macross frontier presented by pizza hut

I was reading the blurb for the new Macross Frontier series (which I’m picturing as Heroic Age, complete with robotic sperm), and what gets my eye? “Series Script Editor: Hiroyuki Yoshino (Code Geass, My-HiME)” I’m Snakes-on-a-Plane giddy already.

  1. Yeah too bad it’s going to turn out to be good more than likely, but you’ll find a way to rework that into your usual anti-mecha blogging stance I’m sure.

  2. Time for another round of “Spot the Psycho Lesbian”!

  3. It’s not Jason’s fault that the mecha he’s been forced to watch recently have all been trainwrecks-from-NipponHell.
Goddamn you Shinn. Goddamn you to Heckll!

  4. Jason dun liek me mecha animu baaaaaaaaaaaawww

Erm, I like Macross franchise more than Gundam, so I dun care.

  5. @Kikimaru: It’s not like he’s being forced to watch them by some higher power or something. I also continue to challenge the idea that Code Geass a series which is halfway through it’s run is a trainwreck. The reason there are so many lose ends is that it’s not finished and reaching the point where most 50 episode series have their highest number of open plot threads. Of course things are going to be untidy considering both the nature of the current arc and the whole half-way point thing. Were we closer to the end like Gundam Seed Destiny was when it still had all the loose ends to tie up (and didn’t really bother) I’d agree with his stance, but right now I can’t shake the feeling he’s calling it a trainwreck on purpose just cause it’s more convient from the way he writes his entries and it’s way to early to start judging either Code Geass or Macross Frontier, especially since MF is still in the pre-production stage.

  6. Wait, let me work this logic: I spend the past three months praising Gurren Lagann, and the only series I have blogged more the past three months than GL is Lucky Star. Therefore, I have an anti-mecha blogging stance? By the way, I didn’t declare Code Geass to be a mess until around episode 11/12. That’s pretty much half a series, which I think is more than enough to pass judgement. Up until 9, you can still read me actively praising the series, which will be as comedic as Rashard Lewis for 126 million in a few years.

  7. Except that Code Geass is 50 episodes, not 25, you’ve just now hit the halfway point. As for Gurren Lagann, I agree it’s a great show (That reminds me of Gaogaigar Final in a number of ways, and yes that’s by Sunrise and yes I think it’s not a trainwreck and a great OVA) and I guess it get’s better treatement from you not being a Sunrise series (I can only imagine what you might be saying about it were it one), since you hate everything Sunrise does and are always looking for ways to point out that every show they do is some sort of trainwreck disaster (Even in Gurren-Lagann you seem to like slipping in shots at Sunrise wherever possible for one reason or another). If you don’t have an anti-mecha stance, then you definitely seem to have an Anti-Sunrise one as the Sunrise staff member is the key behind the “Macross Frontier presented by Pizza Hut” post and a whole lot of other blog posts you make. I’ll never understand why you hate the studio so darn much.

  8. Well, I find Sunrise kinda meh as well sometimes. Sometimes. Not always.

  9. Well they have done some crappy stuff, like Daioja and I don’t really care much for the Mai Hime/Otome series even when it was Hime, it was a waste of my time in all honesty, but that’s not enough for me to call them a trainwreck studio. Plus if people want to call them guilty of product placement, all the studios are doing it. To name a couple examples, we’ve got the Vic Viper from Gradius in an episode of J.C Staff’s Sky Girls possibly for the purposes of promoting a new Gradius game, and in Lucky Star they always have Kadokawa Shoten Publishing merchandise on display and being talked about by the girls much like Tony Soprano describes the entire feature set of an SUV in one episode of the Sopranos. Plus Pizza Hut has been doing this for ages, there’s adds for Pizza Hut in Darker Than Black as well and going way back I recall Pizza Hut ads in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 NES game. If there’s blame to be distributed, blame pushy sponsors like Konami, Bandai and Kadokawa, not the studio.

  10. I think someone needs his Rita-liiiiiiiin…

Sum of 5+7 — what is this, Brain Training

(sorry for feeding the troll(s) Jason, but I just can’t help myself!
I’m in despair over the internet!)

  11. I find funny how a whole bunch of the internet population are jumping at KyoAni’s throat as if their product placement was the worst crime done since the Holocaust or the killings done by Jeffrey Dahmer.

