momentum for october

Objects in moe tend to stay in moe, and nekomimi meido at rest tend to stay moe unless an outside force acts upon tmem.

Since everyone is going nuts over the new season, I thought it would be a change of pace to go over the past season (Summer 06). Don’t worry though. I’m working on a new thin slicing post for the new season, and it’s a doozy. Over 20 shows covered thus far… like 30 more to go. Sigh. I’ll keep this short.

Who’s got mo’?

Muteki Kanban Musume: Welcome, Miki, to the Emo Facial Distortion Pantheon. You earned it.

(I love sleeper hits like Muteki Kanban Musume. They’re generally the shows that get like zero hype while people fawn over the obvious remakes and sequels. Who would have thought that Muteki would be a stronger series than HCII a year ago?)

Zero no Tsukaima: Sorry, Louise, but you’re a few votes short of getting into the Emo Facial Distortion Pantheon. I think the time spent as Love-Love Louise hurt you in this department, but, otherwise, a fun series for an otherwise lackluster summer season.

Innocent Venus: Fairly gripping, even with all the cliches being tossed around. Episode 8 was most definitely a turning point for the better.

Who’s got no mo’?

Welcome to the NHK: Too many random changes from the manga that just doesn’t need to be made. The latest change in how episode 14 gets resolved is probably the last straw for me– just an inexplicable change– why couldn’t they just leave the semi-touching “Tada ima” alone? Gah. Gonzo can’t be trusted. Ever. I hope they don’t get any more plum franchises to grind into the dirt anymore. Keep that in mind when you watch Pumpkin Scissors.

Chokotto Sister: For being beyond disappointing. Tamaki-neechan has already sent Choko an obligatory “Welcome to the club!” telegram by now.

Coyote Ragtime Show: CRS reminds me of Poochie from The Simpsons. “Hey! I have this great idea! Let’s make an anime about a goth loli?” “Just one? Why not two?” “Awesome! Let’s not stop there– get this: four goth lolis!” And so on. In other words, anime shouldn’t come form a boardroom meeting.

Mushishi: Licensed. By who? Rumors currently point to Funimation. Can you imagine if Funimation manages to license Mushishi, Haruhi, and Kanon? Would anime bloggers unite and try to petition them to not suck?

AoMM: If I get a mulligan for my Spring 06 thin slicing, 1 through 5 would look like: Haruhi, Black Lagoon, Ouran, Utawarerumono, and Planet of the Beast King (which I didn’t even rank). At least I got Disgaea right by sticking it dead last. Hopefully the upcoming Fall 06 one will be better.

  1. You know, I’d have used one of the other Miki shots for her emo face. Maybe one of the ones from Ep 12, where she’s going for the Ramen Poster Girl contest?

  2. I agree with Haesslich on the issue of Miki’s pic for emo facial contortion though I am more partial to the cabbage one or the toothy one from ep 9.

I look forward the thin slicing of the fall season, I could use some good news I just got volunteered for something.

Still this rumor of Funimation has me worried, makes me regret not taking that big box of kevlar helmets that was being tossed out.

  3. Eh? Why are people worried about Funimation?

Funimation is probably the all around best american company right now. Basically all their releases in the last several years have been flawless.

  4. >>> I think the time spent as Love-Love Louise hurt you in this department,

Although I like Siesta better, if I had to choose the most memorable frame in ZnT, it is when Love Drugged Louise looks at Saito with those longing eyes.

  5. I’ll be interested in reading your thoughts on Bartender, but then again, I don’t recall much discussion on slice-of-life shows on AoMM. ^,^;

    Cheers.

  6. i enjoyed CRS ; ;
simple, straight forward anime about hotblooded people doing hot blooded things with alot brainless fanservice(kaboom type, not pantsu type)
though not on the same level as futakoi alt, it’s a change from all the twisted plot

  7. >> “Coyote Ragtime Show: CRS reminds me of Poochie from The Simpsons. “Hey! I have this great idea! Let’s make an anime about a goth loli?” “Just one? Why not two?” “Awesome! Best analogy ever!

  8. Zero would have been +2 if they’d just resolved the Saito-Louise issues. Leaving them acting like retarded 13-year-olds to each other is what ruined it for me. If Louise isn’t going to admit to herself that Saito gave up his chance to return home in order to save her, then Saito needs to call bulls**t on her tsundere act after “the kiss.” A teenager should be able to do that from pride alone, never mind the way Louise keeps sending up smoke signals (literally) whenever she sees Saito with Siesta.

