gundam 00 10

You were my sun
You were my earth
But you didn’t know all the ways I loved you, no
So you took a chance
And made other plans
But I bet you didn’t think that they would come crashing down, no

image

Tears… manly tears… okay maybe not. There was a lot of crying this episode, and for winning in a poor situation, the Celestial Being folks don’t seem to be too happy with it. Maybe it’s because they’re all wound up so tight, when faced with real adversity, they cry that they could not face it down. But, yeah, it’s still disturbing to see so much crying in Gundam… I hope this isn’t the first step to creating Shoujo Gundam.

image

(Honestly, I’m more terrified of this crying being a stepping stone for a Tieria doujinshi where he’s comforted by Setsuna and Lockon. Mmm… *desperately thinking of a way to change the subject*… hey, if anyone has seen the anime promo for Wolf and Spice, yes, I think there’s plenty of fanservice and DFC to be had. The odds I’m dropping Shana to blog Wolf and Spice has been taken off the books in Vegas.)

Points of Interest

image

I’m usually happy when I get one good emo facial distortion in an episode, but, wow, we get two. Louise’s was pretty good, if only because (1) she’s actually wearing something different (2) her argument with her mom was great and (3) Saji and Louise are slowing turning into Yukiteru and Yuno from Mirai Nikki. I can’t wait for Louise to start piloting a mobile suit.

image

Allelujah’s was pretty solid as well… which brings up the following point…

image

“Why are the Gundam Meisters so imperfect?”

Let’s see. You have an idiot 17 year old meister who would do better as a bodyguard in a high school romance comedy, you have a 24 year old meister who hits on the 14 year old bridge bunny, you have a 20 year old meister who has MPD, and you have an age-unknown perfectionist ripe for compete and utter breakdown. And they cry. Like babies. Who ok’ed this mess? Actually, scary enough, I think I might have. It sounds like the perfect combination for a train wreck comedy, but Gundam 00 is neither a train wreck nor a comedy. My gosh. How could this have happened? How would I have miscalculated?

image

I’m making a “Sumeragi ‘how did I miscalculate?'” face. On more rational thought, I think I’ll give it a bit more time. The major source of all of Gundam 00‘s real drama and conflicts have been between the meisters. But, still, it wouldn’t hurt to work in a tsundere loli or real manly man into the meister mix, no?

(I think the male cast of Minami-ke would make better meisters. Mako-cakes, Takeru, Hosaka, and Fuijoka… now there’s a winning team. Can you think of a better four person team?)

image

Wait, so Tieria wears glasses outside of piloting his Gundam, but when he’s piloting Virtue, he either changes to contacts or doesn’t wear them? Did he have time to put on his contacts when Sumeragi scrambled the pilots, or did he put them on in his cockpit when Virtue was launching? Or is he just fighting blind? Or are those fake glasses because he doesn’t want the bridge bunnies to be fawning over his hawt personality and his hawt body? I’m brimming with questions.

image

Hippie Gundam! Or is it Dynasty Warrior Gundam? If there’s ever a Gundam that can transform between two distinct forms, it should be piloted by Allelulah. If there’s ever a Gundam with six forms, it needs to be called Kozue Gundam. Let’s make a pinky swear on that one.

image

Once again, the physics of battle are strictly plot devices. Anemone being able to dodge Tieria at point blank range and only losing a leg was a great show of Jedi-like dexterity combined with the knowledge of a clairvoyance diary holder. Then Kyrios peppered her Taozi with dozens of lasers… never mind that Kyrios were cutting through mobile suits with a single blast a few episodes ago.

image

And, finally, from last time

wp: Hmmm. Isn’t Felt like 14? Does that make Lockon the next Mr. Wong?

Believe me, I was making the “OH MY KYRIOS WHY ARE THEY MAKING MORE GUNSLINGER GIRL?!?” face when I found out that Lockon is 24 and Felt is 14. The only way things could turn out more “only in anime”-ish is if we find out that Lockon is really Felt’s older brother. And since we haven’t seen any of Lockon’s backstory yet, I wouldn’t rule out this turn of events.

