#7: A Certain Scientific Railgun
“Onee-sama!!!!!”
Also wins for 2009:
- Best Female Bromance
- Best Useless Character(s)
- Most Electric
- Second Best Four Female Friend Ensemble Cast
I couldn’t stand Index. She was, by far, the weakest link of A Certain Scientific Index. She is the Christian Laettner of the 1992 Dream Team. Got rid of her (completely), focused more on Biribiri (who I enjoy) and Kuroko (who deserves her own spin-off) and toss in Uihara and Saten (both likable characters)… well… that’s a great four female friend ensemble cast. I feel like they should start a girls band and move into the Hidamari apartments. (Kuroko, of course, on keyboard.) I enjoyed their interaction, and I enjoyed all the silly little moments, from Kuroko’s affections for Mikoto to Saten’s Jessie Spano-like downward spirl from the Level Upper to Mikoto performing a duet with Nodame. This series also featured some of JC Staff’s best animation production work and had two awesome OPs from fripSide.
Railgun has been entertaining, and I enjoy how it deviates from Index‘s continual arc-after-arc style. It breaks up long arc with character stories, much like Ghost in the Shell SAC 2nd Gig (which used the Individual Eleven to bookend stories about each Section 9 member), and makes situations where it’s not always black and white. The road to hell is paved with good intentions… and electric fields.
“The road to hell is paved with good intentions… and electric fields.”
and brimstone so I’ve heard.
nice post ^_^ found the most useless award a bit harsh though hahaha.imo, Index just didn’t stand out as much as the awesome four female ensemble of Biri biri, Kuroko, Saten and Uihara
I was under the impression that a lot of people actually *disliked* Railgun after episode 12.
The amount of filler stuff after episode 12 was a little much, but the ending arc was definitely up to par. Might have been better as a 17-18 ep show or something.
Also the cast chemistry for Railgun is infinitely better than Index. Probably on account of it actually going through *buildup* and not just being dropped on you out of nowhere.
This wasn’t the best show of the year, but it might have been the show I enjoyed the most. I wonder what other show improved this much from the original to the sequel? I can’t think of one.
I did enjoy the first 13 eps.
No Beato emo distortion faces in this post makes me sad. They even got the mad cackle down!
