, but I haven’t played the game or seen the first series so don’t know if it was in the original game, first series, or something KyoAni did themselves.
@Ragz
Did Memories turn into an actual remake? Last I saw of it, it was out of order plot summaries with stock footage from the original and a little extra narration.
That…wasn’t the last episode I was expecting. Very different tone from all the other episodes.
Initially after the wakeup I thought “this is another dream”…but then it kept being a dream for the next 20 minutes.
If I were an Ayu fan I would probably be upset with that ending. Absolutely no romantic reunion…or any overt gestures of affection (but then if someone gave me a manky old hairband which had been lying around in a forest for seven years I don’t think I’d show them any overt gestures of affection either).
However happily I’m not, and I could enjoy seeing Shiori magically well again and hers and Yuuichi’s reunion(which could have been handled better none the less), as well as Mai and Sayuri and a happy Nayuki again.
Personally I’d have preferred Ayu to have truly died last episode, and her last wish paving the way to a less miraculous recovery for the rest of the cast. It would have fitted better. As it is the sudden shift in reality kind of kills any of the emotion built up over the course of the series.
A fairly competent ending? I don’t know. Having seen both 2002 and 2006… I think both suck. Like Jason, I take offense at them crushing an entire year (!) and the entire cast into one freakin’ episode. That, and the false hope offered when they showed U1 waking up Nayuki. Damn you Kyoto!
>> “Kyoto Animation only has three genres left to do: 4-koma, hentai, and original material.”
Actually, they have made their own “original material” anime before called Munto. I’ve heard that you shouldn’t expect to much from it though…
Overall, loved Kanon. However, after they ended Shiori’s arc and moved on to Ayu, my opinion of the showed seemed to go down a bit.
Can’t wait for Clannad, glad I don’t have to resort to seeing Toei’s movie version first.
im confused, did he end up doing the loli or not?
>>Initially after the wakeup I thought “this is another dreamâ€â€¦but then it kept being a dream for the next 20 minutes.
That’s exactly what I thought and exactly what I really hoped was the case.
@MaverickRonin
Shuffle! Memories is turning into a failure all its own. it is nothing but recaps of the original so far, with everyone pining in their own way in the narrations about the Asa ending, even Asa herself. the only new material i’ve been seeing are the openings and endings, which are showing alternate endings which NEED to be done in full (Kaede and Sia demand this).
one more point in its failure, is the editing done to the “R-15” scenes from the original airing. boo!
Just wait till the Kanon06 OVA comes out…while Kyon/Itsuki/Yuiichi is pushing Ayu across the street, he’ll hear a call from Mai, stop in mid-street, turn around to see what she wants, only for Ayu’s wheel-chair to get nailed by a passing truck while his back is turned. And thus we get: Kanon06-7: Enter the Coma
CLANNAD is not an h-game.
So this means you will ne reviewing GEASS right?
This wasn’t really an Ayu ending, she just joined the harem physically.
I liked it, it felt like all the girls still had a chance.
Thanks for the laugh, needed that.
Cheers ^^
…ah it’s over…
…the beginning was really slow…the middle was wonderfully done…but the ending was really a bit too rushed…
…still it was overall a superior show…even if the sniper with a bullet with Ayu’s name on it never showed up…much to my sorrow…
…by the way I don’t think a Sagara mark 2.0 with Kyon’s personality would be as enjoyable as the original really…I mean Sagara’s whole charm, and I use the word lightly, is that he’s Sagara…he’s got firefights and military hierarchy on the mind and little else…making him even a little bit more socially adept would take away his ability to play off the personalities of the rest of the gang…
…just because a combination works doesn’t mean it will always work…Kyonizing Yuuichi works but Sagara is out of the picture…
Allways enjoyed your blogs, thanks!
To MRonin:
The hat was in the Kanon game. Just reference to the Kanon game CG-sets out there.
Cheers.
Can someone tell me what could’ve been the Nayuki story in the original game (or even in the TOEI verision)?
Thanks.
Take a glance of Ayu’s hat, did anyone else think, “O Lucy sama, will u show us the pieces of Yuiichi in the last minute? (rewatch Elfen Lied would be helpful)” However, Kyoani missed the final chance for a tragic ending…
>>Allways enjoyed your blogs, thanks!
That’s what I really want to say.
I have to say that as a first time experiance into Kanon, this was an amazing ride. And even though I feel Makoto got an entire episode too many the rest easily made up for this small problem.
NOW, I get to go back to crying in my corner as a wait for my Haruhi boxset to arrive in a little over 2 months. Maybe the spring anime will help distract me from my pain.
Thx for your hard work, Jason
>>> Maybe the spring anime will help distract me from my pain.
april lineup looks quite promising… hopefully not another bunch of empty promises
Aaaah, and it’s over.
I still think it should’ve been Mai ending, wouldnt balk at Nayuki ending too… oh well.
