HAKUORO SMASH!

Utawarerumono is a lightweight HTRPG (hentai tactical role playing game). Unlike traditional h-games, Utawarerumono is a straightforward, linear path game. There’s no branching or user choice to dictate the plot direction, and the linear nature of the story makes Growlanser Generations feel like World of Warcraft. Also, the object of the game isn’t to score with all the lady-folk but to deal with various crisis which afflict poor Hakuoro. There’s some plot driven h-scenes, but most are completely from left field, like “Touka decides to take a bath,” “Kamyu wakes Hakuoro up at night,” or “Aruru has a wardrobe malfunction.” (Note: Aruru only provides fanservice in the hardest difficulty setting. You need to work to get your lolicon indulgances.)

image

As for the tactical RPG aspect, the game tosses the player into scripted battles similar to a Final Fantasy Tactics mold, expect all but three characters are carbon copies of each other and can only attack and occasionally special attack. Eruru heals instead of attacks. Kamyu and Urutorri can cast spells. That’s it. Everyone else from Benawi to Oboro just attacks. Sure, they have attack, defense, and magic defense modifiers and these can be improved through points earned for battle victories, but you’ll soon realize that attack is the only important trait. Why? Experience is doled out based on damage done, and the only thing exp is good for is to increase hitpoints. So basically, increasing attack improves both attack and survivability. There’s also elements, but since most of your force is either fire or thunder, it doesn’t make a big difference.

(Contrary to the anime, Oboro ends up being the second most powerful character due to how fast he can improve his modifiers. Karura, though, is the MVP if you just dump points only into her attack. By the last boss, I was able to solo him with just Karura.)

Tactics and strategy-wise, there isn’t a lot. Because of the limited attack choices, most fights boil down to concentrating firepower on a single enemy while avoiding getting your own guys cut off. The battles are mostly of the “kill the enemy leader” variety, though there’s a few “get Hakuoro to this location” or “destroy this doodad.” The AI generally goes for your lowest defense-rated character around but isn’t terribly cunning. There’s also a few very boring battles where two characters just whack at each other back and forth. Basically, don’t expect Disgaea-like complexity.

The plot itself isn’t much different from the anime, except various story elements are taken in a different order in the anime (I skipped through most of the kanji-heavy sections… didn’t feel like breaking out a dictionary), and a few things in the anime are curiously different. For instance, let’s just say that Eruru never walks into Karura and Hakuoro on the floor. The twins never score with Oboro, though he does have an h-scene with Hakuoro. Based on how similar the two plots have been, I’m expecting the final few episodes of Shadow Warrior Chronicles to be full of plot twists and turns.

image

Rounding out the game is an omake section where one can browse unlocked art, unlocked h-scenes, and unlocked music. There’s also various tutorials and random mini-game-ish stages. Production values are surprisingly high, though the game could use a bit more polish (and more hotkeys).

image

After playing the game, I can understand why the anime has been enjoyable: good source material that’s essence wasn’t lost in the h-game to anime translation (*cough* Fate/Stay Night *cough*). For people who understand at least a little Japanese and enjoyed the anime, the game is fairly entertaining in both the story and battle aspects. It’s not deep nor necessarily long, but solid, engrossing entertainment for a few hours. And there’s plenty of Touka, Karura, Eruru, and the other girls.

  1. is here a chinese ver availible?

  2. Speaking of Utawarerumono…xD
    http://img92.imageshack.us/img.....401pt7.jpg

  3. One of the fandisks (or maybe it was with the DVD version?) came with a beat ’em up version of the game too… and the PS2 port is getting completely overhauled by the Summon Night folks, so should hopefully be awesome.

  4. that karura pic is really pretty =o

  5. Nice run down Jason. How essential is knowledge of Japanese to play that game? I’ve been thinking about playing it.

  6. If you want to understand what’s going on… pretty vital unless you use a text hooker in which case you get a spewed out half Engrish version.

If you just want to see the battles and whatnot, Japanese knowledge is pretty much a non-entity. I can think of one battle that isn’t obviously “Go to this tile” or “Kill all the enemies” or “survive for X turns”… and that battle is “get the fuck off the river.” That… would be about it.

