(Wait, is that a cutout of meido Mio from the “boost Mio confidence” chapter? We can’t skip that one too! What’s better than Mio being forced to work in Mugi’s meido cafe to boost her confidence? Lesbian stalkers? Nakkid apron? Mmm…)

This is your life, Mio-chan.

(Sorry, I can’t rank this slideshow above the one in Mad Men 13 “The Wheel”… but it’s not far behind. I just tried to find a blog that wrote about Mad Men the same way I would write about K-On!!… and it doesn’t exist. Sorry. We live in world where an anime about five high school musicians get more words in blogs than Mad Men. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. Eat it, Don Draper.)

So quick recap… one day, Kakifly created this manga featuring four high school girls in a light music club. One of the characters was made into a stupefying moe bassist. Everyone loved her, including the student council president/lesbian stalker. One day, an anime studio decided to turn this manga into an anime. It was bitchin’ awesome… so they decided to make another season. But they skipped the lesbian stalker chapter. Bloggers worldwide went bat-shit fanboy crazy.

Today we’re here to celebrate Sokabe’s arc. Even if it’s watered down and a bit less impactful than the manga, it did add a whole new dimension with the Mio Fanclub Tea Party. Which is a much better Tea Party than the political movement going on in the US.

(Actually, guys, I think they had this planned all along. If Kyoto really did read this blog, you’d think that we’d have more Mio fanservice by now. Or any Mio fanservice. Andohbytheway, remember how I complained about how one chapter was stretched into a full episode? At least here, it was only stretched to half an episode. Much better.)

image

So cute~~

(Moeblob Mio… we’re onto something here! Science! Work your magic!)

image

You know that you have problems in life when you’re moe-ing about an anime character eating noodle-filled bread. Like that’ll stop me!

image

Mugi has earned an invite to the Detective Girls if they ever make a sequel to Daughter of Twenty Faces. LIke Mugi wouldn’t fit in that show.

(You know that you have problems in life when you’re moe-ing about an anime character with a produce sticker stuck in her hair. Like that’ll stop me!)

image

That’s definitely Sawa-chan’s “I’ve had her, and it was totally worth it” smile. Though I enjoyed her comment about how if she were Mio’s stalker, she’d be doing jail time by now. I’ll put “How Sawa-chan Got Jailtime” just barely behind “Nia’s and Simon’s Seven Days” but ahead of “Jessica Simpson in Sexual Dynamite” in “Theoretical Videos I Most Want To Watch.”

image

Wow, flashback to Angel Beats where Naoi should have shoo’ed Yurippe out of the room and hypnotized his beloved… you just know Sokabe wanted Nodoka out of that room, and that green tea is drugged. Mio never took a drink out of it. We’ll never know, but it’s definitely overflowing with drugs.

image

Come on, look at the body language from Sokabe… that’s definitely a “Once Nodoka leaves and you take a sip of that green tea… JACKPOT!” face. I’ve never been so scared/delighted for Mio.

image

This episode excels in overmatched o_O;; faces for Mio.

image

Another great part of the episode… I loved how someone asked her what part of her body she washed first. Everyone was great about it… from how terrified Mio was (the BP executives seemed less terrified in front of Congress), how ruthless Yui and Ritsu were (Jon Stewart was nicely to Kramer), and…

image

… how awesome was Azu-nyan’s reaction (which looked like every Orlando Magic fan after the Celtics went up 2-0 on them).

(I wonder what body part does Mio wash first… damn, can we get Vegas to put down odds for this? I’d go with her legs at -140.)

image

Speaking of mortifying… great scene… loved the Azu-nyan involvement… needed more “Here comes the bride” playing when Mio enters the room… Mugi-chan delivered the cake as you would expect Mugi-chan to deliver the cake… but this scene… desperately needed Azu-nyan smashing a slice of cake into Mio’s face.

(And a garter belt toss. Wait, am I thinking out loud again? Banzai!)

image

Genius fund-raising idea for the light music club. I could so go for a Mio-chan backscratcher.

(The local NPR station has their pledge drive going on right now, and I would so be in on the twelve dollar a month level if I got a Mio-chan backscratcher as a membership gift. If you follow This American Life, you’d probably heard the Bridges episode that featured sex offenders who lived under a bridge. I’m convinced that this is the inspiration for Araragi Arakawa Under the Bridge. I’m disappointed Ira Glass never mentioned that anime.)

image

image Mio vocals.

(Thanks to everyone who pitched in on the “I want to learn guitar” post… probably should have mentioned one slight complication. I’m a lefty. I didn’t realize this until I tried to rent a guitar… and was told there were none for people like me. I can sympathize with Mio’s left-handed musician plight now.)

image

I was trying to figure out what’s wrong with this image… and… my gosh! Yui’s not wearing her trademark tights! Are we sure that’s not Ui up there?

(Maybe it is because of Angel Beats that I was fully expecting Sawa-chan to flip a switch and activate a multitude of high powered fans as Mio dazzled the crowd.)

image

A seriously sparkling Mugi is fine too.

image

A tsundere lesbian stalker is fine too.

image

A hopelessly sobbing Mio is finest.

image

Kinda surprised that there weren’t more guests… free food, good music, and Mio? I fully expected a sold out Staples Center.

image

Why don’t I have one? You’d think that American Express would have come up with a Mio Edition by now.

image

Yes… it is strange. So after Mio finds out that the creepy student council president has been stalking her, the correct course of action was to throw her a private concert?

