hayate the combat butler 1

Maria, say it loud and there’s music playing.
Say it soft and it’s almost like praying,
Maria, I never stop saying: Maria!

Hayate is a charming story a boy tossed into dept by his despicable and gambling addicted parents who left him to go Atlantic City with Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley. To try to earn money, he stumbles across the rich-looking Nagi and decides to kidnap her for ransom… unfortunately, it doesn’t work out that way as she thinks it’s a confession of love instead.

So far, it looks like it’s following the manga with relatively minor changes, which is both good and bad. It’s good as in I don’t have to worry about an epic Code Geass-level butcher job but bad that I once again get the “Been there, done that” feeling that I got with Black Lagoon. Plus, there’s the utter disappointment that we won’t be getting Maria fanservice, which has been my main complaint of the manga. *sob* The artwork and animation is passable (read: not as bad as Otome wa Boku) but not of the same Tide Line Blue or even Sumomomo Momomo visual quality.

Yes, I’m looking forward to more of Hayate the Combat Butler, and, hopefully, the anime can capture the same comedic feel of the manga.

“Because you’re poor.”

OUCH.

Shana’s seiyuu, Rie Kugimiya, for Nagi… man, she’s typecast. Anytime you need a bratty, spoiled, quick tempereted, slightly socially awkward, ツンデレ loli with an attitude voiced, you know who to call. When she was demanding that Hayate buy her a drink to warm her up, yep, no different from any other Rie Kugimiya role…

image

Rie Tanaka as Maria. We’re in good hands, especially since she’s reusing her Mariel voice. Good times… good times. It’s about frickin’ time a Class A Meido returned into our lives. Yes, it’s Kanon‘s greatest failing (besides Makoto) that they didn’t slap a meido outfit on Nayuki.

image

I wonder what they Synergy SP (Hayate’s production house) was trying to accomplish here. Mmmm…

(They also like using their own name in their anime. Watch for varions “Synergy” products to pop up like Synergy Soda and Synergy Cheezy Bites Pizza.)

image

Hey, it’s Laharl… which netherworld did I stumble into again? Hayate himself is a cross between Zero no Tsukaima‘s Saito and Wolverine. He’s stuck between the wrathful loli that’ll kill him if he lusts after the superior meido, yet he has mutant super healing powers.

image

How big of a loser do you have to be to try and get it on with a loli on Christmas Eve? Chris Hansen? Where are you? Japan (or Area Eleven as you will) needs you!

image

Are we sure it’s not “Special Consultant: Chris Hansen” in the credits?

  1. Ah I’ve heard many great things about this series I’m looking forward to watching it all and checking out what this blog has to offer on it for the time to come.

  2. “Hayate himself is a cross between Zero no Tsukaima’s Yuji and Wolverine. He’s stuck between the wrathful loli that’ll kill him if he lusts after the superior meido, yet he has mutant super healing powers.”

I’m trying to imagine claws on Hayate with “I’m the best at what I do, and what I do isn’t pretty.” coming out in broken english. I think it could be Archer class Engrish right there.

I think your confusing your loli doormat heroes. Saito was Louise’s favorite object to test her new riding crops on, while Yuji had to contend with Shana taking her aggression out on him in the form of “training”. Though all three did have to contend with tempermental Rie Kugimiya voiced lolis beating down on them if they tried to stray to the melon pan, and all three shows did have superior meidos…

I wish for once they’d stray to the melon pan. Resist the loli, Hayate! Break the mold! Do the unexpected! Go for Hinagiku instead!

  3. HAYATE! I must find and download.. immediately. Hope they keep the lawsuit-in-waiting references to various shows, and that the animation is good. I already see the Gendou rip off, so looking forward to this.

  4. >> I think your confusing your loli doormat heroes.

    Fixed. I screwed up. :(

  5. OH MY GOSH ITS GENDO!

  6. Victory!!1oneventy! http://www.moetron.com/2007/04.....-shana-ii/

    It’s Shana V2.0

  7. So Gendo is at it again looking for more blue haired and under aged “dolls.” Looks like he took the NAMBLA path…

  8. >>(MELL sings the ED, Proof, and, yes, I was disappointed that Engrish didn’t randomly break out.)

