melancholy opf haruhi suzumiya 13 discussion

Eye of the Tiger! Let’s see how much I can get done in thirty minutes…

(Please note the spoiler tag. Spoilers sprinkled throughout this time.)

If she hadn’t gone into her melancholic spiel she would have just dragged Kyon of only Haruhi knows where instead of taking her ball and going home. – _rand_

A hotel with low hourly rates?

Is Haruhi’s “My SOS Dan will never die” a clue to the possibilty of a second season or simple megalomania? Only time will tell. – Lupus

Remember, Haruhi doesn’t want a boyfriend because that would take her away from her beloved SOS Brigade. Haruhi generally finds the club boring, yet she doesn’t want to give it up… kinda like how I am with Ghost Whisperer… am I sharing too much?

Despite her obnoxious behaviour, her being a 美人 might be the reason why I continue to like her. NO! Must resist! Must not turn to.. Haruhi-ism… GAAAAHHHH!!!!! – syock

Someone enjoying their first haruhigasm. I’m getting the sniffles.

Build up is good; I always enjoy some some good existential foreplay before I haruhigasm.

Though hair-flipping Itsuki was a bit of a turn off ;_; – Squabie

Itsuki isn’t a turn off for the fangirls! See…

I have not much to add to the philosophical musings going on here, but for those who find Itsuki tedious, I can’t second that. Because he’s *got* to be one of the most handsome anime characters there is. And eye candy, as a rule, dispels all boredom for those who appreciate it. – Lynn

That applies to Mikuru. She could be going over my tax returns, and I’d be fixated on her non-deductible assets.

As to Itsuki’s handsomeness, I dunno. For recent characters, I’d rank him below The King, Ginko, and Yzak. Itsuki’s over-confident and cocky smile bugs me for some reason. Plus, how close his face got to Mikur bugs me even more. Grrr.

>> “(Even when everybody knows what means the “Sleep Beauty” clue)”

Wasn’t it “Snow White”? – HitokiriShadow

Both are correct. Spoiler:

I’m giddy for the upcoming “… now work hard on repopulating the world with Haruhi” comment. Or should I be giddy for “I like you better in a ponytail”?

This is going to setup a very interesting choice for Haruhi in the last episode. Which will she choose? The rationality that is Kyon or the fun that is aliens and espers and time-travelers? Can’t wait. – justanothergirl

I’m not sure if that’s her choice. I think her choice is between the world as it is, or a new world to be re-populated by her and Kyon. The Matrix’s Architect, anyone?

And at that time they made a promise, but were forcibly seperated… wait a sec… I think I’ve heard this one before… – teki

Athrun and Kira? Romeo and Juliet? Tom and Katie? Ruriko and Shin?

Wait, Haruhi and Kyon know each other from before? Tosses a wrench (or at least a dv/dt) into the equation.

Young haruhi reminds me of young Ruriko, sitting on a swing with a ribbon on her hair. – BeLe

Someone, get young Haruhi a bow and arrow, STAT.

Itsuki’s longwinded, pretentious spiels can get tiresome, but for me, they’re worth it because they bring out the best in Kyon. One of the interesting things about their relationship is that Itsuki is basically Kyon’s confidant and closest friend, whether he likes it or not. Kyon is always snarking on the rest of the cast in the privacy of his own mind, but with Itsuki (and rarely Haruhi) he lays it out up front. It’s an interesting dynamic. – Vinland

I don’t think you want to insult or belittle Haruhi in front of her. You may die. As for Mikuru, she’s perfect. What is there to snark at for Mikuru? And Yuki… well… she doesn’t talk. So the only one Kyon can lash out to is Itsuki.

Itsuki’s explanation of Haruhi’s rationality impeding her realization of the supernatural events around her reminds me of a quote by the mathematician John F. Nash who received the Nobel Prize after recovering from a 25 years of paranoid schizophrenia. – justanothergirl

*whoosh* Did you see that? Just went over my head. I need to go rent Beautiful Mind.

“I JUST SAW EPISODE 13… WOW!!! I LOVE IT. I MISS EVANGELION.” xoxo

got this from a friend. i guess you all know what i’m trying to implicate =) – silent_one

The same thing I tried to implicate in my Thin Slicing preview?