IKnight: Philip Pullman has explicitly stated that the His Dark Materials trilogy is the antithesis of the Narnia series, yes. But attempting to control his works like this smacks of the Author-God behaviour which he’s supposedly in rebellion against.

I noticed a very small storm has already started brewing because of The Golden Compass. I was watching CNN, and they were debating whether or not if this is a bad movie for kids because of the religious references, and they had a very conservative and very bald guy on screaming, “THE BIBLE SAYS HOMOSEXUALITY IS BAD! THEREFORE THE MOVIE IS BAD!” The funny thing is that they really stripped out most of the religious references in the movie. The second funny thing is that I don’t remember homosexuality in The Golden Compass. The third funny thing is that this guy might create the world’s most awesome emo facial distortion if he ever watched Gundam 00.

(Ha! And you thought I was going off-topic for a moment there, did ya?)

tidal: seems all the blogs i’ve been visiting enjoyed this episode, but complained how useless sumeragi’s strategy was. Meanwhile, our Russian Bear has developed LuLu complex and starts pwning everyone with superior tactics.

Well, as I pointed out, it’s a classic writing trick to progress the plot with an omnipotent (or quasi-omnipotent) character. You have to manufacture a lot of WATFO moments. Modern Superman really suffers from this. Spiderman is starting to suffer from this. Gundam has long suffered from this. The last two episodes have nothing to do with Gundams or their fighting abilities or their tactics and everything to do with Sunrise needing a way to introduce the backstories for Tieria and Allelulah, and, more importantly, give Celestial Being their first Clubber Lang vs. Rocky fight.

Shadowhawk: This is Gundam, people dodge lasers or “beam” weapons all the time. IIRC, Char said in one of the UC series that you are not so much dodging the beam, but instead figuring out where they are going to shoot and dodging before they shoot.

I think we already beat the laser dodging analysis to death three episodes ago, and Dorian Cornelius Jasper already quote Char. The bottom line is that they are beam weapons. Beams are formed through light. Light travels at a certain speed, which cannot change unless the index of refraction of the material has changed. In space, since it is a vacuum, the index holds steady at 1. No matter how frickin’ good you are at dodging, you are at not out-maneuvering a laser fired by a weapon system controlled even by 21st century microelectronics.

For example, if you can move at 300m/s, which is pretty damn fast, the laser is moving one million times faster. Let’s say that you need to move 10m to get out of range of the laser. Well, then it just becomes a simple geometry problem involving a right triangle, and you’ll need 10 million meters of distance between you and the laser being fired to avoid it. Any closer, and you are toast. (I might be off, did the math in my head.) Laser dodging, in Star Wars, in Gundam, in Robotech, in Battlestar Galactica is just physics-defying fiction.

(I still prefer Laizane’s explanation: if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a laser. It’s not the physics aspect. It’s the sheer comedy aspect. The thought of the various mobile suit pilots lining up and getting nailed in the groin by wrenches never get old. On that note, it would be hilarious if the leader of Celestial Being turned out to be either Chuck Norris or Lance Armstrong.)

Kabitzin: Aren’t you worried that a Haro Gundam would raise the power levels too high?

I’m only worried if Haro Gundam sees Lockon seducing Felt and gets really, really jealous.

Amuro1X: I don’t get why Soma is compared to Anemone. For one thing, I watched all of Eureka 7

Because they look alike? Much like Fuko and Aruru, and Aruru sure doesn’t hand out wooden starfish… for six episodes! Please, Kyoto, tell me there’s an abundance of lesbian fanservice upcoming in Clannad. Please.

A non e-moose?: Forgive me for being new, but what is this Gundam 00P?

It’s the prologue to Gundam 00 and is about the first generation of Gundam Meisters. The current 00 cast is the third.

CBongo: Chii won, so there is evidence to support “robot” as a core moe mode.

I meant robot as a personality type, not as a species type. After all Yuki is an alien, not a robot. If you want to just go by robot, there’s a bunch, including Mahoro and Kurumi, but none of those have a robotic personality. Chii is more of fawning puppy than a robot.

zomglazerspewpewpew: And, I have been wondering, what is DFC?

Yep, these are my… no way… not a chance.

