Five tools: melonpan, DFC, chaos, craziness, awesome mecha.

(I’ve literally had this post in my queue for two months now… definitely felt good to finally kick it out.)

If you think of anime as the Major Leagues and manga / light novels / visual novels as the feeder farm system, here are what I consider to be five tool prospects.

(In baseball, five tool prospects are considered to be someone who can hit for average, hit for power, can field, can throw, and can run and can do them all well.)

I had a brief blurb about Kemeko DX a while back, and no one paid any attention to it. I wonder why. Anyway, I originally wrote, “hawt nubile female pilots ugly mecha; harem hijinks ensues.” And that pretty much sums it up.

Kemeko DX is a harem / sci-fi / supernatural series in the vein of Magikano, Maburaho, and Kage Kara Mamouru. It’s not ground breaking that the typical loser male (in this case, Sanpeita, probably one of the worst typical loser male names ever) has some sort of special gift, and the girls are all over him or that and other reasons.

The haremettes are very typical fare. Let’s start with the girl from Sanpeita’s past, whom he can’t seem to get over. Nevermind that he has a Kotori-like, well-endowed haremette named Izumi who is completely hot for him. Nevermind that there’s another one, the DFC Hayakawa, who excels in wandering around in gym clothes while sucking on a popsicle. Nevermind that he also has an imouto, Tamako. Heck, there’s even a thigh meat candidate in Kurosaki.

Sounds like a pretty normal prospect, right?

No, no, no. Kemeko DX has a much different and more kinetic style. The twist is that the main haremette… I… I… I have no clue what her name is. I can’t seem to figure that one out, but she is the pilot of Kemeko, a jack-of-all-trades (and I mean jack-of-all-trades) matryoshka-like mecha. Kemeko is, uh, aesthetically interesting. It’s not a manly mecha like Gurren Lagann, nor is it military-like Gasaraki, nor is it a plasmo toy waiting to happen like Gundam, nor is it trippy like FLCL. It’s… uh… Kemeko. It looks like the Lego man mated with a rice cooker. Fortunately, the unnamed (at least for me) haremette piloting Kemeko is hawt, and she wants to be Sanpieta’s loving wife (shades of Yuno/Yuki), only she can’t function properly outside of the Kemeko suit. She also has a strong resemblance to the girl from Sanpieta’s memories, only she denies it is her.

Kemeko DX is slated to get its own anime series later this year. I’m pumped, just because I hope the anime will answer more questions than the manga. Kemeko DX joins the other five tool prospects in the anime minor leagues, Mirai Nikki, High School of the Dead, and Little Busters.

  1. I used to read the manga but yeah the ugly mecha really got to me so in the end I stopped reading it at about chapter 6 i think.

  2. Doll-like mecha harem hijinx… My brain’s telling me I won’t have enough brain cells to lose once this anime comes out… But then again brain cells are pretty overrated these days

  3. I prefer reading My Balls

But that’s one manga that will never get animated without an R-16 rating

  4. Enh, might as well check out out a few chapters at least. You haven’t steered me wrong with your manga recommendations yet. Thanks Jason.

  5. Kemeko!!! I read this back when the first two chapters were released and loved this… I hadn’t realised/remembered more would be out…

    Great news on the anime.

  6. “I’m pumped, just because I hope the anime will answer more questions than the manga.”

    So wait.

    When has this ever happened?

  7. I’m sorry, but I couldn’t finish reading the post with those freaky nesting-doll-mecha-things staring at me…O_o
