#8: Minami-ke Okaeri
“With your flat chest, how long are you going to continue cross-dressing?”
Also wins for 2009:
- Best Mako-cakes Being Mako-cakes
- Best Hosaka Being Hosaka
- Best Kana Minami Being Kana Minami
- Best Haruka Minami Being Amazing
First ever anime to score three straight Best of Top Tens and the real non-joke #8 of 2009. I think it’s a tribute to both how broken everyone is on the show, and how much I enjoy their broken selves. Now this third iteration brought along its own quirks but still doesn’t measure up to the original Minami-ke. (Honesty, what does?) What does Okaeri have going for it? It got rid of the annoying neighbor kid Fubuki, for one. It focused more on what makes Minami-ke great: Mako-cakes, Hosaka, and Kana. (Still, nothing’s perfect… less Haruka fanservice and no Bible Black faces.) It introduced The Curry Fairy as well as backup waifu Hitomi.
Besides that, it’s the same old winning Minami-ke formula: low calorie slice-of-life comedy that focuses on the lives of three very entertaining sisters. And their very, very, very, very broken friends. I wish I could put Minami-ke in the top ten every year, but, alas. This might be it. Goodbye, and thanks for all the Mako-cakes.
Seriously when are you getting rid of the white background, my eyes are starting to bleed.
I couldn’t even finished watching the second season, it was just unbearable…
The original though is great nothing else to add.
Man that show was one of the best comedies since Azumanga
I wish there was a sequel with a plot that advances further through time.
All things Minami-ke are welcome. A lot of people hated both sequels but I found them quite entertaining anyway.
I was wondering when you’d get to this show. Especially with Mako-chan and Haruka and Hosaka being Hosaka. I wish Doumu’d been kept for the art, although Asread spent a LOT of time on Mako-chan towards the end…
Best not-creepy-at-all smile. (Natsuki). Not creepy at all.
Yeah, yeah, Mako-cakes was great, everybody’s broken, Hosaka is win…
But enough of that. They just announced your runaway frontrunner for number one for Best of 2010.

It doesn’t stand up to the original though – there were a couple of great episodes (curry fairy tops it), but they were rather buried in a large number of humdrum episodes about Chiaki’s boring friends.
Whoa, just saw quigonkenny’s link. This fills me with terror about the studio involved.
#8? This was the worst sequel i can think of. =/
Cyruz: so you LIKED Endless Eight?
Haruka’s looks + Hosaka’s visualizations/narcissism = Yamada from B Gata H Kei.
Why are there two #8 spots?
Unless my eyes lie to me.