Mell with no engrish!?? Tell me its an April Fools joke!

  9. I’ve waited for this. Maria is by far the most lovable maid. Of all time.

  10. watched 4 april series so far, all superb quality
and the heavily anticipated series still yet to come

looks like this season pretty worth look forward to

Seirei No Moribito is the best so far, pretty much what one expect from a Production I.G series

  11. I read the manga: This spit blows.

How anybody can get enjoyment from this… They’re not human anymore.

  12. >> I read the manga: This spit blows.

The imagery I’m getting from that is just…beyond my ability to convey with words.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing how this anime will turn out. Did anybody else watching think that Rie Kugumiya’s voicing of the role sounds almost like a cross between Shana and Kamyu?

  13. On a unrelated note. Nanoha StrikerS is awesome.

    >>I read the manga: This spit blows.

How anybody can get enjoyment from this… They’re not human anymore.

Care to elaborate why you didn’t like it?

  14. On the bright side, perhaps the real reason why Satoshi Hino didn’t get the role was because Hayate isn’t interested in Lolis =D

  15. >>Stag.S Says: Care to elaborate why you didn’t like it?

I’ll try “Loser Male Lead Gets Butt Kicked 24/7” for $9000, Alex.

(And then there’s that snobbish ego from the manga artist.)

  16. There are some minor changes from the manga which I find rather amusing.

  17. Rie Kugimiya also played Rizel in Rizelmine, which was quite a deredere role. Though she’s blow up sometimes, which I guess makes her a deretsun.

  18. >>Lord Mashymer Says: I’ll try “Loser Male Lead Gets Butt Kicked 24/7″ for $9000, Alex.

(And then there’s that snobbish ego from the manga artist.)

“Snobbish ego?” “Loser Male Lead Gets Butt Kicked 24/7?”

Are you sure this is the same Hayate we’re talking about?

Up to volume 5, I got the impression that Hayate was much more formidable, especially personality-wise, than most Harem Beta Males. At this point, he’s something of an “unassuming badass,” so I wonder if your opinion might be mistaken. I can’t stand harem stories with pathetic leads, but Hayate was much more fun and just a little loopy–which is probably why so many people were looking forward to the anime.

And I still don’t know where you get the “snobbish ego” comment from–could you elaborate?

    Further, I mean. Elaborate further.

  19. Long live tsundere lolis voiced by Rie Kugimiya.

  20. If you need further explanation, then you’re beyond help and hope. :(

  21. Mashymer: obviously you haven’t read until the point where Hayate almost uses Kenshin’s fighting style, but has to halt it due to copyright issues.

  22. ^
Or the part where he fend off an army of bodyguards…

Or the part where he defeated the mafia hitmen…

Or the part where he destroyed the giant robot (Which one? Doesn’t matter!)…

“If you need further explanation, then you’re beyond help and hope.”

Hey I remember that line! Don’t people use it when they run out of things to say?

  23. Yeah, Hayate is tougher than most male leads and damn near indestructible. I don’t understand the “Loser Male Lead Gets Butt Kicked 24/7” bit at all.
Mayhaps young Mr.Mashymer has this tale confused with another?

  24. Still ” Male Lead Gets Butt Kicked 24/7 ” is true, especially when any female tries to kick his butt.

  25. I can’t recall any girl in the tale trying to kick Hayate’s butt (and apart from Maria, I doubt he’d let them).
In fact, aside from his horrible Mother, they all quite like him (some platonically, some romantically}, and wish him the best.
Even Nagi’s more of a deretsun than a tsundere when it comes to Hayate.

  26. 1) I was born in 1974, TYVM.
    2) I dealt with shows like Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, Love Hina, and Maburaho. And I have yet to see a piece of Japanese Animation where a guy blocks or defend himself from an attach from the opposite sex. Successfully.
    3) I bought and read the first Hayate Combat Butler manga. And threw it away.

