wait, no “make marina useful” storyline?

If only Sunrise put as much effort in their scriptwriting as they do their press interviews for Newtype.

(Even the fan art have plot holes. How did Setsuna change from one panel to another? Look at the collar. He’s a Gundam pilot slash ninja or a voodoo doll?)

Four years have passed since Gundam 00, and the world has broken down again into two factions: the Federation and Anti-Federation. They are in struggle, and, once again, Celestial Being mobilizes to stop war.

00 Gundam: Successor to Exia, has two GN drives instead of one. Piloted by Setsuna F. Seiei, not to be confused with Setsuna G. Seiei.

Keldim Gundam: Sniping type Gundam with a Haro for pilot assist. Piloted by Lockon Stratos. Who looks a lot like the original Lockon (Lyle?) but isn’t the original Lockon (Neil). Either way, re-using call signs is probably a bad idea. Oh well, at least their new uniforms don’t look as flaming. Oh wait, they do.

Arios Gundam: Piloted by Allelujah. No other info.

Selavii Gundam: Virtue clone. Piloted by Tieria, who redeveloped Celestial Being.

I honestly can’t tell Sunrise anime apart from each other anymore. How did HRL, AEU, and Union suddenly become Federation and Anti-Federation? It’s like Union of Nations vs. Britannia. Question: will Gundam 00 season 2 be more or less ridiculous than Code Geass R2? Remember, the bar is set high, but if anyone can go higher, it’s Sunrise.

  1. Little does Jason know that Sunrise is setting up for a crossover series in 2009.

  2. can’t wait for that season 2 to roll around later this year.. ;3

  3. I think Marina is pounding on a Setsuna doll in the third panel.

  4. Sunrise should take a break from these global conflicts and destructive war machines and do a heartwarming, lighthearted slice of life comedy featuring 10-12 year old moeblob girls and boys doing very cute things.

  5. Jason: Actually the comic makes perfect sense, since Marina ‘sensed’ (note the Newtype flash) that Setsuna was kissing someone else (third panel happens somewhere else, obviously), hence she’s cursing him with a voodoo doll.

Yeah, veteran Gundam manga reader. This isn’t even half as ridiculous as some of the frame placement in, oh, Gundam vs. Ideon (non-canon).

  6. Look at Tieria’s hands in that scan, I’m sure he is thinking “This season, no more gay jokes! I’m gonna slap somebody with my pimp hand!”

Also I’m sure I’ve seen that uniform somewhere else. I just can’t quite put my finger on it!

  7. Time to send your resume into Sunrise I think…

  8. For all our bitching about sunrise they do make damn entertaining shows and in the end isn’t that what matters most?

  9. healing type? this an insult in moonspeak?
tbh I never really liked gundam, doesn’t really bother me when Sunrise takes a dump on the franchise.

  10. As long as Lockon Stratos isn’t Neil, I’m fien with this new series.

  11. >> healing type? this an insult in moonspeak?

Obviously, it’s referencing none other than the original New Healing Type Magical Girl, Behoimi-chan! What, you want actual magical girl powers?

Meanwhile, being highly amused by these Sunrise news items about upcoming animes, I pose myself a query: Should I start watching Gundam 00 in anticipation of the upcoming sequel, or should I just jump in fresh and green, and allow the absurdity that is Gundam to pile up like delicious layers of a decadent yet devilish guilty indulgence?

Sunrise, where the phrase “Going for broke” takes on new meaning.

  12. … yup. They had to outdo Gundam SEED Destiny with ze weirdness, and here we go.

  13. the bar will go higher. its Sunrise. YES WE CAN!

  14. >>>For all our bitching about sunrise they do make damn entertaining shows and in the end isn’t that what matters most?

Here’s the thing, though: Most of the $unrise otaku-tachi are straight “sheeple.” If the company rapes them in the rear end, they’ll gladly accept it.

Another is that these circus clowns can get away with what they’re doing over in Japan because they make tons more money on merchandise than they do on anime.

$unrise / Bancolding$ being “rewarded” for the deeds they think are good? “Lambchops” are pretty delicious, last I heard.

  15. The real plot hole in the comic is that a Middle Eastern princess is eating with a bowl and chop sticks.

  16. It’s the Newtype flash.

She detected a disturbance in the Force, could not prevent it, and then beat up on a doll.

  17. I said this many times, Sunrise always end up copypaste the Gundam plot when it comes to mech.

  18. What happened to Tieria’s “better haircut” (as in the last episode preview)?

  19. >>“wait, no “make marina useful” storyline?”

Is this really all that shocking?

  20. I think that’s supposed to be the Throne-pilot (Mikey’s Sis-con or whatever her name really is) in Panel 3, not Tieria.

  21. >> Time to send your resume into Sunrise I think…

    I try, I try.

    >> Sunrise should take a break from these global conflicts and destructive war machines and do a heartwarming, lighthearted slice of life comedy featuring 10-12 year old moeblob girls and boys doing very cute things.

I’ve always wanted to do a Code Geass or Gundam parody with the Heart’s Content cast. I’m just not sure if my body can take all the LSD and poisonous toads required to pull it off.

