Apparently, 2ch has been reveling in the fact that Code Geass R2 is bombing in the ratings. (Episode 5 got a 0.9 share. For reference, Keroro Gunso usually scores around a 5 share, as did Gundam Seed.) I’m, of course, always ready to help out Sunrise in a pinch.
Top Ten Ways To Boost Code Geass R2’s Ratings
10. Since the plot is train wreck status (and only at episode 5) and can’t be saved, might as well import William Shatner to Japan. Once the Japanese are flooded with Priceline commercials and Rocket Man performances, hopefully, Area 11 will learn to appreciate unintentional comedy as much as we do in Britannia. Then as long as Code Geass R2 stays train wreck, it’ll gain more popularity.
9. “Code Geass R2 episode 9: Truck Party, guest starring Stephen Marbury.”
8. Lulu’s next step in taking on the Britannian Empire is to commence Operation Cozy Family. He and C.C. will get “married.” Rolo will pretend to be the 3 year old assassin. Shirley will be a former abuse victim. Toudou will dress up as a lion; Diethard the okama. Kallen will be the omnipotent jellyfish. Of course, Suzaku will counter with his Britannian Meisters.
7. Instead of trying to appeal to 14-35 year old men, try to appeal to 14-35 year old women. Get rid of all the ridiculous ass and boob shots and replace them with ridiculous BL shots. OH GEASS NO!
6. Lulu and C.C. spend 5 episodes giving out wooden starfish.
6. If ratings don’t improve, try to make up the revenue by further product whoring placement. Lancelot and Guren Nishiki could be decaled out like a NASCAR entry. The Knights of the Round could counter C.C.’s Pizza Hut by getting a Roundtable Pizza sponsorship. Lulu could get three more “brothers” in Mr. Goodbar, Snickers, and Skor.
5. A Miss Pizza Hut contest with the champion winning a lifetime supply of Pizza Hut Pan Pizzas and a Cheese-kun trophy. Hilarity, cleavage, bullying, and bunny girls ensue as C.C. enters, with Kallen joining to stop her, and Shirley and Millay joining on a bet. Suzaku then enters Anya as a spy. Lulu also joins the contest when he finds out that Nunnally will give the winner a kiss on the cheek.
4. Table humping! (Did Cartoon Network censor Nina’s greatest moment?)
3. Lulu’s voice slowly changes, and, oddly enough, he sounds like Mamiko Noto. He’s too busy evading Kallen’s constant dry humping as well as a concurrent assault by a suddenly DFC C.C. to overthrow Britannia. Or we could do… Lulu’s voice slowly changes, and, oddly enough, he sounds like Mamiko Noto. He’s too busy evading Suzaku’s constant dry humping as well as a concurrent assault by a suddenly DFC Rolo to overthrow Britannia. I think either scenario would help ratings.
2. Hawt lesbian fanservice. Or at least as much hawt lesbian fanservice that 5PM JST will allow. We need a new go-to hawt lesbian fanservice couple now that Lion-chan and Sayako’s DS-crushing ass has been removed from considerations. I vote for C.C. and Kallen.
1. “Don’t worry, Master. Overthrowing Britannia is trivial to me. Kukuku. Maid Guy Rebellion!”
How are the ratings bad? This is one of the best shows this season… must need more maids…
1st?
Didn’t we already conclude that after season one the story was so shot that there was no way to save it? im not the least bit surprised the ratings are taking a hit…
And lesbianism is terrific any time of day…. don’t let 5pm deter you!!!!
What Code Geass R2 really needs is a little more Fuko. I got to have more Fuko. I got a fever and the only prescription is more Fuko.
>>Lulu’s voice slowly changes, and, oddly enough, he sounds like Mamiko Noto.
I literally burst out laughing at this. Since Noto is typecast as voicing lesbians it’ll go great with number 2… but wait, if Lulu becomes a lesbian he’ll be more straight than he is now, thus canceling out 7.
You have a problem if Suzaku is considered the most “GAR” of the show. The fact he is second in this poll suggests that there is a lack of hot blooded Kamina this season. Your poll makes me sad. I voted for Jil, full knowing he spent half an episode with boobs.
Also, to improve ratings? SHOW SOME BLOOD. I hate this 5pm JST. A new plot would be good, too, instead of re-using last season’s plot. Was awesome for the first ep or two, now is tiresome. Is there a writer’s strike going on in Japan or something?
You forgot to add “talented writers” to the list.
#5 works for me though.
2, hawt lesbian fanservice can fix anything… Well, in fact, with hawt lesbian fanservice no one cares anymore about fixing anything, and thats good. :)
1 can be good too.