  1. Is it me or did I hear Fukuyama Jun’s voice (Lelouch) from that Wolf and Spice CM?

  2. Jason we have an intruder here…. the person who comes to this blog and doesn’t know what is the meaning of DFC deserve some kind of punishment…

BTW, it is me or that nadleeh looks like Venom from FMP? Damn it, why I still think about those things? Damn you KyoAni….

  3. Yep, you hear right Knowngn; is him, and the girl has Kallen’s seryuu…

  4. No mention of Tiera being a possible reverse trap? (what with him referring himself as “watashi” at the end, and his Gundam’s true form named after a transexual god…)
Hippie Gundam or Dynasty Warrior Gundam? Perhaps a more appropriate nickname could be decided after seeing this picture here:
    http://i63.photobucket.com/alb.....697886.jpg

  5. waitwaitwaitwaitwait. wait.

    14? 14, you say?

    Felt?

    14?

    Uh-oh…

I guess I AM one of your readers.

  6. Mako-cakes, Takeru, Hosaka, and Fuijoka… now there’s a winning team. Can you think of a better four person team?

Sunao, Mudo, Kaoru, and Yasumi. They’re powered by Potemayo. Also, their questionable sexuality would make them fit in quite well as Gundam Meisters.

  7. ^
I’d agree that the potemayo cast is definitely superior

  8. But, yeah, it’s still disturbing to see so much crying in Gundam… I hope this isn’t the first step to creating Shoujo Gundam.

I wonder if it will be anything like Shoujo X-men

And I thought we had a discussion saying Horo was not really DFC.

  9. @ Xeifa
I almost die for laughing so hard with that picture… WTF is that….

I’m agree too with teh Potemayo cast…

  10. You know, I’d love to see a Gundam show with the Minami-ke boys instead of the four meisters. For god’s sake you can stick the male cast of EF in this show and they’d probably come of as more mentally stable and then you’d at least be sure that they are all straight.
Seriously though, this show is pushing it on the matter of mentally unstable men with mecha. I really don’t get who exactly put their team together: I bet they were thinking that having so many people with mental problems together would make them cancel each other out.

  11. I think you will really, really like ep. 10 of Clannad then

  12. A new team to replace the current Meisters…

My personal favorite would be the Agricultural Abteilungen from Moyashimon: Haruka Hasegawa, Aoi Muto, Hazuki Oikawa, and let’s add Kei in for the obligatory trap pilot of Nadleeh. At least with Kei we ensure a steady of supply of liquor for the other three on the cheap. Besides with this team the stupidity levels will reach a dramatic new low and the yuri level a dramatic new high! Powered by fermentation.

It is a huge overhaul, but if the Meisters have proven anything its that male leads are truly worthless compared to the shining paragons of the female gender.

As for Soma’s martial prowess and holding her own against the teary eye-ed Meisters, I think that pink paint improves the performance of her mobile suit. It makes it almost beam proof. I mean after all why would Ms. Wang roll in pink shuttle and Teiria wear a pink cardigan if it were not so?

  13. Once again I have to pop into a blog to say this:

Hallelujah reduced the power on his rifle on purpose to fuck around with Soma. He’s basically saying “I know exactly where you’re going so I can blow you out of the sky whenever the hell I feel like it.” and toying with her since she caused him mental anguish with her whateverquantumbrainwaves.

Of course he was too caught up in being an asshole that she got away and he had to settle with slowly inserting his claw into the cockpit of some throwaway character.

  14. A new Gundam comes!

when Tieria started complaining that it was too early to introduce his gundam’s hidden form, i couldn’t help but think that someone at Sunrise hit the “Wrap It Up” button in the writer’s room.

  15. @ http://i63.photobucket.com/alb…..697886.jpg

Yeah, I was just waiting for that pic to start flying through the internet.

  16. Celestial Being seems pretty broken, though I find it hard to sympathise with them. Which Gundams would the boys of Minami-ke pilot? Presumably Mako-cakes would pilot Indeterminate Gender Gundam (Virtue) . . .

Sounds like The Golden Compass is a bigger issue – or is being made a bigger issue – in the States than I realised.

