melancholy of haruhi suzumiya 7 discussion

The return of Mushishi threatened to derail this blog entry… but never fear! Ms Haruhi Suzumiya is firmly on my mind tonight. Mmm… maybe Haruhi is really a mushi! Ooo… I see! Anyway, to episode 7’s discussion…

Anyways. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m here because of the excruciatingly humorous content that the dear webmaster has to write about contemporary anime. *innocent look* – bento-cube

Just for that, some Cowering Mikuru-run!

I was really hopiong for a Mikuru beam in this one since it was fighting ep…guess we’ll have to wait. – Crusader

I was hoping for Mikuru beam to save them as well. She’s just so useless in battle right now, and I’m still wondering why she was sent back instead of someone more… uh… l33t. At least Itsuki and Yuki have some special abilities. My guess is that Mikuru is either Haruhi and Kyon’s love child or Mikuru is Kyon’s lover, like how Reese was sent back to get Sarah Conner pregnant.

U gotta love the Lambda driver reference too XD – Claude

Yuki used a lambda driver while Itsuki was shouting out Full Metal Panic bylines. Mikuru needs a FMP-inspired gimmick… mmm… how about having the SOS Brigade going over to her house to discover stacks and stacks of… squirrel magazines.

You keep crossing Haruhi and Higurashi in your blogs, yet you didn’t mention the white and red, with scary voice presented preview title of next episode? – Blarg

Actually, I did… “And I saw a machete in the next episode preview… I’m beyond confused but hoping for Mikuru’s twin to murder Kyon.” I’m hoping people got the reference there. o_o;; And, of course, we can add twincest to the growing list of requested Mikuru-run Moe Modes.

More Mikuru-run moe overloads. Was very pleased since I didn’t really get any last episode – Kurogane

Were we watching the same episode?!? Terrifed Mikuru-run 4tw!!!!!

I for the life of me can not fathom why people go nuts over maids so much. I look at a meido character and I’m like, “meh” – melange

Thank you melange. I don’t understand the maid fetish either, but it has to do in part with the subserviance factor. Its a loosely disguised power fantasy. – Zzz…

Meido is currently third in the Mikuru-run Fetish Mode poll, and there are a lot of meido cafes and whatnot in Akihabara. There’s really no difference between a meido fetish, a bunny girl fetish, a loli fetish, a yaoi fetish, etc. Everyone has their preference, just like how some people like Diet Pepsi, some people like Jolt, and others prefer Sprite. Whatever floats your boat. We don’t judge here, even if you sell your soul to be a little girl .

(For whatever reason, I’m reminded that there’s people like Sagara who prefers women who boss him around… chapter 44, with bunny girl Chidori… yes… I have a knack for remembering completely useless things.)

Jason, I just notice something. your site web address http://blogsuki.com —>miao is that your last name? – Xellos-_^

Yep.

I can only hope that, next week episode, marks the end of all the story skipping so far. – Daniel E

Signed.

Haha, “電卓男” on the president’s bookshelf, KyoAni wins again! – Saku

I missed it! Thanks for pointing it out. :)

First animation gaffe? What would you call that haruhi-copter in the opening sequence for eps2-3 then? :/ – kapcy

You’re going to have to give me a timestamp. I just watched episode 3’s OP side-by-side with episode 5’s, and I don’t see anything different.

(One of the original Athlon64’s 4tw.)

im sure kyon and haruhi will eventually end up being a joke-like yuji and shana the romance is probably not going to go very deep – 74

One thing about the show is that pretty much everything predicted in Mikuru-run 00 is coming true:

Hints are made in this episode that Yuki can mind-control people, linking back once again to Ep00. – Skane

In that episode, Kyon also remarks that he doesn’t know where the movie is headed… sci-fi? Comedy? School life? Harem? Yet… that’s precisely the dilmena of Melancholy of Haruzhi Suzumiya… I’m still at a loss for a genre. There’s definitely sci-fi intrigue (and it’ll be more interesting once Kyon get attacked at… oh, wait… I should stop there), there’s definitely comedy, there’s definitely school life elements, but there’s no obvious harem elements… beyond, of course, Kyon’s current harem of Mikuru and Itsuki with Yuki waiting on the wings and Haruhi… well… being Haruhi.

