Shirley discovers the true identity of Zero, Jack Bauer-style.

image

Two great NFL playoff games? The return of Jack Bauer from a Nike factory in China? What’s another 24 minutes in front of the TV hoping for some crazy lesbian stalker action? Sadly, Sunrise makes the ball-busting decision to not have Nina show up (even at Shirley’s father’s funeral) and not capitalize on her jaw dropping performance last episode. Reminds me of San Diego not capitalizing on any of the Tom Brady interceptions.

Well, first things first, new OP and ED with episode 13. The new OP, Kaidoku Funou, really, really hurts my ears. The scene where Suzaku is dancing with Euphie reminded me of Kira and Lacus, only Euphie wasn’t falling out of her dress like Lacus. And there’s a lot of posing and flexing by Lancelot… it’s like they’re not selling enough toys and model sets so now they have to pimp the mecha more. (Though I wonder if CLAMP helped with the mecha design as well.) Still, I would have preferred if they used Mellencamp’s “This is ouuuur country!” and introduced the Chevy Silverado KnightMare. The new ED, Mosaic Kakera, doesn’t seem to be an improvement or a regression… it was a run for no gain.

I guess that this episode is about Lulu’s commitment to the path that he’s chosen. He (as well as the people around him) are shaken up by Shirley’s father’s death, and they question the routes that they’re on: Lulu for his destructive ambitions; Karen for following Lulu; Suzaku for mindlessly following orders; C.C. for hanging onto Lulu despite his womanizing; Villette for her path different from Orange-kun’s; and, Shirley for believing in Lulu. All but the last seem to be resolved this episode after microseconds of angst. Literally, Lulu, Karen, Suzaku, C.C., and Villette all fortify their resolves that what they are doing is the right coarse of action. Sunrise must be taking inspiration from George W. In the end, nothing really changes as Lancelot and Guren Nishiki pwn the other mechs, fight each other to a stalement, Zero sacrifices yet more pawns for his goals, and Sunrise puts two characters in an awkward situation.

One of the things that’s keeping me interested in Code Geass is how everyone will react once they see who Zero really is. Now, the first person has found out… Shirley of all people, and now she has the chance to avenge her father or spare the life of the man she loves. Good ol’ Sunrise melodrama packed in 24 minute, digestable packets. But, knowing Sunrise, Shirley won’t kill Lulu. After all, he is Lelouch of the rebellion.

(If this were a Gonzo series, he’s a dead man.)

A few leftover points…

image

Pizza Hut is running a special right now. Any size pizza, any toppings for just $10. I have no clue why I’m mentioning this fact right now.

image

What the heck is this thing that C.C. redeemed with her Pizza Hut points? It doesn’t even have a Pizza Hut logo on it… and the hat with that rounded face reminds me of Stallone in Rocky Balboa.

image

Plus that stuffed animal isn’t even available as one of the Code Geass promotional toys. However, though, a Lulu action figure is. I can see the winds shifting in Code Geass when we’re denied Karen fanservice and instead get two shirtless shots of Lulu instead. I just hope Nina can help sway the winds back the right way.

image

I like where this is going… C.C. has really stepped up her jealousy of Lulu. “You made out with her in the rain!” Was she spying on him too? Great. Karen’s going to end up being the sanest of all of them… coincidentally, the poll has C.C. and Karen fairly neck-and-neck but both are so far ahead of the others. Not only that, Suzaku is beating Shirley (and Millay was even leading Shirley for a while). Poor Shirley– her father’s dead, killed by her lover, and now she’s trailing badly in the AoMM poll.

(As for Shirley spying on Lulu, it just proves that Lulu is no Jack Bauer Light-o. A real special agent criminal mastermind wouldn’t allow himself to be tailed.)

Karen is awesome. But needs more emo facial distortion.

I feel revolted at having to post a picture containing Nina, but nevertheless, she did turn up at the funeral.

    Yes. Yes, you have. :P :p :P :p

    Narf.

  2. Oh, and about Cheese-kun, this webpage should clarify what it is all about,

    Pizza Hut Supports The Rebellion!