  17. New chapter of Mirai Nikki… should be out some time this week? I need my monthly dose of psycho stalker love. ;_;

    >>gets really, really jealous.
Get the Xenoglossia team on this and they may save this anime.

    >>“Why are the Gundam Meisters so imperfect?”
I hope for more episodes 7 and 8 in the future. Delicious fanservice must screenshot.

    >>Potemayo
    Lovin’ it.
    [ ]Wraep
    [X]Genuflect.

  18. ah yes xenoglossia. providing the world over with more DFC with mecha. At least DFC is better than Trap.

Hair? on my Gundam? whatever Takayuki Yanase (designer) was smoking when he drew that, it must’ve been good stuff. On seperate topic, i heard on /m/ that the gundam is named after some navajo tradition involving traps (as in Admiral Ackbar trap)

    Questionable….

  19. I couldnt help but bust a gut when at Ms.Sumeragi’s “OH NOES MY CALCULATIONS”

….in before doijins using that plot device when she gets…”touched”

  20. I think the gundam meisters cried because they found their inspiration after watching Brokeback Mountain. So sad…^^

I got a question, if their were/is some version of a hitman/hitmen/black-ops during their era (CIA, RVS, MI-5/6 and others) how come no one put a hit on them when they are not on their mobile suits? It seems pretty easy to give an unfortunate event on even one of the meisters after the setsuna incident. I mean, if the meisters know what to hit and when to hit, how come other opposing factions can’t do it to them? ^^

They should have just made a sequel to Escaflowne…^^

    ciao ^^

  21. Wow. I have so many things to say about this episode. Like asking why there wasnt a “Thats It. Theres no way. I refuse to believe…” line in this entry… I am fairly sure that he looked even MORE girly near the end…

Then again, my watching of it was screwed up. For some reason, my PC has just started to hate 1280×720 MKV files. You know, the type I watch alot of this season in…. It only screws it up when there are a large number of changes between frames… Like when GN Particles are in effect….
Yes. My watching of Gundam 00 is being disrupted by GN Particles…
(good job Sunrise! you raised the realism 10x!)

  22. Lasers and Beams are strong “space scifi” clishes, hardly anything can break that. One example would be Homeworld, even though there ARE ion cannons they are described as very energy demanding and unwieldly, the cannon itself would be bigger than the potemolaeus(?).

  23. “Because they look alike.”

Ah! Superficiality. I had forgotten about that. Pink hair, pink mobile suit. Yeah, Soma is Anemone alright.

If the Kyrios being able to hit the Taozi and not have it get damaged is such a conundrum to you, think of it like this. Like you said, in earlier episodes, the Kyrios was shooting crap down with one shot, but they were all single, accurate shots. The length of the shot can also say a lot about it. When he was firing at the Taozi, it was in short, rapid bursts. Is it so hard to believe Hallelujah dialed down the power to mess with ‘Anemone’s’ head. We saw the guy has a thing for toying with his prey. Poor Ming. And the Virtue missing wasn’t to big a surprise. It was firing big, slow (as in the time in between) shots. I’d imagine it would be difficult to target a maneuverable speedy target like the Taozi.

On a less serious note, I think you’re going to have add the Nadleeh to the fan-service pole. I’d vote for that right away.

  24. Suppose you are standing back ten million meters or whatever. The bad guy fires, and the laser takes 1/30 second (about one animation frame) to traverse the distance. Now we could go into human reaction time and such but we don’t need to. Since you are standing back that far, you CAN’T SEE him firing until the laser arrives, since the light you are using to see it with travels at the same rate as the laser does. Even ten billion meters back, where the light time is 300 seconds, you still can’t dodge by reacting to seeing him fire.

And also, energy bolts clearly do not travel at light speed, are visible from the side in a vacuum, and are therefore NOT LASERS. It would be more reasonable to think of them as plasma bolts or tracer bullets or something. If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a plasma bolt.

I actually like Galactica in this sense. They just use old fashioned bullets.

  25. “Then Kyrios peppered her Taozi with dozens of lasers… never mind that Kyrios were cutting through mobile suits with a single blast a few episodes ago.”