I hope that it doesn’t become a Kare Kano-sort of show or even the latter parts of Genshiken, where the club focus more on the relationships than buying doujinshis. I kinda almost prefer a more Chidori and Sagara-type of relationship, since that way Kyon gets abused, and we get to see more of Haruhi’s cute site. And Mikuru could lurk as the Tess-wild card.

more yuki airtime! XD somehow mikuru’s getting old, with the same service over and over…- EternalHikari

I like Mikuru service! I demand more of it! We need a cowering Mikuru in a meido outfit involved in some sort of futuristic selfcest. If that happened, I’d stop watching anime… not because there’s nothing left to see, but because I’d die from the massive nosebleed that I’d get.

Watching this show is getting more is getting more and more excrutiating. I really don’t understand what all of you Haruhi fans see in her. Coming from a real and ongoing experience, a monomanical and socipathic…woman…kicking you aound day in and day out (poor, poor Kyon) is anything but comedic. Don’t get me wrong the rest of the show is a complete gem but I wince in pain everytime Haruhi shows up to do her spiel. Its just too much. – Zzz

I watch Family Guy, and I think it’s just hilarious how everyone treats Meg so poorly. Sure, I would hate to be the black sheep of a family, but watching someone else on a fictional TV show? That’s comedy. Do I feel guilty about it? Of course not. It’s a cartoon. Similar for Galactica… okay, the human race is almost completely wiped out… am I supposed to feel bad? Hell no, I’m cheering for the Cylons to finish the job. Or Blind Date? Yeah, being on a horrible date sucks, but if it’s someone else with Roger Lodge narrating, I think I can enjoy someone else’s misery for a bit. Even watching Jerry Springer or Maury Povich… yes, those are real, really fucked-up people, but instead of sympathy, the shows encourage us to laugh at them. That’s the entertainment value.

For Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, a lot of the show’s appeal is Haruhi’s in-your-face nature. She’s pretty much that anti-Belldandy (and Belldandy has a lot of haters, but that’s yet another story), and she’s definitely a new mold… people like new things. Has their been a starring character who has just complete and utter disdain and contempt for her fellow classmates? That’s the whole draw of the show, as explained in the opening montage of episode 2 where Haruhi proclaims, “I’m only interested in espers, aliens, and time travelers since you guys are too boring and potato-like.”

In other words, it’s TV. It’s supposed to entertain. If it doesn’t, watch something else… life’s too short as is. :) There’s only 6,351,348 other new series this season (plus the continuation of Mushishi)… may I suggest Planet of the Beast King?

Its always been the antihero or outright villain for me. – Zzz

I think Haruhi is an anti-hero. Not in the Shinji sense… but Haruhi creates more problems than she solves, and she definitely demands fealty to her system. She tries to be heroic, but she most definitely does not take a path of heroism to accomplish her goals… as you pointed out, she uses some very uncouth methods to achive her goals. In fact, I think she could become the next CEO of Starbucks and have an 1/8th clone of her follow her around.

A civil exchange? How is this possible? It’s the first time Kyon has so much as smiled at Haruhi since their first conversation. Haruhi isn’t the tsundere here: Kyon is. – Vinland

I think you’re onto something except I’m not sure if moe fetish modes like tsudere apply to males if one is a traditional male. I need a vote on this. As much as I enjoyed Meido K1, it is most definitely not a moe mode for me. Maybe for Itsuki, but not for me.

image

Hey, that’s what they call a dysfunctional relationship. It seems to me if Kyon really hated the way Harushi is treating him, he wouldn’t have stuck around. For some unfathomable reason or another, the characters are all drawn to Harushi in spite of themselves. Maybe in a way, she acts out Kyon’s fantasy of being able to do all these crazy things and getting away with them. I think deep down, Kyon really craves for some wacky adventure involving time travlers, aspers and aliens. Personally, what makes Harushi attractive to me is her complete disregard for rules and social norms. She’s a free spirit, so to speak. Guess she acts out my fantasy too. – coconut

Signed.

I just don’t remember seeing a character like Haruhi out there in anime or even typical TV. She’s pretty much the opposite of what anyone would expect of a “normal” Japanese girl, and she’s just a ticking time bomb. You have no clue what she’s going to do next, but you can’t take your eyes off in fear of missing something completely insane and unforgettable. It’s like the OJ chase… okay, they’re going like 25 mph… yet… I couldn’t take my eyes off the TV, even to use the bathroom. That’s the power of a haruhigasm.