  27. Okay… But why are you telling us this? It doesn’t really defend your point on why you think Hayate’s a “Male Lead Gets Butt Kicked 24/7” when there’s clearly enough evidences to disprove that claim…

Oh btw, you’re choice of animes seems to be prety old… But non-related to this nonetheless.

  28. Well maybe you should stop playing devils advocate and atleast try to see my point of view. This is not something I’m saying for the sake of trolling, you know.

Hayate not realizing early that his loser parents were gonna sell him for organ donations, can’t even kidnap a rick girl properly, invincibe yet can’t even fight off a tiger and the yakuza. That’s some of the textbook “loser male lead” if I ever see it.

Seriously: Stop looking at cute females and dig deeper into what you’re watching. Lest you like the idea of having loser parents who gamble too much and are willing to sell you off for body parts.

  29. Then I shall reply you with information given only from the first book.

“Hayate not realizing early that his loser parents were gonna sell him for organ donations, can’t even kidnap a rick girl properly, invincibe yet can’t even fight off a tiger and the yakuza. That’s some of the textbook “loser male lead” if I ever see it.”

A texbook ‘loser male lead’ isn’t someone who is given a bad hand in life, a loser male is someone who is completely lacks any backbone and any form of ‘power’ to defend himself and usually relies on the good-will of others.

Hayate is perfectly capable to stand up for himself and to fight for those who are important to him. There’s a difference between being kind-hearted, and being a doormat.

And perhaps you’ve mistaken their meaning of invincibe… It means that he’s PHYSICALLY invincibe, not that he is capable of EVERYTHING.

“Seriously: Stop looking at cute females and dig deeper into what you’re watching. Lest you like the idea of having loser parents who gamble too much and are willing to sell you off for body parts. ”

I know what I’m watching *rolled eyes*

No, I don’t like having loser parents who gambles too much and are willing to sell you off for body parts. But that’s not what the show is about isn’t it? Thats just how the story starts!

Just because you dislike that point so much, you’re going to close eyes to all the other parts of the story?!

  30. I can’t believe that a light-hearted, silly gag manga is starting a comment war. … Okay, maybe I can, but still.

    >>Lord Mashymer Says: Well maybe you should stop playing devils advocate and atleast try to see my point of view.

Lord Mashymer, I’d like to ask you to do the same, just so you can see why we’re willing to defend this manga, even those jaded enough not to touch harem shows with a poisoned, sharpened ten-foot pole.

We’re well aware that Hayate isn’t Hemingway, but I think a lot of your criticisms are taken out of context. Criticizing a light-hearted series that doesn’t even take *itself* seriously for its lack of depth is like criticizing an ice-cream sundae for not being enough like filet mignon.

You’re citing incidents from the first volume, which you certainly have a right to–that first impression was bad enough that you’re willing to walk into the Tiger’s Den, so to speak. However, note that those of us who’ve read further know that Hayate actually does manage to live up to the subtitle “The Combat Butler.” He’s accumulated a string of victories befitting any shounen fight-show protagonist, and enough readers are willing to vouch for his abilities.

You mention Hayate’s largest shortcoming in your criticism of him as a character–he’s Dense. Yes, we’ll all admit that he’s not exactly the brightest bulb in the lot, but that’s a foil to his enduring perseverance, fortitude both physical and mental, and general good cheer. He’s actually refreshing in that he’s not a pathetic, indecisive, incompetent loser who only charms women by Plot Fiat.

