AoMM presents Seven Lives Exposed, Code Geass Edition.

In this episode, we go straight from the quickie life and resurrection and death of Mao to exposing Suzaku as the pilot of Lancelot. The pacing on Code Geass is just a bit too fast. It’s like that they can’t have an episode pass without some major revelation now. It’s been just three episodes since Shirley got geassed, but it feels like thirty. This is normally not a problem, but if the series has to run a certain number of episodes, it tends to over exhaust the possible storylines. A great example is The OC. In the first two seasons, they blew through almost every possible scenario from seven years of 90210. They didn’t pace themselves. They had characters develop and solve drinking problems in the same episode whereas it would have span a seven episode arc in 90210. I think this is a big reason why the plots got more and more desperate until they had to play the hawt lesbian card in The OC. Code Geass just needs to slow down a bit and let things simmer. For example, in Kanon, they didn’t just introduce Shiori when her arc came up… she’s had a small but re-occurring role all the way up to her arc. We didn’t get ambushed by Shiori in the middle of the series much like how Mao ambushed poor C.C. and Lulu.

Code Geass right now feels like everything is being made up along the way. With the second recap episode following 17, it’s pretty easy to guess that they are making it up all the way. Series that are generally well planned out and hit their air dates don’t have two recap episodes during the first 17 episodes. The sad thing is that everything is still predictable in typical Sunrise faction. Oh! Euphie picked Suzaku has a knight! What a shock! Or somehow the Elevens will magically develop better mecha than the Britiannians over the course of five episodes (which is an eternity by Code Geass standards).

Suzaku

He definitely gets the short end of the stick. Most of his secrets are already out:

1. Killed own father at the age of ten. Scored with his mom. The anime Oedipus Rex.

2. Pilot of Lancelot, archnemesis of Karen and Lulu

3. Harbors romantic attachment to Lulu.

image
Lulu

Lulu’s been pretty good at keeping his own secrets and using the secrets of others against them. He’d make a great presidential run advisor:

1. Harbors romantic attachment to Suzaku.

2. Megalomaniac.

3. Zero.

4. Prefers Papa John’s over Pizza Hut.

image
Karen

I’m very disappointed that the new plug suits are tasteful and don’t have a lower neckline. I’m sure you are too:

1. Secret crush on Zero.

2. Secret hatred for Lulu.

3. Open to the prospect of a Zero/Lulu/herself threesome.

4. Mom is a strung out drug addict meido.

image
Euphie

By far the worst public speaker of a politician since George W. Bush:

1. Crush on Suzaku.

2. Inherited Lacus’ outfits from the Gundam Seed wardrobe garage sale.

3. Has set the record for “Most male partners in a hour by a member of Brittennia royalty” award, beating out Clovis by five Minnesota Vikings players.

image
Nina

(Doesn’t Karen look a bit, uh, strung-out in the background here?)

The one that we’re all rooting for to follow in Shizuru’s footsteps:

1. Tables. Can’t get enough of them.

2. Will rape Euphie if left alone in a room with her.

image
Shirley

Is Shirley the “heroine” of Code Geass or is it Suzaku:

1. Will re-remember Lulu by the episode 22 because she’s knocked up by Lulu. We’ll get a flashback episode that plays out like the reverse rape in The Wedding Banquet with Lulu thinking of Suzaku the whole time.

2. Prefers the cool refreshing taste of Diet Dr. Pepper.

Nanali

Lastly… the mastermind behind everything. If at the end, Sunrise reveals that Nanali is actually the master puppeteer, I wouldn’t be surprised. Next time on AoMM’s coverage of Code Geass: I cut and paste from old posts to make new ones. Where is your Oharuhi-sama now Ayu-chan! I don’t care anymore. Just shoot me. No way there’s a penis on this. None. I won’t accept it. USO DA!

  1. Suzuka scored with his mom!

  2. hahaha thats what i said , i mean sure i am usaly high when i am watching anime but i KNOW i wopuld remember that

  3. Oh god, that was brilliant. I was laughing the whole way through… and now that it’s been mentioned I have no problems seeing Nanali as the mastermind behind everything… and yes, these new tasteful plug suits are a major abomination…

  4. That was great, thank you for this article. So many funny quotes that I can’t pick a favorite.

  5. Actually, unlike other Sunrise series that don’t plan things out and come up with things as they go along *cough*Mai-Otome*cough*, Code Geass actually already finished the scripts for the first season a while ago. In early January, they had written the scripts up to ep. 23, so they do have things very much planned out, they just chose to have a fast pacing.