  7. Do you thin that when they boot the anime over here (U.S.) they’ll also bring over the game as well? I can see them cutting out the H-scenes (as per normal visual novel comes to America fashion, Hour Glass of Summer, I’m looking in your direction > . >) This sounds like a great RPG.

  8. >> How essential is knowledge of Japanese to play that game?

You don’t need a lot for the battle scenes. If you want to enjoy the story, you’ll need at least knowledge of kana, a decent vocabulary, and rudimentary kanji ability and fill in the blanks with the anime sequences. You do need either a Japanese install of Windows or knowledge of how to use AppLocale to get it to run.

    >> Do you thin that when they boot the anime over here (U.S.) they’ll also bring over the game as well?

Probably not… though, M$, I beg you! Utawarerumono for the 360! Your stock price hasn’t budged in months!

  9. >> “Karura, though, is the MVP if you just dump points only into her attack. By the last boss, I was able to solo him with just Karura.”

    Hahahahahahah wow!

Something (Karura being utterly broken) had been respected in the anime.
Will she take out the final boss alone in anime too? Hmmm.

  10. Karura’s not -that- broken. In my game, I built her a little differently, and she ended up just behind Touka and Oboro for raw power due to their far superior speed. The mages are simply godawful though. And the last boss just kind of sits there and lets you wail on it before unleashing an attack that hits -everybody-, so HP and raw damage ends up being far more important than defense or magic resistance, which is where Karura lacks. Not like the game has many mages for that to even be an issue though.

  11. Actually, I think the twins scored twice with oboro.

  12. Hmm, mine is the old version not the renewal game. Seems like there are new pics for the renewal version (dang, I missed out on Aruruu). Well the battle is simple but I really like the timed combos of the characters. Especially Oboro since he has the most number of combo hits.

  13. Naw, if you can make every character hit 99 attack, you’re pretty much guaranteed a clear. The AI becomes horribly cunning at the hardest difficulty though.

Jason, you might want to give it a shot. >=)

  14. The AI is awesome at 5th difficulty. Anyone got the hidden one?

Jason, about time. Want the battle version?

  15. You missed the the part where it was implied that the twins had their way with Oboro, because there wasn’t any CG of the scene, only lots and lots of kanji dealing with the aftermath… so to speak.

  16. The more I think about Visual Novel Tactical RPGs, the more I want this game. Anyway, let me just throw this Haruhi Meido pic for good measure.

    http://img388.imageshack.us/im.....164gp7.jpg

  17. >> Jason, about time. Want the battle version?

Um, not really. I’d rather try to get Higurashi Daybreak running on my PC. ;)

    >> You missed the the part where it was implied that the twins had their way with Oboro

Have we ever settled the question of the twin’s gender? I think this is _much_ more intersting than anything else going on in anime right now.

    >> Anyway, let me just throw this Haruhi Meido pic for good measure.

Maybe I should start pimping the Underground Mailing List here…

  18. Whoa! The game looks awesome. Meh want it~~

  31. Is this a wordpress blog? or some other software?

  32. I could try and make some well-formed screen shots, and translate them for some of you who want them. It will take time, however. So be patient!

  35. Heh, I just started playing and my advice to everyone is: Screw reading, i damn near broke my finger trying just to get though it fast. And so far, there’s been like, 40 minutes of clicking, and one battle. Someone get me a doctor now >.> I think my finger is broken, It actually hurts so much I’m using my other hand to click now =.=

  36. Oh, and sorry for double comment. I don’t really care about the English patch but anyone mind posting up a link if they see an UNCENSOR patch? Yes, I am a sick pervert. Shoot me >.>

  37. Can’t you just download the hentai images? I found a torren t containg all the images of this game INCLUDING the hentai part. But of course I won’t say where I found it… wouldn’t that be against the rules?