I agree, this ep feels rushed. If you check cal.syoboi.jp for airing schedules, you may be aware of the fact they originally put 26 eps for Kanon, only to later reduce to 24. And it really looks like the series would do well with two eps more! Could there be more to the story here? Mwah~
Anyway, thanks for great insight Jason, i found myself a frequent visitor here, and digging into the older entries for loads of fun. Thanks for the hard work so far. Now, I’m waiting to see just what you’ll blog next :)
Thanks for your blog, loved your comments on Kanon. Periodically checking to see what new show you’ll blog on, but thanks for the ride.
Kyoto really outdo themselves, and Kanon was no disappointment. A couple of things they could of done better though:
– Makoto. If I was to dissect Kanon in my head, it’d be Makoto for the first half, then Mai, Shiori, Nayuki and Ayu in the second half. Not good planning, it leaves you with no time with the other characters. Yes, I am exaggerating, but that’s how it felt to me.
– I thought Kanon was sad girls in snow? By this, I thought there’d be one of those AIR endings, those bittersweet endings. I can’t even remember how AIR ended now, only I do remember I cried. I don’t recall getting teary at Kanon.
– Kyoto needs to quit with these game animes and get back to their awesome franchises of FMP and Suzumiya Haruhi.
– I wouldn’t of minded an Hirano Aya duet. With whoever. I don’t care who. I just want her involved.
Kanon is over and there we shall move onto other things.
My only regret is that Makoto arc took TOO long.
Now the other things that will come in April:
* Do want:
– Lucky Star:
I can’t wait to see an Azumanga Daioh-like anime done by KyoAni.
– Nanoha StrikerS:
Oh god I can’t wait to see more of Nanoha, Fate and Hayate. Grown-up.
– Darker Than Black:
Bones + Yoko Kanno + Spy/Noir genre = Love.
– Claymore:
Jason blogged some time ago about it, if I remember right. I should give it a try.
– Devil May Cry:
Madhouse have done Gungrave, as one of the sole example of game to anime adaptation done right imo. Can they do it again with Devil May Cry?
Do not Want:
– Idolmaster Xenoglossia:
Sunrise + loli idols + mecha = potential trainwreck.
I don’t give two shit about whether it have high production values, just the formula alone gives me goosebumps.
But it is potentially something that can be made fun of.
Lucky Star have a lot of potential. A gag anime by Kyoto Animation (FMP: Fumoffu) following the daily life of a couple of school girls (Azumanga Daioh) with a touch of otaku fandom (Genshiken). I’m guessing best comedy anime of 2007 :)
I’m reserving judgement on Lucky Star. More random animes aren’t usually my cup of tea. I shall give it a try though, just by virtue that its KyoAni making it
> “Her glasses also reminds me of the Futurama episode where Fry sleeps with his own grandmother.”
Well, then again, he IS his own grandfather after all.
…I guess that really doesn’t make it any less weird though.
Some time back Jason or someone posted a Kanon girl, screne time matrix, is there any chance that person kept that up and continued to updata it?
Thanks for the fun time.
yeah if kanon had those 2 episodes it wouldnt have ruined it for me…but atleast it wasnt final fantasy unlimited bad XD
>>>Bluestreak2
ordering off amazon too? ill be joining you in that corner…ill probable starve to death cause ill be clawing at the wall moaning oharuhi-sama
I thought that the ending was really unsatisfying. Why?
1. I wanted Makoto kitsune to meet and talk to Yuuichi again. I love Makoto to death, and the kitsune at the end is simply not enough. What’s painful is that she can still create her human body if she wants to, and she even came and protected Yuuichi in his time of need, but then in the last episode, where all the Kanon girls come in, she’s nowhere to be found.
2. Too little Nayuki. So much could have been done with her character, yet everything was wiped out. Something magical could have been done about her sleepiness, but nothing. Then let her have an emotional scene over Akiko’s recovery, tears of joy, something! She went into such a depression when Akiko got hurt, but when Akiko’s fine, just her usual self. Okay, can’t do that? At least let her like Yuuichi still, so that there can be the jealousy and all. But no, that had to be cut out too. Nayuki is not a Kanon girl. She’s just…there.
3. Ayu should have died. Period.
hmmmm well I thought the ending was not dramatic enough… but it is a good series as a whole….
what happened to code geass anyway? you don’t seem to care about the rebellion anymore…..
I miss the whole alarm clock message from Nayuki in the TOEI version. was that skipped in this one? and was that actually from the game or did TOEI just add it as a nice touch?
Either way as much as I loved this show, i think the nayuki story got the shaft and that seems to be the prevailing opinion.