As for how it turned out, I think the paths were very similar. Gainax catapulted to a top-tier studio after Eva. Both shows question existance and meaning-of-life. Both feature memorable characters… Shinji for his ineptness; Kyon for his sarcasm, for instance. However, Haruhi Suzumiya out-evas Eva on one big front: Haruhi manages to use cutting edge animation techniques to enhance the story, whereas Gainax’s crayon art is still a hotly debated topic.

They WERE “aliens” in the original Gatekeepers, which is why it was such a shock when someone turned out to be an invader. You’re kind of reaching with the Gatekeepers tangent. – Zeboim

I’m pretty sure that Shadow mentions that they thought they were aliens, and they were wrong. So they must be espers or time travelers instead?

Ha! I remember hearing someone saying that we look for a couple because we want a “witness to our life”. I believe this is specially true in Haruhi’s case. – Nemo_N

So she’s looking for a biographer… ? I think she’s looking for meaning to her life. Even though she brushes off the notion of love, I think it’s one way to validate one’s existance.

You know, I do believe Yuki attacked Mikuru because Kimuru was about to unleash an actual Mikuru Beam. – [schism]

Have we ever discovered what Mikuru’s powers were besides “make traditional males melt in their seats”?

Some thoughts on season two…

a 2nd season of MoSH will likely turn out to be something non-linear like FMP: Fumoufuu – Xeifa

I think Fumoffu was the greatest FMP series. Plenty of action, Sagara and Chidori, Bonta-kun, comedy, the cover ducky, and, of course, Psycho Police Chix0r.

People are totally missing the point if they say there are no long stories left to tell. Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, a series even made by the same company, existed entirely without a long story. It made for perfect filler material until the actual sequel came out. So is there really any problem if there is a Suzumiya Haruhi series 1.5 where there is no running plot? – Trejkaz

I kinda like no running plot. Nothing wrong with slice-of-life mechanics like Fumoffu, Mushishi, or even Genshiken. Much better than Sunrise’s “Let’s make it up as we go along” strategy. I just hope that they don’t do a Law and Order: Loli Demon Revenge Unit-type of thing where every episode will be solved with some sort of Mikuru cosplay. What am I saying, I rooting for that… I want to see Haruhi ferry off Mikuru’s seifuku on a weekly basis.

If KyoAni does make a second season, I think Volume 2 and Volume 4 are the obvious sources for the main plot arcs. Perhaps they could fit both in a single 14 episode season, though if they also want to fit in some independant stories from other books (Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, Snow Mountain Syndrome, etc) it might be tight. – BlckKnght

I think they have _plenty_ of material for another season, seeing how more stories are still pumped out for Sneaker. I definitely want to see Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina animated… maybe it’ll be like Tess’ OVA… just 30 minutes of Mikuru fumbling around various costumes.

Unless KyoAni wants to commit harakiri they will make that second season. I still hope for a going out with a bang and not a whimper. I hate Kanon even more grr…. Oh and a billet just opened up in Tokyo… – Crusader

A real patriot.

If there isn’t a second seaon, heads with roll! – Animanga

Love the use of Haruhi’s catchphrase. She has many, doesn’t she… I’m still a fan of “men are potatoes,” even though it was Kyon. I also like her constant use of “zenzen.” Then there’s all her “mmphs” when she gets grumpy.

Don`t aggravate about Mikuru not appearing this time. You`ll get to see her flirting in action next week. Short it may be though. If that`s still not enough, just buy the Asahina Mikuru Adventures Episode 00 DVD then. You`ll not be bored of it. – syock

So is Haruhi available on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray yet? I think that would end the format wars… early adopting otaku leaning towards one format because of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Oh come on… like you wouldn’t want 1080i bunny girl goodness.

This theory popped into my mind. If all the members of the SOS-Brigade reflect a part of Haruhi’s personality, like Itsuki does, then perhaps Kyon is her rational side; which may explain why even though he’s set as the lowest ranking member in SOS, he’s the most important to her. – Komidol

I don’t believe so just because that would mean that Yuki would be her quiet side… and Haruhi has no quiet side. I’m kinda interested now in what Haruhi sees in Kyon, though anime has taught me to suspend belief on similar topics… oh, looks,

Don’t tell me Haruhi did not notice Itsuki glowing and releasing energy because of her common sense logic block?? – Megane

Could be special effects, like the original Mikuru-beam.

