fanime day 1

If anyone wants to meet me, I will be at the San Carlos street entrance at 7pm on Saturday. I’ll update via Twitter. I will have Dr. Pepper.

My impressions of the con so far: Disorganized. There’s a pocket schedule that has no descriptions of events (and missing a few key ones like Black and White ball and Masquerade), and there’s a full guide that has descriptions of some events but zero times. You have to flip between them to figure out both descriptions and times. Oh, the full guide isn’t even fully alphabetized but rather grouped by individuals doing it. And the registration? Come on. When will they ever learn? More staff on registration, less staff babysitting doors.

There’s also no “hot” shows (like when the place was flooded with Haruhi or Gurren Lagann or Madoka) as majority of cosplayers seem to be into video games: old favorites Zelda and Final Fantasy are joined with League of Legends. I think it’s almost a 50/50 split. I did see one guy walking around wearing the $80 Apollon shirt.

The dealers were all quite similar. Figma, Nendroid, and petite Madoka toys are everywhere. As well as those “necomimi” mind-controlled cat ears (who were out in full force and being pimped by Crunchyroll).

Also seems to have very little industry support as only VIZ (who are based in SF) and Aniplex are here.

But day one is generally tame as people get registered and settled in. I expect today to be crazier. And, yes, I will be enjoying the meido cafe.

  1. Yeah, a lot of small cons are like that. The glory days seem to be done.

Enjoy your Meido-created drink spill. ;)

  2. I’ve heard great things about FanimeCon. I am not there, but my friends are. Say hi to the Gilgamesh if you see him!

  3. Biggest problem is that it’s probably too close to animexpo. Im sure many companies would rather save the cash for the beginning of July.

  4. I appears there was a surprise screening of Space Battleship Yamato 2199 at Fanime. I was busy at Kublacon.
