As the subs and most of the spoilers are actually out, I’m lifting the spoiler embargo on Gurren Lagann 25.
I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a series this much. Haruhi? More so because you can’t help but root for Simon and his Gurren Brigade. It does help that he’s fighting a bunch of nameless, arrogant asswipes, what whatever. What this episode showed wasn’t just Simon’s awesomeness (or the neogolism “GAR!”), it is that whatever Kamina started has spread. This fever is most evident in Simon, but, I mean, if you told me Kittan and Boota would have huge roles to play at the end, I would have dismissed it. Great series. One to go. Gonna miss it.
I Accept Your Dying Wish
He hasn’t done much, and I even started calling him a pervert hampster… but… seriously, Simon’s spiral energy definitely rubbed off on Boota. Awesome. I bet he can kick Pikachu’s ass as well.
Aside from creating more toys and figures that can be spawned off of this series (yes, I’m looking to buy a HQ Gurren Lagann mecha set), I gotta hand it to Kittan who went from annoying brother of the three hawt chix0rs to actually bringing something to the table. Though in storytelling, as with poker, one plays cards until they’re all down. With most of the Gurren Lagann brigade gone, only Kittan and Yoko were of any position to make the sacrifice, and I’m glad it’s not Yoko (as speculated on many boards and forums previously when the episode name was first revealed). You can argue about the quality or GAR of Kittan’s death, but it’s hard to judge in the context of Gurren Lagann since there are so many burning, winning moments.
I’m not sold just because he knew it was his duty, and he knew if he didn’t do it, Yoko would have. Kamina, on the other hand, was beaten to a pulp and still managed to pull a win out of his ass when he should have been dead five minutes later. And for all the Simon moments, well, each more propelled the show from one tier to the next, much like a spiral going outward. In any case, they were all fitting moments, and I’m glad that Boota for all things joined the act. Now if Viral, Yoko, Darry, and Gimmy would start bringing more to the table.
Speaking of Yoko… is it too early to start calling her Black Widow Yoko now? Every guy who becomes close to her either dies or gets stolen away by a loli in a fridge. This is getting ridiculous.
(When I said “good riddance” earlier, I meant “good riddance to any competiton for Yoko even if kissing her is more fatal than that chix0r from Ninja Scroll.”)
(I did like BSS-Anon’s translation for “You get experience through shooting blanks” just for the possible sexual connotation.)
With Simon’s “Why not just whore destroy the anti-spiral machine?” strategy, he official is Gainax’s long overdue apology for inflicting Shinji Ikari on us. I accept. And is it sad that almost every anime fan I know is more excited about the final to Gurren Lagann than the Eva remakes? Right now, if I had time to toss out a momentum post (instead of reading trashy manga like Omamori Himari), Gurren Lagann would have all the momentum. No other ending going on right now can match it, and it’s been a while since I’ve anticipated an ending quite like this.
(Haruhi‘s ending was predetermined since we could read the light novels. This? I have no frickin’ clue since this series is one of those rare, “Let’s just make an anime for the sake of making an anime” gambits instead of relying on source material. Gotta hand it to Gainax. But I guess at some point 26 will turn into a mindfuck.)
The BGM for the last sequence was an odd voice. Opera singing intermingled with the classic “RA RA FIGHT THE POWA!”
Chouginga Gurren Lagann?!? Hell yes.
Well… goddamn.
Despite seeing it coming a miles away, I got to admit that I was quite impressed with Kittan last moment (a lot more than I thought I would). The man does indeed go out in a blaze of glory.

More Darry FTW!
Every guy who becomes close to her either dies or gets stolen away by a loli in a fridge.
Not a bad deal if you ask me.
Hm… I wonder, who will Yoko ended up with in the end?
The surprise in this episode, for me, was Simon glass transformation. I really, really didn’t see that coming :P (oh, and Boota super-spiral power up too).
Chouginga Gurren Lagann?!? Hell yes.
Hell yes indeed! I expected nothing less of major
Darryassshotskicking in the next episode. I think after all these build ups, we deserve at least that much.Maybe this is the real reason that The Second Season of Haruhi Suzumiya didn’t arrive this year: Kyoto Animation knew that even their goddess would look bad next to Gurren Lagann.
This post is more what I was expecting regarding 25. Good stuff.
Good things about this ep? Many.