KK: The only way to fit in a lesbian stalker arc now is as a flashback, where Ritsu goes “hey, remember her?” and Mio has a painful flashback to the events of last summer…

Oh damn, so close. Who would have thunk that Nodoka would be ground zero for the flashback? But I would much rather that they just go through the chapters in order.

image

Highly enjoyed Mio biting her tongue, but they really needed that special Sawa-chan fashion touch. I’m disappointed that we haven’t had a Sawa-chan outfit yet, and we’re seven episodes in. This is a greater disaster than the BP oil spill.

image
image

Sokabe is now more mature because she wears more accessories and make-up? Wha? Though I’m glad “getting over an irrational crush on Mio” isn’t a prerequisite for being more mature. Whew!

  1. Even if you gave me odds, guessing that Nodoka would’ve started the flashback was as likely as LeBron James signing with Toronto – possible, but only in the sense that it makes more sense than, say, Indiana or something.

At least Ritsu narrated it, yeah?

The next episode preview seems like they’re doing the planning for the future stuff next. I have no idea how this series is going to make it to 26 episodes.

  2. I remember when receptionist at my dentist’s office kept telling me being left-handed was a mental disorder and I would never successfully meld into society because of it. My elder brother decided to rub this in all throughout high school. I tried guitar awhile back and every teacher seemingly shunned me.

I play clarinet now and watch anime.

  3. thunderbridgeblues, your life seems so sad. As a right handed person who fits well into society i enjoy a full good life of video games, sports and anime. >.>

I’m just glad we got the Mio’s Lesbian Stalker arc during the month of Mio.

  4. Continuing your guitar playing endeavor, despite being lefty there are plenty of affordable options (sub $200 ownership range) out there for you. And for what it’s worth, the main guitarist in my band is someone who’s a lefty but he plays righty. Quite competently, might I add. It’s not always cut and dry with guitar playing, FWIW.

  5. What are the odds for the Azu-nyan designed flyers/invites being a CD insert for the upcoming tea party single? I want one; it completely feels like something Azu-nyan would come up with and is practically a love letter to Mio, right?

  6. I’m a lefty who plays guitar lefty, but I don’t think I would have had any problems if I had chosen to go righty when I started learning. If you have experience with other instruments, especially piano, it shouldn’t matter too much, since you’re used to precise finger movements with both hands, more or less.

  7. “an anime about five high school musicians ”
Saying K-On is about musicians is like saying Clannad is about a drama club. It’s technically right, but incredibly inaccurate.

  8. Epiphone Les Paul Special II, left handed version. That’s my guitar.
Get one, play it, then rub your mad guitar skillz into the face of all
those oppressive, tyrannical right-handed snobs who have tormented
you for most of your life.

  9. I remember people talking about Sokabe before in the manga or just them talking about Mio having a lesbian stalker. Not really a big thing though. Well the episode finally comes out covering that part….. and Sokabe already has three pics up on gelbooru. Its only a matter of time before…. those pics show up. ^^;

  10. Joy.
Oh for something strange, I’m right handed, but I can’t feel confortable playing a guitar unless I do it left handed because my right hand can work the neck better than my left hand while picking with my left hand is easy. Probably from watching the Beatles too often, since Paul is left handed and mirroring them in my youth.

  11. MIO!!

Am a lefty, but play right-handed guitar. It’s really a matter of what you learn to do first. Prolly could learn playing left handed guitar but can’t be bothered, since using your right hand is fine too….
Unless you really suck at everything with your right hand, just get a right handed guitar and go for it!

Come to think of it, I use my right hand fo the moue as well,….Cool I’m ambidextrous!

  12. You know that you can get credit cards with whatever picture you want on the face, right?

C’mon, the Mio MasterCard…you know you want it!

  13. As soon as I saw the student council president walk in I immediately thought of this blog. Then I see MIO MIO MIO…in the rss. hahaha
Many left-handed people actually do learn to play on a right-handed guitar. Maybe you should try that out. People say that if you naturally hold a guitar a certain way, you should learn it that way. So if your instincts tell you to hold it left-handed (strumming with left, fretting with right) then pick out a left-guitar, and vice versa. Of course, it’s pretty open the way you approach guitar. It all depends on how you start learning it. Hope that helps.

  14. >Why don’t I have one? You’d think that American Express would have come up with a Mio Edition by now.

Don’t some credit card companies let you create your own background image? Imagine the looks of envy among your otaku friends as you whip that out after lunch. “Mio and I will get the check!” Almost makes up for what the waiter will think about you.

  15. What Ubu Roi and yomikoma said.

jason: If Kyoto really did read this blog, you’d think that we’d have more Mio fanservice by now. Or any Mio fanservice.

I still maintain that the fanservice is there, if one has the necessary eyes to see. “The question is not whether it is a real breast or not. What matters is that whether you believe it.” (jaaasooon, are you watching The Tatami Galaxy? You should be.)

  16. so, where do i sign up?

  17. Was I the only one surprised when the fans didn’t immediately rush the stage after Mio’s poem? It was a Mio version of “Pour Some Sugar On Me.”
    .
And I loved Mugi’s “Kawaii!” after the underclassmen brought food and tea to the classroom. So many great things in this episode; so worthy of the Month of Mio. And part of a legit musical performance, too!!

  18. This is probably their best K-On!! episode to date.

  19. MugiVision is go.
Plenty of sparkles and such this time around.
Oddly I thought mini-Mio sounded like Kate from Sketchbook Full Colors.

  20. Wow, you’re a lefty? If you decide to pick up the bass instead of the guitar you’ll have earned yourself some moe points my friend.

  21. Reaction of fans after listening to Mio’s poem
“Wait, I like her because of THIS?”
    Or
“Is that what that song meant?”
    Or
    “WTF?”

  22. Meanwhile during the course of the episode Ui was making herself a 0001 Hirasawa Yui Fanclub membership card – but she’s not allowing anyone else in.

  23. NNNNNNNNNNGGGGGggggg that last image……

I think Pedobear just high-fived me.