Remember, we were shown C.C. collecting redemption points for a Cheese-kun in one of the earlier episodes.

    Cheers.

  3. Wait… Nina WAS at the funeral. Look at 3:15 of the anime if you’re watching the subbed version.

Otherwise, I agree on Lulu’s lack of secret sneaking ability, but then again he could have perfectly good ability, just not against the all powerful Sunrise forced plot development!

  4. Sad girls in snow! Wait… I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve forgotten something…

Kanon could use some good old Nayuki or Akiko (or both)table humping action.

  5. I have to admit, I’m a sucker for Sunrise’s melodrama. I was on the edge of my seat at the ending there…even though I knew this was going to happen like three episodes ago. Sunrise are excellent story tellers, in that they suck you in and make you forget, for the moment, that everything is contrived.

Afterward, you feel violated like a hawt hotel employee after a basketball game…

  6. >>Kanon could use some good old Nayuki or Akiko (or both)table humping action.

synchronised mother-and-daughter table humping? good god somebody needs to draw this as doujinshi.

  7. The thing C.C. was holding is a cheese-kun from Pizza-Hut Japan. It’s a real product.

  8. So wrong at the last part. Shirley need a boxcutter!!! not a gun!!!

  9. Nah. Kaede holds exclusive rights to them.

    Right, Kaede?

    ^^;

  10. I hated the new OP when I first heard it… But due to the fact I “kind of” like the chorus, I know it means that soon it’ll be stuck in my head and I’ll be anxiously waiting for the full version to be released (same thing happened to me with the GaoGaiGar OP).

While having Lulu as a character who make mistakes (in contrast to Light-o) makes him more interesting… doesn’t it seem like he’s making TOO MANY mistakes? What is this? The FOURTH time he got wtfpwned in a fight now? Hell, I think in this episode’s firefight he’s the ONLY Black Knight member who got taken out.
You’d think by now he’d realize he’s better off commanding from his pimp trailer rather then being anywhere near the frontlines (he’s like that guy in Gears of War multiplayer who always charges in and tries to chainsaw people, but got wasted before he even reaches them).

  11. The last scene with C.C. was interesting. I don’t think she’s ever shown real interest in Lulu except as a Geass holder. Then she says something about never making the same mistake again, dresses up to be unrecognizeable, and then they cut in shot of a sleazeball walking in the same park. Will it be Geasscest? Will she melt his brain with that nightmare vision? Can’t wait to find out.

And I definitely don’t understand the CG haremette poll. Karen as a contender I can understand: she’s built, she’s got a strong personality, and she is very cute and loyal around Zero. C.C. is… kinda there. Eating pizza. Dressing up as a guy, once in a while to change things up. Millay is fun as one who rocks the boat, with a bright personality and oh god, legs. But personally, Shirley is my favorite. Very good looking, cute and kind, she is always there to support Lulu and possesses actual emotion. So, I clearly am watching a different show from the other voters, or at least watching for very different things…

  12. Agreed, I’m deeply disturbed at the direction that the show is taking. All these hawt females and we get shots of the male character in the buff? What is this, some kind of shoujo anime? Last I remember, it had mecha, a Pizza Hut-scarfing mysterious girl, and a racist chick getting off on a table corner. I’m pretty sure those don’t show up in shoujo stuff…

  13. >>Shirley is my favorite. Very good looking, cute and kind, she is always there to support Lulu and possesses actual emotion.
Interesting, as I first hated Shirley, she seemed pretty damn annoying (this was before I saw the episode where Nina actually talked), but she’s starting to grow on me, but damn if I still don’t like Millay the most. Oh, that figure… Oh, those legs… (finds a table corner)

  14. sense i started watching code grass i have gone to pizza hut every day after work , i cant stop i am addicted to there pizza now =\ some one save me!

  15. Also, anyone else find that boat used by the Order of the Black Knights really funny? The way the robots are all lined up, it looks like there might have been some OH GEASS NO! mecha moments in there… And for some reason, the boat really reminds me of some cheap kid’s toy.

And please get to Kanon! I want a venue to whine about the ending of the Mai arc.

