hush little baby, don’t say a word

So right after I finish writing K-On!! 4, I noticed a story on Yahoo about sleep positions (also BBC). So, of course, let’s decipher Afternoon Tea Time’s sleeping habits; here’s Yui and friends sleeping and the chart:

And from the article…

* Fetus position – A whopping 41% of participants sleep in this curled-up manner. Women are twice as likely to rest like this and it is listed as the most common position. These sleepers are said to have a tough exterior but are still sensitive and may appear to be shy but warm up quickly.

* Log position – If you sleep on your side with both arms down, you are a social, easy-going person who is trusting, sometimes to the point of being gullible. The study showed 15% of people sleep like a log.

* Yearner position – A close third is the side-lying position with both arms out in front of the body, with 13% of partipants sleeping like this. Yearners are noted to be open-minded and still cynical, suspicious, and stubborn about sticking to decisions once they are made.

* Soldier position – These sleepers lie on their backs with arms down and kept close to the body. This 8% study is said to be reserved, quiet, without fuss, and hold themselves and others to a high standard. Soldier sleepers have a higher likelihood for snoring due to the flat-back position, which may not cause them to wake up often but may result in a less restful night’s sleep.

* Freefall position – Those people who lie on their bellies with arms under or wrapped around a pillow with head turned to the side, make up 7% of the population studied. Freefallers are brash, outgoing, and are very uncomfortable with criticism.

* Starfish position – Sleepers who lie on their backs with arms up near their head or the pillow account for 5% of participants. These people are good listeners, helpful, and are uncomfortable being the center of attention. People who sleep in starfish position are more likely to snore and to suffer from a poor night’s sleep more often.

What does this tell us? Nothing new. We’ve seen Yui sprawled out in various different sleeping styles from the freefall to the starfish to the fetus… then again, her personality is everywhere (except tsundere and yandere) so maybe this fits. Ritsu is classic fetus position, which means she’s a tsundere (except she’s not)… like 41% of the population. Come on, tough exterior with warm middle? That’s a tsundere! Not sure what Mugi is doing with her hands in that image, but let’s say log position, which kinda fits Mugi in that she’s very easy-going. Mio, of course, soldier position. They’d nail the description head-on if it included, “Likely to play the bass and be very, very scared of barnacles.”

  1. Damn, so Soldier-type sleepers are rare? Except they seem to be awful common in anime and manga…

Now, I wonder what position TENSHI sleeps in…

  2. So I checked out the previous Mio-related posts and saw a picture with the caption, “Bass Mio.” That gave me the mental image of Mio as a playable character in Mega Man 10 and beating the heck out of Sheep Man.

    [sigh] I fail so hard at Mio month. ;_;

  3. Hold it! They left out the “spooner” position!

Also, we do have more reliable data on Mio’s sleeping position. Remember that photo of her clutching that pillow, the one that got Ritsu choked?

  4. Now this is the insightful analysis I am expecting from blogsuki ;)

  5. im not crazy about mio but she looks nice here

  6. Fantastic article :D enjoyed it very much. Insightful and amusing. And where can I find the full image of the one above? ^^;~

  7. I sleep in the soldier position and that description is spot on… weird

  8. Speaking of Mio… Noiji Ito did a picture of her in a C76 doujin.

    Go find that, Jason. :D

  9. Hmm… I sleep all over the place, to the point where I get tangled in the bed sheets. What does that make me?

Also, I remember when I was younger, I used to stay up with my friends, or cousins or whatever, pillowfights or playing videogames, then as soon as my uncle/friend’s dad/whichever of my parents showed up in the room, we would all drop to the floor and pretend to be sleeping. Seeing this on K-On!! sure brought back memories and lolz.

Also, I would randomly blurt out a word *usually cat* and then the giggles attacked. Again, many fond memories.
I kind of want to see them pretending that the floor is lava….Oh man, I feel like I’m 6 again xD

  10. Just saw screencaps of the latest K-ON. So what does it signify if you sleep upside-down and are kicking your companion in the face?
