Typical teenaged boy fantasy overload. Wait, so I get to pilot a transforming ship and have two top tier girls hot for me while I save the world?! All while wearing a ponytail? Pinch me.
A plethora of great Ranka-puppy is cute moments this episode. Watching her try to tell Alto that she needed to go to the bathroom was as riveting as watching Tsukasa text message.
Reminded me of someone else.
“Alto-kun… if you stare at me with such serious eyes… I… I…”
Now this is a show with a killer seiyuu cast. Megumi Nakajima just nails the role of Ranka, and it’s almost as impressive as Maaya Sakamoto debuting on Escaflowne. I thought that Yuichi Nakamura did a fitting job with Alto until I got that previous “if you stare” line in my head. Now I worry that Fuko is going to intervene in her interstellar wooden starfishship. Aya Endo as Sheryl has the worst VORS (Value Over Replacement Seiyuu) of the three. I keep thinking that if Maaya Sakamoto had Sheryl’s role, it would push Macross Frontier up at least half a grade. I really have no clue why Maaya sings Triangular, wrote Aimo, yet has no speaking role. Are they saving her to voice the queen vajra? That’s the only scenario that I would accept.
(There’s so many things right with this eyecatch, I don’t even know where to begin.)
In Soviet Frontier, the haremettes watch you.
This scene cracks me up for some reason; it must be the Klan. This series really didn’t need any other characters besides Sheryl, Ranka, and Alto– they’re strong enough to carry the load. I do cringe whenever Cathy’s on-screen. She’s a horribly unnecessary wet blanket.
Klan, you’re coming close to earning a Rukia All-Star invite.
Utterly, completely, batshit insane. I approve!
Wow. Best fighter-to-fighter combat that I’ve seen in a while. Too bad Alto got owned.
The Protoss fleet is warping out. I think we all know where Frontier is headed. The previous Global fleet was research and creating these Vajra, and it got out of control. Now, LAI and other conspirators of that original plan, either want to destroy all evidence or advance the plan beyond the original intentions. And, of course, Ranka is somehow the key to this plan.
What I don’t get is if Grace wanted Ranka to be here, why did she protest so much about Sheryl coming here? If Sheryl didn’t go to do this concert, then Alto would not have gone to escort her. Instead, he probably would have gone to Ranka’s debut concert, and that would have been that. While you could argue that if Sheryl didn’t come, then Ranka would have came, I would argue that it’s a crapshoot. They could have sent someone else especially since Ranka already had a big concert scheduled (which, now, is down the tubes). There’s just too many coincidences that needed to happen for these events to take place.
Hopes and dreams! Hopes and dreams!
(Which one is “hope”, which one is “dream”?)
At this point in the episode, I thought Ranka knelled over because her tummy hurts. Remember, she ditched Alto to go use the bathroom, except as soon as she left, she got kidnapped. So she’s probably been holding it all this time.
Ranka will probably make it to her debut concert.
I mean, she’ll likely be singing less and destroying everything that her fans know and love more, but they’ll just think she’s yandere.
People love yanderes, right?
>> People love yanderes, right?
Just give me a knife to the gut! I can take it!
You know what would be funny. If an alien fleet tried to use their version of the Minmay Defense against the humans. And if it worked.
didn’t the aliens in macross 2 have something like that where their alien pop star would sing to drive the trops into breserker mode and negate the minmay defense?
It looks like Ranka’s Mother is voiced by Sakamoto Maaya.
Nice ep overall, really liked the dog fight scenes, but to see the Macross used as nothing more than an incubator ala Aliens especially after the kind of plot potential it showed at end of ep 12 kinda makes me sad =(
All while wearing a ponytail? Pinch me.
I hope you were joking about having a ponytail being a typical teenaged boy fantasy Jason.
Who exactly are you wanting to pinch you?
Actually Jason, Ranka’s mom WAS voiced by Maaya Sakamoto — helps when one is anal enough to read through the cast list at the end of an episode…
>> People love yanderes, right?
I think Sheryl is more of a yandere candidate than Ranka.
>> It looks like Ranka’s Mother is voiced by Sakamoto Maaya.
Hence why I wrote “vajra queen.” Think about it for a sec.
… and Maaya Sakamoto was a Zentradi songstress, or at least a half-Zentradi one. Like mother, like daughter?
And I love how, when Mikhail things of ‘obstinate women’, he immediately brings Klein’s face to mind. Between that, and the trappy shots of Alto (I swear, he’s prettier than Miss Macross is)… it’s definitely a modern anime. Traps, tsundere, lolis, busty women, and the entertaining sorta-psycho (Grace); it has everything.