  1. Go back and rewatch it again then. Pay attention to the walking/legs close-up…

  2. Instead of giving Mikuru a FMP-inspired gimmick, i’d like to see her give off some sort of “Uguu~~” or “Gao” as a nod for either Kanon or Air. I’d melt away if that were to ever happen. :D

  3. First of all, very nice artwork. Wish I know how to make something like that myself.

In that Yuki-repels-bug scene, I’m more reminded of Rei and AT-field in Evangelion than of lambda driver in FMP probably because of the Yuki’s resemblance to Rei.

Before episode 3, I like Haruhi’s character a lot for being willing to dream and daring to step across any boundary, unlike Kyon who is your typical highschool boy who already has submitted himself to a life of a common and unknown person in society. So, I sort of looked up to Haruhi as someone willing to be a visionary and be different.

However, since then I’ve lost respect for Haruhi, not because of her bossiness but because of her apparent lack of understanding of what and who is around her. She is totally unaware of any of the closed-space stuff she causes nor the very alien, esper, time-traveller she sought so much for, even though all these things stand in front of her very eyes every single day. Even though begin the president of the very club she created to seek secrets, she knows the least of all the members. To me, she is now like a blind person whose day-in day-out activities extend not beyond bitching at Kyon.

  4. Strangely enough I get a growing feeling that my morbid fascination with Haruhi is that she is sort of like Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili (aka Stalin). Now before the NSA labels me a commie or people from the former Soviet sphere lynch me, allow me to clarify.

Haruhi aside from her inadvertant God-class powers runs a proletarian dictatorship. She’s not rich is probabaly in the same socioeconmic class as the rest of her SOS-dan yet she is the one calling all the shots. She does not bother with elections, even if she did she’d be the one counting the votes anyway…Like Stalin Haruhi spreads propaganda under a most appealing guise (bunny girl). Like Stalin, Haruhi has feelings of respect for one person that idiot who is the object of her affection, Kyon though it isn’t that much. She also instituted a “purge” banishing Kyon and promoting Itsuki.

Hauhi also has a cult of personality (admit it your part of it too!) and creates new offices willy nilly, sort of like People’s Commisar. Haurhi is also wonderfully rutheless in getting what she wants and is all for sharing, Mikuru at least. She also has a secret police in the form of Itsuki and his consipirators, in fact they are so secret Haruhi is not even aware of them. In her own little club she is universally feared by those who can actaully feel. Haruhi undertook wars of aggession conquering the litrary club and absobing them (Eastern Europe), the computer club was defeated and had to surrender after fighting against overwheliming odds (Finland).

She also has her own collectivization program, she collects stuff and stores them in the club room. She also consrcipts people into the baseball team (Red Army). Like Stalin she has memorable quotes attributted to her. Finally she is master of propaganda as shown in her aquirement of Mikuru.

Unlike Stalin she is a real tsunderekko, much better looking, not a workaholic, and a whole lot less paranoid though I wish she kept the hair gimmick.

What the? It’s spelled out very clearly that they do not tell Haruhi anything about it because her knowing that she is God, would cause problems. Would you tell someone as unbalanced as Haruhi that the balance of the world is in her fingertips?

And how could she know about the closed space? Kyon doesn’t know until Yuki and Itsuki told him and he has more information on these things as opposed to Haruhi who has no clue. She doesn’t see anything out of the ordinary around her because the SOS-dan makes sure she doesn’t see them.

  6. Also, it makes for good dramatic irony. The person who no longer believes in the supernatural, Kyon, is now entangled in a whole web of them. On the other hand, the person who is desperately seeking them, Haruhi, is blissfully unaware of them.

Kyon pointed this out subtlely to Haruhi in Ep05 when he mentioned the book titled, “The Bluebird of Happiness” Check the book out, if you do not get the reference. :)

    Cheers.

  7. ADD] Oh yeah, forgot to mention this in my previous post.

The animation gaffe that is being mentioned is about Haruhi’s walking legs during the beginning of the OP in Ep02-03. It looked as though it was spinning round and round.

    KyoAni corrected it by Ep04.