I’ve been following along with this blog for well over a year now, and I always pick up on the suggested animes you point out. Haruhi has not only been awesome enough for me, but awesome enough for my friends who aren’t into anime as much. – Sieg

Most of my friends who are casual (as defined by “Hey, Bleach is awesome!”) don’t care too much for Haruhi and her merry friends. I think Haruhi is a breathe of fresh air for a sometimes jaded fan… maybe for people who aren’t as jaded, they’ll look at it different.

Is there a translation for the novels that’s further along than the baka-tsuki project, or do all the cryptic mutterings I hear on subjects like the cat come from the bilingual? – extraclassiclite

Strato, a.f.k.’s translator, is separately translating the novels. Baka-Tsuki is doing Chinese-to-English mainly, whereas Strato is doing Japanese-to-English.

So… do we start bitching after next episode about the things that KyoAni has apparently completely dropped or forgotten about from the very first episode? – AC

I’d rather pick apart more Sunrise shows. I like to promote anime… how does shooting down one of the best shows in the past five years help promote anime? Helps my ego, but certainly not anime.

I also saw a VW beetle before they passed the toll area or whatever it was. – Jason Isenberg

Earlier in the episode, around when Kyon and Haruhi cross the tracks.

I marvel in awe at Itsuki’s anthropic principle and am amazed something as umm… deep has found its way into anime. More proof that this isn’t just your ordinary anime. – zero

I find it more fascinating that they can balance both the deeper self-reflections with bunny girls and not be a complete train wreck.

The episode was quite spectacular for its almost GiTS: SAC explanation mode. – [schism]

If tachikomas helping out the Major is a ten out of ten, then Rin’s explaination of the Holy Grail game to mentally damaged Emiya ranks a solid two out of ten. Haruhi’s “I was loli than imouto” spiel is an eight, while Itsuki scores a four.

Speaking of lolis…

Young Haruhi is win. Who’s cuter, Imouto-san or young Haruhi? Would Haruhi in a duffle bag be better than Imouto-san? Someone make a comparison! – Lupus

If KyoAni somehow manages to cram in a loli-Haruhi-in-a-duffel-bag appearance in the next season, I’ll personally go down to their studio and thank them for making my day/year/century. – Fat Cat Lim

Oh yeah, RORI HARUHI FTW. It’s a fight between Imouto and Loli Haruhi now! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME KYOANI? – Kozumura

No contest. Rori-haruhi FTW. Imouto could grow up fat and un-moe. We already know Haruhi grows up to be tsundere-megalomaniac. I go for the sure thing every time. – zero

Yep, that’s right. Four way tie for the “we’ll be watching your career with interest” award.

Just a couple of days and there r already this many comments? Just how large is the fan-base for this series outside Japan? It`s not just thousands? – syock

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumia is #1 on blogsuki. It’s downloaded an average of 10x more than an episode NANA. It has a 9+ rating on Anidb. But for this blog, only one explaination:

Best. Readers. Ever.

I don’t even flinch for comments like this anymore:

no mikuru in this episode? so i unzipped for nothing? – SH

Runner up for YTAMR for this discussion. The winner would be…

heh… when the old apartment manager mentioned that kyon shouldn’t let her get away, i immediately wondered what adult haruhi would look like, in a bunny suit…..

and then i added adult mikuru in a bunny suit, and it got quite good – kablaq

Yep, these are my readers.

  1. I can’t get enough of these discussion updates. Your responses to some of the comments always get me laughing. :D

  2. >>> I definitely want to see Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina animated… maybe it’ll be like Tess’ OVA… just 30 minutes of Mikuru fumbling around various costumes.

DAMN! I was about to make the exact same comment! You RULE!

In any case, I expect 26 episodes next season! No “remake-got-us-busy” crap.

  3. *grin* It’s always an amusing read. Sure appreciate the dry humor, Jason.

  4. “cutting edge animation techniques”

Really? I thought that’s GONZO. Oh wait that’s “bleeding” edge. Comparing the art of two series with over a decade in between is not unfair but just pointless. Besides I thought that black background scene was more of a bugdet saver for the final than anything else. The computer animated or maybe just overdrawn video scenes were better than the average GONZO fuckup but even here, the repeat button was far too obvious or in other words, even here the repeat button was far too obvious.

  5. >>> Athrun and Kira? Romeo and Juliet? Tom and Katie? Ruriko and Shin?

I was thinking more of Bell and K1 – I’m reasonably sure and I was being tongue-in-cheek and that Haruhi and Kyon hadn’t met before, but the possibility amuses me.

