Gar
“Gar” makes the list because since I’ve been an anime fan, I’ve suffered through typical male leads such as the Shinjis and the Keitaros. It’s just a graveyard full of crappy male leads, especially for typical harem-type shows. Well, now it really hasn’t gotten that much better, but at least there’s the Simons, the Yujis, the Hosakas, the Kaminas, the Dan-kuns, and the Kogarashis to balance out the wussy typical male lead characters, and I’m all for it.

Moe Modes
The general phrase that I use to describe typical moe characteristics. For example, “Tsukasa has many moe modes, including DFC, balsamic vinegar, cell phones, twincest, and reindeer.” More moe modes the better, I say. There are also many moe modes that are character specific. For example, “a Tsukasa is fine too,” “Ranka-puppy is cute,” “Mako-cakes,” and “delicious Kyou thigh meat.”

OH GEASS NO!
Really born out of a necessity to wonder why are there so many BL elements in anime directed at (supposedly) teenaged boys. “Hey fellow Sunrise executive, I have a great idea for scene! Lulu rejects Kallen and runs straight into the arms of Rolo. The audience will eat it up!” Except that typical viewer probably is a 16 year old teenaged boy who’d much rather see more bunny girl Kallen or work on finishing his master grade Deathscythe. Toss in the explicable soft pr0n DVD extras… and… why does Lulu not care about all the women around him?!?

#7. Thin. Slicing.
For casual readers, this is probably what this blog is best known for. The thin slicing posts take the longest of any post I write, just because it forces me to watch shows I normally wouldn’t watch like Vampire Knight, Toward the Terra, and Lovely Idol. Some of the old subplots over the years that I’ve enjoyed during thin slicing: the one with Haruhi Suzumiya, when people complained that I ranked it #1. People ripped on me and trashed the light novels. Good times, good times. I also like the one where I forgot to include Nodame Cantabile and got attacked by angry fangirls. I didn’t know fangirls read this blog.
(Mitigating factor: thin slicing posts generate more fanboy and fangirl rage than any other post I write. Well, except possibly this one. Kukuku.)

Really should update the pantheon. Okay folks, help me think of a few names that should be considered for induction. Right now, I have Lockon, Sunohara, and Akira under consideration.

Tie: LOL FANG-TAN / Haruhigasm
Maybe I should have done a “top ten ways to tell that you desperately need to make a sequel” list instead. Number one, of course, would be “your fans are too busy fantasizing about your characters genderswapped to complain about the lack of a second season.” Oh well, I’ve already gone over why I like “LOL FANG-TAN” and “haruhigasm” memes earlier. But I like them better when mixed in with the symmetrical docking meme.

Melonpan
Probably says a little too much about this blog when there’s no less than four separate memes to describe the same body part, and if I used any of those four, I think everyone would understand: DFC, melonpan, flotation device, and scary. Still, the irony of the melonpan meme inspired by an anime character who most definitely does not fit in that category is part of the charm.

its amazing how much influence a blog can have on people, I and other readers of your blog that I know actually use the phrase “Oh Geass no” on a semi daily basis.

Yo guys, I’ve been reading Derailed by Darry for about a year now (I’ve now decided I’m broken enough to post :D). Just wanted to say congratulations for the big “6” and thanks for all you do Jason! Anime wouldn’t be as good without your posts to read afterwards!
Interestingly enough, I came in several years ago when this blog was still AoMM, and I still can’t think of it as DbD.
But yeah, this is *the only* anime blog that I read. I even put up with the sports stuff because the rest is that good.

Jason, I’m so happy to be reading this blog. Yours is one of the first anime blogs I began to read, a few months before the name change. I find we have eerily similar tastes when it comes to anime. Notably this incident:
When Kamen no Meido Guy first came out, I didn’t start watching it because the name put me off… but then, when you wrote you liked it, I had to take a peek… I’ve watched the first episode, loved it, and am downloading more!
I’m sure that if I hadn’t been broken years ago by a friend of mine, you would have done it. Though you still contribute to the ongoing process of my descent into depravity…

I have to throw my thanks in as well. I started reading your blog during the epic Haruhi-Higarashi season. I still go back and read some of your posts when I rewatch shows. Keep it up until Haruhi 2 and FMP 4; if/when they get made.

Nearly a year later, still a reader. I wouldn’t have anything, any other way, Jason. Yours is a blog that pierces the– er. Probably should avoid that.

Nope. It’s more fun with just A and B. It’s kind of a test.

There’s just no way Haruhi could live up to the expectations set for a season 2. Bunny girls would have to popping out from my TV to even come close to the expectations set for it.
On the other side of the coin… I saw there’s going to be yet another Mai Otome series. It’s like a present from Sunrise. But it is still the third extension of Mai Otome.

They’re idiots. Melo and Rip play different positions, for one. So it’s not really a valid comparison since the NBA is all about positions these days… for example, Rip would be a lot more valuable to Utah than Melo (since Utah has shit 2s but a halfway decent 3). By contrast, Melo is a lot more valuable to the Lake Show since they have Kobe at the 2 but Odom and his bong at the 3.
Because of this blog I’ve been pro-actively using ‘derailed’ in conversations.