    >> For all our bitching about sunrise they do make damn entertaining shows and in the end isn’t that what matters most?

Yep, except we’re not really bitching. We’re fanboys being fanboys. Oh the joys of fandom!

  22. The only type of show that Sunrise won’t mess up is non-mecha. Look at Gintama and Keroro, their plot is very good. So please, Sunrise, leave those machinery and gadgets alone.

  23. I don’t know, ever since the last episode of Gundam 00, where they announced the development of the Federation, that they were setting up 00 as the prequel to the entire Gundam franchise, like you know a prequel to the original Gundam… only with plot holes in terms of the mecha technology. If I’m not mistaken, it lines up chronologically to be a possible franchise prequel, and being a prequel would further explain the choice of 00 as the series’ subtitle–a series to take place long ago at the very earliest beginnings, when gundam was zero.

Further support of my theory comes from the fact that the plot of the first season was all about getting the world to change from its previous warlike affairs where earth fought itself. Along with several other indications (Gundam technology itself being a possible exception)

If this theory is correct, then they can’t screw up too much in terms of train-wrecking the end, since they’ll have to create Zeon somehow. The question then however becomes WHO creates Zeon? Celestial Being? Or the new Evil-ish group in the background? The non-Zeon side will most likely face complete death by the end, since if this theory is accurate, they can’t afford to end divided into 3 sides.

Of course this whole theory rests on the idea that Sunrise was actually thinking for a change, which I don’t think they’ve done since Tomino left.

  24. THOSE. UNIFORMS. LOOK. HORRIBLE.

The only uniforms that look more horrible are the Rounds uniforms from Code Geass. GIVE ME BACK THE OLD GUNDAM PILOT SUITS!!!

And they brought Lockon back, ne? YAY! I mean… WTF!?

  25. Marina is too ‘ho-hum’ to fit Seiei though, but it sees through. I’ll try tsundering Setsuna, Marina-san. Maybe that’ll stop his ‘I am Gundam’ blah-blahs

  26. If this theory is correct, then they can’t screw up too much in terms of train-wrecking the end, since they’ll have to create Zeon somehow. The question then however becomes WHO creates Zeon?

Not necessary, since we know the Republic of Zeon was founded in UC 0058.

This idea still makes no sense, since it would mean that a massive regression occured in every single area of technology except space colony development, and Zeon’s MS-01 was supposed to be the first Mobile Suit ever. Unfortunately I suspect that they’re going the prequel anyway, continuity be damned.

  27. @Kouryuu: Before you get too invested in your theory, shall we review some Universal Century (original Mobile Suit Gundam) facts?

    1) The Principality of Zeon first declares war on the Earth Federation in a bid for independence, January 3rd, UC 0079.

    2) The Principality of Zeon, having developed the first mobile suits, the Zaku I and its successor, the Zaku II, and utilizing the element of surprise, devastate the Earth Federation forces, including use of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons on space colonies and even hurling a entire colony into earth.

    3) The Earth Federation responds with nukes of the their own, but their forces have been so thoroughly crushed they agree to meet with Zeon delegates to surrender.

    4) Right before the surrender, an escaped POW relays info of Zeon’s own hardships, “Zeon is exhausted” in terms of remaining military firepower and natural resource reserves. This news emboldens the Federation to fight on, though Federation and Zeon officials do agree on terms of war in a document called the Antarctic Treaty.

    5) The Antarctic Treaty includes provisions against NBC weapons (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical) along with guidlines for POWs and neutral colonies.

    6) Left with only a conventional arsenal of fighters and ground-based weapons to combat Zeon’s vastly superior mobile suit forces, the Federation begins it’s own project to build mobile suits.

    7) The prototype built from this secret project is the RX-78 Gundam, the first mobile suit produced by the Federation forces. Along with the Guntank, Guncannon, and Mobile Suit carrier White Base, their escape from and fight against Zeon forces was the focus of the first Mobile Suit Gundam series.

As you see, there were no Gundams before THE Gundam, no mobile suits before the Zakus, and there were no silly groups like Celestial Beings and such, just Zeon and Federation. Unless Sunrise invokes a massive RETCONing of their most explored and beloved Gundam universe, I think it’s safe to assume Gundam 00 is just another alternate universe (which is the premise I think most people watch the show with). All this stuff is on Wikipedia if you want to see for yourself.

  28. My point being that the Federation didn’t even start developing their own mobile suits until after the Antarctic Treaty (or shortly before then).

If Gundam 00 does turn into a UC Gundam prequel, so many continuity issues, technological rewinds, and logic break would have to occur, Sunrise would stop being the haha-they’re-so-silly kind of stupid to reaching Institutionally Insane levels of idiocy.

  29. Like they care, in case you did not notice they are in this to sell toys.

  30. >> Sunrise should take a break from these global conflicts and destructive war machines and do a heartwarming, lighthearted slice of life comedy featuring 10-12 year old moeblob girls and boys doing very cute things.

Ever hear of Seraphim Call? It’s one of my favourites, and just guess who animated it back in ’99…
