Oh why or why not.
Emo facial distortions! How I have missed you.
(The best thing about Umineko so far has to be the catty fights and in-fighting over the money. Of course, I’m hoping for melonpan and grizzly murders. Though watching old people duke it out just doesn’t have the same impact as the killer lolis… unless Maria comes through.)
I like how Phoenix Wright looks at Jessica the same way Wile E. Coyote looks at the Road Runner.
No, I’m not kidding about the Phoenix Wright thing. I have to keep reminding myself that Umineko is potentially a murder mystery train wreck and not a clever, satirical murder mystery. But I still want to know if 7th Expansion were sitting around playing Phoenix Wright when they came up with Umineko.
(And Battler sounds so much like a Phoenix Wright name… this really should have been a Wright family reunion as opposed to the Ushiromiya family reunion.)
(Though it’s going to be hard to top K1. K1 was just a tour de force of a male lead… I have no clue what tour he was de forcing, but it was a tour de force.)
Is Marina Inoue the hardest working seiyuu right now? By my count, there’s four anime airing right now where she has a major role: Umineko, Valkyria, Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and Hayate the Combat Butler. Or did she acquire a mountain of Hayate-like debt and needs to pay it off before thugs whack her kneecaps?
(Not to mention her recent home runs with Kana Minami and Matsurika. Though she’s trying to have a deeper voice for Jessica, you can tell when she slips up and, when she does, sounds exactly like Kana.)
Meido! I’m happy.
(The freakiest thing about this anime? The voice acting. Rie Kugimiya as the amply endowed, sweet meido? Horie Yui as the wrathful, spoiled DFC loli? What next, Yu Kobayashi using her Mariya voice for Shannon’s creepy twin brother? OH SHI-)
(Of course, since I know nothing about Umineko nor do I care to know anything of it, I’m expecting Shannon to get go stabby, be stabbed, or show up in a red China dress-type swimsuit. I’m down with all three possibilities.)
Alright, at least we know how Maria keeps her mini-crown hat on– a ribbon!
(I was watching this episode to the point where Maria’s mom slaps Maria around and Maria goes into an epic hissy fit… I was thinking, “Well, that’s probably the flag for a really bad ending” and then thought, “Well, at least she seems nicer than Sayoko’s parents…”)
The OP, One Winged Bird, is tremendous. It’s like they drew out a budget for the OP, and then they blew 90% of it on the music and had to scramble for the visuals. Studio Deen just lags behind all the other studios in terms of animation quality, and I’m already wondering how much better Higurashi (and maybe Umineko) would be if another studio had the franchise instead.
(Even more disconcerting since I watched an episode of Canaan before Umineko.)
(And when I watched this OP, I thought I accidentally turned my Xbox on. Maria… welcome to the Rachel Alcuard All-Stars! Gii, get her some tea… with devonshire cream on the side.)
“Gomen nasai. Gomen nasai. Gomen nasai.”
I just hope that when Umineko reboots, they repeat the same actions and same sequence 15,499 times. Except with a completely different wardrobe each time. Oh wait, it’s Studio Deen– the characters will wear basically the same clothes forever, much like Bart Simpson and his trustworthy red T-shirt.
So can we expect your thin slicing soon? In a week or so when you’ve got your fill of first eps?
“Emo facial distortions! How I have missed you.”
.
It was inevitable, Mr. Miao.
I think they blew all their budget animating the tits+asses of the stakes.
At least, that’s what I want to believe.
>In a week or so when you’ve got your fill of first eps?
Uh, could you hold out on doing it after just one episode this time? You never used to but for some reason you did last season and ended up missing out on some shows that really proved themselves awesome following boring (natsu no arashi) and average (phantom) first episodes. Especially considering this season seems to be have very few shows in it anyway.
>> The freakiest thing about this anime? The voice acting. Rie Kugimiya as the amply endowed, sweet meido? Horie Yui as the wrathful, spoiled DFC loli?
USO DAAAA!
I’d kept reading how there’s a reason for the ear bleeding squeals of the loli. All I can say is: I hope she gets killed. Sadly, the op says another thing.
And I support Rosa’s parenting method.
I was seriously wondering if Maria had some sort of mental disorder when she started on the “Uuu” meltdown.
And don’t worry, things get very, very bloody, assuming Deen doesn’t wimp out on us.
So Battler is Wright, does that mean Jessica is Franziska and Maria is a really retarded Pearl? xD
Reading spoilers for this anime is like seeing an incredibly gorgeous trap. I’m incredibly intrigued but true satisfaction is impossible. How can I truly understand it? It doesn’t even understand itself. And I feel like I would need a road map just to figure out what goes where.
Judging by the OP (and what I know of Horie Yui’s abilities), Maria is going to creep us out sooner or later. That toothy grin in the OP is almost enough to creep me out knowing what Hocchan can do with her voice.
Ono D. needs to have Battler go nuts (not unlikely if Higurashi is even a partial pattern) and laugh like a madman….or a Hosaka….same thing.
“Is Marina Inoue the hardest working seiyuu right now?”