  6. Here’s a preview to the Haruhi dub:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtGYqqTcKn0

Haruhi’s voice sucks, doesn’t have the subtle aggressiveness.
Kyon’s voice sucks, isn’t sardonic at all.
    Itsuki’s voice is ok.
    Yuki’s voice can’t tell.
Mikuru’s voice is as high and annoying as the original, is actually pretty good.
Shasimen’s voice is the best of all.

And there you have it. I highly doubt the voices will feel better when the DVD’s come out.

  7. Oh yeah, and Code Geass. Though gg’s new page banner is a killer, they seemed to have backed themselves up pretty badly.

  8. …We aren’t seeing much of Karen nowadays…

    >>Next time on AoMM’s coverage of Code Geass: I cut and paste from old posts to make new ones. Where is your Oharuhi-sama now Ayu-chan! I don’t care anymore. Just shoot me. No way there’s a penis on this. None. I won’t accept it. USO DA!

    XD

These recap episodes are really annoying, and are just an excuse not to pay the artists/animators for an extra two episodes. If people haven’t been watching they can guess at what’s going on, or make it up and it will probably be as feasible as the original story. If they have been watching then they don’t need reminding.

  9. No mention of Orange-kun’s resurrection as William Berkins in the new OP?

  10. Euphie: “Hey, from down there does it look like I’m talking into a bunch of robot penises?”

  11. >>Prefers Papa John’s over Pizza Hut.

Why you Lulu… No one messes with the rebellion!

  12. “3. Has set the record for “Most male partners in a hour by a member of Brittennia royalty” award, beating out Clovis by five Minnesota Vikings players.”

LOL XDD;; So dear old Clovis is still no forgotten. I’m sure he’s having a great time on his ‘beach’.

Also, the reason for why Code Geass has such a fast pace is because it was planned for a full-year slot. Not getting cut up like it is now. Code Geass has tons and tons of plannings, settings and such.(twice the amount of SEED) Sunrise *thought* they would get a full-year slot, but Sat6 was given to Ayakashi and they got a midnight-slot for only half a year. Therefore they had to make adjustments to it – fanservice at random intervals, rushing plot because they absolutely have to give a proper ending to the first season*(Geass is already a fairly tight series for even a whole-year slot). Take this episode for example, if Code Geass were to get a full-year slot, it will be at least divided into two episodes, but because it got a half-year plot, scenes like the one with Suzaku and Toudou’s past can only make 2-3 seconds of airtime. Then because of the rushing, they cut loads of pre-drawn scenes and that resulted in the recaps – they’re there not only to remind old watchers, or to explain things to new watchers, or because they don’t have time to plan the stories, but there because Sunrise doesn’t have enough time to draw its new episodes.

But all the same, it would be so much better if CG could actually give us some information on ‘how’s instead of ‘what’s. The Black Knights expanded overnight. Ha.

  13. “ith the second recap episode following 17, it’s pretty easy to guess that they are making it up all the way”

Actually,I remember reading an interview of the director on Animesuki forum and he said that the scripts were ready until ep20(or something like that).Anyway,it was clear that they aren’t making it up.

  14. >>Prefers Papa John’s over Pizza Hut.

I second that. Papa John’s is the best national pizza chain but the best pizza is in Chicago.

At least Pizza Hut still has dominion over Domino’s.

  15. meanwhile, totally unrelated stuff

    eye candy

  16. OMFG, eye candy.
    /massive nosebleed

  17. Also to be revealed… Nanali as a trap. Oh nooooes, damn you Mai Hime manga!

  18. Tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk; people.

It’s “$UNRI$E.” Spell the word with the dollar sign replacing the “S.”

If there are still people loyal to $unrise after Gabbage $eed Destiny, why?

For the new people who don’t know: Fukuda rushes production for the sequal to $eed (after it’s “success). Shinn Asuka’s voice actor (and Cagalli’s voice actress) says something bad to “screenwriter” Chiaki Morosawa; causing her to write Shinn as a horrible character and the butt of all jokes. The fanbase accepted said “butt of all jokes” via GSD and the NewType magazine.