If you’ve dismissed Hayate because of a first impression that led you to believe that he’s a run-of-the-mill harem lead, then at least keep these examples in mind:
-In an early turning point that underlines how he subverts the typical loser harem lead trope, one chapter starts off with him taking unreasonable physical punishment from a girl (the context being that she’s training him in tsukkomi routines and comedy), he turns the tables on her by goading her into attacking him again, and he deftly dodges out of her way, allowing her to ram straight into a tree. This sort of turnabout simply wouldn’t happen with a stereotypical Beta Male.
(From this minor subversion of the Beta Male trope, Hayate develops into a more and more formidable hero, though obviously not immune to the vagaries of being a character in a *gag manga.*)

    Also:
-He charms one girl (Hinagiku) by besting her in a duel–a patently ludicrous one, but this *is* Hayate, after all.
-He defeats a giant robot, by whipping out a huge machine gun. It was funny, in my opinion.
-He faces off against Other Combat Butlers, all of whom are characters that one would expect from a more action-oriented comic, running with the “Badass Butler” gag.

I could go on, but that would be rambling.

To summarize, I just wanted to say that I feel that your specifically targeted criticisms are unwarranted, or at the very least taken out of context.

Hayate the Combat Butler is at many times absurd, off-the-wall, over-the-top, downright silly, and probably not what you’d want to read if you wanted recycled Cartesian-Philosophy-for-Dummies subtexts, but I feel that Hayate is all the better for it. It is what it is, simply fun.

P.S. I thought about the “snobbish ego” comment. Is it because the author likes to slip in gag references to… just about anything? I don’t think it’s snobbish to have gag depicting a bike going three-times-faster simply because it’s painted red. I just think it’s funny–not enough young’uns appreciate the Original Gundam Series.

    P.P.S.
    >>And I have yet to see a piece of Japanese Animation where a guy blocks or defend himself from an attach from the opposite sex. Successfully.

This is a rather broad statement, though you’d find any fight-oriented show with a female among the opponents or villains would disprove it. And even if not taken as a literal blanket condemnation of the anime format, the source material of a show you cited, Love Hina (by which I mean the manga) actively subverts the trope of the helpless, pathetic lead in the latter volumes. The well-established “loser male,” Keitaro, who is constantly at the mercy of the girls around him, turns the trope on its head when he becomes stronger than Motoko, the preciously nigh-unbeatable kendo girl. I’m not sure if this was technically depicted in the show or OAV, but it still proves that even the Japanese who make these shows are aware of, and are willing to, skewer and subvert these tropes you seem to have issue with.

Oh, my. That was far too long-winded. I apologize for taking up so much space on the comment board.

  31. screw that, if you enjoy it, watch it, if not, then don’t
    that simple~

the fact that you don’t appreciate brainless service doesn’t mean other doesn’t either

the male lead in Touka Gettan is cosing aya rei ~.~
    isn’t that against the rules??!

  32. 803 words. Congratulations!

  33. It sounds like SOMEONE read only chapter one, then decided he was an expert… Sort of how Jack Thompson is a guru of video games. Sayin that Hayate is the same loser harem when haven’t read past – or maybe even through – the
first volume is like saying Cowboy Bebop sucks because it’s just a ripoff of a Spaghetti Western… or that you’re more of a snob than the manga artist, who at least makes no pretenses at being an ‘expert’ as your posturing suggests. You’re doing about as well as a monkey with a ouija board so far, with your demonstrated level of knowledge regarding both Hayate and the history of the genre in general.

You’re related to the former Iraqi Information Minister, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, aren’t you? ;) “‘We are beating the Americans back'”, “‘And I have yet to see a piece of Japanese Animation where a guy blocks or defend himself from an attach from the opposite sex. Successfully.'” – even the Negima manga by the same Akamatsu, has the ‘harem’ lead fighting – and defeating – women.. some of whom are also ‘harem’ members.

  34. Seriously, it sounds like you skimmed the first volume… a Devil’s advocate needs to present a VALID argument, not show himself as an ignorant fool. Act your age, not like someone born twenty years after 1974.

And, for the record, Hayate did NOT duel Hinagiku – he charms her the way he does the rest – he promises to help/rescue them, and then goes off and does it.

