get a room

Last night I met up with some friends for karaoke at a Korean place in Santa Clara. It was Asian style in that all the groups are housed in their own little rooms complete with projection TV, 20,000+ song collections, and a full DDR setup. Of course, it was all pirate stuff– it was pretty obvious from the crappy, crappy visuals and the misspellings… an average of 2/song. The downside? Because it is a Korean place, everything (minus DDR) is in Korean, and no one spoke Korean. After fumbling around for 5 minutes or so, we finally managed to get songs queued up and singing.
The collection is primarily CPOP, though they had a decent KPOP and JPOP selection as well. I don’t know any Chinese songs well enough to sing, and I can’t read Chinese very well, so I passed. The one Japanese song that I have memorized, Utada Hikaru’s First Love (I wonder why this is…), wasn’t on the playlist, but every other song from her was. There was also a large anime/game selection with BoA’s Every Heart and FFX’s Suteki Desu Nee. As for Korean… hahahaha. Let’s no go there. The English selection was screaming 1998 with its clutter of Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and Shania Twain.
I mostly stuck with English songs like Phil Collin’s You’ll Be in My Heart, Sonique’s It Feels So Good, and my sad attempt to rap in Nelly’s Hot in Here… but it wasn’t as bad as my attempt at Love Destiny. For one, the song is like 3x longer than the Sis Pri OP, which is about the extent of what I know… that and you don’t want to hear me going “Aitai ai ai ai ai no ni”…
It was a lot of fun, and I’d probably go again, but not before a little practice.