Not even close.
Horie Yui’s Maria here, Captain in Saki, the loli mermaid in Umi Monogatari, the lesbian trying to cheat on her fiance in Aoi Hana, the lesbian pettanko fetishist in Kanamemo, the school president in Bakemonogatari. and the straight man in Geijutsuka Art Design Class.
When I heard Maria’s screaming (which sounded to me an awful lot like the titular uminekoes) I couldn’t help but think of that scene from Dumb and Dumber – “You wanna hear the most annoying sound in the WORLD? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH” I was this close to muting it. I guess it had the intended effect.
And hey, now we’ve fulfilled the tiny hat quota for this season!
Is it fate that you are blogging Haruhi and another incarnation of the “No Naku Koro ni” series at the same time?
If you like the anime OP, I think you’ll love the game OP (they got the same girl to sing it). I’d post a youtube link if it weren’t for the fact that I’m in China at the moment.
I’m loving the OP and ED songs for this. OP singer also did a bunch of songs on the Ar Tonelico Hymmnos Concert soundtracks. Good times, good times…
My gods Maria’s voice is Ayu’s, but even worse! And with double the inane catchphrase!
The cast is ungodly huge too…although from the epitaph bit I’m guessing most are destined to be sacrifice fodder.
On topic of Maria. yeah she IS annoying. And you WILL hate yourself later for thinking so, it´s brilliant.
Otherwise, without spoiling anything: It´s advised to have read/watched Higurashi before this. There isn´t any connection between the two series, just references BUT they really play with the audiences expectations based on the Higurashi experience. You´d think you could predict the story but they use that to REALLY screw with you.
Whoa, the Ar Tonelico singer sang the OP? I kinda felt a similar vibe, but I shrugged it off. Her voice is really interesting. The lyrics are fantastic too. Screw the visuals, the music gets me in the mood for slaughterin time.
I don’t see what the issue is with the “old people”. Who hasn’t witnessed a fight over money? An inheritance struggle is a pretty damn good setup for murder, and you can’t do that with just lolis. People need time to build up histories, regrets, debts. I doubt Higurashi would’ve been the same either without the old feuds and cultural issues stirring the pot.
Wait a minute, does this mean we might see a When Jacksons Cry? o_O;; If one or more of the kids has a habit of going hooOOOoooOoo, it could very well happen.
>>Wait a minute, does this mean we might see a When Jacksons Cry? o_O;;
As long as they do it Thriller style and not Neverland Ranch stlye.
It seems “Uuuhh” is the new meme. I just hope we don’t overuse it.
Preparing for total mind screw by epiisode 6.
“The cast is ungodly huge too…although from the epitaph bit I’m guessing most are destined to be sacrifice fodder.”
Didn’t they just kill off like 1/4 of the cast in the second episode (5 people/18 I think)? How is that going to work, or are they going to reboot every few eps Higurashi-style?
The ED is the best ED this season.
This is one of those works I am looking forward to. As someone who has played the games, I can actually follow what is happening.
.
First, I am impressed by the accuracy to the game. Some scenes dont expand things that we really should know, but otherwise its so much like the game. Has some similar sounds (the clock! the clock sounds the same! I expect bloodshed every time I hear it!) and the mid-show eyecatch (shattering glass effect) is pretty much what the game did. The atmosphere of the music is similar – hell, some of it sounds like its either straight from the game’s files, or a redone version…
.
This is hopefully going to be not-to-trainwrecky….
.
>> Alright, at least we know how Maria keeps her mini-crown hat on– a ribbon!
Anime – Slowly decoding the secrets of the universe….
.
>> I was thinking, “Well, that’s probably the flag for a really bad endingâ€
Sortaish….
.
>> No, I’m not kidding about the Phoenix Wright thing.
Is it worrying that the particular cap you put above this is Battler ‘objecting’ to something?
.
>> Emo facial distortions! How I have missed you.
As of episode 2, the Emo Facial Distortion boat will be docking at Rokenjima… please remember to take all gardening implements, icepick-like weapons and rifles with you when you leave the ship.
.
>> The cast is ungodly huge too…although from the epitaph bit I’m guessing most are destined to be sacrifice fodder.
Little tips about the cast. Its about 19 visible in reset 1. It raises to about 30 in reset 2. Reset 3 brings in more… about 35-40, and I havnt finished it yet.
Forgot to add this….
.
>> Except with a completely different wardrobe each time. Oh wait, it’s Studio Deen– the characters will wear basically the same clothes forever
Unfortunetly, you will loose out here. Each reset covers pretty much a couple of days in a Closed Circle. They come into the story at the same time, hence are wearing the same clothes. Its also, its a family meeting, so they are expected to come in their finest threads… which they have.
.
The closest you will get is the other resets should touch upon some happenings from outside the island. I am hoping those scenes are a bit better then the game…
They did explain Bart’s T=Shirts though showing he only has a massive wardrobe of nothing but red t-shirts and blue shorts, maybe the characters here are the same and really how much clothing could you bring on that boat none of them had freaking suitcases