>>> I miss the whole alarm clock message from Nayuki in the TOEI version. was that skipped in this one? and was that actually from the game or did TOEI just add it as a nice touch?
it was not in the game
however, in Nayuki arc, U1 recorded his confession on the alarm clock and left it in front of Nayuki’s room when Nayuki shut him out
Oh man that was a rushed ending, but I liked it. Glad Kanon is over. It was always painful having to wait for the next episode. YAY WAIFU SAYURI APPEARS! :)
Damn, everyone wants more Nayuki! But, because she is so adorable, who wouldn’t? :P
CLANNAD looks interesting from the preview, then again it could just be KyoAni’s amazing production ability. However, having it immediately follow Kanon is a bit much, isn’t it? I hear that the CLANNAD movie will be fall of 2007 and the TV series will air in 2008. So… where does that put Lucky Star for this year? And where the hell will Haruhi Suzumiya be? And what of poor Full Metal Panic? :(
ANN reports Lucky Star airing in April.
Can I trust it?
Susan-What’s painful is that she can still create her human body if she wants to, and she even came and protected Yuuichi in his time of need
Actually, that was the older, original, human Makoto that picked him up, not Makoto the kitsune. Yuuichi in his delirium thought it was fox Makoto.
What’s next for blogging Jason, Lucky Star?
“”Actually, that was the older, original, human Makoto that picked him up, not Makoto the kitsune. Yuuichi in his delirium thought it was fox Makoto.””
No, I meant the kitsune Makoto that came before the real Makoto appeared, in episode 22.
It’s a tragic ending! Since we never actually see Ayu waking up from a coma, thus the epilogue that shows Ayu with Yuuichi in the park is actually a dream.
That’s right, Ayu is still comatose, dreaming a happy life with Yuuichi when in fact she’s still sleeping and dreaming, like Sam Lowry in Brazil. It only makes sense since in order for Yuuichi’s harem to miraculously recover, her waking life would have to be sacrificed in order for the wish to come true.
Isn’t it sad Ayu? ;_;

well, since clannad is a movie made by toei(wtf with key-toei-kyoani 3some anyway… kyoani/toei both did kanon tv, kyoani did air tv while toei did air movie, now the samething happening with clannad) it will air in theater, and have no effect on tv schedule
lucky star is in stone for april air, SHnY2 still have a good chance of airing oct, FMP however…. prob late 2008 or 2009 ; ;
>> No, I meant the kitsune Makoto that came before the real Makoto appeared, in episode 22.
Meh, that was like, her spirit, or something. Beastly Makoto can’t switch back to her human self anymore.
Might I offer you a Can of Spite Jason, psssst. Mmmm delicious. Oh I have to back and read that in full. I get the humour part of the blog now. Sorry for being a killjoy earlier.
Great job as always, Jason. Didn’t think the 76ers did anything good enough to be mentioned here… I guess CLANNAD will be announced in more detail at this weekend’s Tokyo Anime Fair. I went to last year’s one, and I still can’t believe I did not see or hear a single reference to Haruhi there, which was right before it aired. More people there must know KyoAni’s power now…
well, rest assured, you will hear plenty about clannad
even though it’s mostly built on Air and Kanon, i think it supasses both (not to mention Nonaka Ai is in it… i still can’t believe she has no role in april lineup)
kara no kyoukai on the other hand, prob won’t be as lucky
a å¼/ç¹” vs. å¿—è²´/å››å£ match up would certainly be interesting (pronounced Shiki/Shiki vs. Shiki/Shiki for utter confusion)
“Sunrise + loli idols + mecha = potential trainwreck.
I don’t give two shit about whether it have high production values, just the formula alone gives me goosebumps.
But it is potentially something that can be made fun of.”
Okay first of all this Sunrise=Trainwreck thing stopped being funny ages ago if it ever was. Secondly maybe that’s just it, something fun and goofy to look at. For something to trainwreck it actually has to start of with the pretense of being a top-quality story, which this isn’t even attempting to do. I don’t think people understand the meaning of the word trainwreck and just like to throw it around because they think they are clever by doing so and because they have no idea what they are talking about when referring to Sunrise, which also makes them look clever.
I am literally beyond tired of seeing this outright false myth that Sunrise is historically famous for doing this. All you need to do is go back and look at all the series they have done and see how many ended in disaster and how many were popular successes. I’ll give you the list right here. SPT Layzner (due to complications resulting in cancellationa and fixed with an OVA), Densetsu Kyojin Ideon (due to complications resulting in cancellation and fixed with a movie), fast forward 20 or more years Gundam Seed Destiny (due to horrid writing staff that is now no longer working for the company in positions of power).
It’s not funny or clever when something isn’t even remotely steeped in the truth, so stop doing it already.
And in other news, Nina masturbates on a table… even if the volcabulary is imprecise the sense is there. And don’t we love them for that. ;)
I also wish that the epilouge would have been longer…geez it was so rushed. I
I have decided that don’t like Toei animation’s old-skool animation btw.
Thanks for the detailed blogging; the narration and insight in the responding comments are great. In fact, I think I’ll reread some of the old entries.