Maybe they’ll save the Kyon & Haruhi repopulating the world bit for an OVA, or a shower scene at least. Calculus jokes ftw. ;)

  6. Oh men, this is much fun than watching the World Cup, for me as a football fan

Yeah! Only one episode more to go, what a shame for an excellent series, but I don’t hate KyoAni because they choose to remake Kanon; maybe with only 14 episodes they made a masterpiece here (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya ranks # 2 over ANN, big success). I’m going to miss this series.

    And yeah! Mikuru cosplay-mode FTW

  7. “Both [Snow White and Sleeping Beauty] are correct.”

I figured the Snow White hint meant that Kyon is going to have to kiss Haruhi in order to bring her out of some sort of trance or something. If the hint is that the Prince (Kyon) will have to kiss the Princess/Goddess (Haruhi), then they amount to same thing. The Snow White part could be more applicable if Haruhi is offered some sort of “poisoned apple” though.

Anyway, what I meant was that All-Woman Mikuru said “Snow White” not “Sleeping Beauty.”

  8. “I don’t believe so just because that would mean that Yuki would be her quiet side… and Haruhi has no quiet side. I’m kinda interested now in what Haruhi sees in Kyon, though anime has taught me to suspend belief on similar topics….

Perhaps she represents her intelligent side. She is very clever, as well as book smart. Hell she’s everything smart. She has to be to manipulate the way she does.

  9. >>A real patriot.

Nuts, the billet was for SK1 or above and indpendent duty to boot. Part of me wants to cry but the better half simply wants destory the the stupid LDP for their insistence on half assed re-alignment. Damn you Koizumi you lewd old man and your stupid party! I bet they’re all fans of Kanon I hope the North Koreans put a big pile of steaming shit one a taedong II and send it s your way. You stole my billet give it back!

  10. “Anyway, what I meant was that All-Woman Mikuru said “Snow White” not “Sleeping Beauty.””

You’re right, “Snow White” comes from Mikuru-big… but “Sleeping Beauty” comes from Yuki.

I think that’s the thing with Haruhi. It’s aimed more at people who have actually been watching anime for some time. I’m not sure if that’s the case with Eva but the mere fact that Eva has big robots and explosions probably vaults it past Haruhi by alot. Its not like a Naruto or Bleach shounen-type that can pull people in to anime, but its a good thoughtful series that anybody should be able to enjoy.

    >I’d rather pick apart more Sunrise shows. I like to promote anime… how does shooting down one of the best shows in the past five years help promote anime? Helps my ego, but certainly not anime.

Great response. One of the reasons you get alot of readers ;)

  12. >>Yep, that’s right. Four way tie for the “we’ll be watching your career with interest” award.

Incidentally, I’m currently unemployed and in the midst of looking for a job. Does that mean anything? :p

  13. mwahahaha… i got the YTAMR… i wonder if there should be some sort of drawn up award for that :D…

to photoshop i go, no guarantee of success though :P

p.s. aside from one or two single pictures, i haven’t seen much bunny suit yuki… i wonder why.. :(

  14. I’m rediculously confused…
Jason’s blogging but was supposed to be at mosquito falls….
I’m reading comments comparing Kyon’s sister with young Haruhi for moeness…
We have one episode left of SHnY…
Ghost in the Shell suddenly came up (I really REALLY liked the animations (both movies and both series)…
I just read 70 chapters of Death Note (manga) which is really brain churning (so many points of view that it makes me feel almost like I’m reliving Ghost in the Shell)
    >>no mikuru in this episode? so i unzipped for nothing? – SH
    AND I now I’m disturbed.
    I flinched.

well whatever the reason, nice to see you still on Jason… I ALMOST didn’t check my live bookmark for AoMM everytime I start up FireFox.

