lucky ☆ star 7

A Tsukasa is fine too.

(Now that is an epic expression. Not even Kamina-sama can get Yoko to do that, if you know wh– nevermind.)

image

A mundane episode at best. Trying to write about Lucky Star is kinda like writing for an episode of Ghost Whisperer. Maybe you get a good episode once-in-a-while, but most of the time, there’s not much more to say because there wasn’t anything there to begin with. We can only talk about Jennifer Love Hewitt and Konata just so much. Since I don’t have much to add about the episode, I’ll go rank all the Lucky Star girls on AoMM’s PER index.

image
#7. Yui

Just not funny or entertaining.

image
#6. Miyuki

Mikuru minus dominatrix costume raper = Miyuki. Just not the same. Miyuki needs to show up in various (meido, nurse, frog) outfits to win me over.

(Dammit, I knew I should have named this blog iluvmeidowithmelonpan. That’s a great name for a blog! *kicks self*)

image
#5. Konata

Konata just isn’t very funny. I don’t get it. She’s the AoMM of Lucky Star girls… wait a sec…

image
#4. LOL FANG-SENSEI

I demand Churuya-styled 4koma for LOL FANG-SENSEI!

image
#3. Kagami

She reminds me of one of those girls who will eventually turn into one of those wives who bosses her husband around like Uchiyamada’s wife in Great Teacher Onizuka. Bad times. Very bad times. On the other hand, she has the classic ツンデレ personality and may foster lesbian tendancies. Good times. Very good times.

image
#2. Akira

Hilarious. Crazy. Possibly Canadian. She’s great to watch on TV, but I’d be terrified sitting next to her like what Taniguchi has to put up with. I’d feel like a fried chicken drumstick next to John Madden.

(I was terrified of her during this episode’s Lucky Channel and was disappointed that she didn’t stab Taniguchi. She’s the best.)

image
#1. Tsukasa

She’s won me over. Balsamic vinegar 4tw. She’s the least crazy of the girls, seems to be the most open minded, and has a few moe modes. That’s a good thing.

Shooting Stars

The Lucky Star girls love Keroro. Keroro loves Gundam. Therefore, the Lucky Star girls love Gundam. I’ll go put a bullet through my head now.

(We need to complete the circle and have the upcoming Gundam Seed Destiny Zwei OVA imply Shinn pleasuring himself to a Konata doujinshi.)

image

Hare Hare Yukai as Konata’s ringtone… not as awesome as when I had the Sonozaki “USO DA!” as my ringtone. I got so many WTF looks that I eventually changed it to something boring, like the theme to Super Mario Brothers done in a cappella. There are few things in life as magical as having your cell phone shout “USO DA!” during a meeting at work… or watching Shinn with a Konata doujinshi.

image

Watching Tsukasa operate her cell phone was mesmerizing. I must have rewound and watched this scene five times, and I could go back for more. I’m rooting for a similar gag in Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya where Mikuru gets flustered trying to use her time travel device. That’s almost as good as an “USO DA!” ringtone and Shinn enjoying a Konata doujinshi.

Timotei!

Aya Hirano is secreting preparing for Kiddy Grade 2. I was surprised that grape juice wasn’t involved during the Marimite Konata scenes. Though I enjoyed Kagami’s “I’m gonna hurl” response.

(BTW, I love how misleading all the song Engrish is. Gotta give Strato some credit for taking the time to fix up ’em after the OP came out with the printed lyrics.)

image

Flame Haired, Red Hot Eyed Hunter… is that you? Anyway, I’m not sure if it is the same Attack, but I have watched an episode of the live action version about a girl’s volleyball team. The problem was that were just weren’t any volleyball scenes– at least with H2, we got baseball scenes… with Attack, not so much. Anyway, I wouldn’t say that I cried or laughed… I kinda was more like, “Next.”

In any case, for seer dichotomy anime, I’d suggest Higurashi (either laugh at the train wreck, be appalled, or try to figure out the mystery), Fate/Stay Night (either think it is amazing or think it was wildly disappointing), Utawarerumono (the archers, ’nuff said), and, of course, Lucky Star.

Had to cheat this time. The ED is from Project X.

  1. Could we get some table-humping action to make this worth watching the first 22 minutes? Only Lucky Channel has been consistently funny so far.

  2. I’ve got to say, I’m not a huge fan of the pacing in this episode. It needed a couple more pauses between the jokes, I think. It seemed a little…frenetic. This isn’t Pani Poni Dash, it’s more…laid back, and normal. At least, that’s how I’ve always felt.

I’m surprised you didn’t have a picture of ‘Flustered Miyuki Without Her Glasses’. That’s got to be a moe mode.

  3. LOL I loved the conversation between Konata and Miyuki when she was pretending to be a high class lady, couldn’t stop laughing.
I actually kinda enjoyed lucky channel this time, there was less akira being cutesy.
The Kanon ringtone was brilliant, I kinda want that as my ringtone now, Throw some D’s just ain’t gonna cut it after this.

  4. First off – the Lucky Channel bit was utterly fantastic. Akira, slouched in the corner with undershadowed eyes, slapping the table and muttering about “drills” like she’s 5 sheets to the wind, was beautiful.

And yes, Tsukasa searching through her phone was hypnotic. That was me the first week of having my phone – and having put myself into my phone book, so I could remember my number.

  5. Given how they censor every single sort of anime reference in Hayate the Combat Butler, it’s pretty odd seeing the girls say “Keroro Gunso” without even batting an eyelash.

  6. I find it odd that you like Tsukasa… I mean, she is not a meido/lesbian/great melonpan bearer.

The bit about “the guy who comes up with the idea is put in charge” brought me some bad memories. orz.

