spring already?

Deen has three shows?! Two shows with Marvel ties?! What the fuck is happening to my anime? Rounding out the remainders… two franchises based on boobs and dead Chinese warlords… two long running baseball franchises… K-On!… and a Key project not done by Kyoto. Maybe I’m just getting old and cranky, but I get less and less excited with each approaching season… unless we get a fanatic waving a gun and his Johnny at the White House.

  1. Senko no Night Raid might get interesting due to the pre-WW2 setting, if they font whitewash the Japanese actions in the war. Maid-sama is in the vein of Ouran, but with no reverse trap and a Haru-style situation regarding secret maid activity.

  2. Not all that much that interests me (yet).

Interesting that unlike last year’s extremely hush-hush return of Haruhi (to the point stations were being told not to say there were airing it and mass denial/oddly worded messages from KyoAni) K-On comes right one out and says “Hey! We are doing a second season in April! The networks got us up on th list already! Want to see it? We got new tunes and more Mio!”

  3. Jason, you’re not alone in your dismay and crankiness. Each passing season I find myself less and less interested in anime. This past week, I’ve found myself catching up on shows I passed over from previous seasons thanks to the bare cupboards of the current and previous season. Shows I usually would not give a passing glance but I had a week to kill and what the hey right? Well I really found myself straining to finish most of them as I have this silly rule of sitting through a show once I start, no matter how horrible and torturous (though I did end up mildly enjoying a few). Maybe it’s just our tastes evolves and changes as we age? Well, I like to think that instead of facing the fact I’m not connecting with the current anime trends.

I think I’ve been following your blog on and off since around 2003. I think I came upon it from a link or referral from Random Curiosity (which I don’t remember when I started following, I just know I still do follow on and off to this day). Can’t believe it’s been that long, it’s rather scary. I mean I vaguely remember going through your archives back in the day (when I first stumbled upon your blog) and you mentioning something about FFXIII and buyout or something (I just looked it up, Microsoft buy out featuring Bill Gates for FFXIII). OH LOOK, it’s finally reaching NA shores tomorrow.

Anyway, sort of went off on a tangent. Really just wanted to say, while having an awoken from slumber middle of the night snack, YEAH I AGREE~! WTF@MARVEL ANIMU! IKKITOUSEN NEEDS TO DIE IN A FIRE (even though I like boobs and pantsu). NOOOOO @ CONTINUOUS GENDER-BENDING OF MY PRECIOUS CHINESE WARLORDS! I’m sort of partial to Major though. And a hurrah for a bit more K-On~! OMGZ KEY AND NO KYOTO = ARMAGEDDON. Well to be honest and fair, I don’t know much about Angel Beats! whatsoever. I’m also partial to Gundam Unicorn. It fills me with nostalgia, well that and the return of 80’s awesome puffy hair.

    Back to bed I go.

  4. I’m confused at K-On 2. They plan to squeeze the series dry, I get that, but there’s not that much to play with, is there? There’s the final year when everyone graduates, but unless they’re planning a very stretched out year (the first season had two years, after all)…
As for DEEN, I’ve been following Hetalia for a while, and I guess that explains the horrible animation in that show. Or how they repeat the same one numerous times. The source isn’t that great either, but still..
Three shows look interesting on the left. Far left.

  5. For a second a thought the pic for “Ring ni Kakero” was a second season for Kamen no Maid Guy. The guy in the black hair looks like Kogarashi doing that pose if you glance at it real quick. ;_; (Hopes smashed)

  6. Eh, well, maybe there’ll be a few surprises. All I need is one decent show to get by. I admit to being a little off with the winter season (though unfortunately, one of those errors was thinking there would be more shows than there actually were).

  7. I’m pumped for Oofuri; one of those series that I would never have started watching without Jason’s recommendation.

  8. Maybe Kyoto will pull a 2009 Haruhi on K-On! and repeat the same episode over and over again for half the season, if they do decide to go with that, I’m hoping for some Mio training

  9. Well what do you know, another uninspiring season.

The cover art for Angel Beats looks nice so I may give that a look, and if it’s no good I’ll just watch the KyoAni remake in three years time.

  10. Arakawa Under the Bridge is tailor made for Shaft.
    .
Don’t try to pretend you aren’t excited for the meido, even if it is a low-cal shoujo manga imitation meido.
    .

unless we get a fanatic waving a gun and his Johnny at the White House.

Hell, I’d settle for a fanatic waving a gun and his Johnny at House.

