A new challenger appears!
(I was getting worried that we wouldn’t see any melonpan this episode… whew! Andohbytheway, the only reason Yuji can check out Konoe here is because Shana is too distracted by her melonpan.)
I’m not sure what is for fitting for Hecate– err– Konoe’s entrance into Yuji’s, Shana’s, and Yoshida’s happy school life… the WWE-styled entrance where there’s loud strip club music, bright pyrotechnics, and a challenger making a debut while giving everyone a middle finger? Or something more subtle like Super Smash Brothers where you just get the “A new challenger appears!” graphic? I’d be happy with either one of those for Konoe, since she’s going to instigate some serious issues for Yuji and friends and, more importantly, connect the school romance/slice-of-life aspect of Shakugan no Shana directly with the Flame Haze/Tomagura-hunting aspect. About time too!
For pretty much the whole series, it was hard to tell which way the series would go. They seemed to balance out every tsundere moment from Shana or haremish moment with Yoshida with a random Tomagura attack, or break up the Tomagura attack with some melonpan levity. Previously, the Shana-Yuji-Yoshida dynamic had a second order effect on the Tomagura-hunting action, but, now, I’m happy to see that Bel Masque is using the Shana-Yuji-Yoshida dynamic against them. Another haremete, and to make it worse for Shana and Yoshida, Hecate has already scored with Yuji. While everyone is distracted by Konoe, who’s going to pay attention to Bel Masque’s real intentions?
(The Gurren Lagann equivalent is if before Simon got to Lord Genome but after he regains his GAR, they sent a hawt female version of Kamina to throw him off guard and seduce him. With Nia in her least attractive state and Yoko already insecure due to Nia, that’s a much better strategy than sending out Viral again.)
Melonpanriffic
I think the creation of women’s volleyball is enough proof that Kryios is, indeed, a man, or a possibly bisexual costume raping bunny girl.
Maybe I’ve been watching too much Umisho and Ninomiya-kun, but I was half-expecting Yoshida to start fondling Konoe as her methodology to determine if she is or isn’t Hecate.
Isn’t the methodology used thus far completely and utterly wrong for the Flame Hazes to determine if Konoe is Hecate? They have to make one crucial assumption: that Bel Masque isn’t dumb enough to send in the real Hecate. They should approach the issue as if they will not find any trace of Hecate in Konoe rather, since Bel Masque is not dumb enough to leave any. They have to think, “Mmmm, what would Bel Masque gain by introducing a human Hecate?” And then progress from there.
Shana’s “test” at the end also has a major flaw: what if everything was setup and predetermined by Bel Masque already? The logical and safe choice for any Flame Haze is to let the Tomagura eat Konoe. It’s a gamble– one human life for possibly millions– and if Shana did guess right, not only would she have stopped Bel Masque’s plot, she would also have rid the world of a major Tomagura. And then we can spend the remaining 23 episodes or so on hot springs or Shana-tan footage. I think that’s an all around win.
What objects could Yuji pick up be funnier than a simple table cover?
1. Lacy garter belt.
2. The book, “Tricking Dumb Flame Hazes for Dummies”
3. A choco cornet.
4. The Core Drill.
5. Syndonay’s underwear.
Does Margery ever wash her clothes? They must, uh, reek of booze and whatnot by now…
As awesome as the DFC All-Stars forming around Yuji, I’m more concerned with the lack of Chigusa and Wilhelminia screen time. I can’t be the only one.
I was expecting Yuji to stretch out the cloth and reveal Konoe’s spare pantsu.
^I knew I wasn’t the only one.

As was mentioned both the novels and the previous season of the show, a King of Guze can “purify” their Flame Haze. In the anime, I believe this was referenced once in regard to Marchocias curing Margery’s hangover, and once when Shana mentioned she wasn’t accustomed to bathing like humans.

It would be hands down the best thing the anime has ever done for the series. ^o^
I have to admit, Im finding Konoe to be a cute girl. And im very curious how she is related to Hecate. Ive been dissapointed with Shana II so far, and while this episode hasnt been much better, its starting to show signs and set the stage.
ytf be disappointed w/ shana ii? its rapin
Geh, I totally fell for it. When Konoe appeared, I just started having thoughts of what Hecate would become if she had a chance to live as a human. And then I moved on to the question of whether or not she was really Hecate. Just like Shana and Yuji, I didn’t think beyond that to what Ball Masque’s plan was behind all of it. It wasn’t until Jason pointed out that Ball Masque would stand to gain nothing by putting the real Supreme Throne in a position where she could get killed, or worse, turned to the light side, that I realized that the Flame Hazes were thinking about the situation in the wrong way. OTL. I need to work on my critical thinking. But because Ball Masque managed to out-think me, I found it very believable for Shana and Yuji to fall right into the same trap.
.
I still have Shugo Chara! picked out as the best show of the season, but Shana II is just rocking the house more than I had hoped. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Given that during the promo for the movie that Wilheimina promised more action, I’ll have to assume she’s in there SOMEWHERE to make up for her lack of movie screen time. Whether this involves more kitchen hijinks or not is another story (although having Wilhemina being bossed around/cowed by Chigusa would be worth a few episodes by itself).
Maybe Hecate was modelled on Konoe, and Hecate is the clone? Or else they just wanted someone else that Yoshida and Shana could agree upon to ‘eliminate from the competition’…