  7. Jason, can you post the “USO DA!” ringtone?

  8. It’s going to be a wild tie for first between Akira, Tsukasa (go Tsukasa!!!), and Kagami… with Konata a close fourth. :D

Your year-end award should include a Best Canadian in Anime.

  9. If lucky star is so mediocre, why do we watch it? I think it’s a weird balance of mediocre and entertainment made for having what comes after this seem more epic. I’d get burned out if i had muteki kanban musume every season, raises the bar too much.

  10. >>Jason, can you post the “USO DA!” ringtone
I second the request. A .mp3 file will work fine for me. Can you also post the “niku-doki-nipa~” ringtone, if that was ever made?

  11. I want Rena’s maniacal laughter, if I ever get friendly with cell phones and the bills that comes with them.

  12. I guess most of the audience here would not get the Maria-sama ga miteru (marimete for short) references as they have not watched (or read) it. For example, the “drill” haircut in Lucky Channel referred to a Marimete character – not Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann as some might suspect. Maybe this episode wasn’t quite as good as the previous one but for me only turn off was when they started to talk about food again.

  13. Maybe I’m mistaken, but was Tsukasa’s ringtone “Pachelbel’s Canon in D”?

  14. >> Maybe I’m mistaken, but was Tsukasa’s ringtone “Pachelbel’s Canon in D”?

    It is.

  15. Yeeess, bonus points for Tsukasa’s Canon in D ringtone!

For some reason, I’m really enjoying Lucky Star. Sure, it’s definitely not the best KyoAni can do, but for some reason, I feel a good vibe from it. A very good ‘chill’ anime to watch, I guess. No special effects, nothing epic, just… some light-hearted random comedy.

  16. can we consider girl having hard time with electronic devices a new moe mode? xD

  17. >> Can you also post the “niku-doki-nipa~” ringtone, if that was ever made?

That just happens to be Message tone on my phone!

  18. I’m under the deep suspicion that Timotei! is about to become the next ambiguous, yet always applicable and slightly sketchy shouting phrase of AoMM….

  19. Usually, I stop watching anime that I find boring after 5 minutes. There just something about this mediocrity that makes it different. I actually look forward to the next Lucky Star episode.

  20. @ Cyclops:
    Thanks!

Here’s an “I buy Sausage” .mp3 clip, great for turning your cellphone into a sausage buyer:

  21. Hey Jason, it looks like the designs of Higurashi second season had an improvement.

    http://www.oyashirosama.com/web/kai/index.htm

Shion’s melonpan have hit epic level.

  22. Regarding the poll: how about a ‘cutest lucky star girl’ for the next LS-related one? It’ll be interesting to see how the viewpoints change.

I say this mainly because 1) Tsukasa’s not winning and 2) Miyuki’s in last place. Blasphemy, I say!

…still waiting for that Miyuki episode, I guess. It seems she’s been kicked out of the central group so far, such as in the scene where Konata and the twins explore the town.

  23. Heh I don’t know about you guys but Konata’s my favorite out of the girls, that otakuness seems to appeal to my intrests or something. Konota Onee-sama was win for me x.x

  24. I liked this episode, like most of them. Nice and laid back, with spots of humor here and there.

Since it hasn’t been mentioned yet, I’ll put my vote for the bus scene. How would -you- feel if the girl sitting behind you on the bus blurted out “iluvgirlswithglasses!” in a fairly honest tone.

I’d be keeping my backpack on my lap, to say the least.

  25. ohbtw on the topic of yuri I forgot to mention the theme song in the scene where she flips on the TV. It’s the second season Op for Strawberry Panic. That took me back, I was always a sucker for yuri melodrama..

  26. LOL first person to vote Miyuki on the poll.

I am a little disappointed about the whole lack of costume rape for Miyuki. Although I’m more ashamed of Konata for not taking that initiative to do so! Tsk Tsk Tsk, what is the world coming to when a moe obsessed otaku won’t even costume rape a poor loli like Miyuki? Err…

I don’t know why everybody likes Lucky Chanel (although that Canadian line had me rolling off my bed laughing). They killed it like after the second episode. I just skip that and go to the ending now.

  27. USO DA ringtone FTW!

  28. Konata doujinshi doesn’t sound likely.

    LOL FANG-SENSEI doujinshi Yes!

and i have to hear this Uso Da ringtone. Mainly because I don’t get the reference… OTL

  29. another jason: to get the full impact of “USO DA!” you will need to watch Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni…

  30. I saw the whole series of murderous loli’s

    one of my favorite anime’s

But i must have missed USO DA …. any specific episode?

  31. >>can we consider girl having hard time with electronic devices a new moe mode?

I think be definition it should be but we need more examples before it can take it’s rightful place amoung the more established moe modes. At the very least it should be considered an emerging moe mode.

  32. actually, i can’t remember, thought the first time jason uses that meme is in the ep 18 write up:
    http://derailedbydarry.com/arc.....08/08/854/

  33. konata’s so adorable xD

a little weird though, how all these ‘yuri’ anime series kept appearing in this episode xD

  34. [QUOTE]Aya Hirano is secreting preparing for Kiddy Grade 2. I was surprised that grape juice wasn’t involved during the Marimite Konata scenes.{/QUOTE]

In one ep of Lucky Star (can’t remember which, offhand) at the Sports Day, Konata says to Kagami~n ‘Girls should be Elegant’.* So there’s your Kiddy Grade reference for starters (can’t wait for KGII; more Keiji Gotoh goodness! *trousers melt*).

Still searching for a pic of Konata buying sausage.

*- Aya Hirano = Konata. Aya Hirano = Lumiere. Konata quoting Lumiere. Coincidence? To quote Yuuko: ‘There is no such thing as Coincidence in the world. Only Hitsuzen.’
