fun with chinese generals!

One of the appeals (fanservice? what’s that?) of Hakufu and Friend’s Fanservice Variety Show Ikkitousen is how it mirrors the Romance of the 3 Kingdoms saga in Chinese history. I know some people have been wanting a list like this that actually relates the character’s Chinese and Japanese names. Of course, I learned all of that through playing Dynasty Warriors, where I ripped off some of these descriptions (also with help from Gamefaqs). :)

!! spoiler warning !!

!! chix0r hugging chix0r warning !!

Rei and Asuka

Sonsaku ( Sun Ce )
Dynasty Warriors 3
Style name Bofu. The oldest son of Sun Jian. After his father’s death, Sun Ce went to serve Yang Shu. Later, borrowing 3000 troops in exchange for the Imperial Seal, he went on to raise his own army. In a short while, he had already stabilized the land of Jian Dong, leading to his nickname of the “Little King.” Starting with his old friend Zhou Yu, he went on to gather many talented officers, thereby laying the foundation for the Wu Kingdom. Assassinated in his twenties.
Ikkitousen
Fairly accurate representation as Hakufu’s dad was killed early on, and she is destined to die soon. However, I think the real Sun Ce is spinning in his grave knowing that his name is being used by a ditzy, uber-naive girl who cannot keep her clothes on. The show also portrays Hakufu as having some dark side, which is surprising since Sun Ce is one of the clean cut guys in DW3.

Shuyu Koukin ( Zhou Yu )
Dynasty Warriors 3
Zhou Yu, “Pretty Boy,” was the strategist and personal friend of Sun Ce. He made his first appearance when he aided Sun Ce in taking the lands of Wu. He is best known for his plan during the attack on Chibi (Redwall), where he had Huang Gai feign defection, then had Cao Cao’s navy set to flame. Zhou Yu has often commented on his looks and was married to one of the Qiao sisters, Xiao. Zhou Yu died in 211 at the age of thirty-seven, when an arrow wound he had received reopened.
Ikkitousen
Can you say “wuss”? He does not live up to his namesake one bit in the anime, and he’s only good for the incest comedy relief.

Ryomo ( Lu Meng )
Dynasty Warriors 3
Style name Ziming. Already an accomplished warrior, he devoted himself to learning and became a paradigm of wisdom and valor after being admonished by Sun Quan. He was greatly admired by his senor, Lu Su as a great servant of the Wu Kingdom. Together with Lu Xun, they retook the Jing Province, capturing the great Guan Yu in the process.
Ikkitousen
Eye-patch girl has a much larger role than her namesake, and Lu Meng does not have the same submission-type moves that Ryomo possesses nor does he flash his underwear while wearing meido outfits.

Kannei (Gan Ning)
ROT3K
Wu’s one of the best general. Former pirate. Serves Liu Bao, but later serves SunQuan. Highlight of his achievement is his night raid with 500 men in Cao Cao’s base of hundreds of thounsands men. Dies in battle when LiuBei attacks Wu to take revenge of GuanYu.
Ikkitousen
Crazed maniac… nothing like his ROT3K self. Enjoys trying to kill Hakufu while preserving her clothes– that’s how you know he’s crazy.

Yuan Shu (En Jou)
ROT3K
From illustrious Yuan clan which produced 4 prime ministers in 5 generations. Cousin of Yuan Shao. Self appointed Emperor of Sung. Known for tyranny and greed.
Ikkitousen
Fittingly, he’s not in DW3, and he’s not in Ikki. (Spoilers…. nah, I won’t give this away completely.)

Taishi Ji (Taishi Chi)
Dynasty Warriors 3
With his strong sense of duty and a feeling of obligation to his mother, he saved Kong Rong, the viceroy of Bei Hai, from danger. Later, he serves Liu Yong and fights Sun Ce to a draw. Liu Yong eventually loses to Sun Ce, forcing Taishi Ci to submit to Sun Ce, serving him from there on.
Ikkitousen
Fairly true to the DW3 self except he pretty much kicks Hakufu’s tushie. Too bad he was betrayed in the anime.