  9. err…”ubu” you kinda forgot THEY ARE LIKE 13! or somewhere around there anyways…and trust me all teenagers are idiots(just like me ^^…er wait…XD) and louise has the most predictable reaction to siesta, actually i saw the same look last week, it was alittle creepy. though i do have to say if saito had called her bluff they would have gotten to real an ending and well this is anime so that just cant happen.

  10. Ramen Fighter Miki? Prepare of the sequel! Burger Flipper miki!
    It’s Berry good!

Japan needs a burger fighter to recover from this!

    I’m loving (or lubbing) it!

  11. Hm…I was under the impression that the ages of the students varied (Kirche seems 18-25), but I had Louise & Saito pegged more at 15 or so. At 13, there wouldn’t be nearly as much point (or humor) in saying she’s flat-chested. Also, she’s a “second year student” with a black cloak, and they seem to be more-or-less following Japanese high school patterns. This would make her upwards of 16-17.

  12. Louise is 16, Saito is 17, Tabitha is 15, Guiche is 17, Kirche is 18, Siesta is 17, Montmorency is 16, Henrietta is 17, etc…

    From Wikipedia.

Just remember this. They are drawn differently in the anime compared to how they were drawn in the novels. The world of ZnT is actually pretty dark. Imagine taking the plot of LotR and turning it into a Sing & Dance comedy. That’s how different the mood is.

    Cheers.

  13. >>I’ll be interested in reading your thoughts on Bartender

Is it just me or does that bartender guy have the Yaranaika face?

Also… the discussion of the word ‘bartender’ at the end was teh suck. srsly. they are murdering the king’s english.

  14. >>At least I got Disgaea right by sticking it dead last. Hopefully the upcoming Fall 06 one will be better.

I never understood what people had against Disgaea. Did you even bother to watch the second half of this anime? Seriously, I see no reason why Suzumiya Haruhi would be better than Disgaea.

  15. Prinnies running away to rebirth their souls on the night of the red moon with that plot suprise VS. prinnies running away into a floating stadium to build a robot to overthrow the netherworld. The anime just lacked the impact of the game. The random, early, repeated , and haphazardous entrance of gordon and crew, it was like the same as the game only confusingly out of order. I enjoyed the laharl’s younger sibling episode because it was original from the game. But seriously, better than an original sci-fi comedy like haruhi?

  16. I agree with Fencedude: I have no complaints about Funimation. It’s not like US Manga, whose DVDs are always dark and loaded with color fringes.

Actually, I have one complaint about Funimation: why did it take them a year and a half between volumes of the new Tenchi Muyo series? But that’s nothing compared to my “non-release” frustrations relating to ADV, for instance. And the technical aspects of Funimation releases have always been excellent.

Funimation almost always includes more episodes per DVD, too, without increasing their price.

  17. If I was the directing for Funimation if they licensed Haruhi, I would put the DBZ commercials in the MIDDLE of the episodes; most especially in Live Alive right at the high part of God Knows. That way, fans will actually buy MORE DVDs because they’ll need them to burn in front of Funimation HQ for their protests. Oh my freakin’ God I’m so smart.

  18. >>>Eh? Why are people worried about Funimation?

    >>>Funimation is probably the all around best american company right now. Basically all their releases in the last several years have been flawless.

You’re f’ing kidding me right? Look at freakin One Piece…those rat bastard butcher my favorite show… then repeatedly rape it dead carcass over and over…

  19. Speaking of the Emo Facial Distortion Pantheon, were you going to update the caption for the second picture? Y’know, because it ain’t her, it’s the other?

  20. >>>You’re f’ing kidding me right? Look at freakin One Piece…those rat bastard butcher my favorite show… then repeatedly rape it dead carcass over and over…

The problem is Funimation is the distributor for 4 Kids, who did rape the show.

  21. You’re f’ing kidding me right? Look at freakin One Piece…those rat bastard butcher my favorite show… then repeatedly rape it dead carcass over and over…

Before you go off on something, you should first attempt to have a fucking clue what you are talking about.

Funimation has NOTHING to do with the One Piece adaption. AT ALL.
