Greatest recap episode ever?
Most of the episode just recapped the previous 14 from Grace’s viewpoint (evil Inoue Kikuko-voiced Cylon) via some funky Stand Alone Complex-wannabe graphics. But the main draw of the episode has to be the 2 minutes of new footage of Fairy-9 Sheryl and Q-1 Ranka busting out with a spontaneous What ’bout my star? in the middle of a hospital while both trying to outdo each other for Alto’s attention.
Loved how Sheryl instigated this whole mess, but Ranka fought back. And then poor Alto had that overwhelmed “I wish Ranka’s iSlug would ring so I can get away” face. The two most popular women on this floating bioship want to rox Alto’s sox off, but he’s too stuck in typical male harem stereotype mode to take advantage of the situation.
Even better, Sheryl and Ranka start singing together and grinding against each other. What hot-blooded, traditional young man wouldn’t be, uh, hot-blooded about now?
I’m not sure if this is Alto’s “I’m questioning my heterosexuality because this isn’t hawt enough for me” or “What are they putting in the drinking water of this hospital?” face. I hope it’s the latter and not the former. Or is it the other way around?
I enjoyed this recap episode. They mixed the battle sequences with more singing, and it felt like a 24 minute long music video. (And, of course, a potential threesome or just plain vanilla Ranka x Sheryl ending seems even more plausible now.) There’s some plot points that get advanced, but mostly of the Sunrise “Hey, let’s just toss this in at the 22:00 mark for the heck of it” variety. I also liked Ranka’s version of Diamond Crevasse at the end, but I hated how they superimposed dialogue over it. Ugh.
While Grace is making her assent as crazy madwoman, I couldn’t help but notice that she listed that VF-25 as one reason why her plan isn’t, well, going as according to plan as she wants. “Yeah, that 15% extra performance boost from the VF-24 has totally sunk my plans!” It’s not like the VF-25 is a Gundam or a Lancelot or a Gurren Lagann for pete’s sake.
Why does Michael look so much like Tiffania’s overmatched older brother? Must be the pointy ears.
(He should just be happy that Klan showed up to feed him.)

Yeah, Alto’s look of fear, and the reflection of the two girls in his eyes, made the episode. And I think it’s more that he’s not sure how he feels about either, since he has an addiction to freedom and breathing (Ozma would kill him if he found out that Alto and Ranka were rocking the Casbah)… and he has a whole ‘I don’t really get interested in girls’ thing left over from his Kabuki days.
As for Mikhail, I think it’s more the humiliation of being force-fed a dozen apples that has him cringing. The whole “I’m not Horo! I can’t eat another bite!” thing face he’s making there… mmm. Well, I’d kill to be in either Alto’s or Mikhail’s shoes at those particular moments.
PS: Is assigning Brera to follow Ranka more directly meant to make sure Ranka dies on schedule, or to goad Alto on?
Hmm… I kind of expected Jason to talk about the first ever maido appearance in Macross…

What are you talking about?! In my eyes, he displayed all the patience and brilliance of a first class general. First, bringing Ranka-puppy to the frontlines of Sheryl’s hospital room was pure strategic genius. He forced the combatants to face each other head on at a time most critical in their campaigns. Then, Alto, playing the fool and simpleton, forced the girls’ hands with crafty feints into their all-too-obvious ambushes, encouraging the other girl time and again to execute an immediate tactical counterstrike. Once all his pieces were in place and the rival forces were fully engaged, all Alto had to do was watch the event unfold.
And what a sight! Starting with probative skirmishes and numerous diversionary sorties, the two sides, desperate to end their prolonged conflict, quickly recognized in their adversary and equal match. Done with the slight maneuvers and firepower rationing of the struggles past, each side brought only their greatest guns to bear, attempting to definitively top the other. The match rapidly evolved into a full-scale assault on Alto’s heart, where the exchange of withering rounds and intensifying volleys climaxed into bombastic salvos of lyrics and physical innuendo. Alto orchestrated the contest to his will, and his efforts produced a Sheryl&Ranka duet/body rubbing spectacle; a reward richly deserved for designing and enacting such a master scheme. Lulouch, eat your heart out.
The only real misstep was not turning his Galactic Pager off. OTL

Ranka puppy… Ranka….Ranka….. How could you do this to me. I still had my innocent teenage dreams which did not include sheril, now you may have ruined that. How can I forgive you must find a way… This day never happened..
I have downloaded and marathoned all 14 eps yesterday and watched them before work, and the only thing I thought about was I want more Ranka-puppy and less Sheryl, and not my job or whatever else I was supposed to be doing last night. I don’t know, there’s just something about Sheryl. She’s great and all, intelligent and whatnot, but there’s just something about her that makes me just want to push a smile child off the sidewalk in front of an oncoming commuter bus
Would you be giddy or perplexed if the two girls you were having a three-some with broke out in song half way through. I don’t know but that is why this show needs to be aired after midnight.
This episode is yet another reason why I’m loving every minute of this show.

Also she lists two reasons, SMS and the SMS VF-24 performing to the VF-25 levels and I think there is a goof here by someone because SMS uses the VF-25, not VF-24 (that was a prototype to the VF-25).

The N.U.N.S in Frontier use the VF-171 (that is pretty much a VF-17), the VF-25 is supposed to replace it.

She’s also a childhood friend. And he seems to be the oneesama type to judge by his oneesama obsession, not the osananajimi type, which makes
KonataKlein feeding him… awkward. Plus, she’s trying to kill him with apples – look at how many he’s got there, on top of whatever else she’s spooning into his mouth.Poor guy – his ride gets trashed by Sheryl, she goes off to manhandle Alto, and leaves him alone with Klein who’s doing her best to pay him back for all the other taunts while he’s unable to run away. Mind you, it’d be kinda cute – if awkward – to have Klein feeding ME like that… even if she was in Macronized form.
A pretty good recap episode, I’ll give you that. But still not on the level of the Nadesico recap ep.

I love Macross Frontier. Greatest recap episode indeed.
Sadly, this episode reminded me that Sheryl still doesn’t have her own version of Nyan Nyan.
As far as pure recaps go, my all-time favorites are Excel Saga ep 13 and Gurren Lagann ep 16. Gurren Lagann’s recap worked like a “Greatest HIts” episode; the series was all so memorable I didn’t mind at all seeing it again. Plus the music was fantastic and always gets you excited. As for Excel Saga, well, it’s Excel Saga. They both presented old footage in new and fun ways, sprinkling in great fanservice elements.
I guess what I mean is, sure this counts as a recap episode, but the enjoyable parts were the new plot and relationship advancements, and you could completely divorce the recap portion from the new footage and still get a completely new episode (though much shorter than normal). Thus, how I liked this episode was wholly unlike how I enjoyed recap episodes of the past.
If they caught the footage from the mall, I can’t wait until they show this scene on the news.
Ranka and Sheryl by themselves would have caught the media’s attention – but Alto’s a celebrity himself as well.

Its not like I hate one piece dresses on a girl or Ranka for that matter. But honestly when the alternative is the raw sexual magnetism of short shorts (as personified by Sheryl) I think you got to go with your heart.

Alto-hime wouldn’t be broken – he’s never been broken, merely bent by years of Kabuki and playing girls. However, most of the surviving female AND male cast… might be. The Bridge Bunnies certainly are, as is Bobby.

Ahh don’t kill of Ranka I’m pretty sure that’s why I watch the show. I personally think she is the better singer but the duet was pretty awesome as well. They should just go on tour together and have super uber stardom.