  35. And, honestly, who here knows at every minute of every day, what their parents are up to? If they’re out of by sight, I don’t know if they’re meeting Yakuza or if they’re just shopping. Or do YOU go about announcing all that you’ve done when meet someone? ‘Hi there, Mashamyer, I just went out, took a dump, washed my hands, drove to the mall, and sold you to the Mafia to be dissected for your heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver for a lot of cash. Be a good boy and walk outside peacefully and down the street where the organ harvesters are waiting.’

  36. All comments aside, I’m no expert. I’ll be honest with you all on that. But I know what I like. And I’m finding less of that from being an anime viewer. If I move on to another hobby, things here will not change and the creators will get cocky and do whatever they want whilst the uninformed audience allows it.

And still, someone has yet to offer me an anime series where a guy successfully blocks or defend himself from an attach from the opposite sex.

  37. try Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, known for the most pathetic male lead ever, tie with male lead of school days, however, he is very capable of defending himself from catclaws and such

  38. Try Black Lagoon, any shounen action series (Bleach, for example), or ANY other ‘combat’ based show. Hell, even Gundam SEED had Kira blocking hits from people who MIGHT have been part of his harem. You don’t have to look hard for one of those.

Hell, even MAGIKANO (which had the stupidest male harem lead I’ve yet seen) had him defending himself from the opposite sex (although this happened when he’d gone evil). Or look up Negima, as I mentioned – the manga has it happening repeatedly, and I believe the Kyoto arc pulled in the first series had him against a female antagonist.

  39. It’s curious how you listed Ranma 1/2 and then asked for a series where a male is able to defend themselves from the opposite sex. Ranma rarely lost a fight, and when he did, he always won the rematch, which includes his bouts with female opponents. To name a few examples; Ranma and Akane’s first sparring match, Shampoo’s several failed attempts to murder Ranma, and Ukyo’s revenge match. Yes, Akane always managed to land a punch when Ranma really deserved it (though we must remember that she is also a skilled martial artist and not a girl with absolutely no fighting skill, like how it is in other series’ that could be named), but the series was meant to be a “slapstick comedy” from the beginning, and watching Ranma getting punched (by Akane) or beaten half to death (by the entire Nerima mob) is really just meant as a visual gag, but “cartoon violence” doesn’t appeal to everyone, which seems to be your issue here. I don’t mean that as an insult–it just boils down to a difference in personal taste.

Even if Ranma 1/2 doesn’t count in this debate due to the “aquatransexual” factor, it’s easy to come up with any number of other examples. Off the top of my head, from just the series’ that were blogged here at AoMM, Kyon from SHnY evaded a death blow entirely due to his own reflexes, and Yuuichi from Kanon foiled every single one of Makoto’s midnight pranks/attacks.

  40. Jason posted:
“Hayate himself is a cross between Zero no Tsukaima’s Saito and Wolverine. He’s stuck between the wrathful loli that’ll kill him if he lusts after the superior meido, yet he has mutant super healing powers.”

Come on, Jason. All male harem leads have mutant healing factors. How many times did Keitaro take a Naru-punch-assisted sub-orbital flight and walk it off, how many times did Ranma shake of a blow that would have dropped a Hummer, and don’t even get me started on K1 Morisato…

And Lord Mashymer, what’s the deal? You say you’re not a troll, but you come in and start knocking harem-anime conventions on *this* site of all places? This is AoMM for frak’s sake! Where harem won the genre war, all series are Kanon, and all restaurants are Taco Bell. At least give the manga more than one volume and give the series more than an episode before you start accusing the franchise of things that it’s not guilty of, because otherwise you sound uninformed. Namely because you are…

  41. Lord Mashymer… could you show some indications that you’re reading my comments? I’ll have you know I’m addressing your points as directly as I can. This comment board isn’t a place for your one speaker to stand on a soapbox, it’s very much a place of discussion. And one-line shout-outs.

By reading your comments, I think I see where you’re going. You’re not actually condemning Hayate for what it is, you’re jaded and disillusioned with the anime format as a whole. And manga, too, since that’s been closely related for a few decades now, since manga took up an anime aesthetic.