And 11, They can put as villain Setsuka, le petite Illpallazo, bring a lot of ero-zombies, a half naked squad of combat waitress, a loli-magical girl and her partner, a melonpan-magical girl…. no, wait… that´s already done.
Who cares, I want moar. :D
I loled.
>>The Knights of the Round could counter C.C.’s Pizza Hut by getting a Roundtable Pizza sponsorship.
Or they could become The Bobby Knights of the Round and start putting advertisements on their clothing.
The beatings will continue until
moraleratings improve! I think improvement #1 would be the most effective – maids make everything better, and Maid Guy would doubly so.Hmm… pizza. Yes, I definitely want some pizza today.
“What Code Geass R2 really needs is a little more Fuko. I got to have more Fuko. I got a fever and the only prescription is more Fuko.”
Dozo, Have a Gunshot Wound! *shoots Bruce Dickinson*
I vote for the old time slot. Because that means More Blood, Hawt lesbian fanservice, and Table Humping will all be able to return…. so will OH GEASS NO moments, but thats the price…
Really what they need is a new timeslot.
i agree the old time was the best, all the new time brought us was more fanservice (that is tone-down) and less boodly death
i mean since it got train wreck status might as well make it more bloody, more destruction, more death (then possible), fanservice (kanokon style) and have people protest about Table-kun rights!
11. Sunrise crossovers! Britannia hires Spike and Jet to track down C.C., Suzaku’s next mech upgrade is a Gundam, and Sgt. Keroro usurps Lulu as leader of the rebellion.
I don’t believe that anybody should joke about this anymore. It’s over for Code Geass.
I’m the faceless soldier in Equilibrium; shooting these dogs and putting them out of their misery with my shotgun.
How about people wait for the ending before they go on about how bad the show is?
Timeslot is probably the biggest problem for them considering despite the fact that last season trainwrecked it still managed decent ratings for the timeslot and the show’s DVD sale were very high.
Kind of suprising that CG:R2 isn’t doing well. Though comparing it to KG is unfair since not only do kids watch it so do all the hikikomori, otaku, and Densha Otoko wannabe.
It is also possible to blame the timeslot, while fanservice shots have been increased there is less of the O-G-N moments. But maybe 5pm is just a bad time for it’s target audience, the Otaku do have to work to support their crazy addictions.
¡Sunrise crossovers! That´s a good idea!
A dimensional portal opens, and an army of Meisters overrun de Geass Universe. With Shizuru on the lead… what means of course hawt lesbian fansevice, and lots of meidos.
Quickly, lets call Sunrise!! :D
Damn it, we need some romance… it doesn’t matter teh couple.
I think number 1 is all we’d need to absolutely demolish all further ratings problems. The only problem is, after Kogarashi overthrows Britannia in two (maximum three) episodes, what would Sunrise do for the rest of the season?
“I could go for a good ol’ American cheeseburger!”
**next scene: Burger King**
Wolf General: That’s easy – he then does in the Emperor, whose plan to off Naeka was the reason he was assigned in the first place, then Fubuki has to beat him for a while as he’s gone too far and blew up Ashford Academy. After that comes the harem series, and Kogarashi has to keep the guys off Lelouch.
Wow Code Geass was around 3.8% in epsisode 3, then dropped to around <2% in episode 4 and now this??
Haesslich: A show full of OH GEASS NO and Awesome Kagarashi Moments, together? Hell, I don’t even know what I’d classify that as…but it must come to pass.
If he gets to keep guys from groping or making OH GEASS NO moments with Lelouch, it shall be.
I’ll take a number 3(a), a number 5, and a number 10, with an Orange-kun substitution for for bonus laughter.
In response to number 2, we have Candy Boy now. (yes this is a blatant attempt to get Jason to blog Candy Boy).
I’d like to see someone post ***official*** ratings figures for episode 5, but so far no such luck. Still, whatever, they’ll be out in time to confirm or dismiss this stuff, so let’s assume it did get 0.9%.
I do wonder how the figures will look like after episodes 6-7, outside of the whole Golden Week crap which may have somehow affected this show’s crappy Sunday afternoon slot, but I guess it won’t exactly be a huge increase, if anything. No miracles, so a 1.5-2.0% is about what I’d hope for.
Honestly though, too many things beyond the show’s quality are hurting its ratings.
Code Geass didn’t get a decent (daylight) rerun in the Kantou region, which is where the ratings you see online usually come from. Not surprisingly, the Kansai region apparently had a rerun of the first season in the afternoon, before Gundam 00 showed up, and R2’s ratings are much better there.
R2’s being a sequel to a graveyard timeslot show which was a hit -but only among otaku and NEVER in terms of television ratings- pretty much spelled out that trying to make it a primetime contender for the mainstream was a poor idea, especially without a decent rerun for casual viewers.
