south park 196

Because writing “katagatari 3” would have been just too boring.
(I like the Brood War and Diablo covers in the back.)
I loved this episode of South Park, and it made me wonder about three things. First, is South Park funnier for an average American than Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is for an average Japanese person? They both poke fun of social ills (or perceived social ills), but South Park goes much more in-depth and goes much more sensational than SZS. Also, the sight gags in South Park are much better done… like seeing Butters with the banzai tree in this episode. They both also feature a running gag… and I must say… Kenny’s death in this episode has to be one of the top ever. On the flipside, I cringe whenever I see the “Zetsubou da!” sequence… especially in a Shaft anime other than SZS. (Why? Oh why did Ararararagi had to do it?)
(But I was very disappointed we didn’t see Marv Albert, Larry Craig, Jesse James, Mark Sanford, John Kerry, Calvin Murphy, Antonio Cromartie, Kobe Bryant, Hugh Grant, Eliot Spitzer, Jessica Simpson, or Quagmire in this episode. And, most of all, they didn’t trot out Chef’s corpse! Come on, he was just a sex addict controlled by a wizard alien… they made him do those things!)
Second, celebrity sex scandals are deliciously entertaining. It doesn’t matter if it is Tiger Woods, Larry Craig, or Charlie Sheen. We love our celebrity sex scandals… I’m not sure why, but it’s all the juicy gossip mixed in with the train wreck crash of a major celebrity. (It’s so much better than white text on a bright orange background.) I think that’s what makes them appealing. It’s like watching the Nunnally slave girl on a float with Suzaku penetrating Lulu scene, only with a recent Emmy winner as Nunnally, a TLC show host as Suzaku, and a tattoo artist as Lulu. Unfortunately, as an anime fan, this is probably the last plot device I’d ever expect in anime. I mean, considering the fanboy rage generated by Kannagi, I doubt we’ll be seeing a plot a la Keiichi get caught banging Chihiro. (Oh wait, this assumes he’s gotten to first base with Belldandy. Scratch that example. Bad job by me.)
(Biggest revelation? If it’s revealed that Asuna has been sleeping with Heathcliff in Sword Art Online. This would cause a bigger book burning than the Salem witch hunt.)
(On a different note, have you seen this video of Aya Hirano at a Japanese football game? I’m not sure what I enjoyed more… her cheerleader outfit, her play-by-play in the Haruhi voice, or the wobbly passes that the QBs throw. Needless to say, I don’t think NFL teams should spend a lot of money scouting these Japanese players. I also enjoyed how empty the stadium looked. But I do want Aya working March Madness next year with Gus Johnson. That’s my March Madness dream team.)
(Oh, just for the heck of it… why did I just find out about this now?)
Lastly, it’s been almost half a year since Elin attacked Tiger’s SUV with his golf club… and we still don’t have a Tiger Woods-based doujinshi harem game? How could this be? I feel like the South Park guys should have turned Tiger Woods 2010 into an harem game rather than a brawler. Imagine a harem game where you have to balance golf with a waifu while trying to discreetly have a harem on the side. This might even be better than Tali’s sex scene in Mass Effect 2. At the very least, can we replace U1 with Tiger in Kanon? Then the Tiger/Akiko/Nayuki ending just might be possible.
(Oh– better idea! Replace Sasha with Tiger for Seikon no Qwaser. Get by my life my lost my love…)
Rather than in-depth, I’d say that South Park is just very direct. Whereas in SZS they often mention celebrities or current events in a very roundabout way, in South Park they just show Tiger Woods or whatever celebrity they are poking fun at. In SZS they usually make fun of social ills in general, while in SP they don’t refrain from mentioning names.
Secondly, South Park is more relevant to the present. Whereas SZS is often adapted from a manga chapter published years ago, a SP episode is usually made within a few days.
Thirdly, many SZS references are obscure to western viewers, whereas even though I’m not American I usually get most references in SP because the United States is very influencial.
Lastly I wouldn’t really enjoy a harem game with Tiger Woods… way too creepy!! Though a fighting game would be fun
Unfortunately, Kumeta gags do beat around the bush a bit, particularly when you’re faced with dissecting funny out of each line of 16 in a panel no larger than 1/8th of a page in Magazine. Or on one bloody frame.
I’m not fond of celebrity scandals because I can’t keep up with “celebrities” at the rate they appear and vanish. I watch almost no tv or movies. Thanks for the Haruhi football, though.
So… you’re telling us you want Nice Club? (Or Nice Car, whatever floats your, uh, boat.)
I think it was a nice SUV.
Don’t really care about SP. Came here for http://www.moetron.com/2010/03.....announced/
Can’t wait to read you post in September :D
The image reminds me that I downloaded the South Park version of Poker Face to play on Rock Band. xD
Unfortunately this episode wasn’t too good outside of the sex-addicts anonymous scenes and the Tiger Woods video game. Loved how Stan kept finding new secrets in the game, though.
So, Mirai Nikki anime, huh? Well that’s one five-tool project down. Hopefully KamiNomi is next. I needs me some animated Kami-niisama.
“I can see the ending”.
Mirai Nikki is being made by Asread……….. *goes to cry in a corner*
Mirai Nikki animated? Sweeeeeet!!!
And by the way, both SP and SZS are awesome.
jason on hiatus again
Just waiting for Mio.
Only five days since my last post…
I don’t see asread doing so badly for that reaction.. while their past exploits might seem like they’re not quite suited for Mirai Nikki (Minami-ke, Shuffle, Kiddy Grade…etc) their animation isn’t that bad compared to others out there, and in the end, it could always be worse.
After watching episode 200, I feel like I am being trolled again.