True, but I think Margery may need to do it the old fashioned way anyway. Considering all the alcohol that must be in her system and clothing, if Marchosias were to try to use his “purifying flame”, she’d go up like a roman candle and take half the city with her. Plus we wouldn’t get a bath scene. ^_^
I think the only reason Margery bathes normally is to enjoy the sake served in hot baths/hot springs…
What this series needs is a special “bath house” DVD release, like the one for Code Geass. You know, something like all of them in a big steamy bathhouse….. Chigusa trying to get Wilhemina to relax and enjoy herself, while Marjorie, sans glasses, is trying to get both of them drunk enough for a yuri scene. Meanwhile, across the pool, Yoshida’s melon-riffic figure is ticking off Shana, who is so busy making with the eye beams of doom, neither of them notices Konoe spiriting Yuuiji off for some co-ed bathing.
Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Geh geh geh. It is still slightly possible for that to be the real Hecate of some sort, but i am seriously beginning to doubt it. The thing that makes me not 100% sure is that the belle masque person with 3 eyes (whatever her name is) was talking about plotting some stuffs, with the recent developments, its reasonable to assume that she has SOMETHING to do with Hecate. Relative? Twin? Clone? Sydonay? Hallucination? Hecate? But her behavior is extremely odd as well, but not hecate-ish, but it sorta is. hmmmmmm. maybe i am over thinking this. Man, if my english professor saw this post he would have an heart attack.

My hormon driven pervert side is voting #1. My geek side is voting #2, #3 and #4. My closet homo side is voting #5.
I’ll listen my hormon driven pervert side, it never failed me.
Well, I didn’t think that Konoe could be the real Hecate because Shana would attempt to eliminate her – as we saw – no matter how much Plot Armor she might have. But I don’t think she’s fully human either; perhaps a natural or vat-grown or created with magic, and modified for whatever plan Bel Masque (Bal Masque?) has cooked up this time… then again, any amounts of logic and precedence can be thrown out of the window with some magic, and make that the real Hecate (“we used this tomogara’s power to make her appear human” to “this magic trinket makes her look human even to flame hazes” to “this spell on her would have protected her against that fool of a bait who tried to eat her”).
“What objects could Yuji pick up be funnier than a simple table cover?”
6. A talking sword
7. Hecate’s hat
8. State Alchemist’s pocket watch
9. A spell focus that transports him to another world to serve as… no, let’s not go there
10. A rosary
It’s “Bal Masqué” !!! = “masked ball” (say my dictionnary)
There is a hint.
Sydonay says to Bel Peol to not do anything strange to Hecate and mentions a “blue insignia”.
My take its is Hecate but that body is likely a fake one, something like a torch and if destroyed she simply “awakens” back in her own body.

.
I actually like that theory. If it’s a disposable clone, Hecate’s life is in no danger, but if it’s her mind seeing through the eyes of that clone, she can still learn to live as a human. And it would justify Sydonay’s concern that Hecate might not remain pure – her mind might be corrupted by the emotions and values of the human world. And it also keeps the door open for the “turning to the light side” that I like in these kinds of stories. Who knows what would happen if Hecate falls in love with Yuji for real?

Win.
Is it just me or is Hecate the only member of Bal Masque Shana hasn’t fought directly? Sure, her pseudo-sex machine got smashed, but did they ever go head to head? Considering she shares Shana’s characteristic monstrous capacity for power of existance, it would be interesting if they ever went head to head.
On the matter of disposable clones, is it possible that Hecate will later contract with her own clone and use it as a “Flame Haze”? That way she can maintain her proxy but fight at the most opportune moment…
Shana barely contained Alastor.
Hecate power was not capacity, she simply was able to synchronize with Yuuji and since she is empty the Majo Maken (or whatever the damn thing is called) keep on dropping power of existence since it could not tell the difference of Yuuji and Hecate (side effect of that is Yuuji now have a lot more power of existence).
Hecate powers in actual battle are unknown, I doubt she is on the same level as Bel Peol or Sydonay.
Well Hecate and Yuuji already synchronized before… (for those guys that watch season 1), so definitely Hecate have developed feelings for him since he said something that makes Hecate believe.
OK, I lol’d. You got me there. :P
Ever since the next ep preview in episode 2, whenever Konoe appeared on screen I would hear Haruhi’s “A mysterious transfer student!” line playing in the back of my head.
Literally just got into Shakugan no Shana II a few weeks ago. Almost done with the series, but it’s leaving me crazed for finding info online. Anyways, great review/commentary on the show. :) Also, if any fans are still coming onto this page looking for more Shakugan, Animax Asia is starting to stream their Shakugan no Shana II episodes online. Good news for fans!!!