Sunrise and the broadcasters should have just been content to keep Code Geass at the current Macross Frontier slot and showcase that instead, which has a popular franchise name behind it and more growth potential. Even though I’m not watching it (too much stuff), I can at least tell.
The otaku are still watching R2 and posting about it like mad, so it’s pretty dumb to claim that Code Geass has “lost” appeal or popularity. No, that’s not the point. The problem is that the show has not GAINED much (if anything at all) in terms of mainstream popularity. The ratings for season one were also very low, although a bit more stable.
So no, the show hasn’t “taken a hit” because of its real or perceived “trainwreck” status, since the first season didn’t exactly get consistently GOOD ratings, even when it wasn’t a trainwreck. How many of you know that, I wonder? It average 2.0% or so, with many 1.0%-1.5% in between, which is pretty damn low and not that far from episode 5’s assumed 0.9%, give or take a couple of points for margin of error.
The real test of the R2’s “popularity” among otaku, not the mainstream, will be the DVDs. If those sell like they did before, or even better, that closes the entire issue and some of you will like rather…awkward. If they don’t, only then would it make send to talk about the show “taking a hit” or whatever.
Finally, moving “doroku” to “nichigo” was a pretty dumb idea as well. Competing against Major would have been bad, but there was NO anime on that Sunday slot. Trying to con casual viewers to tune into a new time slot requires some that they’ll find attractive, not an otaku show. Gundam 00 should have been moved there instead, for its first season..but now I can imagine it going back to Saturday, because of R2’s bad ratings.
>>In response to number 2, we have Candy Boy now. (yes this is a blatant attempt to get Jason to blog Candy Boy).
Seconded. Passing up yuri twincest with a side order of stalker is poor form.
@ Haesslich
You’re forgetting the crucial piece of pre-existing evidence: What Kogarashi did to Naeka in regards to her love-letter affair. He wouldn’t be keeping the guys off of Lulu, He’d be building Lulu a personal Harem building with two wards: One for the women, and one for the guys, both fully equipped with love beds and anything else they could ever desire.
Hehe….spending 5 episode to giving out wooden starfish sculpture is really a good idea…why slash it??haha
The real rating for R2 episode 5 was 1.8%, which is still extremely low but not quite as ridiculous as 0.9%.
Will you fix that flawed information, I wonder, or are rumors superior to facts?

Sunrise crossovers? It’s been done as a card game:

No. Just. No.
The only thing saving code geass is time travel back to the first season, a gun to whoever came up with plot’s head and a huge list of changes. Right now, Code Geass is in fact so bad that no amount of story re-working as of right now could possibly make people forget how bad it was in the beginning. There’s so much negative legacy that it has no hope. Even turning it to straight up porn wouldn’t boost its rating.
Okay, correction: turning it into porn would boost its rating but that’s because no one cares about the story anymore. And considering the number of fanservice shots, it’s not like they aren’t experienced at drawing the stuff.
Clearly, the 5pm timeslot doesn’t work. Hikkikomori, after a night playing games, don’t get up till 6pm on a sunday!
“Suzaku then enters Anya as a spy” – Why did I have to re-read this so many times? XD
Apperently last weekend was Golden Week. Considering the vast majority of Code Geass’ ratings have been from Male 20-34 year old (according to that animesuki thread quoted above), this explains a lot. I would imagine that a lot of young males would use this time to travel or at least go out and have fun as it is the longest and busiest travel week in Japan, especially on a Saturday early evening timeslot.
“Suzaku then enters Anya as a spyâ€
……
Jason, you really need to start paying attention to your sentence structure. The past few posts have had sentences which don’t make any sense/hard to read.
Are you having a burn out or something? It can’t be easy having to churn out funny articles after funny articles everytime.
Skribulous: Heh. We’ll see.
talam: You say that as if the first season had received good ratings when, in your opinion, things were better.
Not really the case, actually.
The first season’s average rating was about 2.0%, which means that most of its ratings were within the same range, pretty much, as those for R2 right now. Plenty of 1.0-2.0% in there, with a few exceptions that R2 will probably also have.
But don’t let that stop you from trying to imagine something else, I guess.
Is this a bad thing when this was exactly I was thinking?

Needs MOAR TABLE. Let’s face it Code Geass was a mediocre show no-one was talking about until that moment, which was the first O SHI- moment of the series.
6. Lulu and C.C. spend 5 episodes giving out wooden starfish.
Epic Win
XXX: Sorry, I should have been more clear: to the BEGINNING of the first season, sometime after the first episode. I already knew that the first season was horrid, but it had some form of potential during the first few episodes.
I really must say; R2 isn’t as good as the first and I’ll lose enough interest if it stays this way… Maybe C.C. and Kallen should start a Drama Club or something…