There are two routes for someone who becomes disillusioned with anime and manga. Either a renunciation of the format because one believes it’s formulaic, or the slightly more worldly view: Realizing that just about everything, *Everything* is formulaic, and Japanese pop culture is simply no different.

Television, Movies, Comics, Novels, Games, Music, any form of entertainment will have patterns that the attentive participant will notice. You’ve noticed this in anime, which shows that you cared enough to track the patterns, and I’m pretty sure that your next hobby will have predictable patterns that you’re sure to notice.

    http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/

This website is a surprisingly comprehensive wiki containing various tropes, cliches, narrative devices, and tidbits of information pertaining to various media, including anime and manga. And this site has Proof that the “snobbish anime makers” aren’t as snobbish or as egotistical as you seem to want them to be–they subvert and mock these very qualities you have taken issue with, and this website illustrates when and how they do it.

(Yes, Lord Mashymer, as I’ve hinted, blanket condemnations have a tendency to fall to pieces when scrutinized.)

In reading your comments, I think I see why you think this particular manga artist has a “snobbish ego.” In fact, you seem to imply that you think all creators of anime and manga possesses “snobbish egoes.” Because a significant population among them rely on these tropes and cliches you denounce, you’re willing to condemn the entire industry.

That’s your choice, but I think you’re missing the bigger picture:

Sturgeon’s Law: “Ninety percent of everything is crud.”

Theodore Sturgeon coined it in defense of science fiction, because a critic condemned the genre of science fiction writing as a whole because a vast majority of its works were, lets face it, steaming piles. He countered with the astute observation that, in fact, the vast majority of EVERYTHING is a steaming pile, but it’s the good stuff that counts.

(I happen to think Hayate falls into the “good stuff” category, because the author has a remarkable tendency to subvert, mock, and reference these very tropes and cliches you seem to want to use as justification for condemning his work. Maybe you should take that into account, Mashymer.)

In reading your comments, you seem to imply that you think that the majority of us who frequent Jason’s blog must fall between the 12-16 demographic, because we aren’t as “enlightened” as you for seeing your points. In your eyes, we must all be “uninformed.”

Well, I hope that you realize that not only do I see your point, I go further than that. I’ve learned long ago that trying to make social commentary and trying to find some deeper meaning from innocuous things is counter-productive. What’s worse is… the author of Hayate seems to have made the points you’ve made, but instead of doing it as an attack on the industry in which he works, he makes it into a joke–a joke that we fans, who are WELL AWARE of the points at hand, readily accept with a chuckle and good cheer. And he also makes manga. It’s his job. Don’t be surprised if he plays a manga trope straight–these narrative devices exist because they’re so useful.

I’m pretty sure you’ll skim over my comment and continue on with your soapbox ranting, but I just wanted to say, if not for the AoMM-Reader community as a whole, then at least for myself, that I’ve read your points, Lord Mashymer, and I understand where you’re coming from.

And, since I’ve been aware of these issues for a while now, and I recognize that so are many artists and writers, I can honestly say that your arguments do not move me.

You cynically accuse the anime industry of being snobbish, arrogant, and egotistical. Lord Mashymer, I ask you to consider *my* counter-points and realize the irony of your situation.

[THOUGH I’M SURE THAT MY LONG-WINDED COMMENT WILL SIMPLY BE LOST IN THIS VAST FIRESTORM. IF ANYBODY NOTICES THIS LINE, PLEASE READ MY COMMENT AND NOT JUST SKIM IT. IT’S TERRIBLY RELEVANT TO THE TOPIC AT HAND, YOU SEE.]

I’m sorry for shouting, but I’d like to think that in taking the effort to type all this out, someone might actually read it. And I’m sorry for being so talkative. Again.

  42. Kuzunoha Yukari: And just how many paragraphs are you going to use in order to defend your favorite anime title?

Oh well. You people here win. It’s obvious that I can’t change any minds around here.

  43. Do not feed the trolls. Do tell me what group is fansubbing this series, because I can’t find it.

  44. I gotta say Kuzunoha Yukari, your comments are detailed and succinct. The only reason why it would be long is because you hit each point, provide your own input, and do it all respectfully which is quite a bit more then some. Also they’re quite fun reads.