  8. > The animation gaffe that is being mentioned is about…

    Not reproducible on WinXP Pro (SP2), P4 HT 3GHz w/ 1GB RAM.

    Really, where’s the gaffe? :-O

  9. >It’s like the OJ chase… okay, they’re going like 25 mph… yet… I couldn’t take my eyes off the TV, even to use the bathroom.

    Best analogy ever.

  10. Marf!

The speed of your PC does not matter one bit. :P

For the OP of Ep02-03, observe the positions of the legs as she walks. They literally rotate. If it helps, go through that segment frame by frame. It doesn’t get anymore specific than this.

  11. Strange, strange, strange.

Miao is my last name too >_>

I agree with Justanothergirl, Yuki and the bugs scenes reminds more of Rei and the AT field then the lamda driver.

  12. That’s what I said last time… jason can’t seem to find it . :P

  13. Here’s a pic that should clarify the Haruhicopter:
    http://img100.imageshack.us/my.....8152dl.jpg

The animation error is only present in the first 2 or 3 episodes. They corrected it later on.

  14. >> Unlike Stalin she is a real tsunderekko…

    Stalin… Tsundere…
Ok, this is just plain WRONG.

  15. Stalin??? ROFL

I dunno whether someone mentioned this before but I just began watching To Heart 2 not long ago and I keep getting the feeling that Sasamori Karin is the proto-Haruhi or Haruhi is Karin-amplified-to-the-degree-of-1000. I mean amongst Karin’s bag of tricks is: forced recruitment, (sexual) blackmail, UFO/occult nut, ‘alien’ markings on the school field (drawn by Ruuko tho), “must investigate!”…

  16. >> Haruhicopter

Okay, I see. She takes like one less step in the newer OPs. Yes, I spent the last 15 minutes re-watching the OP… while I enjoy staring at Mikuru bouncing, I can’t help but think that my time could have been better spent elsewhere.

    >> Unlike Stalin she is a real tsunderekko

    Worst. Analogy. Ever.

    >> To Heart 2

Comparing anything from TH2 to Haruhi is like trying to compare El Paso to Las Vegas… yes, you can, but they’re in very different leagues.

    >> Miao is my last name too >_>

Awesome. Maybe you’re my long lost cousin. ;P

    >> Also, it makes for good dramatic irony. The person who no longer believes in the supernatural, Kyon, is now entangled in a whole web of them. On the other hand, the person who is desperately seeking them, Haruhi, is blissfully unaware of them.

    I think I’m developing a man-crush on you Skane.

    >> And how could she know about the closed space? Kyon doesn’t know until Yuki and Itsuki told him and he has more information on these things as opposed to Haruhi who has no clue.

    You too zero.

    >> Instead of giving Mikuru a FMP-inspired gimmick, i’d like to see her give off some sort of “Uguu~~” or “Gao” as a nod for either Kanon or Air.

I wonder if they’re going to try to work in any AIR references (I never finished watching AIR… I think I watched something called WIND at the same time and just completely confused me, so even if they did, I’d probably miss them).

  17. >>Worst. Analogy. Ever.

He was jealous of Lenin’s wife to the point he would insult her publically. He even turned himself into a mummy that was very life like to be displayed next to Lenin…

Well that joke kills Trotsky lovers, and I waited the nigh 60 years to say that too. Still to early, I guess.

    Sorry for the trouble.

  18. Hey Jason you did the same thing I did. Wind ~A Breath of Heart~ (WTH does that mean?) has one of the most rushed and incomprehensible endings ever, to me at least. I just can’t seem to grasp what they were trying to say with Hikari. And there hasn’t been any Air references.

  19. “Unlike Stalin she is a real tsunderekko, much better looking, not a workaholic, and a whole lot less paranoid though I wish she kept the hair gimmick.”

We can only hope she’ll die in a pool of her own urine, just like the real Stalin.

  20. >> >> Haruhicopter
    >>
    >> Okay, I see. She takes like one less step in the newer OPs.

You know the number of steps wasn’t the point of what me and the others said about the OP, right? :P

  21. Watch her right leg. It pushes back as she steps forward with her left, then it swings forward on the _left_ side of her body and her legs swap place. Her left becomes her right, her right becomes her left. Apparently this god can shapeshift.

  22. lmao. they shoulda left the haruhicopter. it’d have furthered the god impression. hahaha