Anyway, yes indeed you are a sick pervert, but we love you so much so we won’t shoot you :P

(Note: I’m not HOMO. I just like huging people…yeah…huging >.>)

  38. yeah just finished the game myself pretty awesome. I played the translated chinese version but i hear that mirror moon/ revolve translation (The group that translated tsukihime and fate stay night) are helping with the english translation of utawarerumono.

  39. need more!!

  40. oh my…did you actaully say that oburo and Hakumo have a H scene together…..
now when you say that do you mean Yaoi or 3some(involving some girl) H scene?
    i really wanna get this!

  41. are you actaully saying that Oboro and Hakumo got it on in a Hscene?

  42. [quote comment=”131405″]Can’t you just download the hentai images? I found a torren t containg all the images of this game INCLUDING the hentai part. But of course I won’t say where I found it… wouldn’t that be against the rules?

    well yeah on torrents i’m sure ^__^;
but isnt it more fun and rewarding to work for the Hscenes?

  43. So…

I think the “introduction” doesn’t give the right picture about the game.

For first elements do affect damage, althou on easy difficulty setting not too much. On higher difficulty settings… right element cause like double damage and with the opposite only half.

The element circle goes like this (complete opposite of games like ragnarok):
    Earth>Fire>Water (Blue lightning)>Wind (The whirlwind)>Earth
So basicly earth does extra damage on fire, fire on water and so on.
Fire does reduced damage on earth, earth on wind and so on.

There are also dark and light elements.
Dark does some slight extra damage on fire and earth when light gives slight extra damage on water and wind. Both dark and light do extra damage on each others.

About hakuoros element. Some guides say that he doesnt have one… in fact he does. Its just that its random between normal elements. This is marked with ?-mark.

There are also some opponents in the game who dont have element at all.

For characters Karura, Touka, Oboro and Dorii are absolutelly my favourites. As for mages I dont know since I didnt really figure if its Mdef (lowest of stats in character screen) or Attack (highest one) that affects spell stength, and I didnt use em if I could choose other characters.

But I do know they get better spells trought base level. And I saw the last spell Urotorii got in the game, as used against me, and simply put… it was awesome. Had to kill her imediatelly after that.

But I think its the ATTACK stat since attack increases Eruru’s (or Elulu if you prefer) healing power. And I figure thats magic in game.

Also the game is quite difficult (at least some battles) on higher difficulty settings. So you have to stop to think strategy, elements, sequence and formation of your party once in while. Especially on harder settings.

Character development… ah yes. The experience is really dished out by damage done (or amouth of healing done for Eruru) so attackers are on high advance on this game. After missions you can always boost your attack, defence or magic defence of your character.

There is also Combo (The first one from top on character stats) stat (levels 1 – 4) wich is really expencive to boost but worth it when you have high enough attack. This is because if you have boosted your combo to highest level you can attack like 3 times in row with one character and after it do the “ultimate” attack IF you have your combo bar and MAXED.

To make it clear for everyone, ultimate attack requires both combo STAT at maximum (most of time its level 4) and combo bar (the green bar at your characters stat screen) at maximum.

To make combo attack you must simply attack enemy, then click the enemy again when you see the white (or orange if its combo finish) circle at the right time. Using combo attacks with white circles doesnt drain your combo bar. If fact combo bar gets boost every time you attack enemy. Using combo finish, meaning you managed to click all the whites in row, then click the orange, drains combo bar but also launches the combo finish attack or ultimate attack at highest combo level. Both require maxed combo bar.

In case of ultimate attack your character does special move that often does at least double damage the damage of you normal attack.

Combo attacks get reduced damage thou, thats why you should get some attack first and not rush for combo.
For most charactersIt goes like this if I remember correctly (Oboro has four strikes combo and after that the ultimate):
Nomal attack > first combo > Second combo > Third combo > Ultimate
    100% > 50% > 25% > 12,5% > Ultimate (Varies from 200% to like 400% I think. Once my Karura did like 1114 damage with ultimate)

I have completed the game my self. And the game really explained some things I were wondering in anime.

For those who watched anime… please note that ANIME IS BASED ON THIS GAME not the opposite. Meaning this is the REAL story. >_> Hentai parts are (mostly) part of the story.

