… or otherwise known as Generic Harem Action Comedy #185,481.

I stumbled across the first volume of Omamori Himari (apparently there’s only two out now), and it’s reads like just another Generic Harem Action Comedy. The ingredients are all there. The typical male loser with some eccentric behavior just hitting some life event? Check! Yuuto is a typical loser male character who just hit 16, and he’s allergic to cats. Much better than the dude from Quality Crescent Love who touched noses as if there were still blow on them. The typical too-cute-for-a-childhood-friend who wakes up the typical loser male everyday? Check! Rinko is fills in the too-cute-for-a-childhood-friend who wakes up the typical loser male everyday very well. Next up would have to be the fanservice-ladden-moe-mode mysterious girl who disturbs their lives? Check! Let’s welcome Himari as the sword-wielding fanservice-ladden-moe-mode mysterious girl who will disrupt Yuuto’s and Rinko’s otherwise peaceful life.

And, there you have it, the setting for Omamori Himari, or Generic Harem Action Comedy #185,481. The thing is, it makes for a quick and enjoyable read. This manga doesn’t break new ground or try to improve on the formula but takes the formula and tries to do it well. Fanservice? It has it in spades. Growing harem? Spades. Comedy? Spades. It’s unapologetic in what it is and feels to actually embrace it. There’s even a cheesy montage where Rinko gets jealous of Himari’s Mikuru-class melonpan and challenges her to a sports duel… after seeing somewhat of the same concept in Hayate, Hanauyko, Gurren Lagann, etc, you probably can figure out that scene and story before even reading a page. But even though I’ve seen this before, I still chuckled and found enough moe to keep me interested.

For the typical AoMM reader, Generic Harem Action Comedy #185,481 is worthwhile just for Himari. Did I mention Mikuru-class? Well, she’s also a cat spirit, so, yes, nekomimi. Halfway through reading the first volume, I was thinking, “Mmm… if she puts on a meido outfit, I have to write a post about this manga.” Rinko is also the jealous type while Himari is the promiscuous type, so I’m hoping for some tension, but we’ll see. The big downside to this series is that the “action” portion feels really tacked on, and the Yuuto isn’t a very likable male lead. At one point, Himari asks him “to try something unreasonable” in a very, uh, unladylike pose, and Yuuto walks away.

With enough well-done comedic and fanservice elements, I’m willing to overlook its genericness of this manga. I don’t think you need to be innovative or groundbreaking to come up with a good series, just do what needs to be done and do it well, kinda like Blizzard’s formulas for making video games. “Why? An MMORPG set with a fantasy setting?!? Bah! There’s been billions of those already…” (Though I want to see Blizzard try to make a WWII FPS. That will test the limits of their abilities.) I’m looking forward to Generic Harem Action Comedy #185,481, or otherwise known as Omamori Himari.

(And, yes, I’m hoping for an anime adaptation. Translations available through Manga-Heaven.)

  1. Speaking of generic harem action, XLG started a new series too… basically generic harem comedy with robot maids, with the twist being that the main character can control one of the girls to fight through a…uhh…. remote control connected to her crotch.

Which means… she did? ;) In other news, I’m grabbing this from place-where-you-lurk-moar as we speak.

Shhh…we do not say its name, even under guise, lest those we-really-do-not-speak-of come after us. By which I mean Fox 11 News…oooops…

  4. Trash with fanservice galore?

    Where’s volume 2?

  5. I’m a constant visitor of AoMM.

And I Don’t Do Generic Harem Action Comedies.

Now, I wonder what Claire’s little brother will do in Claymore…

  6. Thank you for the link Jason – I do love these fanservicey mangas

  7. Oh my god, Jason… those I dare say outclass Mikuru. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to burn the images of Himari into my brain before I pass out, that Ikea in Emeryville should never be ventured into, upon pain of death.

  8. Motoko-esque female lead with ginormous melonpan? I’ll take that over Suzu-Naru-Ayu-Asuna-Tenmaku-Eruruu-Shana-Louise-generic mandatory female companion #9,210,050 any day of the week.

Now they just need to ditch the stereotypical loser male lead and take after Kamina’s example….

  9. Mikuru-class melonpan + Sword girl + Mysterious girl?

    I AM SOLD!

That has to be the lamest “eccentric behaviour” ever. I mean, I had that too when I was a kid. And I’m still allergic to fish. Does that mean I’m qualified to be a loser harem lead?

Only in fantasy Japan, where the girls are stacked & outnumber guys by something like 8-to-1.

Quick, I need their consulate address and a visa application stat!

  13. Im confused on how to dl it, im getting no where on the site

  14. Why Spam protection always gives me something that ends as “eleven”?

Yes, I read this … like the artwork (especially the fact each character is different from the others) and its enjoyable (not new grounds but it did not tired me or bored me) and Yuuto is not developed much yet since its first volume (and its just 6 chapters) and they are still doing the character introduction (the water loli just joined) so that is expected, still the beach chapter does shown he have the markings of the typical Shounen hero.

Also I found it funny …

    “I didn’t see anything!”
    “I didn’t see anything!”
“They had a good look at everything.”

    He he …

And I guess is because she wear a maid outfit at the last page you are posting this Jason …

  15. Okay…now i’m hooked on this series.

  16. Koge-Donbo’s recent comic Kon Kon Kokon has pretty much the same premise. Except the cat is replaced with a fox, all the characters’ ages are cut in half, all traces of melonpan are erased, the fanservice is greatly reduced, and the DFC water demon is, well, different. In short, it’s an inferior product. Both Kokon and Himari use a very standard formula, but Himari is executed a lot better, comparing the first volumes at least.

Mostly agreed, except that not even that much melonpan can match up to the uber-kawaiiness that results when you touch Eruruu’s tail.

Also, as great as Himari is… there’s an even better melonpan ladden catgirl swordgirl out there. I’m not about to link directly to a nude pic here, but look up the game Tail_Tale on sagubooru and look for the one of the bathing catgirl. I have yet to see anything that can even come close. Too bad English speakers like myself will probably never be able to play the game.

  18. So he’s making regular mangas now…*a little disappointed*
Well, at least it’s an ecchi manga and it doesn’t look bad. Matran Milan is known as an ero-manga artist. I love his artwork, the characters always look kawaii and sexy. i hope he hasn’t completely given up on making ero-mangas and will make some great ones in the future again.

Heh, that could mean hot Himari on Yuta sex scene, with Yuta getting real itchy everywhere afterwards. Of course, the boy may show redemption if he can demonstrate l33t S4MUR41 SK1LLZ when Himari goes out of commission and not be a wuss like Rito…
