shakugan no shana 19

Most of this episode featured the three flame hazes planning their counterattack on the Professor. In other words, there’s no melonpan or possible wardrobe malfunctions. But… for people who have been cheering for Yoshida, this episode is the pay-off. At the end of the previous episode, Yoshida runs away from the festival, tripping, then seeing Shana there to save her (eventually). File this away.

19 begins with Shana saving Yoshida then promptly escorting her back to Khamsin. Yoshida realizes that Shana not only knows that Yuji is a torch but that she still has feelings for him despite that. Gives her some resolve. Meanwhile, Margery notices that Khamsin is up to something so she goes to him, and the two compare notes… only to be interrupted by a pissed-off Yuji who spouts lines like, “Yoshida doesn’t know anything, why’d you tell her? WHY? Why can’t you let her live in peace?” Khamsin cooly answers, “I see… she’s someone important to you.” “She’s a kind person!” Which is fantastic considering that Shana and Yoshida are hiding in the background. +1 to Yoshida. -10 to Shana.

Luckily, Margery is around to break up the awkwardness, and she gets them focused on the distortion at hand. Before Yoshida can tune, they must take out the source of the disturbance… and both Margery and Shana set out for it. Too bad they were tricked, but Yuji notices it in time and redirects the pair to the proper coordinates. In quite possibly the lamest fight of the series, after Shana and Margery make it to the Professor’s blimp, they are told to back off by Khamsin (honestly, this episode has been 90% dialogue, 10% angst, 0% melonpan) who summons his Behemoth and has it toss a fracken’ rock at the blimp. It’s pwned. That’s it.

(Obviously, this arc is more about Yoshida/Yuji/Shana than it is about tomogara.)

While the blimp is going down, Yoshida and Yuji take cover, and when Yuji tries to get up… well… *sniff*…

(Dialogue around 20:00 mark.)

Yuji: “Yoshida-san…”

Yosida: “Sakai-kun… so warm… you’re not you anymore… ?”

Yuji: “My true self is dead. My current self is not human.”

Yoshida: “Sakai-kun… you’re human. I believe it.”

Yuji: “Human? Me?”

Yoshida: “Because… you’re so warm… your body is warm… so is your heart.”

Yuji: “Human… ”

Yoshida: “I love that Sakai-kun. I love you, Sakai-kun.”

(I won’t spoil the rest.)

At the end of the episode, Yoshida is helping restore the town (she has to tune… nakkid?), and Shana realizes that it hurts seeing Yuji with Yoshida. A lot. She can’t be honest with herself so she runs away from him, tripping, and eventually seeing… Wilhelmina . Cue Aka no Seijaku.

Good episode filled with classic emotions. The weakest part of the show is all the baubble about the Professor and his evil plans. I mean, if they’re just going to have Khamsin toss a dumb rock at it, why not just do that right off of the bat and save us all time? Time that could be better spent on the Yoshida/Yuji/Shana love triangle or at least Wilhelmina .

I don’t think that this episode had Shana saying a total of like five lines that wasn’t, “Yuji…” “Yuji…” and “Yuji…”. It’s definitely Yoshida’s turn to shine, and unlike Shana, who cannot present her feelings, Yoshida seems to gain even more confidence in herself and is true to herself when she finally confesses her affections for Yuji. Yuji seems, uh, surprised, which confirms that he is the most clueless male lead since Inu Yasha. He does however realize that maybe, just maybe, his actions hurt Shana. While Shana continues to come off pretty childish, Yoshida comes off mature and intensely likable. I’m no longer sure if I’m in the Shana camp anymore… anyway, with the gathering of the four flame hazes, the final arc looks like it is revving up, and I can’t wait for Wilhelmina to start admonishing Yuji. (Though, if they somehow work out a threesome with Wilhelmina , Chigusa, and Shana, I’ll just quit watching anime. Nothing could ever top that. Not even Saber x Rin x Caster or Athrun x Kira x Shinn.)

  1. Well definitely agree that this is a Yoshida episode more than a Shana one, but it does flesh out Shana’s character as well too.

Shana’s childish, but you have to remember that she *is* technically a child since I think being a Flame Haze freezes any growth and she hasn’t really experienced normal life and love before.

Anyways, next episode will definitely be a Shana and Wilhelmina centered episode, based on the preview.

  2. … Wilhemina has one HUGE bloody backpack. You could probably shove Margery in there, with room to spare for Satou.