About Hentai parts… oh yes this is the part you all like… Well.. not much about them… Just that “Oboro scored with twins” stuff…. THEY ARE MALE. THE TWINS ARE MALES IN THE GAME FFS. And there is no hentai scene about Oboro and the twins. Or Hakuoro and Oboro. Eww…

Thou there are some “hints” in dialogues about Oboro using them “as a play thing.”

There was also someone (I dont remember if it was here or on some other forums) who said he “broke his finger” while clicking the dialogues away. Well… DONT CLICK XD.

If you dont understand or just dont care about dialogues use CTRL-key. CTRL-key speeds up about everything in game. And I mean everything. Not easy to combo if you are pressing ctrl all the time XD

Well. Thats about it. I hope this helped someone. ^^

  44. This Is not chinese Language… Its Japanese…

  45. Just so you know it, the english patch is now out. http://mirrormoon.org/

  46. where can i download this game?

  47. Ah… Utawarerumono what a game, isn’t it? I finished twice, Normal and Hard Mode. But I wanna unlock all of the 13 titles. But it’s dificult speciali in the battle called “Hunter, Hunted”. Please if anyone knows how unlock the titles, I mean a walthrough… battlethrough please tell me. My e-mail is: maxi_eks@hotmail.com The dificult thing to me is to train stats you know, to unlock the 2nd title you have to finish the game without pausing and usind ultimates techiniques.
“I can understand why the anime has been enjoyable: good source material that’s essence wasn’t lost in the h-game to anime translation (*cough* Fate/Stay Night *cough*).” Heeeyyyy, do you wanna to be mana filled? XD

  48. the twins are males.. zzzzz

  49. LOL…..It’s been years and Now I’m going to play it….

Too low on information….thanks for your quick introduction and “One who played it all” for the strategy provided. ^.^

  50. The twins are NOT male. Unless the english translation was futzed up somehow (found here: http://mirrormoon.org/projects/utawarerumono), I clearly remember a scene where Hakuoro finds out the twins are female (he had previously made the mistake of thinking they were male). There is a whole set of dialogue about how surprised Hakuoro is to find out their real gender. I remember this because I had made the mistake of thinking they were male as well, and after that scene I was hoping some of the mosaic’d out cgs were a threesome sequence.

There is also a scene where Oboro implies that he is sleeping with them both, although there is NO actual cg. Neither is there any cg of Oboro and Hakuoro.

As for strategy, “One who played it all” is correct, attack does level up magic user’s magic attacks. The white mage (Urutorii or Urotorio or something like that) probably shouldn’t be used, due to her high cost of attack (takes more BP to level it up). If there were more than two or three levels that used mages, she might be an effective magic tank (if you could get them to attack her and only her, which might be tricky because of the area of effect of most spells).
However, the black mage, (Karura? I forget) has a very low attack cost and spells that cover a wider area than her counterpart’s. If you aren’t a powergamer purist who only uses the characters that have the most natural advantages, she is definitely worth a try, because you can power up her spells quite a lot. You also don’t have to worry about boosting her tech, as she is fragile and should not be on the frontlines melee attacking most of the time.

The only drawback to using her is that there are some levels (most notably near the end of the game) where you are unable to use her due to story reasons.

  51. Hey anyone played the ps2 version of the game? good fun with battle voices and combination attacks, especially Aruruu’s + Touka’s frist version =)

btw for anyone that might have played the ps2 version do u know what these items do? the faq on gamefaq’s covers most of the games details very well but for 1 item it doesn’t do what it was described to do and another one im not sure about.

祭祀の枝 – Ritual Branch – These sets of items are supposed to prevent skill loss, but i don’t understand in the guy’s faq what he meant by ‘Stages.’ EG – prevent skill loss by 4 stages.

戦舞の瑠璃 – Lapis Lazuli of the War Dance – Supposed to let you start a battle with max energy but when i was using it in skirmish it wasn’t working at all.

  52. I thought that the scene where Hakuoro finds out the twins’ gender was the other way around; he thought they were girls and Oboro confirms they are male.