Hallelujah was just toying with her by using a low output on his beam submachine gun (the laser shots were much smaller and fired more quickly than normal). If he could have killed her he would have done so in a heartbeat but Hal doesn’t work like that. He wanted Anemone to feel fear. He loves to watch his enemies suffer as he gleefully taunts them, as we have so delightfully watched him doing that to Min.

    Sadistic good guys ftw.

  26. I was really hoping for Tieria to blurt out “ZETSUBOUSHITA”. That would have made for epic lol.

  27. All this time, i thought that the lasers that Gundams fire were supercharged plasma, emitted at high velocitites. That would explain the speed of the beam, the short burst instead of a line and being able to dodge them.

  28. yea, those things are not lazers,,, they are just super accelerated positively charged high temperature particles. therefore, the particles fired by virtue are of large amount, there they are heavier, thus making them slower and easier to dodge.
btw, I play gundam seed destiny zaft vs the federation II plus, it is easy to dodge buster cannons than machine guns if I base it from there.
And if u look at Kyrios gun, there are two holes, one for the particle gun, and one for the machine gun, and it is harder to dodge fully automatic machine gun then semi-automatic particle gun, Alleluia was just using the machine gun to make fun of Soma because machine guns will have little damage due to her thick armor.

btw, why are u ppl so fond of DFC? I think being fond of the DFC defy the theory of evolution, and how breast was ever created. and what is a “Trap”

  29. Well well, the battle wraps up more or less as expected, but there sure was a lot of BAWWWWWWing going on afterwards. Something I found amusing was how Tieria was pining for Veda after he realized he was a failure. Does he have hots for an AI? Seeing his perfectionist personality, I wouldn’t be surprised…

An observation on the space combat discussion. Since layzer-beemus travel at teh speed of light, and these guys have access to advanced battle computers / sensors / the works, fighting at visual range is actually redundant. There is no need to have a naked-eye lock on the target since your electronic systems are taking care of most everything. This episode’s combat also reminded me that there’s no good reason for the mechas / gundams to use handheld weapons either. Sure, it may be good for some situations to have hands, but weapons should be mounted. Granted, these gundams seem to be hybrids in this regard, both with held and mounted armaments.

Quote of the episode, though only relevant to this blog: “The plans are getting derailed!”

  30. “But, yeah, it’s still disturbing to see so much crying in Gundam… I hope this isn’t the first step to creating Shoujo Gundam.”

Wait wait wait… is this sarcasm or did you really not watch Gundam SEED? My real beef is that the bridge crew are all in spacesuits… 14 or not, you can’t ‘bounce’ around in space suits :(

  31. H/Allelujah has just become my favorite character. Because he snapped first, and there’s something hilarious about the absolutely psychopathic personality having Hallelujah as his designation. CAN I GET AN AMEN!

Also, I was wondering when Virtue would actually do something cool. And that cool thing was become not Virtue. Though it wasn’t much of an improvement (and they keep stealing from FMP, I swear to god, they had Arm-Slaves with ponytails piloted by homo side characters (Leonard Testarossa) first!).

Also, it’s bloody amazing that they haven’t figured out how to use their Gundams to work together. The concepts support each other quite well. Both Kyrios and Exia are good for direct combat, and you allow Dynames and Virtue to hang back and absolutely bury people from range. Yet they’ve NEVER done that. And it would SO work.

Come to think of it, Hallelujah looks like Trowa and, hopefully, we’ll find out he was a clown too.

  32. Those who are crying are the ones who finally realized: They’re in a $UNRI$E anime.

They thought that the show was finally gonna have some actual CONSISTENCY since the “FMA” director is behind it. Boy, were they wrong!

Miss Wang didn’t miscalculate; she just doesn’t realize it yet. Meanwhile, Hallelujah provides one less character to worry about by already snapping.

Finally, this show lacks some serious Shirin Back-There. So it receives a minus point.

  33. Perhaps the sense of scale is off. If you were firing at something very far away, being off by just a small angle would cause you to miss, so pre-dodging lasers would not be as difficult.