  11. The first season of K-On was basically the first two Manga. The second will likely be the third and fourth manga (the fourth isn’t finished last I checked, but I haven’t checked in a few months). And yes, the manga has stretched out their third year at school a bit more, probably because they can shift between what the four mains are doing and what Azusa and Ui are doing, or having some somewhat longer trips (summer or school) or mini-arcs (usually around a festival/concert like the first season). Plus there is a rumor that they might continue into university/Azusa’s third year.

  12. As long as there is K-ON!! I’m happy (I take the pessimistic view and am happy if one show turns out to be worth watching)

  13. hopefully something will surprise me because it looks like another crap season.

  14. With the exception of K-On!, the regular TV line-up doesn’t look all that interesting to me, but since I enjoyed G.A. I’ll be looking forward to the OVA for that. Also wonder how that Haiyoru! Nyaru-Ani thing will turn out, even though I know next to nothing about it, except that it involves moe cosmic horrors.

  15. You guys are crazy. I’ve been consistently watching current anime since Spring of 2007 and there has yet to be a bad season. I don’t know what you people are watching, but it’s obviously the wrong stuff. There’s 8 good shows I’m watching this season (3 of which I would call fantastic (FMA, Kimi ni Todoke, Durarara)).

There is always at least a few shows that surprise and turn out better than expected. No one saw Bakemonogatari coming, and look at how amazing that show ended up.

  16. I’ll just keep watching Durararara!!
I’m only waiting for one thing in spring: the first movie of Broken Blade you have to check this out.

  17. Maybe…six on that list I’d watch? (and 4 of them are sequels)

  18. House of five leaves has story telling and action potential.
Rainbow has “oops I dropped the soap” and shanking with spoons (or just spooning) potential.
Senko no Raid Night has potential to rewrite history in a “totally made up BS” kind of way, with gunfights.
Yojo-han shinwa Taikei has potential for really strange artwork.

Most of these potentials will most likely never be realized.

  19. Ookiku Furikabutte 2!

  20. I wouldn’t necessarily call Oofuri a “long running” franchise. It took us years to get to season 2, whereas Major’s on season 6.

  21. Setting aside my habits of watching everything and anything (to completion, even) that’s fansubbed, if you really limit yourself to 3-5 shows, I think it’d be hard to find a truly terrible season. I just hope they turn the “moe” knob further down.
    .
Of course, since I DO watch everything… god, this is going to suck.

  22. ANGELLLLLLLLLLLL BEATSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!

  23. So is it just me or does the guy in the Heroman promo image look like Torino 2006-era Shaun White? Why is Shaun White starring in a mecha anime written by Stan Lee? The world has turned upside down!

  24. brs

  25. There’s 8 good shows I’m watching this season (3 of which I would call fantastic (FMA, Kimi ni Todoke, Durarara))

And two of them, aren’t from this season. (Durarara, if my poster is correct.)

  26. Correction, I should say DRRR is the ONLY one from this season.

  27. The guy in the black hair looks like Kogarashi doing that pose if you glance at it real quick

So is it just me or does the guy in the Heroman promo image look like Torino 2006-era Shaun White?

While we’re at it, don’t the two on the cover of Uragiri wa boku no namae look like Lulu and Suzaku drawn in a more realistic style?

  28. House of Five Leaves, Arakawa Under the Bridge, and Yutori-chan are the ones you all should pay attention to. Trust me.

  29. Durarara 10 just screwed my brain I don’t know what to think anymore just shoot me.
And chickennoodlesoup yeah I think our tastes changes overs years my brother was an anime fan like me but know he just keep telling me all series airing know are with “12 years old assassins everywhere shit”.I tell him to watch baccano or other animes I love but he lost hope already and he’s just lumping everything together as moe blobs and all.

  30. I’m only waiting for one thing in spring: the first movie of Broken Blade you have to check this out.

Seconded +1000. Broken Blade is awesome, though I’ve come to know it by its other name, Break Blade.

If you don’t know of Break Blade’s awesomeness, start reading!

If Production I.G. can animate mecha action sequences like they did IGPX, then I’m totally stoked for Break Blade.

Other than that, yes, it’s Spring already and goddamn DST making me lose an hour of sleep. At least I can look forward to Kiss-x-Sis and Kaichou-wa-Maid-sama. Even though KWMS manga was slow to pick up it’s getting there. KissXSis, however, was intriguing since day one.
    Can’t wait for the anime.

  32. sry about double-post / epic blockquote fail. only first two lines should be quoted.

  33. Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei. Madhouse. Masaki Yuuasa. Bricks will be shat.

  34. Oh, and since no one’s mentioned it until now…
    Black Rock Shooter.
Too bad it’s only an OVA.