I didn’t care for Microsoft’s product placement in “The Island”. I was indifferent over Pizza Hut in Geass (I was more irritated by how a lot of things in Geass “conveniently” happened, like the Geass malfunctioning. But that’s a whole different topic). So why should I give a harsher or bitter treatment over what KyoAni does in term of marketing or advertising?

  12. @Sheba: I would say give them the same treatment, as truly every studio is guilty. I honestly haven’t seen this throat jumping you mention, a link would be appreciated so I can see what you mean. As far as I can tell the majority of fans out there still believe that Kyoani is the best studio to ever exist above all others, who has yet to make a single fault in producing an anime, only that that majority has lessened somewhat with Lucky Star.
@Kikimaru: I’m a troll cause I disagree with Jason on some matters? I think you have a funny definition of what constitutes a troll…..

Is 4chan’s /a/ enough for you?

There were a time when Gainax was hailed by a part of their fans as a godlike studio for they never did things like the others and did it good (well in the eyes of their fans).
When I see them doing things like pulling a Gainax ending for the sake of a Gainax ending (Mahoro) or making things like “He is my master”, I think I have the right to question them.
I guess different times, different etc….

  14. @Sheba: Hmmmm….good points. Though I don’t really take 4chan a/seriously at all and can’t really call them part of the regular anime fandom, they do exist, though I doubt they are beating on Lucky Star for valid reasons so much as for attention grabbing. As for Gainax…..yeah Evangelion alone was like the Haruhi of the 90’s. Wasn’t it mostly Hideaki Anno though that was the one worshipped as the god director and Gainax was just sort of mentioned on the side. Maybe your right and maybe we all have the right to question the actions of all studios, but couldn’t people at least wait for some definitive info on Macross Frontier before jumping to conclusions based on the associate producers and 4 or so screencaps.

Code Geass is 25 episodes. They may do a sequel, but you can’t say, “Well, Pokemon is 500 episodes so you have to watch 250 to get an idea for it.” No. I think 12 episodes of a 25 episode long series is waaaaaay enough. Plus, if you have been reading AoMM, you should know that I don’t hate Sunrise. It’s one of the funnier subplots of this blog. There’s a post where someone calls me on my bluff about my supposed hatred for it too. (BTW, saying something is subpar is quality doesn’t mean I hate it. I think In-and-Out is subpar to Outback, but does it mean I eat at Outback more than In-and-Out? There are always other factors at play.)

  16. in terms of actual clock time, kyoani references in lucky star comes in at less than 5%, with the other 95% pertaining to things lucky star exclusive. thing is, that small minority is the easiest to pick out, easiest to screencap, and therefore easiest to mistake as “all there is to lucky star.” a damn shame, really.
likewise, for the pizza hutting in geass, it was a source of laughs while never taking away from the actual story. rather, it fits right in with the rest of the silliness of the show.
anyways, i think getta and jason are talking about two different aspects of geass – getta’s trying to impress upon us the intricate nature of geass’s plot and the fact that because we’re only halfway through (yes, there will be a sequel), there’s no way for everything to be falling into place; on the other hand, jason is talking about something much more general than that. the “train wreck studio” is basically referring to sunrise’s penchant for having its flagship shows take odd turns for no reason other than for the sake of having a twist. what you end up with is a show thats paraded as an epic drama but ultimately becomes a hodgepodge of random ideas that kind of but not really fit together. most people dont really care because it’s entertaining, but someone like jason isnt gonna let stuff like that slip. kinda like how he’s going to keep using the rashard example for the next 4 years, when the magic finally realize their mistake and do a sign and trade for JR smith’s 150 mil contract.

  17. Thanks for the info :)
New series to watch when it comes out then. Wonderful.

Hopefully with some nicely designed mecha. And the ordinary triangle…

As for one who is not much into mecha or even thought to have outgrown it, I always loved the macross mechas, maybe it have something to do with their abilities to transform into jet fighters.
This love comes from a time when, as a kid who grew with the fear of the Soviets then saw the end of the Cold War, I was a total jet fighter nerd (as in, I could recognize most of the Warsaw Pact or NATO military planes).

The only possible sign-and-trade in 2011 with Rashard is Rashard going to the SF Giants for Barry Zito. I’m rooting for that one to happen. It would be glorious.