  16. I just realized something and I’m not sure if it’s an important or moot point, but when and if this show is liscensed for the states, are they going to have to remove all the pizza hut references? OR will pizza hut captiliza on the U.S.’s otaku niche and run with it? Will this lead to liscense issues?

  17. Is it just more or does Cheese-kun look like one of those Chupacabra from the newer(*cough* falling apart) Negima series?

  18. “Sad girls in snow! Wait… I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve forgotten something…”

    Maybe a sad girl?
    http://www.livejournal.com/use.....6/12043466
    There. Now C.C. is sad.

  19. …I’ve never wished more stongly for a Gonzo production than right now…

  20. Figures that the first shower scene in like, 12 episodes is one of Lulu.

  21. When I first saw the character designs for the show, back when my initial reaction was “What, another Sunrise mecha?” and I had yet to realize the joy in anticipating the inevitable Sunrise shark jumping (still hasn’t happened yet, but next episode’s looking promising), Shirley was the bishoujo I immediately gravitated to. I’ve always had a thing for hot redheads, and the green eyes are just gravy. There’s also the fact that she looks exactly like Orihime Inoue, who is possibly the only reason I’m still watching/reading Bleach.

Then, once I realized how much fun everyone else was having anticipating the worst, I figured I might as well join in, and was thus introduced to Millay-oneesama. And it was lust at first sight. Those legs…that face…that ass…those legs…those boobs…those legs… Never have I more wanted to be an anime lesbian in my life.

I can see what C.C.’s attraction is. She’s yet another Nagato/Rei style Mysterious Girl archetype, only a little more talkative and erm…”mature.” I can also see why Karen is so popular. She’s hawt, she’s GAR, she’s got the nicest set of DD’s this side of Millay’s perfect D’s, and she’s had a nude shower scene. I’d totally hit that. But can someone tell me why Millay isn’t even top 3 in this poll? I appear to have underestimated this audience’s appreciation for the designated yuri magnet. Betcha if she had a penis she’d have 50% of the vote…

  22. I was about to choose Karen in the poll until I saw the new ending where Millay was costume-raping Shirley. Millay it is.

Why does Lulu never factor in Lancelot in his plans? I mean, Brittania has realized by now that, after saving their asses two or three times already, that Lancelot must be involved in all battles. And yet, Lulu is still a friggin’ moron who seems to forget Lancelot exists until the last possible moment.

As for dealing with Shirley, Lulu can just Geass her. There’s no big problem there. The issue is how he’s going to do it while he’s unconscious and how Cornelia is free to just walk over and apprehend him.

  23. Oh, another thing is I can’t wait for this “Rakshata” scientist woman. Seems pretty hot as well.

  24. Suzaku’s still beating Millay, myo!

    This is unforgivable, myo!

There’s no justice in the world, myo!

    *glances at Epic Confusion comments*

There’s No Justice In The World, Myo!

  25. Well, at least the speculative new Death Note OP isn’t as bad as Jinn’s… I actually liked the song in Blood+, but this one is just terrible.

This episode has taught me to watch one Sunrise series at a time, all the time.

Blog needs more Sad Girls In Snow. I have no idea how Shiori, Nayuki, and Ayu can top Mai’s story.

  26. So Kanon Post Deprived…*twitch*

  27. “As for dealing with Shirley, Lulu can just Geass her. There’s no big problem there.”

Actually, from what we’ve seen of the Geass power, it only makes the victim forget what happened during their lack of control, and maybe a second or two before. If, conceivably, he were to use the Geass on her after he regains consciousness, there’s no guarantee she’d forget seeing him as Zero. Remember that Viletta became so fixated on Lulu after she “lost” her knightmare frame back in episode one. She doesn’t remember that he’s the one that did it, but she does remember he was the only person around. Personally, I don’t think he’s going to use Geass on Shirley; either he’ll decide not to for some reason, or he’ll try and won’t be able to make her forget, or someone else will get involved and he won’t get the chance to. She could always freak out and run away, giving us a few episodes of her knowing he’s Zero without him knowning she knows, which could be fun, but that seems a little too subtle.