I’m pretty surprised my simple query to him generated a reply that started this flame-fest, I just wanted to know what he didn’t like about it. Instead the tone of his writing seemed really mocking and everyone jumped into the fray, I only recently checked it and the comments nearly tripled in size, and most likely quadrupled in length.

Also not much I can say in reply to his accusations of the manga, everyone else has already done so and said even more than I would’ve thought. So I’ll just leave it at that.

    >>ubu roi
I believe only the raw is out still, Jason probably reviewed a raw not a sub.

  45. Subs are out.

    Cheers.

  46. SS-Cliepse are my heroes… is just me or we have here a few Occidental-styled animation pop-up (like the angel and devil on Hayate’s shoulders.). is really funny the way they try to tale this episode, with that pervert narrator (sorry, I can’t keep Inukami off my mind thanks to him) and Hayate’s bad luck.

    A promising anime….

  47. hayate iS sex

  48. Well that was interesting.

Let’s break the fourth wall! And again!

  49. The show had me at “I can’t do that for five reasons. First, you’re stupid. Second, you’re really stupid…”

  50. Of the new season 1st episodes Gurren Lagann was the best mix for me. Kamina just owns. Yoko is love.

Claymore seemed promising, but nothing all too exciting as of yet. (great ED though)

Only the santa and angel/devil argument made hayate pass. It just wasn’t entertaining enough as a whole.

About to check out darker than black, heard good things about it.

    Lucky Star commercial was awesome.

    The rest is just so-so…

    muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu…

  52. claymore’s char design was not to my expectation, and it prob end like berserk, with no real ending

hayate(and other 20 moe based series this season) is one of the things that either you enjoy or not lol

darker than black is interesting enough, hope the storyline doesn’t take a wrong turn on ep 3 though

haven’t see rakisuta’s promo ; ; though the first ep airs on sunday

  53. I don’t know if the manga was good
I don’t know if the series as a whole will be good
I just know Norio agreed to be a part of it,
and thats a really good sign.

  54. Hayate isn´t moe driven, i´d rather call it reference driven.

  55. I think the last time I saw the angel/demon-on-the-shoulders metaphor was on an episode of “Tiny Toons”. But this was funnier, and…disturbingly rational – the angel with the peaceful expression on his face suggesting kidnapping as the only sensible option because some minor evils can be overlooked in this world (or something like that).

I just hope the characters don’t go too far down the road of self-awareness where they make multiple comments per episode about “scripts”, “narrators” and “theme songs”. A little of this is amusing – a lot ruins it for me.

  56. >>> Hayate isn´t moe driven, i´d rather call it reference driven.

    Gintama is reference driven
    Hayate is reference driven only as long as people give a damn about it due to moe ^^;

  57. And Mashaymer ignores EVERYTHING everyone else wrote, ignores even his own argument (“I haven’t seen a piece of Japanese animation where the male defended himself successfully from any female”) in order to post the simple ‘You’re wrong’ statement, expecting it to save face or end the argument in his favor, because he can’t counter anything.

Ah… typical teenager tactics. Either he’s a liar, or else he’s a fast food worker, to judge by his ability to handle an argument.

  58. Funny thing is… Hayate’s not even in my top ten lists for manga or anime. I just couldn’t resist the urge to confront every point Mashymer made. It’s the debater’s instinct, it’s the thrill of the fight.

Seeing as how he didn’t even bother to read my post, only commenting on it’s sheer length, I count this as a moral victory. Disconstructing someone else’s arguments has rarely been this fun. I’m just sorry that it had to fill up Jason’s comment-space.

  59. There was kind of a random parody of Black Lagoon in ep 2… is the two shows made by the same studio or are they just poking fun?

  60. they are in fact both made by Shogakukan Productions Co., Ltd.

  61. Hahahha, I thought he looked like Laharl as well (^^) Im really enjoying this anime.
