anime blog toshokan feedback

I would like to hear what people think of ABT thus far. I am at a crossroad with the site, and I’d like to get some feedback in a few areas before proceeding further. It would be greatly appreciated if you can provide some feedback to the following:

  1. Would you like to see ABT index more blogs? Or are there too many blogs currently indexed?
  2. Should there be a restricter definition of “anime blog”? I.e. minimum 75% anime-ish posts?
  3. Is the delay between posting and indexing by ABT acceptable? Or too long?
  4. Are there anime blogs currently that you read regularly but not presently indexed?
  5. Besides having a real RSS re-feed, do you have any feature requests for ABT?

Please feel free to e-mail me at blog at verthandi d0t net if you would like to answer privately. Thanks for your time.

  1. I’d probably say that you’ve got about the right level of blogs in the ABT index, or even a couple more than are required at the moment. I used to track the main ones manually (Matthew, Random Curiousity, Memento), and even now I tend to check on them despite coming here first.

I would suggest, however, maybe having the system avoid grabbing pictures – I just want a quick summary of the post, rather than seeing the whole thing… and the graphics can take a bit of time to load. I sort of treat this like an RSS feed which has expanded entries, which means I want the page to load fast and clean, and I can always head over to get the screencaps once I’ve seen the entry in question. Maybe having the log substitute the shots with something like (Screenshot) as a placeholder would help?

  2. Well, ABT has become my most visited site in a day, second only to TokyoTosho itself. I find it increasingly convinient for me to check out what’s up in the anime blogosphere everyday without having to manually check each and every blog.

Plus, ABT also exposes me to a lot of new blogs that I wouldn’t usually know otherwise. I feel for now, the amount of blogs syndicated in ABT is quite good already.

One gripe I have is the non-support of special characters like “…” and “_|-|0” seem to be replaced with a “?”. Is it an encoding problem?

  3. I’d like to suggest to cut down on the indexing time. At the same time, parse out the images.

  4. hmm
as far as the site is concerned, i bliv its doing very well indeed. like kurogane, its become my most viewed site everyday. the updates r as frequent as it can get and the indexed blogs r pretty good and hav allowed me to experience many sites in which i never knew existed. i used to gripe tat seaslugs wasnt on the list but now tat it is, i dun really hav much complaints.

  5. The current amount of The current amount of blogs seems to be just right. Also, parsing out the images would be beneficial. As for features, it would be nice to be able to filter entries (ie. only see entries related to ‘Tsubasa Chronicle’). Maybe a form that automatically searches through the current entries on the page and only displays whatever entries match the submitted string. So I can type Tsubasa and only entries that contain the word Tsubasa would show up.

Other than that, love the site and the service. You could keep it exactly the same and I wouldn’t mind. :)

  6. I’ve been introduced to a lot of new blogs I wouldn’t have ordinarily read, so I think the more the merrier.

I think maybe there should be some way of consolidating a blog’s posts into a single slot if it has more than one per day. So if I posted twice in a day, it would say something like “Basugasubakuhatsu Anime Blog – 2 posts >>” And then expand from there.

    That would be mega-awesome!

As for the delay, isn’t there some kind of way for you to receive a ping whenever a blog is updated that lets you know right away? I dunno how 1337 of a programmer you are, so maybe that’s too hard?

Besides those nitpicky things, I think this service is awesome, and I’m glad to be a part of it.

  7. I just love ABT. I actually think more people visit my site because of ABT.

  8. hmm my only complaint is the feed with Random Curiosity..wat exactly is the problem?

  9. I like ABT the way it is now, and I agree with the suggestions people have already made, especially about making some sort of search feature. Say I just wanted entries about Rozen Maiden, I could get just that. Something that might be interesting would have some sort of featured blog of the week or something… maybe a way for newer blog or lesser known ones to get a little exposure. Also, about the restricter defenition, I don’t see “other” posts come up that often, but it might be worthwhile just to keep things clean.

Keep up the great work with this!! Like Kurogane said, this and TokyoTosho (and my e-mail) the sites I visit the most each day.

  10. I also like ABT, but don’t like that was not found on this server.

    >the feed with Random Curiosity..wat exactly is the problem?

    The MIME-type is text/html?

  11. >I also like ABT, but don’t like that was not found on this server.

What I wanted to say is that “http://toshokan.verthandi.net/refeed/out/rss.php?v=2” was not found on this server.

  12. Thanks for the feedback. There will be a few new features added to ABT soon.

Kanna, I’m not sure what you’re trying to find… that’s not a valid URL for this site.

  13. <link rel=”alternate” type=”application/ rss+xml” title=”RSS 2.0″ href=”http://toshokan.verthandi.net/refeed/out/rss.php?v=2″ />

The link element is contained in the HTML tags. This will be rendered as RSS by Firefox or Opera or other RSS-readable web browsers.

And … why can’t submit comment by Opera? I can’t understand the reason why “Submit Comment” is disabled.

  14. Mmm… I’ll look into the Opera issue. Appears to be a JS bug somewhere. Thanks for letting me know. (Edit: I think I fixed it. Please let me know if it’s still broken.)

As I said earlier, that’s not really a valid URL for the site. Probably some legacy code I forgot to remove when I first coded ABT.

  15. I pretty sure that Omni’s feed problem originates from one of his plugins. I’m not that sure if he needs more publicity anyways, he’s having problems keeping his site up now from sheer demand only.

  16. The newer indexer can parse Omni’s feed. I’ll re-activate RC when I upgrade ABT.

  17. Please… please tell me the closure thing is just a joke…..