  28. Actually, I think that last scenario you mentioned is most likely. It’s happened in many series in the past. As for Geass not making her forget, remember that Lulu doesn’t have to make her forget. Seeing as how long a Geass actually lasts, he can bind her to a command of silence.

Of course, whether or not he has the will is another story. What I’m most curious about is the next episodes title: Geass vs Geass. Obviously, it’ll be a kind of inner battle with himself, but what will he gain? An upgrade to his Geass?

  29. remember the episode with the cat. lulu geassed two passerbys into forgetting they saw the mask.

the geass works long as you tell the target to forget as a direct command. the reason viletta has memories of lulu is because lulu’s command at the time was ‘gimme your mech’, with no mention of forgetting anything.

  30. did u guys see the OP?????!!!!!
Its feakingly reminding me of Strike Gundam. Man im going to make an invoke/ignited/ zips mtv for this anime ^0^

  31. >>You’d think by now he’d realize he’s better off commanding from his pimp trailer rather then being anywhere near the frontlines (he’s like that guy in Gears of War multiplayer who always charges in and tries to chainsaw people, but got wasted before he even reaches them).

I think it has something to do with what he said back in Ep. 1 during the chess match. Something along the lines of “If the king doesn’t lead, his subjects will not follow”.

  32. “Obviously, it’ll be a kind of inner battle with himself”

    Heh.

Ever think that C.C. saying ‘I won’t make the same mistakes again’ had something to do with the Geass and possibly a previous user? It’d explain the new skeeze-ball as well; or at least why they keep cutting to him right after showing c.c.

  33. >>So Kanon Post Deprived…*twitch*

    I agree

  34. You all missed the best part. Lulu has C.C. pinned to the bed and she says, “Don’t disappoint me.” Combined with the giant Pizza Hut box sitting on the bed and the ridiculous looking cheese-kun the whole scene was non-stop hilarity. I only wish Lulu put the moves on her.

It’s safe to say C.C. and I were both disappointed.

  35. >> She could always freak out and run away, giving us a few episodes of her knowing he’s Zero without him knowning she knows, which could be fun, but that seems a little too subtle.

I vote for another “Nina” scene. There are still three more corners at the table.

    >> >>So Kanon Post Deprived…*twitch*

I double-agree. We needs us more sad suicidal girls in snow.

  36. We really haven’t had any deaths yet in the main cast, and given that this is sunrise, we’re past due. I’m taking the long odds and guessing that Lulu geass Shirley into suicide, or in some other fashion manages to remove her from the cast.

  37. >> Sunrise must be taking inspiration from George W. In the end

Because the alternate world Britannia also consists of Canada and America, Sunrise had to look at examples of characteristics show by its people to think up the character development. Striving to be as resourceful as possible, they might even go to browsing people`s blogs to understand their minds, allowing the production of realworld-like personalities.

  38. “Striving to be as resourceful as possible, they might even go to browsing people`s blogs to understand their minds, allowing the production of realworld-like personalities.”

Next week, Lulu gripes at Karen about how weak her emo facial contortions are and insists that C.C. dress up as a meido.

  39. This is something really important i found out. When one of my friends came back from the local Pizza Hut in Tokyo i saw advertisement for Code Geass: Leelouch of the Rebellion on the pizza box.

That is a sign of Pizza Hut in Japan being indeed serious with advertisement in anime. My comment could be shorted to: OH MY GEASS!!!!!!

By the way, C.C is hot and Shirley should not die in next episode.

  40. Code Geass is by far the most over the top series this season. It has everything! Pizza Hut, Unrealistic Hair Colours, FLOW, Mecha, Rollerblades, Royalty, Sharingan Clones, Lesbians, Drug Abuse, Masturbation, Ass Exposition, Shower Scenes, Rebellions, Terorists, Katanas, Batman’s Grappling Hook on Mecha, An Academy, Emo Facial Distortion, over the top outfits (Zero seems to be the most normal of the leaders) and painfull secondary character deaths.

  41. Lulu should try using his power on himself.
    Self-hypnosis anyone?

That, or get some damn Mech lessons. He’s horrible, for such a genius!