  15. It’s over!!!
Haruhi Suzumiya no Yuutsuu is over…
And again… the world as we known is covered in darkness..

We hope for a new light…

  16. i just realized something that might be interesting to think about after watching the final episode (better be just the end of season 1).

you remember how in ep. 2, which is the real beginning of the series, Kyon gives his introduction about what he believes in. what if you go back and watch the series for when everything odd happens…

people are assuming that what the others tell to Kyon about Haruhi being a goddess who can control the world is correct. but honestly couldnt Kyon just as easily be another god…or even the real god so to speak in this anime.

the final part of the “nightmare” of ep 14 made me realize how much control he could really have over all of this. i need to go back through the series again and look at this theory in more detail but honestly every considering him to be special doesnt have to be taken as just being someone god is in love with…

and make no mistake Haruhi and him are definitely a couple. all the episodes point to this as much as you try to look for him to match up with other people.

its just he seems to have just as much control over what happens as Haruhi. take another look please ^^

  17. Every man and their dog has already proposed that Kyon is truly in control of the world.

  18. havent seen anyone propose it yet…but right now it seems obvious

  19. I have to say, I think this series stinks on ice. Sorry; I do (I’m also an Evangelion-hater, if that makes you feel better). The main problem is Haruhi herself. Rarely have I liked an anime character less. She is an obnoxious pushy loudmouth. She’s a sociopath who doesn’t even see the people around her as human, and certainly has no regard for their feelings. She gets away with it by a combination of her looks and by abusing the good nature of those around her. I put up with enough people like her when I went through high school the first time – I sure don’t need to relive it. And it’s sure not what I watch anime for.

Someone once asked Mel Brooks what the difference between comedy and tragedy was. He said (I paraphrase) “If I get a little hangnail on my finger, that’s tragedy! Call a doctor, get the Rabbi, fetch some medicine, it’s a tragedy! If you, on the other hand, fall down a manhole and die, that’s comedy!” In other words, comedy is tragedy that happens to other people. There’s some validity in this, but sometimes pain is just pain. If it were real life and I was anyone who cared about Mikuru Asahina, I’d find time to have a three-way discussion with the head of the SOS Brigade – her, me, and Satoshi’s baseball bat would come to an understanding.

Long story short, seeing people used by a manipulative sociopath is not my idea of entertainment. Back to loli slashers.

  20. Nergol: cute girls slicing people to ribbons is not my idea of entertainment. However, there was a time around ep.9 where I was in agreement about Haruhi. She was way too obnoxious, manipulative, and abusive for a while. Good marks to KyoAni for putting that in the middle where it wouldn’t spoil the ending.

Trejkaz: I am a lot of things, but I am not every man and his dog.

Chris: Late to the party, dude. But honestly, even I don’t believe it. Though it’s fun to tweak people with!

Sigh. No more Melancholy makes me…. melancholy.

  21. Nergol> she has to be that way for the story line to work out…IF Haruhi is continued then its kinda obvious that as pushy she may be on the outside she still has another side to her. ep 12 is the best example of this i can give you. Haruhi is still human. and i think thats what makes the insane side of her so amusing and appealing…if you didnt like it or thought it got annoying thats totally and completely your fault and no one elses. dont blame KyoAni.

Ubu Roi> sorry im not really a regular here so i had no idea whether it was brought up before. i actually have a load of theories that could all be plausable. hints given throughout can point Kyon as any of probably 100 different circumstances for existence in this little world. we all understand he is more important than everyone else realizes…but we dont know yet so if we ever get a 2nd season i guess well find out for sure. if we dont then i think its more up to the individual to decide whats going on behind the scenes which i think makes this even more of an amazing anime. its not a set story line…you really can tweak the storyline yourself.

  22. There is a sequel to the book Melancholy of Haruhi called Sigh of Haruhi, leads me to believe it is semi likely that and 2nd Season may be in the works. I’m hoping that it is.

  23. Well, some people can’t handle jerkass characters. Don’t watch it then. Yes, there are some people who find the abuse of Mikuru funny. Yes, there are also people who are aware that Haruhi is a sociopathic bitch that noone would lay a finger on in real life and STILL like her. Get over it.

Gregory House’s fans should agree here.

There’s also a thing called Character Development. There’s a point in her jerkyness. It’s about her learning a concept of friendship. She starts out as a self-absorbed, misantrophic loner. Then she goes into being a hyperactive, ruthless bitch and in the course of the anime very much does begin to care about her fellow members.. And guess another thing? In the course of the novels (which isn’t the anime, I know.), she get’s buttload nicer too. See the development? It’s about her moving FROM and unlikable jerkass INTO a nicer person.

I have to add: What’s with all this Haruhi debating? She’s not the only thing in that story, you know?

Quite frankly, the second season will be much more enjoyable to all the people who are scared of Haruhi. The name “Disappearance Of Haruhi Suzumiya” isn’t just random, after all.