Bad thing about this ep? No Nia.
Episode 26 had better be the Nia ep I’m waiting for.
Am I missing something here? Aren’t there 27 episodes, not 26?
There are 27 episodes.
Yeah, there’s two episodes left. For one, there’s still one mecha partly seen in the opening we’ve yet to see (Where the images echo behind Gurren Lagann, we see a blue mech, a yellow mech, and a red mech, which are Arc Gurren Lagann, Chouginga Gurren Lagann, and an as of yet unrevealed mecha,) with no indication of needing it just yet. Suffice to say, we’ve got a good two episodes of counterattack ahead.
I think the writers jus kill off who ever got to smooch Yoko ‘cos they be jealous.
Well gee. I’m left speechless. If the ending is even better, I might just end up mute for life.
Although, I’m also left frightened at the thought of Boota and Simon yaoi doujins involving sketchy “spiral energy” popping up now. Eh, I guess that’s what you get for sticking a minor character into one of the most important key points in an anime.
I have to give this series mad props for introducing us to the mech that is so large it has to be piloted by another mech. And then introducing a still larger mech which is itself piloted by the mech piloted by another mech which is finally piloted by our hero. The only way to top it would be to add a 4th layer of recursive mechs, but that would just be silly.
There is something i didn’t undertsand yet:
what’s the meaning of GAR?!?!
GAR is the manly equivalent of moe (that is, where a male character exemplifies everything that is manly, then pushes it up a notch), which oddly enough started as a typo on 4ch. A poster was supposed to say ‘gay’ (for Archer of F/SN), but it ended up as ‘Gar’.
I finally figured out what it was that always made me feel like Kittan was an extraneous character in this series – he is basically Kamina-light. He has a similar personality, he takes over the role of supporting Simon after Kamina dies, and even falls for the same girl, only every time it’s like he is second best. I think the only real difference between Kamina and Kittan was that try as I might I can’t imagine Kamina going out on a suicidal mission, he’d always go in thinking he’d make it out somehow, while Kittan time and time again put himself in a situation where he expected to die (facing off against anti-spirals with a gun!?) and eventually he did. Though got to hand it to him: that was one heck of a way to go!
I was left speechless yet again. Luckily, it just keeps getting harder to believe that Gainax can fuck up the ending.
On a sidenote: I really like the BGM that started playing when Kittan left.
Also, lol’d at BSS-Anon jokesubs. I AM ELTON JOHN!
Spam_vt: Mecha piloting mecha isn’t a new concept. There was a old mecha anime back in the 80s that had a mecha that three layers. Can’t remeber its name but it was (surprise) base in a mountain.
Xellos , macron 1 , grendizer , getter robo ? ;p which one ?!
Doombitch strikes again! Quite sad to see Kittan go, but went out in a firework of GAR and EXTRAVAGANCE. Hell yeah!
And the combination of the choir and rap at the end worked quite weirdly… o_O
It is not Macron or Getter robo.
It might have been Grendizer but i don’t think so.
It was basically the human piloting a small robot (more lke robotic suit)
then piloting a medium size robot
and form there piloting a bigger robot.
All three robots could combine and fight as one or seperate out and fight as three different robots.
If everyone here thinks that the moon-sized Super-Galactic Gurren Lagann is over the top, there’s still ONE MORE transformation in store for Gurren Lagann. If you pause the OP just at the part where Gurren merges with Lagann, notice the silhouettes behind the combined Gurren Lagann — behind the shadow that represents the Cho-Ginga Gurren, there’s another silhouette (with obvious skull-shaped kneepads)!
II’m betting that the Gurren-dan will find one more planet-sized battleship to combine into before the last episode rolls in.
I prefer “Transcendent Super Spiral Dreadnought Ganmen” to “hyper galaxy Gurren-Lagann.” But then I realized that one is a title while the other is a proper name. So it could be called “The Transcendent Super Spiral Dreadnought Ganmen, Hyper Galaxy Gurren-Lagann.” YAY
Oh.
My.
God.
That was so Goddamn cool I’m actually *shaking* right now. ….that’s probably not a good sign for my mental and/or physical health, but God DAMN.
Great episode, though that isn’t really new with Gurren-Lagann. ;)
I’m scared the ending is going to fail extremely hard though.