This was definitely not Shana’s episode – she nearly got her buttocks flamed by the Professor’s ship, and only Kashim’s Behemoth form brought the thing down; Yuji hears Kazumi’s confession, and he expresses his concern for bringing her into this mess to Kashim while the two of them listen; and Shana still dislikes the idea that she could LIKE Yuji.. which means that she ends up running away from the possibility of confronting him with it, and her words in the last episode (“She doesn’t matter! We’re together!”) came off as extremely selfish and uncaring – things which would end up rubbing Yuji the wrong way. Worse yet, he still has no idea Shana likes him, and may develop the idea she’s obsessed with USING him, which spells doom to any relationship she might have with him.

And, if they follow the novels… well, I do wonder. Of course, for all I know, Shana won’t end up with Yuji, Kazumi might die, and Yuji himself goes along his own path as he can’t work with Shana anymore as he rejects her, and goes on his way.

But I guess THAT won’t be happening anytime soon – it’d be too hard to push merchandise when you piss the fans off like that.

  3. So how does your earlier “Quit Watching Anime” scene of Saber saying “ecchi na no wa ikenai to omouimasu” to Rin before a mana recharge compare to Shana x Chigusa x Wilhelmina?

And I’m with Kurogane on this one. Kazumi scores big in this ep with Yuuji and the fans. My reaction to Shana’s disastrous “She doesn’t matter! She’s got nothing to do with us!” was that Shana is still quite pure and guileless. Would have been much more effective to manipulate him by reminding him that he needs to protect the town and the people in it like his mom and Kazumi and when it’s over and safe he can talk to Kazumi at his leisure.

Really, Yuuji has got his priorities all girl-chasing-based: A tomogara is attacking and I help fight it! But oh no! Talking to the crying girl is so much more important! The worst sort of playa – unconsciously and instinctively so with the good guy veneer. :P

  4. >> 1

    Shana and Wilhelmenia bathing 4tw.

    >> 2

I don’t think that Yuji even knew that Yoshida liked him. The guy is always pre-occupied with stuff like, “Am I going to flame out?” “Am I going to leave town?” “Am I helpful?” Never focusing on the women at hand… until now.

    >> So how does your earlier “Quit Watching Anime”…

All new pronoucements supercede past pronoucements. ;)

  5. I have to say this… Yuuji no baka!

Where is all that crap he said time ago like “Stay with Shana for ever” or “Because of Reiji Maijo, I can live for ever and then stay with Shana” (remember that, when they were on the roof). And now, only because Kasumi founds the truth about everything, he forgot that. Well, al least he doesn’t know about Shana’s feelings (yeah, they are feelings), but every action in the past two episodes take a lot of Shana’s happiness and hopes. I don’t know how this story is going to end, but… I hope “baka” Yuuji remember two things. First, he is sill a Torch, not a human, but himself acknowledge he is Sakai Yuuji (the only thing that matters), and second, Shana could be a little selfish when she said that Kazumi don’t have nothing to do with them, but her heart don’t kwon how handle love and the way to make it clear.

If there is not a happy ending with Shana & Yuuji, al least show us a great final.

  6. I totally agree. Yuuji wa hontoni baka baka baka! I always wanted Yuuji and Shana to be together, they’re just so cute together. Especially with that whole teaser episode of Shana “giving Yuuji a reward”. I honestly expected it to be a kiss and so did Yuuji! Maybe Yuuji feels, since Shana can’t express her feelings, that Shana doesn’t like him that way. But I can’t accept Kazumi coming in between them. I don’t hate Kazumi, but I really dislike her meekness in the beginning and total self-denial. I won’t stand for a Kazumi – Yuuji couple! Yuuji and Shana all the way!

  7. Shana has every right to slap Yuuji with melon-pan like the oath breaker that he is. She is understanbaly confused about the matter and who in the world can claim to have never acted selfishly? Yoshida may be in the lead, but her history of indecsion can still give Shana time to mature under the formidable tutalege of Wilhelmenia, Maid of Doom. Looks like Wilhelmenia thinks little of Yuuji, should be an interesting development.

-Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?

  8. This episode was actually Khamsin’s episode. He showed his power at the end and saved the day. He just kept quite and observed the situation. When he started attacking, that’s it.That’s how a experienced Flame-Haze fight in the battleground. He used two flame haze as the players to tackle the situation and finished it with just one blow in the end.WoA! that’s rock

  9. Thank you

For speak about him LOL. It’s funny when Margery says “Is going to make a hole” LOL. One thing I want to know is if Khamsin’s going to help in the next arc. Maybe not, but he made a good role in this past to chapters, well, maybe Yuuji thinks he was too cruel with Kasumi, but there was nothing to do about it. If anybody knows how Shakugan no Shana is going to end, tell me please.

I just noticed… is Shana living already with Yuuji? because she always is there, or still peeks into his room when “pretend to go home al night”. For get it, juts speculations.