Besides, Lelouch has already shown that you can accurately model human attack patterns, and obviously a Haro can do it even faster. The scrubs always die because they have slow legacy Haros and they get that spinning hourglass while they are trying to figure out how to dodge lasers. Meanwhile the good guys are dodging lasers, encoding videos, photoshopping pictures, and playing 5 different 3D games at the same time on their uber fast rigs.

  34. I was really hoping for Tieria to blurt out “ZETSUBOUSHITA”.

I would pay money to see/hear that. From any of the characters, in fact.

  35. Having watched and followed the gundam franchise long enough not to care about people dodging lasers be they actual beams of light or some supercharged mass of particles that seemingly travel at the speed of Roger Clemen’s fastball; I was rather surprised at some of the other inconsistencies in this episode which happened to crop up mostly around the engagement with Tieria.

It kinda started with a “meh, sure whatever” when seeing Tieria’s Virtue get snared. You kinda think that someone who has taken out masses of troops on the ground could move around a bit better in space, but hey, it’s more interesting this way and I was rooting for the HRL the entire time anyways. I suppose things got really hairy when Tieria snaps and unveils his “new” mech. His armor pops off with enough explosive force to push off the tierens holding his shoulder cannons, pelt Anemone’s Taozi into submission, and snap the cables that were until a moment ago enduring the combined strain of an overpowered gundam and 6 pieces of cannonfodder dragging him who knows where. Maybe back to the ship that Mr. Haptism so kindly wrecked (the number of times it was wrapped around him should have made it harder to break too). Still after all that the armor manages to float dramatically in the vicinity of Viritue/Nadleeh. What of the cannons that he uses to blast the Tierens to bits? I think that the two dudes that were holding on to them had the courtesy to toss them back just because they don’t like steali–oh wait they were trying to steal a gundam and perhaps reverse engineer it?

This turned out kinda long…I didn’t even get to mention how they were able to “retreat” from Tieria. Maybe he was too busy crying about exposing his secret to bother chasing the people who saw it? Oh…well. I guess I did. At least now Sunrise has been promoted from gundam thievery to “attempted gundam theft.”

  36. Cyclops is cool.

  37. Heh I agree with teabeans on Tieriea’s blunder, I mean wtf he was so busy QQing that he forgot he could just shoot down those tierens? Well, they probley already sent a pictuer or whatever to base-wait don’t GN particales block communication? I guess sunrise forgot about that small detail.

<< Please, Kyoto, tell me there’s an abundance of lesbian fanservice upcoming in Clannad. Please.

    Mmm your prayers are answered:

  38. >> Saji and Louise are slowing turning into Yukiteru and Yuno from Mirai Nikki. I can’t wait for Louise to start piloting a mobile suit.

It works! A godlike entity gives them uber devices, and the only way you can stay alive with your uber device is if everyone else with uber devices dies! What I wanna see is Louise with the Gundam Icepick.

  39. Aw…lasers again? So lame-O ^^

from what I can remember in my high school/college days, laser is classified as a form of “particle” light (correct me if I’m wrong but the only forms of light forms are the particle/quanta and wave right?). Whatever forms it is, we can safely assume that it is moving at the speed of light since it is light by itself. Disregarding the distance, force/acceleration and time itself surrounding the trajectory of the laser, Einstein’s theory of general relativity stipulates that to move at or above the speed of light means your mass will be so heavy that it will achieved a state of inertia meaning it will stop or/it cannot be(?)

Converting it to the Gundam universe, it will suddenly mean that all mobile suits especially Gundam-type of mobile suits are moving nearly or at the speed of light (dodging the laser) which cannot be because their is a finite G’s that a human body can sustain during in motion. Anything higher than what a human body can receive will result in internal organ damage and possible death (in comparison to the motion of real-time fighter pilots of today). The best that they can do is to either absorb the laser (like what they did to a gundam of Char – Hyaku Shiki and Seed’s Akatsuki) or deflect it (like what they did to gundam wing’s Mercurios).

I could probably babble from the SDI program of R. Reagan to the failed Philadelphia project but then again it’s Gundam and it is….Sunrise. What can you expect? Logical turn of events? I hope that it will be a good train wreck in the recent tradition of Sunrise like mai otome, gundam seed and gs destiny ^^

    ciao ^^