Think about it, we only have 2 episodes left and we know from the preview that next week we’re gonna get some anti-spiral illusion thingie on Simon or something like that and that they’re gonna fight the 2 half-a-solar-system-wide rockheads, the outher shell will go off and we’ll be left with battling those spider-like bastards from the preview as the Chouginga Gurren-Lagann at the end of the ep.
Which would leave only 1(!!!!!) more episode to get the new spaceship, get Simon his final Garlock outfit, get Boota to transform, learn how to use the damn thing(the blabla Cannon and stuff from ep 1), get the entire anti-spiral space fleet on his ass, defeat them, save Nia, go back to earth, tell them what happened and stuff and for Nia and Simon to get married at the end I guess.
THAT”S JUST IMPOSSIBLE! Not even Kamina’s + Kittan’s + Simon’s manly spirit can do that. ;)
I’m still hoping for GAINAX to come out this week saying they can’t fit everything into 2 more eps, and make a few more to conclude the series in a fantastic way as well(with 30 eps total or so). :D
I’m really starting to think that it wasn’t actually a view of what WILL happen, at the beginning of the first episode…but what *did* happen, once…or perhaps it’s the Macross/Do You Remember Love deal, where one is a kind of ‘movie version/historical recreation’.
My theory about that last mech…this Final Gurren Lagann (Genesic Gurren Lagann?) will be made from the bits of the ‘body part’ mechs…or perhaps from the planets that are lying around space. Or maybe just the bits and pieces left over from the countless other Spiral Beings that were filling the ‘ocean’. There sure did seem to be a lot of them. More than enough, probably, to construct an even *larger* mech. Planet-sized, instead of moon-sized.
Gainax has never been shy of ‘bigger is better’, after all. One look at Diebuster should tell you *that*.
That said…my imagination has gone into overdrive now, and the only way they could possibly surpass my expectations is if EVA-01, Gunbuster, Nono, and Atomsk (Or at least wuzzername, with the Vespa) showed up to lend a hand.
(And I really, really wish this thing would let me put line breaks between stuff.)
Oh, and Xellos, the anime you’re thinking of is Machine Robo, though there was another, similar concept earlier, as well.
>> Speaking of Yoko… is it too early to start calling her Black Widow Yoko now? Every guy who becomes close to her either dies or gets stolen away by a loli in a fridge. This is getting ridiculous.
Nah, Carter from SG-1 still has her beat in the sheer amount of dead paramours. And to give Yoko credit, Kittan pretty much figured he was going to die, which is more than can be said for… gee, all the other guys I can think of related to Black Widow Women ™.
@Sixten: I’m no expert, but I think you just broke one of the conventions of post 2006 anime. No criticism of Haruhi or Kyoto Animation is allowed. I am amazed you weren’t flamed bro. Anyway, manly heroes come and go, it happened to Gai Shishioh, it happend to Musashi from Getter Robo, it happened to Kamina, and now Kittan, but as Gai’s last words in Gaogaigar to Mamoru went “As long as courage remains, our brave heroes will prevail”. Something along those lines. Simon lives on.

Such rot … such “conventions” do not exist, at least outside the minds of KyoAni fanboys.
I said it once and will say it again, Kyoto Animation have yet to come up with a original series (that is not based on someone else work) before they can prove themselves as a studio.

Well as a Haruhi fanatic of 2006, I’ll say one thing:”Life goes on”.
So yeah, Haruhi is so yesterday. I’m moving on to the new Anime of the Year 2007. Don’t get me wrong, Haruhi was and is awesome. But well, I like Nia now.
Animes that really blows that year created a lot of fanbase…..
2006
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Death Note
2007
Gurren Lagann
Lucky Star
Hmm is there any more contenders for this year…….that last forever in the hearts of otaku’s and some viewers.
2 more episodes left. I cheerup up till the end and hope only Viral, Boota and Dayakka will die.. every else lives.. Gurren Lagann Fever….
Is it just me, or did Gainax just create an epic space battle that symbolizes the stages of human reproduction?

Gai Shishioh, and for that matter, the rest of GGG, did not die. Genesic GaoGaiGar has one extra move listed in its stats called Galeoria Road. Plus, in the sneak preview of GaoGaiGo there’s one shot of what looks like Genesic GaoGaiGar bursting out of a sun. No telling if GaoGaiGo will ever actually get made, though.