Shinn’s voice actor had been spat on by anti-Shinn fans. Meanwhile, $eed Destiny becomes mega-freaking-popular in Japan whilst heads of $unrise complain that they can’t sell Gundam to North America. It doesn’t help matters much when Fukuda and Morosawa continued to have these “after-the-fact” interviews to the public. (Not everybody in the anime fan base is stupid, you know.)

  19. “If there are still people loyal to $unrise after Gabbage $eed Destiny, why?”

Because this is a different team, and they made Brilliantly Awesome Planetes? And if that doesn’t count due to having original manga, Infinite Ryvius? (Granted, that’s got pacing problems, but it’s still good) I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m not loyal to Sunrise. I just like to give companies a chance and the benefit of doubt. Everyone fucks up once or twice, even if Sunrise DID fuck up royally.

(I hate Mai-Otome, btw, ditto GSD. Skepticism can come in many forms)

  20. “I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m not loyal to Sunrise. I just like to give companies a chance and the benefit of doubt. Everyone fucks up once or twice, even if Sunrise DID fuck up royally.”

There’s that. And I’m not saying that $unrise can’t make a good series. It’s just that, before Gabbage $eed… I used to like ’em.

And yeah, Mai-ZHime. It had potential (as potpourri lesbian / monsters-and-robots / schoolgirl / maid / requals usually do). But they fumbled the ball by destroying the only “happy couple” worth giving a darn about (Kazuya and Akane). And, probably because it’s pro-moe, the people behind it seem to share this hatred for all things men and male that’s the necessary evil of actual entrtainment.

I need to put money into collecting Scryed and Betterman. :(

  21. “Loyal”? Who is “loyal” to _any_ studio? I watch what I enjoy, even if by the tenth episode they’re phoning in the art (I’m looking at you, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge), and don’t bother with stuff that doesn’t appeal to me (SHNY was great, but I don’t care about Kanon). If you’re “loyal” to a studio, or “anti-loyal” to the extent of refusing to watch something based on the studio, maybe you should take a break from fandom and get some fresh air.

  22. To be fair, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge is using the same style of the manga … its really drawn like that in the manga.

What I dislike is recycle the same animation shoots again and again, Code Geass so far have not done that.

  23. Eye Candy?

When did Yuki modify her Parameter.Bust: Way larger than in the original art.

  24. >>> Eye Candy?
well, butt modification is nowhere near as much as bust modification
in the original art, yuki’s 3 size equal to each other

  25. Okay, I suppose we’re actually on the same page…the feeling of being betrayed is a horrible thing that’s hard to undo. Especially with GSD, haha. (For my part, I stopped watching GSD somewhere around #20 and pretended the series didn’t exist. GS was okay)

  26. >>To be fair, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge is using the same style of the manga … its really drawn like that in the manga.

We must be reading different mangas, because “The Wallflower” manga looks VERY DIFFERENT from the anime.

  27. >>> We must be reading different mangas
    you might actually be
since U.S. release pretty much redid the drawing, and looks alot better than Japan release (even more so if compared to magazine serialization)

  28. Sorry to go off topic, but has anyone seen Mai Otome Zwei 2? Wow…they went from apocalyptic scenario to a random bus hijacking involving a sleepy Arika. (And I’m sure Sergey thinks a Sleepy Arika is OK too.) Then a random fight, and a tiny amount of plot development at the end.

Is it really only gonna be 3 eps long?

  29. Zwei will be 4 episodes, Blade-mun.

  30. And they better toss in more Shizu/Nats soon, or I will most likely implode.

  31. geass19 is… well, interesting

  32. NO GEASS.

    LOL!

  33. Hey when are you likely to blog code geass again. ep18-ep20 is out and subbed. I can’t get enough of your funny blogs.

  34. Just watched ep 22 and my god… what have they done?
Sunrise pulled just about the most terrifyingly horrid plot twist they could pull for this show (even now I’m hoping that the entire episode is simply a nightmare that Lulu had)… the trainwreck has come.

  35. I dunno about that. I welcome Ep22’s plot-progression. :D Asakura Ryoko-types are always welcomed in my book. :)

    Yippee!

  36. i don’t like 22… they frigging killed moe element!
    how could they do that