PS: For everyone who voted “No” on the poll, can we tag them as compuslive liars, who deserve to be Vajra food? ;)
I’m assuming all my female readers are voting “no” while shaking their heads. But 25% seems to be waaaay too much female readership for this blog.
Myssa Rei’s female, but she too broke, so I’d have to say that those people who voted ‘no’ are all liars to a man (and maybe a few women), thus deserving the tender mercies of someone like… oh… Sekerei. And To-Love RU. Until their eyes bleed… and their brains dribble out their ears…. ;)
Now this is a show with a killer seiyuu cast. (quote)
don’t forget Aya Hirano as the science officer bridge bunny (i think that’s her job any way the first i noticed her voice was on a gate out sequence and i was like “que? am i watching day of Sagittarius or macross?”)
Awesome. This is a Anime that I sit down with a nice meal at dinner time to enjoy. High point of my entire week, seriously.
I wonder what Deus Ex Machina will save Alto the next episode. I swear, the boy’s got more DEM’s backin’ him up then a Gundam episode. I actually am starting to miss anime’s where my main protagonist is just a badass by nature and doesn’t need DEM’s, because he/she IS a walking Deus Ex Machina.
Watching Alto (starting to seem like a prettier EFG) TRY and protect his girls is getting painful.
OH, and I voted Don’t Care. Maybe because I’m a registered independent.
>> don’t forget Aya Hirano as the science officer bridge bunny
Also Rie Tanaka as the other bridge bunny.
>> Myssa Rei’s female, but she too broke, so I’d have to say that those people who voted ‘no’ are all liars to a man
How do you break a female with Mako-cakes or Lulu? Wouldn’t that be their natural order? You’d have to break them with meido, I think.
no, you break them with reverse traps, I think. Like Lulu’s Sayako. Or the plethora of Butler Cafes that exist on Otome Road which are staffed entirely by women crossdressing as butlers.
Here’s a question though: Which readers are more broken: The ones who voted “Yes” or the ones who voted “don’t care”? I wouldn’t say those who voted no are liars, I just think that’s how many readers are still in denial.
She was broke with a combination of Mako-cakes, Meido, and the heretic Kyonko/Seitenkan cult.
Kouryuu: Those who voted ‘no’ are the most broken – they just don’t acknowleged it, which makes them worse than those who don’t care (who are mostly sane), and those who are broken (who are on the border of sanity and insanity).
oh nice, global destruction is a must.
Macross being used as an alien nest is swell.
what next?
For the coincidences…
It seems that the fact of Ranka coming to the planet is not a setup, it was only ‘luck’: the plan of Grace probably only adjusted to consider the capture of her. For Grace to succeed the only thing needed was that Sheryl got killed and probably that tension of some sort whas generated (she said explicitly those things in the episode): the successive displacement of the Vajira fleet was already prepared (hinted by the recently erased data) and the ‘dimension eater’ was already ready. Ranka was marked just as a seconday target, an ‘hypotesis’, so i doubt that it was of prime importance for her (or what is really Grace). Alto needing to be here was probably an extra precaution to kill off the only true witness of the VF-27 and his pilot.
Of course the part of killing the main targets seems to be failed and the fact that Grace was scheming was exposed, no good for the schemers apparently.
I knew there was something suspicious with that woman…
>>What I don’t get is if Grace wanted Ranka to be here, why did she protest so much about Sheryl coming here?
I think that she was just faking worry, knowing that a stubborn woman like Sheryl would go to Gallia 4 no matter what.
>>A plethora of great Ranka-puppy is cute moments this episode.
I am surprised you dind’t include an image of loli-Ranka, which is the cutest thing ever!
>>At this point in the episode, I thought Ranka knelled over because her tummy hurts.
Shots of Ridley Scott’s “Alien” came to my mind at this point. I hope to be wrong…
I still think Ranka was intended to act as “control” for the Vajra.
Also much of Grace plot worked, she got the Vajra to attack the Frontier with the only bump of being failing to get Sheryl killed.
And Grace did not get exposed, I think one of the objectives was making the Zentradi think that the 33th Marine Corps was killed by the humans to create tension on the Zentradi/Human alliance (with Sheryl death also serving that purpose).
Macross meets Aliens… Awesome!
This episode was full of all types of awesome. The only thing that would have made it better was if Ranka’s ‘bathroom moment’ was really morning sickness.
Will Louis look like this when she finally becomes some melonpan?
Oh geass yes!