Kaku Don (Xiahu Dun)
Dynasty Warriors 3
He is related to Cao Cao. It is said that he lost his eye to an arrow in a battlewith Lu Bu, but since it was given to him at birth, he removed it from the arrow and ate it. Later, he commanded numerous troops and fought in various places, serving as CaoCao’s right-hand man.
Ikkitousen
Not sure which Ikki character is he… I think it’s the girl with glasses that follows Toutaku around and gives him, uh, pleasure…

Toutaku ( Dong Zhuo )
Dynasty Warriors 3
He served as the governor of Xi Liang, but at the call of He Jin, decided to come to the capital Luo Yang. Taking advantage of the chaos, he moved to the Imperial Palace, with he pretext of caring for the child Emperor in order to take over the government for himself. Adopting the mighty Lu Bu, he seized the throne from the capital to the city of Chang An. His reign of tyranny came to an end by the hand of Lu Bu, his own adopted son.
Ikkitousen
He’s fat, slow, ugly, and very weak in the game. One of the worst characters, and he’s a complete skinny, slow, ugly, babe-magnet in Ikki. I don’t get it. He is either pure evil or pure rightousness depending on your path through DW3… but he’s the bad guy in Ikki.

Ryofu ( Lu Bu )
Dynasty Warriors 3
The mighty Lu Bu. Skilled in all the martial arts, especially archery and horse riding. It was often said, “Among men, Lu Bu… Among horses, Red Hare…” Red Hare, who could run 1000 miles in a single day, and Lu Bu, who burnished his fabled Lunar Spear. Loyal only to himself, he cut down his own stepfather, Ding Yuan, and joined Dong Zhuo, only to later betray him as well.
Ikkitousen
Ok, I think Ryofu’s lesbian partner is Diao Chan, since she’s Lu Bu’s chix0r in history. Of course, Diao was the reason why he joins/betrays Dong Zhuo. In DW3, he’s ungodly powerful– Thunder God Cid for the PS2. Incredible power, incredible range– absolute pwnage. Only Cao Cao in the game could even come close to his killing power, and that’s only because Cao Cao has an uber-cheap instant death weapon. In Ikki, she’s an ungodly fanservice provider– like, well, I can’t think of any. She wears the skimpiest school outfits, sleeps around with both male and female characters, and even sexually assaults eye-patch lady in the process. With the Hakufu/Ryomo/Ryofu tag team, I can’t think of a stronger fanservice show than this one.

Kanu ( Guan Yu )
Dynasty Warriors 3
A Shu officer. Sworn brother of Liu Bei and Zhang Fei, he is leader of the Five Tigers and helped rebuild the foundation of the Shu Kingdom. With his strong sense of duty and bravery, he has been labeled as a “match for 10,000 men.” Guan Yu is also known for his beautiful, long beard.
Ikkitousen
My best guess is that they tried to recreate Guan Yu’s ridiculous in game beard with Kanu’s extremely long hair. Luckily, they replaced ulgy old man with hot chix0r so I’m all for the change. Oddly enough, despite saying so in Ikki, Lu Meng does not kill Guan Yu but just merely subdues him. Sadly, there’s no chix0r on chix0r scene involving Kanu and Ryofu.

  1. Whoa…this brings back memories of “Destiny of the Emperor”.

  2. Do you know of any English resource where I could figger out what those Japanese names are in their original Chinese form? I’m currently reading the Three Kingdoms books right now and am deeply interested (even though it is a pain to read sometimes).

  3. Almost, but not quite. Xiahou Dun is Kakouton, the freakboy who’s all about basics and repairing the craters in the ground after fights. :) As for Ryofu’s snugglebuddy Chinkyuu, that’s actually Chen Gong, one of Lu Bu’s more trusted lieutenants who chose to be killed rather than surrender after Lu Bu’s defeat.

Ikkitousen’s great. Sun Ce with titties.
